Tried one being actually in market, and it makes more sense than an M5. If you want a performance daily driver that you will never track, this is just right from a price / feature stand point. It's defo on my shortlist. Love that it can be totally quiet and luxurious as well.Love that it's totally inconspicuous to look at. I'd remove the badge.
With all do respect I think you are missing the point of the M550. BMW wanted to bridge the gap for those people that wanted more performance, and a comfortable daily driver. BMW added the "M" badge to indicate it's more powerful than the prior 550, with a few improved performance enhancements (but not as much power/enhancements as the M5, yet still more than the prior 550). To get the driving experience you are looking for you need the current or new M5 (which the new M550 actually outperforms the current M5). The $96K on your tester is a fully loaded M550 (it actually starts at $74K). The current M5 starts at $103K with no options. With all the bells and whistles like you have on the M550 you are driving, you are looking right at $120K. Thanks for reading and have a GREAT day!!
Exactly. The M5 is an appealing car, but it’s far too gaudy, loud, and full of unnecessary driving features I’ll never make use of. That’s not to diminish the M5’s quality or better suitability for a real track car. However, I want something more refined, quiet, and comfortable: you can keep the M hooligan cars. This one is fantastic and far more affordable than the M5.
Have to disagree. Anyone buying this car is buying it for the M badge and can’t go M5 because of money and not because the M5 isn’t comfortable enough for them. Lol. This is for the buyers that can’t afford the M5. The M5 is incredibly tame as a daily driver - there’s no need for a segment that balances what you claim. It’s all about price point.
@theylive2749 I disagree. I love this car but see zero point in having any more power. It's pointless. An M5 for regular driving is just a waste. I wouldn't want an M5. Realistically this car is probably unnecessarily powerful for me. I don't want to hear a loud obnoxious engine. It might be fun for awhile but it would get tiresome for a daily driver.
It sounds like you completely missed the point of this car. It’s not supposed to be a raw monster that makes your ears bleed. It is an executive express that isn’t supposed to be insane and loud, it’s targeted at executives that want to get places in luxury and at a reasonable pace. What you want is an M5 and judging this car as an M5 when that’s not what is is supposed to be is always going to give a bad result. Do you review the M5 and spend the whole time talking about fuel economy? No because that’s not what the car is for. You need to review in the context of the car.
nah, the M5 itself is an executive express, its exactly what u described the 550 lol. you don't understand the true essence of the m5. it's a comfortable sedan that can keep up with the sports cars. thats been their philosophy since the E28 M5.
Huge V8? It's a 4.4L twin turbo, not huge. Thrust is amazing and in sport mode, nice growl.Fast, rear steer which the M5 does not offer, compelling package, great commuter and fast, brakes are good too. Design, BMW did a nice job, longer wheel base, front end nicely updated, looks great. Given the promotions BMW has been running, a smart buy.
Ofcorse it’s not M5 good it’s BETTER it’s the M550i because this car is built for people who wants a luxury beautiful daily drive car yet can have the M badge fun feel too This has both faces in one this is the face of a luxury family car and the face of your still that guy that wants to have fun on your own with V8 monster You missed the whole point of this car man
Spend $5500+/- on the Dinan Stage 1 package, it apparently uncorks the engine all the way up to M5 levels, upgrades the exhaust just enough not to be annoying - but sound a bit better. I get my M550 this Wednesday after it finishes it’s CPO repairs, that’s what I am planning on putting it through. It will be closer to an M5, but have a much more live able suspension for everyday use. Nice review, though it’s not supposed to be or compete with the M5. It fills a niche.
I completely agree with you regarding the lack of flair. In my opinion, most modern cars lack unique styling due to an overwhelming emphasis on utilitarian features such as safety and fuel economy. Maybe what the industry needs is another Virgil Exner - somebody to create designs for the sake of design. I only see this done in exotics like Bugatti's, but these are out of reach for most people. As always, thank you for the great review.
Great video well done, I did test drive an M550i , I took it on some curves I really like the power and handling I enjoy the car immensely. I may just buy one however I’m waiting for a Corvette C8.
Nice car just ordered a 2019 m550i with all the bells and whistles. The 2020 m550 rumored to have a 530 horse power like the m850. I considered the MB C63s but liked the BMW better
“If you want a V8, you want a performance car. And if you want a performance car, you want an M5...” ummmm, what? Honestly it sounds like the only car you would give a good review of, at this price and with a V8, is an M5. So your review is just kind of BS...
Not a Chance! Stock for stock? The previous generation M5 would destroy the M550i on a roll race - 60 to 160. Even the V10 would destroy it from 60 to 160.
The Wedge yes quicker from 0 to 60 sure. But that’s it. After that it’s game over for the M550i. AWD cars have more drive train loss, which is significant after 60 mph. Meaning if you are making 510 HP at the engine, you are losing about 20% in Powertrain to the wheels due to AWD. RWD cars lose maybe 15%. So power to the wheels is going to be less on a stock M550i, which still has less HP than the previous gen M5 anyway. The old V10 goes over 200 MPH in stock form! So at the top end high speeds no 550is can stay with M5s and M6s..
Hold your horses none of the m series cars these days would beat a v10 bimmer. That car comes stolk 500hp. And if they could've got the dam thing right it would've been in rotation still.
It's an M light with 450hp that roars... how much more do you want? You went out of your way to belabor this point, all while completely missing the point of the car. Its a daily driver, not an M5.
True but I'm still getting one I need the 8 cylinder, I might put new bumper on,make it flare out better,I'm not sure,I here what ur saying ,for the money yeah should be growling and letting u know ur driving an 8,but yeah there saving it for the m5 I believe so they make more lute, that's why I'm going with 2015-2016. Yes used ,also way better price the once I've seen. Good video
This is an entertaining review ! I like that you call the level of NVH refinement "extraordinary " ! I prefer a quieter cabin, and really like this car. I'll find a way to get rid of the synthetic engine noise piped through the speakers.
A stellar review. Wonderful scenery to boot. This V8 could use a tad more “rumble” in its exhaust note., as you pointed out. Gesture control = 🤹♂️ imo
i dont want to sound rude but in they way u critisize this car for not being that agressive like an m5 and u are talking about "not a great driving exp." sorry for being so directly but its absolutely bullshit u are talking i just drove it yesterday in a car rental and fuck its amazing my car which i own still is an f11 535d stage 1+ with 800nm but this m550i with "only" 650nm and 462hp is in nothing compareable to that. Its driving experience is just amazing power in all rpm and smooth in the same way thats what the m550i is made for! Strong athlete in gentlemen suite ;)
Good video. Will test drive the 2021 M550i for the second time before I make up my mind. A bit bland and numb no? Maybe BMW had Chinese market in mind.
It’s a shame that this guy is profiting from doing such uninformed and opinion based reviews. No clue what the purpose of this car is and totally discredits an awesome car.
I want a car with this engine and comfortable seats, without the gimmicky tech. The gesture control is a deal breaker. Awful. I literally don't want that on my car; I'd be embarrassed to have it.
Omg. People are shot. Yeah not going to get the car because it had a stupid gimmicky volume thing. Who gives a fuck. Maybe if you had to use it, and had no other options but that is not the case. I had a 2011 535I literally days after it came out and all this time later the body hasn’t changed much but that’s BMW. They just refine it more and more. Looking into buying one right now and one silly feature would never keep me away from the car. And then to get even more silly “you would be embarrassed). lol. Yeah real embarrassing rocking a 70K plus car with a sick bunch turbo V8.

Amazing car but to be clear different engine. N63TU2 in the 2018 M550 or N63R and the S63 motor in the M5.

How did your tunes go, did you upgrade your m550 to 600hp?
I’m interested to know too? I’ve got the M550i. Thinking to do it too but feedback would be excellent
