USS Salem 4K Drone Experience!

- The last surviving Heavy Cruiser in the world, the Salem is moored in Quincy Shipyard (where she was built) as a museum ship. She may be in need of a fresh coat of paint, but that doesn't take away from her sheer size and formidable weaponry!

She's in good shape materially. Don't let the cosmetics fool you.
USS Salem at 716 feet long was longer than most WW2 battleships. I saw the USS Salem along with USS Newport News, and USS Des Monies at the Philadelphia Navy Yard. My dad who passed in 2017 at age 92 served on the USS Louisville CA 28 from 1943-46 and witnessed 51 sailors buried at sea along with Rear Admiral Theodore Chandler due to 3 kamikaze hits in the Pacific. God bless our service men and women past and present. In 2015 a turret from USS Louisville was found in the Nevada Desert which was damaged from Jan. 5, 1945 kamikaze.
My former neighbor also passed in 2017. He was 94. He served most of the war aboard the battleship USS South Dakota
@@timothycook2917 Thank you for sharing - they are a part of the greatest generation. I have visited the sister ships of the USS South Dakota - USS Alabama and USS Massachusetts - Nice ships and museums. Take care!
In March of 2011 while I was in cub scouts. I took the opportunity to tour this ship. What made this experience even better was that they arranged for many troops to sleep overnight in the crew sleeping quarters. I don't think would ever this level of experience ever again. The only other experience at this level was when my boy scout troop got permission to stay 2 nights on the USS Constitution in June 2016. But that's another story.
She got moved over into the next slip a few years ago. Work 20’ away from her every day. Can hear her gangway creaking and banging as the tides change. Not many visitors and with Covid even less. Still pretty solid and not gutted like the USS Massachusetts despite the peeling paint and rotten decking.
Fish Squish Guy This video was done quite a bit ago compared to my current skill set and of course quality of Drone I want to film her again but would like to do so with permission and or staff knowing ahead of time so I can get different shots but I still think this video holds up as an education piece :-) thank you for the info on her - I live in Plymouth and always loved visiting her. If you enjoy this video please check out my historic ship playlist featuring a few other local celebrity ships as well as ships from across the country :)
I volunteer on Massachusetts, Im not sure what you mean by gutted? Mostly all her equipment is in place besides Engineering parts they took for Iowa class reactivation in the 80's.
I serve on the USS NEW PORT NEWS CA-148 Between late 1967 to 70 The USS NEW PORT NEWS was one of 3 Ships in it class and we where the sister ship of the Salem. I so prod to serve my country on a fine fhep and all the shipmate
this is pure gold
When cruisers start to get this big I wonder if they're not more like mini-battlecruisers.
This video is PERFECT! Im working on a 1/40th scale model of this ship and this video is PRICELESS! Thankyou for posting it! :)
Aaron Morse no problem feel free to check out my other warship videos like the USS New Jersey and Massachusetts
Oh I did! They're awesome too! :) Check out the project if you'd like www.flickr.com/photos/31693825@N07/albums/72157678361193432
Done and done!
That's impressive, Aaron. Well done!
She needs a lot of work but the shup is in al together outstanding condition for her age and lack of funds¬oriety compared to the larger BBs and CVs.
The last heavy cruiser in existence.
I am not sure about that. Technically, Russian 1144 project ships is a heavy cruisers too.
I would argue that it’s the last heavy cruiser that was all guns no missiles etc. :-)
Very true
The last all-gun heavy cruiser
my grandpa was an officer on the salem in korea name was Paul Kellogg
they really should move her to battleship cove or somewhere where more people will visit.
My dad was on this ship
It's sad to see such beauty thing in that condition :(
Its not in bad condition
Its not bad right now.
But if you think this is bad, look at photos of Salem before her re-paint/restoration in 1999/2000.
This is at the old location she has been moved closer to the blue and white tanks
It’s a museum ship and it’s in that condition?? Hell I’ll donate some paint. It’s sad to see these once majestic ships in such a horrible condition. If they can’t afford to take care of her then give her to another port city that can at least give her a decent paint job!!
indeed :(
I better place for her to be is Battleship Cove. Massachusetts herself and two other WWII museum ships reside there. Having Salem there will be huge
we have a group of volunteers working on it, but we are few...
Qapla!
apiece ofdirt secret ship
The Graf Spee!
When the film "Battle of the River Plate" was filmed. Salem as what you said got to play as Graf Spee in this movie. Sure the 2 never fought but one playing the other is nice. It's great we got a ship who stared as the enemy and is now surviving as a museum. I wonder if Salem will appear in more movies maybe a fictional story about her. Who knows but nice to see somebody who was able to recognise the Salem as the german Panzerschiffe who wreak havoc down in South America and was put down by her own captain.
What if uss Salem was used for tintin movie Red Sea shark
👍🏻🏴🇬🇧
lovely ship, shame she's in a state like that, could be worst i suppose
As a volunteer aboard the USS Salem, we once were in worst shape but did receive a major paint job back in 1999. We maintain as best we can with our limited volunteer crew, about 3% of original ship's complement. Ship's company used to run about 1500.
Agree with you, these sort of things should be better preserved. Here in England, all of our Battleships and Heavy Cruisers have been sold by the government for scrap. We give away over 14.4 billion pounds in foreign aid, yet cannot spare the mere thousands it would have taken to moor and preserve them. You're lucky you have a society that values your history over a quick pay-cheque.
was she just abandoned there?
Patrick Bateman
What about HMS Belfast? That's a light cruiser. And I know a couple of WWII Royal Navy Subs and destroyers have survived as well.
I hope
She even played her role well as the Graf Spee in Battle of the River Plate! Please fix her up!
Don't Tread On Me .
it is in bad shape ,,why ,,how can i help heer
Don't know who the museum that is in charge of this ship is but this ship is in desperate need of a field day and some repainting. It gets any worse in that rusted condition the Navy's going to be taking it away from that museum and scrapping it.
Cool as fuck, nice one..
Such a beautiful ship. Let's refurbish it and put it back to sea.
It's a little outdated. Sure it has auto-loading main guns, but guns aren't as advanced as modern weaponry. Plus, ships rarely go toe-to-toe in Naval combat these days. Generally, it's Carrier power and escorting the Carrier.
They'd have to basically rebuild her to change all of that.
Sure, give it nuclear power, delete main guns aft and give hera railgun, keep 4 5 inch turrets, replace forward turret at the bow with vls, keep one 8 in turret up front and replace two 76mm mounts with ciws, add torpedoes , sonar and lazer ciws later for taste and keep the armor belt/ upgrade your electronics and build more of her.
she isn't going out to the Sea
plus its Outdated
they no longer make Heavy Cruisers so i don't think she can go out at sea
@@jamesjohnson-jd4ic take a look at the USS NEW JERSERY IT WILL COST TOO MUCH MONEY TO UPGRADE HER.WITH MISSILES AND CWIS GUNS.AND BESIDE THE THE SHIP IS OBSOLETE.THAT IS WHY ALL OF THE IOWAS CLASS BATTLE SHIPS ARE DECOMMISSIONED.WHAT IT TOOK FOR NEW JERSEY WITH THE NEW STYLE WEAPONS MOUNTED ON HER.IT WOULD HAVE BEEN CHEAPER TO BUILD A NEW WAR SHIP.LET ALONE TO MANED A SHIP LIKE THAT OR THE USS SALEM.
Needs some paint
You'd think the people of Quincy would show some self respect and restore this ship? At least put a coat of paint on the damn thing instead of leaving it to rot like that.
No wonder that place turned into such a pit. No pride.
well step up then, we're all right behind you !
Salem one of Ship's I Write ✍Hobbies Pray 🙏Battleship Texas and U.S.S.SULLIVAN Buffalo 🐃New York Both Museums Sinking
Mein Gott !
Dieses schöne Schiff sieht aber ziemlich verrottet aus .
