- When soundproofing a door, choosing between a hollow core door and a solid core door can be confusing. Remember, a solid core door is NOT the same as a solid wood door. There are major differences between what door will work best when soundproofing a room.
In this video ill show you all the intricate differences between these two types of doors and wether you're soundproofing a solid core door or a hollow core door, you'll know the difference and also if it's worth replacing an interior hollow door with a solid door.

I bought a new solid door based on your video. Now I'm waiting for it to be installed. I hope the new door will protect us from the neighbors' noise. Thank you for your video.
Did it?
@soundproofguide the air gap under the door is to provide air pressure relief between rooms for homes with forced air systems. You'll notice they air moving under them at a decent clip when the HVAC fan is running and the door is closed. If a sweep is installed it can create uncomfortable temperature differences between rooms, and poor indoor air quality including elevated CO2 levels.
This is really helpful. We have hollow core doors original to the house- now that our kid is a teenager, the sound of the doors opening and shutting all day is making us nuts- it’s loud closure no matter what we do. Time to upgrade!
Thanks for the tips. I was considering replacing my hollow core door for a solid core, but I will try the weatherstrip and sweep first and see how it goes.
How'd it go? I have a home office that is downstairs next to our main living room and it's super noisy outside the office and it sounds like almost all the sounds are coming through the door. I'm considering replacing with a solid core door AND using the tips in this video.
@@Painfulwhale360 solid core with weatherstrip and a baseplate that seals to the door when closed will keep a lot more sound out. we replaced ours and couldn't be happier.
Thanks for the explanation and especially adding the graphics for the difference. Going to try and pick up a solid core door on craiglist (saw them going for around $60) and redo the weather stripping and get a sealer
how did it work?
The major con for me (which is why I looked this up) is not being able to screw things to the door without an anchoring screw. I recently put a stud finder to an interior door and could not find a single spot I can screw a coat hook on. Now I know why.
Hollow doors are a joke and I find it insulting that they even make them and sell them to the public. it's like WTF.
Thanks for the vid, but what's your take on solid core v solid wood doors? And re solid wood, are hardwood any better than softwood?
I have been doing some research on how I can reduce the echo effect in my room. I'm talking about the reverbs that occurs when sound bounce off a wall and does a ricochet around the room. As a youtuber, I'm sure you know all about it.
Your channel keeps coming up and I can see that you have some great info on this matter. I've a suggestion for a video topic, for you. It will fit nicely with a problem that I have. I've a small 9'x11' room with original hardwood oak flooring. I own the place. I'm using the room as both an office to do podcasting/UA-cam and writing on my PC. There is also a futon couch for a guest to sleep over.
I already got a soundproof curtain coming and it's from your favorite company. I've also purchased a tapestry for the one wall and a fleece throw blanket for the couch. The couch has a firm fabric. Hopefully, the blanket helps. The only issue is the rug.
I do not have the money for wall-to-wall carpet or a large area rug. For something that's supposed to be helpful, I'm surprised at the low amount of information on this. According to my own research, I needed to stay away from rugs that are weave style or low to flat surface. They apparently don't do a good job of absorbing sound. I did get a 45"x29" accent rugs that have cut pile or have a shaggy texture. Is one enough? I won't know for certain until the rest of the stuff comes in.
I would have loved a detailed videos on just rugs and nothing else.
Your trying to sound deaden you can build cheap acoustic panels for the walls which will be the best at absorbing reflections and reduce echo if recommend making your own it’s much cheaper and very easy with UA-cam video tutorials
try using sound proof paint. and yes it does exist and yes it works.
I got my solid door core at a door store in a corridor in Ecuador on the 44th floor overlooking the Shore. 😂 great video my dude!
🤣 Love it!
Atacames? 🤔👀
i weather proofed my doors with insulation and added door sweeps on both sides and it did very to soundproof tbh
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
How did you add insulation?
Can a pile of sand bags throughout the wall will helpful in sound proofing?
You’d have to cover the entire wall, where would you put it? Between the wall?
@@soundproofguide I have a garage having 13\12 feet area with 6"thick bricks walls I want to cover whole wall with sand bags of 8"thickness from the inside ,will this arrangement work?space is not a big issue for me
Hollow core doors defeat the whole purpose for having a door to begin with. What's the point of having a cheap hollow core door with a lock if you can just kick the door in with no problem. A door is not just for privacy but it's also for protection. Hollow core doors a joke even if you are broke.
they are for the interior, for privacy,, not security
I saw them in north american homes and went bonkers. You are absolutely right. If you have a home invasion while you are in the house, a solid core door could be a life saver
It looks like a door, it opens and closes like a door, you can paint it like a door 😂
If it breaks you buy a new door, businesses make more money, you get new door, everyone is happy.
Commonly available interior solid core doors are easily kicked in as well.
People typically have locks on interior doors so they can get dressed etc.
I welded security frames around my doors because I weld a lot..
Don’t think your solid core door offers any protection if you don’t have steel plate jambs properly installed in the framing.
No they aren't
What is the best sound proof door - solid core or solid wood?
Solid. The best is a fiberglass door but they are hard to find.
Hollow is great for the cost but the wooden doors aren't even remotely airtight.
Nice!
Will I suffocate without any gaps around door though?
Can I use a solid core door, and also then apply all the same tactics you would soundproof a hollow core door with for extra soundproofing?
Coming strictly from a sound proofing perspective, you’re not wrong. However, and I say this respectfully, putting out this content without any regard to a wholistic approach to Building Science, is irresponsible. While this is good advice for an exterior door, it is not for interior doors. It may be ok for short periods of time when the door only needs to be closed for 5 to 15 minutes, but this method should not be followed if one expects to have their door closed for a long period of time, like while sleeping, for example. Like other comments have stated, following the steps outlined in the video will hinder the HVAC system from running as it should. For any room to be heated or cooled, the HVAC system needs to have a balance of pushing and pulling air. If air cannot be pulled from a room, the HVAC will pull more from other rooms and the room with the sealed door.
I should add that a vent can be installed to allow airflow and pressure equalization, but that will most likely defeat the purpose of the sound proofing. A more expensive option is to have an additional HVAC air return installed in the room one wants to sound proof. But that incurs much more cost and requires consulting an HVAC engineer to be done correctly. This is the gap is at the bottom of the door. Don’t seal it.
Is it equally easy to install a threshold with a solid core door?
How much is a solid core door?
My local supplier is giving me two options for the door leaf: either a solid-core door (more massive), or a hollow door (lighter) but filled with mineral wool (an acoustic insulation material) on the inside. Both doors have 4.2cm thickness. The seller claims the hollow door with mineral wool will soundproof better than the solid-core, but I dunno... Which should I choose?
he's obviously lying to you
He's not lying to you. A rock wool insulation is superior to even solid wood.
@@TheCookster64 anyone who's ever built a movie theater doesn't use mineral wool as a sound dampener. It is MASS that is the most effective solution. Two layers of 5/8 drywall sandwiches acoustical sealant is an example of one. If mineral wool was as good, why wouldn't movie theaters build using them in their design? They don't. They use concrete blocks or poured concrete walls to keep the sound within the building. Mineral wool only works perfectly when it is exposed to the air and able to absorb sound. When it's enclosed inside a wall or door, it's as effective as normal fiberglass batta in sound absorption
@@RoninCC Well, if I really had the money to do it right I would build a room within a room that would have no contact with the outside room.
I have a problem with humidity in my house. Will switching to solid core door help with that?
No.
I've heard most commercial door sweeps are completely useless to actually stop noise from elsewhere in the house from coming in. Makes me nervous. Place I'm living was planned and built sloppily from the start unfortunately. Not my idea...
Door sweep both sides of the door. It works.
Will solid core door sagged over time due to weight?
No, not with the proper hardware. Make sure to inquire when purchasing.
Not if you add the third hinge required for solid core
Where can one purchase a solid core door?
Door sweeps are not commonly used in my country. Would a proper wooden “step” with weather sealing not be superior for isolation anyway?
Anything that closes any gaps works. Shine a bright light from the other side. If you can see any light through any gaps, it can be improved.
This is simple. Hollow core doors are shit but great if you are poor.
and with a hollow core door it's a guarantee to keep you poor since it's so easy to break down. one swft kick and your in.
Oh.
So, as you said, "a hollow core door is typically a hollow door".. LOL! Good grief.....
You have to keep hole under door atleast 1 Inch for AC
why is it not just called a "solid door?"
Some are called solid doors like solid wood doors. That means it’s a one piece solid slab.
Because only the core is solid in a solid core on a solid wood door the entire thing is wood hope that helps
but if i get a solid wood door instead of a solid core door is that bad?
No it’s essentially the same thing. You’re good to go! 😊
Right the hollow door is so cheap you might as well hang paper towels hung up
Why isnt there a decibel test or showing difference of a solid core door
Im more of a "see it to believe it" person and ive watched ads of the doors being soundproof but they look FAKE
Atleast give an STC lvl
A hollow core is an stc of 20-25 and solid core is 45-50 you may google this to confirm
you look a little bit like morgan grimes from the tv show chuck. the spy
Would you ever make an only fans?
🤣 I wouldn’t make any money there! Lol
@@soundproofguide🤣🤣
I use solid core doors as table tops xD Cheaper then buying a table top that big!
That’s a great idea!!
