Wasp vs. Spider

- I was sitting at my desk having a coffee, when I heard a buzzing coming from my window. I go over to see a wasp fighting a spider who had made residence in my window. The spider had been very helpful at keeping insects outside (it was about my air-conditioner, which small flies + mosquitoes seem to love). I figured I would film it because it was super interesting to me.

That looks like the black and yellow mud dauber (Sceliphron caementarium) a type of Spider hunting wasp that paralyzes its victims to be used as food for their offspring. They can keep about 25 paralyzed spiders in each of their nest cells for each egg, which look like mounds of mud hanging from ceilings. They are quite docile and rarely stings unless handled roughly by a human.
100% Sceliphron 😁
Sounds like a scene out of Alien.
Yep I got a nest right outside one of my windows that’s gotten pretty decently sized. Fascinating watching them carry spiders in, but a little unnerving to think those spiders are paralyzed and either starve to death or get eaten alive. Nature’s brutal.
Breaking the webbing and pulling out the spider? That wasp is strong as fuck
This isn't a tarantula hawk. They have red wings and a blue abdomen. There are hundreds of wasp species that hunt spiders (the entire family Pompilidae for example, called "spider wasps" because all those species hunt spiders).

Technically, wasps are not legally required to show spiders their warrants before stunning them and carrying them off.
Wasps can act without a warrant but only in their own district, this wasp is clearly a rebel and must face disciplinary action immediately after this unlawful seizure. She'll be on nest duty until internal affairs has finished investigating this matter.

Its like some one put a knife into your body i guess
For all you, the spider will basically feel the equivalent of a machete stabbing into your body, but at a split second, the spider is paralyzed and then dies with wasp larvae.
@Brett Houle
What makes you think insects and arachnids have no nervous systems? Of course they do. They couldn't function otherwise. They can sense temperature fluctuations, they have hairs all over them that can detect the faintest of air currents and they can feel the vibrations of the tramp of tiny insect feet. It's absurd, given all that, to assume they can't feel pain. Incidentally, eyes require the presence of a nervous system in order for a creature to see with them; most spiders have six or eight of them depending on species: clear evidence of a brain.
@Brett Houle
Another interesting little bonus fact:
There is evidence that even without a nervous system as we understand it, even plants can feel pain. It seems strange, but it makes a kind of sense. Pain is a survival mechanism; that's how our bodies tell us that something is wrong.
“Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night, I can feel my eight legs...and my arms...even my thorax. The body I’ve lost, the cobwebs I’ve lost. Won’t stop hurting.”

That is a black and yellow mud dauber. They are actually pretty chill and rarely sting humans. You could actually probably pick one up without it singing you. Thanks for the info!
This species made nests in our house multiple times. We obviously didn't want a wasp nest in our kitchen, so I took the nest down and there were many dead spiders inside the nest and bee larvae (I guess) crawling around in there.
After that incident, a wasp (same wasp?) wanted to build another nest inside the house but we didn't bother that nest. There was traffic going in and out of the house. The wasp brought the dead spiders it hunted inside the house to build its nest. It would fly right past our heads all the time and we got used to it.
After a while though, we never saw the wasp. I never checked the nest. Did the young bees fly out? Or are they in a pupae state or something? I don't know.

That's a mud dauber wasp. Considered non-aggressive towards humans. (like bees)
They capture and paralyze spiders to take back to their young
Good things to have around to keep spiders in check.
bees can socialize with you once they know your scent...
maybe even fly over to where you're working, land and just say hi
When the wasp stings the spider, do the venom travel through the spiders body? If so, wouldn't the wasp be eating it's own poison? Please explain
At first i sided With the spider hoping it could pull off a miracle but then I realized how much time and energy the wasp was using for its meal/host for eggs and decided all is fair in love and war
I hate wasp and hornets . One almost killed my wife from a sting. I kill everyone I see.
They have the worst stings!
It's a mud dauber wasp. It's gathering spiders, but not for themselves. They hunt spiders to paralyze, stuff them into their tube shaped mud nests (usually made around window frames or building eaves), lay eggs on them, then seal them up. The baby mud daubers then use them as a food source when they hatch out.
For such a fearsome wasp, it sure does have cute swirly antennas
@yooem 26 lmao I laughed at your comment omfg
Yes but they have to use mustache wax on the antenna every day or they straighten out.
What planet is that?
Is that a parallel world I'm seeing?
That wasp is huge af...
Oh, dude..... It's not even the largest of them all.
StarWonderer117 it’s actually very small. It’s just the camera zoomed in. The silhouette of it makes it black, thus making it bigger and scarier.
I'll just say it. Wasps and scorpions never EVER lose these battles. These animals are perfectly evolved for winning battles against other critters. Unless you are a much larger animal like a mammal or a bird, you cannot beat these masters of battle. That wasp has long, thin appendages, and no bulbous fleshy area like the spider's abdomen. Animals that are completely composed of armor and piercing weapons like the wasp and the scorpion cannot be defeated by those with soft bodies, no matter their venom or other defensive mechanisms.
Tarantula
Spider: Finally my Dinner is here!
Wasp: *Uno Reverse Card*
🤣🤣 facts
😭😭😭🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Spider: it’s my Uber eats delivery. Wasp: i’m dining in tonight.
Mr.spider fought like the true warrior
Rest in Pieces.
Guys, this is your typical predator-and-prey situation, why you get all pissy about a mud dauber killing a spider, when that's what it, and several other wasp species, are evolved for? And besides that, from what I saw on the 'tube, tarantula hawk vs. tarantula battles can look pretty badass.
Josh Mason This is actually a wasp in the family sphecidae. It has a very distinct abdomen and wings. Mud daubers are in the family vespidae.
True but most of those tarantula hawk wasp vs tarantula fights are one-sided for the wasp
operation zerox What species is it? It looks so much like a black and yellow mud dauber.
The spider in that video got just as fucked up as this spided.
