The State Department does "take care" of Americans, but Tim is right in that that kid is not getting out of jail there. But I am sure he is being visited by embassy staffers. The institution is so huge, it has many, many people on the ground in Africa that have nothing to do with geopolitics.
I was gonna say this isn't getting any higher than the State Dept. bureaucrat in charge of African affairs. Between Israel, Yemen, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, China, North Korea, Haiti....yeah any higher and the guy would get thrown out of his boss's office with a threat that he gets transferred to the US embassy in Somalia if you continue to annoy me.
The state department is terrified Congo will go pro Russia because of all their minerals so I don’t think they’re going to push to get him out especially after the blew up their relationship with Rwanda over the getting the hotel Rwanda guy out of jail when they’re the ones they used to overthrow the government last time

This is more an indictment on the American education system than anything else. How could somebody honestly think it wise to talk so silly in another country? Of course it'd be taken seriously! Freedom of Speech is a privilege, not a universal right.
