- "If Only for One Night" is a song written by Brenda Russell.
Patricia Louise Holte-Edwards, better known under the stage name Patti LaBelle, is a renowned Grammy Award-winning American singer, author, and actress who has spent over 50 years in the music industry. LaBelle spent 16 years as lead singer of Patti LaBelle and the Bluebelles, who changed their name to Labelle in the early 1970s and released the iconic disco song "Lady Marmalade".
LaBelle started her solo career shortly after the group disbanded in 1977 and crossed over to pop music with "On My Own", "If You Asked Me To", "Stir It Up", and "New Attitude". She has also recorded R&B ballads such as "You Are My Friend", "If Only You Knew", and "Love, Need and Want You".
LaBelle possesses the vocal range of a soprano. Due to her musical legacy and influence, she has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Apollo Hall of Fame, and the Songwriters' Hall of Fame. The World Music Awards presented her with the prestigious Legend Award. LaBelle has sold over 50 million records worldwide.
Luther Ronzoni Vandross (April 20, 1951 -- July 1, 2005) was an American singer-songwriter and record producer. Throughout his career, Vandross was an in demand background vocalist for several different artists including Chaka Khan, Bette Midler, Diana Ross, David Bowie], Barbra Streisand, and Donna Summer. He later became the lead singer of the group Change which released its certified gold debut album, The Glow of Love, in 1980 on Warner Bros. Records. After Vandross left the group, he was signed to Epic Records as a solo artist and released his debut solo album, Never Too Much in 1981.
His hit songs include, "Never Too Much", "Here and Now", "Any Love", "Power of Love/Love Power", "I Can Make It Better" and "For You to Love". Many of his songs were covers of original music by other artists such as "If This World Were Mine" (duet with Cheryl Lynn), "Since I Lost My Baby", "Superstar" and "Always and Forever". Duets such as "The Closer I Get to You" with Beyoncé, "Endless Love" with Mariah Carey and "The Best Things in Life Are Free" with Janet Jackson were all hits in his career.
During his career, Vandross sold over 25 million records worldwide and received eight Grammy Awards including Best Male R&B Vocal Performance four different times. He won four Grammy Awards in 2004 including the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for a song recorded not long before his death, "Dance with My Father". The song was co-written with Vandross' friend and protégé, Richard Marx.
Every time they did this song, it was MAGIC. Luther frigging Vandross is, and always will be, the only one that could go toe-to-toe with Patti LaBelle.
Luther cold out sing Patti any day of the week but he could NOT out scream her. I hear lots of screaming on this recording and Luther singing as good as he ever had.
Basically. Luther and Patti were equals.
@@954Linda that part
N he didn’t even have to raise his voice
Gerald Levert could go toe-to-toe with her as well
The sad part is that we will never have live performances like this on tv anymore....
Go on now TELL IT!
Donnis Bagby the good old days. Well at least we were blessed to have lived it.
Well the reason why is because this was before American Idol. Vocalization took on a serious turn when rap, hip hop started to dominate. Now we have TV shows such as American Idol.
Never say never! There will be a generation that will bring this back.
Even if we did they wouldn’t be this good
2023 I am now 60 years old and one of the things I thank God for was that I was able to see this man who I consider the Goat in person at a concert in Radio Music City Hall in NYC. May he RIP 🙏
Who else gets whole body goosebumps with this song????
ME ME!! PICK ME!!
🙋🏾♀️
Yes still!!!
Me...
Me!
I swear, the friendship they shared only made their performances that much more special
No one can do no-no-no-no-no like Luther. He was one of a kind and will never be replaced. He has been gone 11 years and I still listen to him every single day. RIP Luther. You will forever be missed.
Johnny Gill tried it by blowing, Luthor is the teacher, the original, the Roger Federer of soul, sweatless victory, and beautiful symphony. When Patti goes as high as a kite, he gently brings her back down. Complimentary
❤😂😊
The HARMONY! I love how much they enjoyed each other's talent!
The best male and best female singers of all time on 1 stage! Jesus take the wheel!🤣
New school doesn’t have vibes like this! Still listening in 2020! RIP LUTHER ✊🏽🥺❤️🙌🏽
Luther and Patti tore that song up.

Whew! The oil was overflowing. I felt this in my spirit. The way Patti came in on that intro sounds angelic. No one hits a first note like Luther though. The way he came in? Ahhh...this performance is just perfect!
This is the magic you get when you put two "Singers" on stage together.
Thank you, MyRhythmNSoulTV for posting this musical gem.
Absolutely amazing. No talent like this now a days.
This is the kind of collab that make you make the stank face. Like Luther and Patti....you didn't have to kill it like THAT! Seriously tho??!?!

Congratulações sings. I loved very
One night …my knees are shaking 2 ! That’s good game people 😮
He was one of her back up singer's. She fired him to force him to become a star.
No, actually he said that he used to be the president of Patti LaBelle's fan club, and he was Roberta Flack's backup singer before he went solo.
Patti didn't fire him but Robert Flack did.
Tori Temple Wow
He was a backup singer to David Bowie, too
WOW!! That's deep! Talk about forcing someone out of their comfort zone!
Fanning out for my sweet Luther💗💗💗
Will always love me some Luther Vandross 🎶💖
Patti and Luther are two opposte styles that complement each other perfectly. Even her antics enrich the performance of this song. Beautiful duet.
Pattl's hair looks nice! As for the rest...I have NO FRIGGING WORDS!!!!
OMG! I remember watching this. Yes!!!
Omg is all I can say the harmonies Jesus ❤️
the era when singer is all about song and great vocal quality, not controversial dance and unnecessary gimmicks.

HAPPY 68TH BIRTHDAY SONGWRITER BRENDA GORDON "RUSSELL" (APRIL 8, 2017)
Glad to make the 1000th like. This performance is legendary. Thank You.
I LOVE how Patti allowed him to shine vocally... she could have overpowered him with her evil wicked vocal cords. LOL
It’s called being Professional.
Plus, we really do not know what Else LUTHER had. Might have been saving it for Just The Right Occassion.
Gone too soon.🥺🙏🏽♥️🕊️
@@joiisler8986 well shes been known to overpower people shes live duet-ed with professionalism or not. LOL
@@MatthiasHamilton
Uh huh. I’m sure You know “All About” Patti.
You don’t even understand this Performance.
Stay in your lane.🕊️
@@joiisler8986 uh no tuna fish stay in your LAKE
Im enough of a fan and have seen her enough live to know that she tends to over-sing people she is performing live with.. just like Aretha did
Go swim upstream
@@MatthiasHamilton
Not surprised you like Tuna, since they Stink to High Heaven, and are Rife with Mercury. Salmon is one of my Favorite Foods, so I will Gladly “swim upstream.”
I said this was Professional, because it was Rehearsed by a LEGEND and a future LEGEND.
Neither needed to go “off-script,” because they Both knew in advance what to bring to the table. (Both sing on a Whole Other Level; and I’m Sure LUTHER would have stepped it up, if he felt that was needed.) It was a planned Concert, not a Contest.
ARETHA comported herself on and offstage like a Lady at All Times; never purposely “blowing” Anyone off the venue. (A QUEEN never feels the need to “over-sing.”) People bow before she even picks up the Mic. If you feel she is “over singing,” it’s only because the Audience can’t stop screaming, and she respects the people in the “cheap seats” just as much as the elite.
Like I said. You don’t even understand this Performance (and probably not ARETHA’S; who also duetted with LUTHER), either.
Take several seats.🪑🪑🪑🪑
i love it
They kilt this song love me some Luther Vandross in Patti labelle.

#TGIF 6-7-2019 here....Thinking about A #Onenight....had 2 come see Pattis knees shake because that would definitely be "ME" 😎 #RIPLUTHER...tell my Mom&Dad I miss them🎶🎶🎶
Thank you.
The sad part about this was not many people saw this on TV. According to the Nielsen ratings, it was the lowest rated show on TV for the week that it aired(Thanksgiving night, 1985).
Just wow nobody asked you about no ratings?! Just sit back and enjoy the show you checking out ratings and s***! shaking head lol
I did enjoy the show. I taped it!
