Long rovers in KSP can be tricky, due to their lack of articulation. Today, I tried to fix this, with a real-world-inspired Arctic Land Train - to make it interesting, we'll be trying it out not on our home planet, but on the icy poles of Duna!

Hello
help i am trapped as a youtube comment
Hello !
ok
@bruhify army Great profile
"that seems to have stopped the sliding a bit" he says as the rear 2 carriages drift across the surface.
Tbf it looks a lot more extreme in the video because the footage is sped up

good joke bernie
Nah but then the Kerbals drove it to the north pole trust me
@@MattLowne They just had real good luck and quantum tunneled right before landing.
@@MattLowne Ahh, so that's what the drills were for!
Wouldn't both poles be the antarctic since there are, presumably, no bears on either pole?
The sponsor transitions are getting smoother, Mattβs really getting better at this
First like!
Getting better at selling out! Lmao jk
I hope he doesn't get to LTT level of smoothness
Practice makes perfect.

Matt, I did this last week.
Given that my rover was only two wide and the parts were independent, other than that it was pretty much the same.
Same idea, at least.
Here is what I found.
- Only the front should steer. The trailers should not.
- About friction, the rear wheels on your trailers should have friction, the front ones better not. That will make your trailers self align after a turn.
Our approach was a bit different, as I built my train to cruise a bit faster than yours. It could handle 25 - 30 m/s easy, without flipping or doing anything weird, even on tough terrain in duna.
If I detached the trailers, my cab could go at 70 m/s. But that's suicidal. It handled 45-50 without any problems.
I drove all around Duna's anomalies. It was fun.
This is my first Matt Lowne mission here (or any actually) so thank you, so very much, for always including the beginner.
Imagine being able to build things like this and they actually load and work, god I wish the Devs would optimize Enhanced edition, we have like max 100 parts before its gets to laggy and crashes
The controls on console (which I assume that's what your talking about) are really janky aswell
@@V0ID_Music for me at least they're not, though I've never played KSP with a keyboard so I can't compare them
I know! I cant even launch a small rocket without my XBox becoming a rocket!
depends on your pc
i can run 300 parts ships at 30 fps, which isnt optimal but its ok
btw my cpu cost 100Β£
@@fearfulgrot 30fps is only possible on my PS4 below like 20-30 parts, mach effects always bring it down to like 10-15 with low part builds, 5ish with high part ones (still below 100 parts). Gotta love how the more expensive PS4 can run like a third the parts a similar priced PC can, thanks Sony
If planes fly, cars drive and boats sail, then I guess trains would locomote, or something like that.
Very profund, lord Helmet- i mean, lord Vader.
Come on baby, do the locomotion

Disable the steering on the two aft segments. It' ll be easier to drive
I buillt a (very similar) land train myself and only activated the first line of wheels. It was pretty much controllable.
Thanks to him I now can make a ssto and a shuttle, he is a docter for eyes, works hard and still manages to keep us happy with his bids, very smart to, God bless matt lowne
A small minor linguistic correction, Here in Australia (unlike you stated in the video) we don't have "Land Trains". There are simply "Trains" (i.e. trains that use rails) and "Road Trains" (Which are trucks with multiple trailers).
The most common configuration seen on the Roads (at least on the East Coast) for interstate haulage is the B-Double followed by the the AB Double, the image you showed in this video was a B-Triple Road Train. In basic terms the trailer type known as "A" is shorter and has a 5th Wheel over the rear axles of the trailer and is usually to form an "AB Double", while a B Trailer is longer and has no 5th wheel.
Literally no one:
Matt: planes fly, boats sail, cars drive, so what do trains do?
Matt is thinking 20 steps ahead of the human race
LOL Matt, you have a natural voice and style for advertising, even the in-video ad was entertaining.... and a roof-top bar on a Duna train.... pure Lowne Aerospace!
I've been waiting all week for this

as soon as he said hello everyone and welcome back i started smiling gosh i missed this channel, thanks for making my day matt
Just as an info, I build a land train in KSP with 6 waggons but similar concept. I needed to use some tricks so that the kraken does not attack:
1. only the wheels of the first "waggon" are steerable
2. I used active horizontal motors (!) and added them to the yaw control action group (max angles have been reduced to 30Β°)
3. the number of wheels that are motorized decreases for waggons further back
4. the power of horizontal motors decreases for waggons further back (damping can have also an impact)
5. breaking power increases for waggons further back
6. the rotation direction of the very last wheels is inverted
I'm from straya and I love when youtubers say our name! its just so nice. Love ya videos Matt.
Why do I hear Tom Hanks yelling left and right over the polar express music?
The Halley VI antarctic base is similar to the land train idea, with the whole base being moveable on skis!

It's fun to hear you talk about what each part of the crafts you build is for (describing living, science, engineering quarters, e.c.t) It's really fun to imagine actually living/working inside the craft and it makes it feel so much more alive. Instead of just "Kerbals live here" You say "And this is where Jeb will come after a long day of flying, and mostly crashing, rockets, where he can relax with a warm cup of cocoa, and watch the stars" It's a small thing I know but I felt like pointing out how much better it makes your stuff.
Matt is a genius. So glad to see you keep making great content and getting sponsors.
I just made a cup of coffee and thought to myself it would be great if you had put something new up to enjoy! Thanks for the great videos!
Last time I was this early, I had to make the Sponsor Block segments on the video ^^
Wow. got to say Matt is an entertainment system that I cant turn off!
That was an awesome shout out to the Alaska land trains. There are a few segments of one on the roadside up here. They are unbelievably large.
I liked this build so much that I watched the whole sponsor message without skipping. Great to see Moar Biggerer builds!
Btw watching the sponsor afaik doesnβt do anything for Matt, I might be wrong but thatβs what ik
Matt's building time lapses give me the same vibes as cooking videos.
Cooking Rockets with Matt!
Most trains drive sure, but matts train knows only one method, drifting truly an ascended being
Polar Express: i am a joke to you?
Trains have a conductor. That means trains conduct
Wouldn't that mean the trains get conducted?
@@dextruax4903 cars drive, cars also get driven
Plains get pilots,so the *PILOT*
Great vid Matt. Really killing it lately with the content. For a while it seemed like there was a rut but the newest update has given you some cool ideas. And this vid was brilliant.
Side note, Ghost VPN is legit af my dude. Thank you!
This is actually a really good idea for a mobile surfaces base! And you can expand it with docking ports too!
I notice the wheels on all wagons kinda do their own weird thing instead of steering like a train. I built a train and I turned all wheels on all wagons except for the first wagon, also turned of steering. The last set of wheels was set to constantly break or go in reverse. You'll lose a lot of power but it does help with keeping that train pointed into the right direction. :)
Very nice, but I'd add one more hinge for twist (roll axis), just so it looks a bit more realistic.
Matt's over here making a new movie
"Kerbian Drift"
This reminds me of the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, look it up if you want, but it's basically a massive vehicle made by the USA to go to the south pole and back, unfortunately, it was complete garbage for multiple reasons. The cruiser went missing, possibly buried under a mile of snow, possibly at the bottom of the ocean. It's pretty cool.
The hinged vector engines is absolutely genius, I audibly gasped π
Video idea: a vessel with one of every single part.
Edit: have a use for all of them.
Good idea
Im gonna do it and see how it goes
Impressed
It's not that hard actually. If you do it from small -> big the whole way down, you can get away with using each adapter and/or decoupler only once.
@@Th3BlackLotus try doing it yourself, you'll understand how difficult it is
You should try turning off steering on the wheels on the rear cabs, my guess is they are over correcting for the natural slide
always love the smooth sponser transition
This video is great Matt!!! You deserve 10 million subscribers!!!
That sponsor transition was smoother than the cha-cha slide.
Amazing commentary in the VAB this time!!!!
It just hit me what Matt's transfer window catchphrase reminds me of and I don't know why, it's every time on Inside the Factory when they explain proofing breads and other doughs. I've heard it a million times but it's always interesting. EDIT: God, I miss the Smithsonian channel.
Hey Matt, you should do a video show casing a mission with a replica of the Jupiter III rocket, a concept super-heavy lift vehicle based on shuttle technology, and looks like the most kerbal rocket ever designed.
Took a break from KSP For awhile and now I have a year and a half of matt lowne
You can lower the sensitivity of your node changes in the bottom left. Makes it a lot easier to get the maneuver you want.
Gosh, you should try to do this on every planet and moon where you have multiple bases as a sort of bus! That would be so cool!
I never knew I needed to see train launched rocket but now...I. NEED. IT.
Wow this looks amazing
Bet you could fix the sliding by disabling or flipping steering on some of the wheels.
It looked like all the wheels on the back car were trying to turn, but because they were all behind the center of mass they all angled the same way.
Built something like this is Space Engineers, more of a pain to get working.
In order for the rear to not push ahead, you gotta decrease their power or dsiable their power in general.
AH YES BIG BASE THAT CAN MOVE... I love this
You should limit the yaw hinges somewhat to improve handling. Also, if feasible, you should provide some rotational flexibility.
Thanks for the video! I've always liked to think that trains locomote.
the way you show ads is really incredible!
if you ever do this again, I suggest Jacobs bogies for more rigidity between the carriages, it works really well
this is the kind if stuff i subbed for
Just want to say I actually appreciate how often you remind viewers of the ideal transfer window for Duna.
This isn't my first Matt Lowne video, but go ahead and ask me how to get to Duna (I will severely underestimate the delta-v)
Duna looks like art!
This is good train-ing for a Duna mission!

Ah, yes. A table for the hwiskey that they would definitely bring along.
That's what's actually in the storage units. The Kerbals only told Matt that they were "repair kits".
Matt you should do an RO/RSS/RP-1 series. I'd be interested to see the cool things youd come up with. I'm on my second try and got my first sat in 1953.
Some times your designs have me in awe.
Good segue to the sponsor!
I think you should add a new module to this as a mobile VAB and a completely separate module for storing the parts, sure the launch pad can have some stuff too,but the main storage should be its own module.
I know it will ruin my future reputation but...
Like so matt lowne can see
What a smooth transition there.
Ayyyy you got a sponsor! Congrats!
Ok Matt Lowne should make sponsor Segways for most of the internet, it is so smooth.
Another trick to make the thing more controllable is to disable steering on the last two cars of the train and all but the first few rows on the front. Otherwise it tries to go sideways instead of turning.

you can make the same type of train to make a blunder-blunderbird mission, saving stranded kerbals and get stranded too
