Bald-faced Hornet | FUN FACTS - 6!
Bald-faced hornets, (Dolichovespula maculata), are a species of wasp and not a true hornet. They are more closely related to yellow jackets than they are to hornets.
This fascinating creature also has an omnivorous diet. The Bald-Faced Hornet actually serves a beneficial purpose. It consumes large numbers of flies, caterpillars, and spiders.
The insect also possesses a unique defense mechanism, in addition to its painful sting. It also has the ability to squirt venom from its stinger into the eyes of small predators invading the nest.
The colonies of this rather impressive invertebrate also sometimes contain as many as 700 workers. This counts as the largest number of workers of any species within its genus.
This amazing eusocial (an advanced level of social organization, in which a single female produces the offspring and nonreproductive individuals cooperate in caring for the young) insect actually constitutes a specific species of the yellowjacket. Furthermore, it remains well known for its construction of large conical nests, built from paper-like materials. It
typically builds its nest in trees, or under the roofs of buildings.
The nest is constructed of paper-like material made from chewed wood fibers mixed with saliva. Nests are built every year. Queens are the only members of the colony able to survive the winter. In April or May, each queen selects a suitable location, constructs a small nest and begins raising sterile daughter offspring. These workers take over the duties of enlarging and maintaining the nest, foraging for food and caring for the offspring while the queen functions only to produce more eggs.
The queen bee lays all of the eggs in a colony. The queen fertilizes each egg as it is being laid using stored sperm. She will occasionally not fertilize an egg. These non-fertilized eggs, having only half as many genes as the queen or the workers, develop into male drones.
Most queens in the genus Dolichovespula mate only once. Males die after mating.
It is also known as the white-tailed hornet, bald-faced yellow jacket, black jacket, and bull wasp,
Bald-faced hornets can even remember faces! They have been known to fly past some people in order to sting an individual who had tried to destroy their nest.

Fortunately, most of these hornets were quite drunk while I was filming them. There were a few that were a little aggressive, but the majority just wanted to eat more of the fermented apples. I hope you enjoyed learning about these unique insects. Thank you for taking the time to watch. I appreciate you and your support.

Amazing close-ups! I’m not sure we have these in our area! Funny that they were drunk on the apples! 😆 Super clear video, you could really see their heads and how they move! Great filming and facts! Still, I think I’ll keep my distance! 😄🌻🌻🌻
Thank you Jennifer. I used my phone to capture those close-ups. Also - I think most of these were males and they don't have stingers, so I felt pretty safe! Thank you for your support.
Wonderful video

Thank you Pavel. They are very interesting and most times I would not try and capture them because they are super aggressive. Thank you for your support.
Fantastic footage 👍👍
Many thanks Stephen! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for watching. Hope you had a great summer and wishing you a colorful Autumn.
Very neat footage of these animals that would send some people running. They are very neat insects that have their role in the ecosystem as well.
Thank you Donna. I've found that with most animals if I stay calm and don't make any sudden movements, they react in the same manner. Thank you for watching.
@@BWoodPhotography Agreed! Having a calm demeanor is a good thing. Hope you are enjoying autumn as well!
