Thank you to whoever made this video. I was aboard her back in December of last year and she was beautiful. Hope I do get a chance to go back and see her again.
Wow amazing ship with stunning history! I'd seen her in person but I had no idea what history I was looking at! Just down the river is also the SS United States, a retired American ocean liner. You can see her aft funnel in the background of this video at around the 1:30s area.
Really appreciate the drone views as I am currently building a model of the ship. It's a kit from back in the 1950s and is lacking in a lot of details and has many errors. The drone shots along with other information from other sources are a great help.
:) I try and make every drone experience video regarding museum shifts a viewing experience on their own. What I mean by that is when you watch it especially if you could never visit in person I want to leave the viewer with a feeling that they indeed did visit one of these mini great museum ships in person when they watch one of my videos. As a former Model maker myself I appreciate your kind words as I’ve always hoped that folks that preserve history look at my footage for reference and then some so I appreciate it hope the model turns out great please feel free to update me
@@bsgtrekfan88 Gotta say that the more I see of this ship the more enamored of it I become. The woodwork in the interior is just beautiful. I'm glad this baby is still around. Were I a wealthy individual I'd propose and offer to build a permanent drydock, use it first to do any repairs, then set it up for public display such as was done with the Cutty Sark in England. From a modeling standpoint my only complaint is that there aren't enough available for ships of its era. We are drowning in quality WWII ship models in several scales that are easily available. For example I have a 1:200 USS Arizona by a company called Trumpeter that is BIG, beautifully detailed and reasonably priced by today's standards. But the ships of the Olympia's era such as those that comprised the Great White Fleet are hard to come by.
Can you go on the deck of that ship? I visited her last year, but I could only tour the inside. It might be because it was 27 degrees and windy. I would totally go back there to walk on her deck, as well as go on the Battleship New Jersey.
I was onboard a couple of times in 2001, and you could not go on the main deck. Only the upper deck and bridge. The open bridge is above the upper deck, and has a small enclosed wheelhouse that was open. At one time there was an engine room tour.
@@loboheeler Thank you for your response, Roger. That is really strange, I wonder if it's because she's such an old ship, and maybe it's not very safe up there on the deck. I will have to find out more next time I'm in the area.

Nice video, no fancy speed ups or anything that detracts from the subject itself. Great video of an historic but forgotten ship.
thanks - I strive for basic but well done cinematic stuff. Check out my other ship videos!
You may fire when ready, Mr. Gridley!!!
Thank you, loved the tour, but I need to see this ship in person.

Old Navy Gunnersmate. All my love great lady!
Nice video, had no idea this was there
Just watched all your drone videos. Absolutely love your stuff! Thank you for doing this!
This video was a massive help when i was recreating this ship as a mod for a game, thanks for this.
What game?
@@jamesturner9651 Cities Skylines !
@@EvametryE oh neat would never have thought of putting that in that game

Great vid - TY for creating and posting. What a great contrast between the submarine alongside and the USS Olympia.
when I was young, I made a model of this ship
When I was 11 I bought a plastic model of this ship in 1961
One of Americas Most Historic Ships !
Amazing!
Nice job, I enjoyed you walk thru also.
my father sailed on the Olympia when he was a teenager. He lied about his age to join the Navy.
Just think , she was only a minor ship in the navy . They should've saved the Oregon too. Still afloat when WW2 STARTED.
she brought home the first unknown solider that's not minor
@@The1saturn Was flag ship when the US beat the Spanish Navy in the battle of Manila Bay. She was the opposite of minor in her day
Flag ship of Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay. Makes it better than just a training ship
Not minor, she was a fighting ship and a winning ship.
What a beauty.
Damn right America IS GREAT!!!!

@@DtRockstar1 you can ;)
If we can save a ww1 era navy vessel and a vessel from 1812 we surely can save a dreadnought battleship
We should've saved a civil war ship.USS KEARSARGE .I think she lived 85 yrs .
Nice footage, music way over the top.
best I could muster at the time
Roll Tide goes with everything, and improves everything by all the percents
Damn right!
Music is perfect. Dont like it? Mute.
when I was a kid, I put together a model. Did not have to paint it.
A veteran of The Spanish American War, and WW1. I'm happy to see she still stands.☺
