    Ok I actually own a 2018 M550, it's my 5th BMW, 2 M3's, X5 50 M Sport, e39 530 M sport. It is a luxury car and a sport sedan all in one. M Cars are awesome performers but can get hard for every day use. The M550 is a cross between a 750 and an M3, soft when on rough roads, fast as hell on smooth roads! I love it!

    I love my m550. It feels as fast as a last-gen m5. It really does throw a lot of weight around but the torque is epic always and it's such a great family car

    Just bought the 550i after driving both 540i, X6. In the end the driving experience between the 540 & 550 was different enough that horsepower won out over fuel economy. Didn’t like the X6 one bit. This is my 2nd BMW (2008 M3 6 speed stick) and currently on my 3rd Porsche (86-994/2006-997/& 2012-991.9-manual) have also 2018 S5 (sons car) and my wife’s car is a 2016 GLE 350. 550i is the best of the bunch and you review also was a reason I purchased it. Thanks.

    FYI.... per Xdrive. While in sport plus, slide shifter to left to put tranny into more aggressive shifting. If track or spirited driving the ESC/DSC has two modes of disengagement. Know your car if giving advice.

    I just leased an M550i and this thing is faster than just about ANYTHING you will encounter on the road. Beats all current M cars and outgoing M cars, with the exception of the new M5... and trust me, it won’t get lost by the M5 as it’s virtually the same car. 30 extra grand buys you racing front seats, two wheel drive mode, tweaked suspension, a few red buttons, rounded exterior exhaust tips, different airddam, different diffuser, Hood moulding, exterior M5 badging, and a slightly faster version of the same engine.

      bimmersavvy Like I said, you didn’t have an M550i. This car easily smokes f10 M5s, any M6, and just about everything encountered on the road. Forget what you heard, this car has M5 power. The xdrive locks up so fast no one can stop you.

    • @rhar1044
      @rhar1044 6 років тому +3

      bimmersavvy Maybe not, but I don’t track and it’s better and faster off the line than the f10. It’s lighter and the G30 has better handling, tech, and luxury.

      Randy you are correct! I don't own a new 550xi I have a dreaded 2011 F10 and I fuckin beat everybody I come across that wants to challenge me. I even walked a coworker's rice burner on the hwy I walked him he couldn't even catch up at 130 he gave up and I'm not sure what make bike but it was a 900cc. And this is my 14th BMW and I will not drive anything else.

    Regarding your question, I'll have to get back to you once the pricing for CT6 4.2 comes out. The M550i would be my second choice.
    As always, excellent work, M!

    I’d consider the 540i unless I really want a V8. Power from the 3 liter turbo is more than enough. Btw thanks for calling out BMW on the CarPlay pricing BS.

    • @VictorEstrada
      @VictorEstrada 4 роки тому +2

      @@jgripen969 not only does it sound good, but it also performs great! Give it a basic tune and you're looking at another 100ish hp and torque, full bolt ons with stock turbos and you're looking at 600hp/tq, which is what the M5 makes!

  • @ivanlowjones

    Kudos to MotoMan for finally calling out BMW (and to a lesser extent, all German luxury brands), for financially sodomizing carbuyers with overpriced options and feature packages that are standard on some entry level econo-boxes.

      One wonders - is charging annualy for CarPlay even OK from Apples side? It's totally ridiculus. You pay for the hardware - that's it. They fired the Volkswagen boss just the other day for greed! BMW might take a look at that too.

    BMW is aggressively selling vehicles these days, just picked up a loaded M550i X drive in Canada with $10K in total discounts, so, yes given the discounts I would definetely get a well equipped M550. Would I get the remote control option, no, not in Canada but in countries where it could be useful, perhaps. That said, absolutely the best car in class and love the rocket like acceleration, comfort level and handling that is what is expected from BMW (also test drove the M5, loved it but exercised constraint for a change, at least the M550i was enough to make me go that route). Great overall balance to the car with impressive power delivery. Reliability expectation is high for the well proven 4.4L V8 that for the last 5 years has been pretty much bullet proof.

    I've been mulling the m550 but I think I will get the Audi RS5 sportback now that it was announced. Though the numbers are similar, the audi is likely more nimble and more practical with the hatchback. BTW, I've hit upto 30 mpg's in my 560 hp Audi RS7 thanks to cylinder deactivation at highway speeds

      Well, it's 4 years later, and I had looked at the RS5 as well. For me, it was a bit too small. I ended up with a '22 M550 just a couple months ago, and am extremely pleased that I did. I'm just back from a 1200 mile road trip where I was probably averaging 80mph, and still got 25+ mpg.

      @RC-bx5jo 5 років тому

      I would say never drive german out of warranty in general. That's a Japanese car thing :) I've had BMWs and Audis and quite frankly that's all the same. Example: RS5 with Audi care: 85K to buy but then 0$ maintenance for years (well, 999$ Audi care so 333$/ year over 3 years), only tires. Buy it used at 50k thinking you got a great deal? Average 5-7k maintenance / year + the trouble that comes with it. Not matter what, the running cost of a car like that is about the same. Either repairs or devaluation, either way it's one of those facts in life: nice cars ain't cheap.

    • @RoughRider757
      @RoughRider757 5 років тому +1

      You always buy German luxury cars with extended warranties up to 5-7 years depending on your ownership plan, and with a service plan. You only want to be liable for the tires.

    The only contender in the price range is the E43 AMG. Audi's don't get a cabin refresh until 2019 (finally!) and the 2018 just feels dated at this point. At that point, the S6 and RS5 Sportsback would be on the list as well.
    I really welcome this new breed of super GT cars with 400-500 HP. Give me a quiet cabin when cruising around and sweet muffler when accelerating. Best of all worlds!

      Official LXRY it's a little weird, but keep in mind the Canadian spec is 10k more than the USA spec... even with the conversion those options that you get standard are not worth it. The USA version is simply more configurable. Dollar for dollar Canada gets nothing extra, in fact they pay more for the same features, they just don't have a choice.

    My expirience is the best 5 series with petrol engine. M5 is like an animal and with every day use it’s annoying and difficult. This M550i is amazing soft spot sleeper car. Many people completing it looks like regular 5 series and that’s huge advantage that is why I get one my self. I have other M cars but when comes to driving everyday I always pick this one. The only serious contender for every day use is M550d.
    Yes I am talking about diesel and before u start compelling it’s diesel u should drive one to understand how good 400HP diesel is.
    In general BMW petrol engines aren’t so exiting I would always pick diesel instead but with V8 is another story.
    It’s rewarding driving experience with luxury and tech. Difficult combination to match on market.

      The CTS-V is class leading in power, steering and handling. Any automotive journalist will tell you so. That being said, it's not a class leading interior. And as Motoman spent time on in this video, the performance sedan market has been moving toward AWD solutions since Mercedes started doing AWD E55 models a while ago (not counting Audi which has been doing this since the beginning of time). With BMW moving to this, I think Cadillac's next V-series sedan will likely go AWD too since the announced CT6 V-sport (a potential competitor for the M550iX) will be AWD.
      And AWD is more than just selling it in cold weather markets, although that's a BIG deal. It's also about acceleration times and better handling and control in everyday driving situations. Let's face it, most of the examples of this car will never see a track day. But it will be a nice executive saloon for those who want the sleeper "warm-rod" and not go whole hog for the M5 (which may be out of budget anyway). It used to be that engines didn't have enough power/torque to overcome the mass of AWD versus RWD. Those days are over with AWD now the main method of shaving off significant 0-60 times. Audi knew this a while back but Tesla raised this to a whole new level.
      With better AWD systems combined with trick diffs and very fast computers watching the action and reacting in real time, you get the best of both worlds with these new systems. The CTS-V (and CTS V-sport) will be the last great RWD performance sedan. The future in this class is AWD, period.

E class AMG? no i'm not a Albanian pimp.

      Ronan, I'm actually really, really torn between the M550i and the new E53 right now. I've driven both back to back twice now and only wish I could Frankenstein them together. To me, the styling on the MB is better inside and out, as are most of the finishes. The inline 6 is silky smooth and sounds great, but the ride is harsher in comfort mode then the M550i is in sport plus. The MB is a little more nimble, as the weight balance is better and the nose is not nearly as heavy. I also love the interior of the MB, especially huge gauge and infotainment screens in the MB. The interior of the BMW just feels stale to me, even though it has been drastically improved over previous iterations. The piano black in the M550i drives me nuts too. The new X5 interior is a step above, imho. However, for all the gripes, power delivery in the BMW is phenomenal, and it put a smile on my face in a way the MB didn't. The head and heart have different opinions, and I just can't seem to rectify them. That's why I'm here, seeking guidance.

      @@tg6415 I picked up an M550i last week for 9% off MSRP + incentives. No regrets. Super quick but still comfortable just getting used to a bigger, heavier car. Ultimately, it was the awful E53 lease rates that helped me make my decision. It's residual was lower and money factor higher than the M550i, so even with 11% off MSRP it was significantly more per month. I'm happy and my wallets happy.

There's a fully loaded M550i ($95k msrp) down here in South FL I'm going to jump on this week based on your feedback about the deal you got and your MB leasing info. @@tg6415 7% should be easy, as that is invoice, but 9-10% is doable. Several dealers said no way, and several said yes. If you're leasing, make sure you get the base MF. The dealers will try to mark it up to claw back some of the discount. Good luck!
