This prophecy is passed on to the heir, Daemon has been the heir for many years, and the fact that Visrys didnt tell him suggests that he never trusted him at all, which is a blow to Daemon's heart, since he always dreamed that his brother would trust him, and Daemon's real goal was to become the hand of his brother
To add to this: Daemon was the heir as a precaution until Viserys had children, he was never meant to inherit the Iron Throne and was therefore never told the prophecy. That's why he was also never named Prince of Dragonstone, despite asking for many years, and why he takes Dragonstone in Ep. 2; as a slight to Viserys for never giving it to him as well as Rhaenyra being named the new heir.
no. the explanation is the one Daemon literally gave in the scene. he had years of pent up anger at his brother for pushing dragons aside. Daemon feels he let people walk all over their house instead of flexing their power with the dragons. And to see Viserys pass this on to Rhaenyra angers him even more. Daemon has no idea what the song of ice and fire and thus no feelings about it.

Poor Arrax was a young inexperienced dragon just trying to defend himself and his rider. He could probably sense how scared Luke was and just wanted to protect him. In the end it was still Aemond's fault, he was basically waving a loaded gun in Lucerys' face thinking it would be funny to scare him, but then it went off. I like to think that people assume Daemon is worst because of what he's done so far, but he wears his ugly mask for everyone to see while Rhaenyra has done her best to bury that side of her. They've always said Rhaenyra and Daemon were so alike but we've literally never seen any brutality from her except that one time she went ape💩 on the boar and wouldn't stop stabbing it even though it was already dead. I'm less worried about the wolf who's unapologetically a wolf and more cautious of the wolf in sheep's clothing. She's obviously going to do some vicious things next season and people will try and justify that by saying the Greens made her that way, I really like Rhaenyras character but I honestly think she's always had a dragon lurking locked away and it's been rattling it's cage asking to be let out, we saw it when she considered killing Laenor, we saw it when she lost control with the boar but she has good restraint as demonstrated most of this episode, now with Lucerys death the dragon stopped asking for permission. In the books they said her heart turned black, I want to see that in S2 because will people still love her when she's lost her morality? Alicent has lost some of her morals and people hate her, Rhaenyra will orchestrate darker acts than anything Alicent has ever done. I'm aware of the book but I'm interested to see how the show deviates from that as they have free range to do so considering the book is a bias account from third parties, a lot of it being hearsay.

Poor Rhaenyra. They woke up the dragon. The Dance of Dragons has begun. Aemond and Lucerys couldn’t restrain their dragons. Remember what Viserys said in the beginning? The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They’re a power men should never have trifled with. One that brought Valyria it’s doom. If we don’t mind our own histories, it will do the same to us.
@@reynical3083 what could she even do? In the end she’s just a mother continuously facing fear of her children’s deaths and later facing paranoia that someone might betray her again. Viserys never taught her to fight, just defend which would be her downfall.

I'm still not over losing Luke. He was such a sweet kid and also mastered Valyrian. That seen of him trying to soothe a terrified Arrax before flying was such a good insight into his character. They did such a good job of making me care about those kids in such a short period of time.

@@d3l3tes00n It will be really interesting to see if Aemond owns up to killing Lucaerys intentionally or tells people the truth about it being an accident.
@@andrewplehn4805 yeah, i'm looking forward to seeing what they do with him. When Aemond lost his eye as a kid, he didn't really take responsibility for provoking his cousins and nephews. The argument wouldn't have turned as violent as it did if he didn't insult them in the first place. Now that he is older, there is potential for Aemond to learn from Lucerys's death and own up to it. But, will he? Who knows? We'll just have to wait and see what direction the show goes.
According to the showrunners, he had that look because he realized he lost control of his dragon - I guess Viserys never told his other children that the idea they control the dragons is an illusion, as he did to Rhaenyra..
"The mad king" was named King Aerys II not Aegon. And Vhagar, Aemmond's dragon, is war/battle tested; Aemmond shouldn't have been using his dragon to taunt Luke. Baela and Rhaena are Jace and Luke's cousins, not half sisters. The 3 riding off was Jace and Luke and Rhaenys, who was going off to man the Gullet
I was looking for this comment. They kept saying the other dragons had not known war. That's why Aemond should not have used his dragon as a play thing. It slowed his immaturity and his disrespect towards a weapon of mass destruction. Luke's dragon felt his fear and was trying to defend itself from another animal that was snapping at it. The Dance of Dragons is here.
Is that book canon (I didn't read)? My understanding was that the vast majority supported Aegon II now that Viserys was dead and unable to punish them for breaking oath, and it's initially just a few minor houses around the Crownlands that supported team Black. That's why the emphasis was on having significantly more dragons being the trump card over the greens' vastly larger armies (Hightowers + Lannister + the Reach + Riverlands + any other houses that declared for greens).
@@atkim122 Spoilers Obviously since this is season 2-3 Territory Rhaenyra had more supporters but Aegon II had more wealthy/larger supporters. There were also several larger houses that publicly supported Aegon II but never actually went to war (Like House Baratheon, Borros made the excuse that Dorne was attacking and sent his army to the border instead of supporting Aegon II's army )
@@atkim122 Half of the Reach houses supported Rhaenyra. House Beesbury, Tarly, Rowan, Oakheart, Caswell and Costaynes. All of the Vale supported her since her mother Queen Aemma was born Aemma Arryn. All of the North supported her. Majority of Riverlands. Also most of the Crownlands. Only regions that didn't back her claim was the Stormsland and Westerlands. So in the beginning the Blacks had much more support than the Greens. Not to mention Dragons.
@@MR.Z1991 thanks for explaining. I was basing the riverlords’ support off of Otto’s confidence at the green council meeting that most would join them (when he was talking about culling any Daemon loyalists left in the city watch).
The true power of Targaryans: become everyone's favorite characters through their brutality, and still surprise everyone when they become murderous tyrants🤣
The dragon Damon was singing to was Vermithor, he was Jaehaerys dragon and didn't have a rider during Viserys reign, Damon was claiming him for the blacks.
How crazy was this finale, Rhaenyra tried her best to keep things calm, but it was bound to happen, war is about to begin! Viserys death, Rheanys's grave warning about the greens, her breached baby's birth/death and ultimately the death of Lucerys by Aemond ( precipitated by his chase of Luke). Fire and Blood is coming next season, I've have thoroughly enjoy your reactions. Stay safe ✌
Aegon was gonna be made king even if viserys hadnt said thise words before his death lol. Idk why yall solely blame Alicent. The realm unfortunately was never gonna accept a woman as heir.
When Rhaenyrer turned after receiving the news of Luke’s death… it seemed in that moment she aged ten years, Emma D’arcy emoted so much in that final look.
I didnt read the books but from what i've heard from people this was just an appetizer :D the real story and conflict starts now with S2 i cant f'ning wait!
They say the worst scene of the entire show is coming in S2. I've read the books and I know which one it is, I'm not sure I could handle it.. Still excited about the new season to come out!
Its like two dog owners who get a little to close with thier dogs that arent properly socilized or trained attack one another. I like to think the dragons mistook the animosity between the two as genuine danger and disobeyd out of instinct
Also if u rewatch when Daemon comes to tell Rhaenyra about Luc he’s crying the whole time he wipes his eye with his right hand while his left is on his sword. It’s represents sadness and anger Daemon is both.
I like the idea that the Dragons respond to the base instincts. They dont understand subltey. Aemond did want revenge and he was angry which is why he was chasing Luc, and the only revenge a Dragon understands is death. Luc felt ashamed and did want to fight back and his dragon responded to those deeper feelings, not necessarily the more sensible feelings that they wouldve actually followed.
Daemon is singing to Vermithor, known as the Bronze Fury in High Valyrian, the third oldest and largest known dragon after Balerion the Black Dread and Vhagar the Queen of All Dragons, Vermithor is currently without a rider, they're trying to get him on their side.
Viserys's line to Rhaenyra from the first episode comes into play here. "the idea that we control the dragons is an illusion." The dragons are more like a blunt axe than a surgeons scalpel.
The page Otto gave to Rhaenyra that she ripped out in episode 1 the page was about Nymeria who fled the Valyrian freeholds with her people, Alicent basically was trying to tell Rhaeneyra to flee Westeros with her family the same way Nymeria did. I thought it was dumb to have Alicent act like she doesn't want Rhaenyra and her children dead and wants to avoid war, but everything she's doing is going to cause a war in the first place, she hid Viserys's death from his daughter and his brother and wants to send "peaceful terms" after all of that and expect them to just accept those terms when we all know damned well that if it were the other way around Alicent wouldn't accept those "peaceful terms".
It’s not dumb. 1) Alicent and Rhaenyra were extremely close childhood friends. There is probably still a part of her that cares about her. 2) Alicent opposing the murder of Rhaenyra is actually a political advantage. By offering a peace treaty, the Greens’ treason can be played off as a righteous and noble decision, because many lords firmly believe that rhaenyra is unfit to rule and that aegon’s claim is genuinely a better decision for the realm. However if she ordered the execution of rhaenyra, the Greens’ motivations would appear much more self righteous and subject them to much more potential opposition, not to mention risk of being branded traitors by the entire realm. 3) We don’t know that Alicent wouldn’t accept those terms. It also could literally never be “the other way around.”

So I know you said that Alicent’s kids are more spoiled because they’re princes, but Rhaenyra’s sons are Princes too because they are the sons of the heir and are heirs to the throne before Alicent’s kids are.
"Her grief was terrifying." That's the thought that came to my mind when I saw the expression on Rhaenyra's face after she found out that Lucerys had been killed. Any chance for the Blacks and the Greens to settle things peacefully is over. It's on now.
I guarantee you Rhaenyra and Alicent will still want to make peace with each other at the start of next season and Daemon and Otto will keep pushing for more violence
The theory goes, the dragons have a psychic bond with their riders. So Arrax probably felt the fear and anxiety from Lucerys and when Vhagar was threatening it, it prob tried to do a show of strength, sort of like a smaller dog barking at the big one. An impulsive action from a very young dragon. Vhagar on the other hand was a dragon bred for war from the early days of Conquest. It barely tolerates Aemond and couldn't understand he was just playing games with his nephew. When attacked upon, its war instinct took over and just finished off the threat.
@@myong2206 what? Lmao they literally just made this random shit up instead aemond just killing him like he’s supposed to. It’s literally drawn out for you like you know the source material
Dany’s dragons didn’t outright disobey her in the show, but there was a scene where she discovers that Drogon had burnt a young girl, which led to her locking up her dragons.
They disobeyed her all the time. Drogn ran away for a year and when he saved her from the pit he flew were he wanted and refused to fly her back. The only reason she had complete control over the dragons in seasons 6,7 and 8 is because they ran out of books and D&D are not good writers without GRRMs work to follow
Anyone seen "The Last Kingdom?" Aemond was on it first and Haelena too. Aemond's character was Alfred's illegitimate son who became a warrior-monk under Uthred and Haelena is Aethelflaed's daughter.
Arrax was a very young dragon who got scared and was trying to defend himself and Lucerys, because I think he could feel he was nervous. Aemond decided to play and chase Lucerys, in order to scare him. The fact is that he forgot he was riding an experienced-war dragon, trained to kill - Vhagar took part to the Aegon's Conquest with her rider Visenya, and at this time all she knew was war and fighting. Aemond's dragon defended herself by killing, no matter who was the opponent..
It was pretty vague in the books but even than it was described that Aemond intentionally wanted to kill Lucerys. Also another change they did from the books of Rhaenys location when Viserys passed. In the books she was already in Dragonstone with Rhaenyra, Daemon, and Corlys
@@kidgforce1 Exactly, i feel like this is something most people are mising when it comes to the book. And GRRM already confirmed that the book and the show are different canons.
Vhagar & vermithor are the only dragons in the series who have seen war, that’s when Luke’s dragon attacked Vhagar retaliated as she is used to being a war dragon

Team Black all the way. I loved this first season and I really enjoyed the finale. Great reaction and commentary as always. I hope y’all will follow the second season so I can follow y’all!
thats what the king was trying to say in the 1st episode when he said its an illusion that we control dragons... they tolerate targaryans but they are not their masters. they are living creatures
18:58 "I've never imagined he would do that " Srsly, you mean the guy who killed his wife with a rock 4 episodes ago?? I love daemon he's my favorite character but c'mon he's not an angel of course it excepted from him to shit like that
Daemon isn't blinded by the throne or power, he's angry and upset that his brother is dead, Viserys never trusted him with Aegon the conquerors dream, and Rhaenyra didn't immediately plunge into a civil war. He fears that she will be a weak queen like her father, even though he loved him he did think he was weak.
Vhagar(the big dragon) grew up in war Vhagar was one of the original three dragon that helped aegon conquered the seven kingdoms But the young dragon that attacked Vhagar was young and not properly trained so it attacked. Vhagar just didn’t let that slide
People can say that Rhaenyra miscarried because of the stress and shock but honestly, this is what happens with inbreeding. It’s a small problem I have with this world which is that they only show that inbreeding can lead to mental problems but not physical ones. Deformities, weakened immune systems, the list goes on. Also *The stage is set, the music has started, and now we have taken the first steps of the Dance Of The Dragons!* I knew the finale was going to be huge but HOLY GODDAMN SHIT!!! The dogfight or really the DRAGON FIGHT was absolutely horrifying, and the way it ended…..the look on Aemond’s face was absolutely of regret. He wanted to bully Luke but he didn’t want to kill him, and when Vhagar did it against his wishes he knew he started a war. Emma D’arcy in their Inside The Episode interview said that even though Rhaenyra had lost her parents she had never known what true loss was, this was son, HER SON, she will burn all of the greens to ash!
The beach scene was longer and far more impactful but they cut it down just like when they cut the scene where Daemon is consoling his daughters after the death of their mothers
*_"The idea that we control the Dragons....is an illusion....they're a power that men should never have trifled with"_* Viserys speaking Rhaenyra before naming her his heir
Arrax was clearly uneasy the entire time since the moment they arrived at Storm's End and once Vhagar was following them that's when Arrax tried to defend himself so he breathed fire onto Vhagar who got irritated by the much younger and smaller dragon hurting her so she went ahead to kill him. You can train animals as much as you want but there are moments where they will still do as they want and in this case the implications were clearly much bigger than Aemond had initially anticipated so now he's responsible for the death of Rhaneyra's second child.
always love to see people who think daemon is anything but a sleaze be shocked when he shows even more of his colors, despite celebrating his nephew's death, beating an innocent man and killing his former wife... among others.
Vheygar (Aemond's dragon) is the oldest and biggest claimed dragon. She belonged to Visenya, one of the sister-wives of Aegon the Conqueror - she has absolutely seen war, more than any other dragon alive arguably - Vheygar is maybe 4 times the size of Drogon This season is already history - it actually only covers about 4 pages of history in the Targaryen history book George wrote called "Fire and Blood" - it is different from GoT because Thrones, or the series of novels (known as A Song of Ice and Fire) has yet to be actually concluded by George RR Martin - ASOIAF ended thus far on the 5th book with Jon Snow and his dealings with the Night's Watch and a particular vengeful boy named Ollie, to give context - this part of Targaryen history is very important because this explains why by the time of Daenerys, dragons were basically only myth Love you guys' reactions btw :)
One really weird thing about this show so far is that they seem to have a rule that Damon is the only one who's allowed to deliberately kill people. Hopefully that changes next season, and we won't have to spend the whole war watching the dragons barbeque armies on their own while the riders run behind them begging them to stop.
The producers said that this season was intended as a setup for the actual story they want to tell, being the war between the Greens and Blacks. That's why it had several time jumps, to fit all the family history into this first season. If this season was just to set the foundation and was still so engaging, the next should be quite the ride.
Yep, Season 1 was more of a prologue. It was my biggest concern out of all the planned seasons for this show (4 in total). Because it had numerous hurdles to overcome including a very controversial final season of GoT, which, resulted in an enormous portion of the fanbase departing in disappointment -- myself included. Glad I gave HotD a chance because it made me fall in love with Westeros again.
King Jaherys said that men were not meant to ride dragons. Also remember how Drogon would fly around freely eating sheep and people and causing a bunch of mayhem until Denaerys finally figured out how to control him
Arrax (Luc's dragon) was very young, spooked by the gigantic elder dragon shadowing him and, probably in response to his rider's fear panicked to the point of flaming Vhagar. Vhagar, being the oldest, largest dragon and "the hardened survivor of a hundred battles" (she was the only remaining survivor of the three dragons used to conquer Westeros for the Targaryens in the first place...ridden by Aegon the Conqueror's sister/wife Visenya originally) wasn't going to tolerate an attack by essentially an upstart hatchling and responded in kind (poor Lucerys just happened to be on Arrax when she went "chomp" ) :(
I'm not sure if it's in books or movies but someone notable said that the valerians don't really control dragons. That they can have a bond and dragons can do as they wish.
When Daemon said 13 dragons he was including younglings like Lucery's young dragon as well as riderless wild dragons. In reality at that time when Daemon was counting dragons, they only have Syrax, Caraxes, Meleys, and probably Vermax as adult dragons who can effectively fight a war. Meanwhile, the Greens have Vhagar, Sunfyre (Aegon's), Dreamfyre (Helaena's), and Tessarion (Daeron's). Count the fact that Rhaenyra was still recovering from childbirth, at that time only Daemon, Rhaenys, and Jace really could ride to war against King's Landing. So Rhaenyra was ultimately right in exercising caution, and Daemon was rushing too much. If they proceeded as Daemon had planned to bum rush King's Landing, it would have been 3 adult dragons from the Blacks vs 4 adult dragons from the Greens.
i wish they had kept luke’s death intentional, the way it was in the books, because this just makes aemond look like an incompetent idiot. like, he somehow didn’t understand that his dragon is a weapon of war and not a toy to be used to scare people?? i love the show but wish that there were some actual evil characters and that everyone wasn’t just morally grey lol.

Would really like to see moment when he (Aemond) return to Kings Landing and see reaction from Alicent and Otto.

@@atkim122 Spoilers Obviously since this is season 2-3 Territory
Rhaenyra had more supporters but Aegon II had more wealthy/larger supporters. There were also several larger houses that publicly supported Aegon II but never actually went to war (Like House Baratheon, Borros made the excuse that Dorne was attacking and sent his army to the border instead of supporting Aegon II's army )

"The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion. They’re a power man should never have trifled with." The ending is a nice callback
"What do Dragons eat?" - "Anything they want."
Daemon is singing to Vermithor, known as the Bronze Fury in High Valyrian, the third oldest and largest known dragon after Balerion the Black Dread and Vhagar the Queen of All Dragons, Vermithor is currently without a rider, they're trying to get him on their side.

oooof when you said "its young still, it will grow" for Arrax, i felt that one

Or the show just went off the rails the last two episodes

The book is a report of people who were not there. I guess, Aemond would never confess he lost control over his dragon, just saying I killed him.

People can say that Rhaenyra miscarried because of the stress and shock but honestly, this is what happens with inbreeding. It’s a small problem I have with this world which is that they only show that inbreeding can lead to mental problems but not physical ones. Deformities, weakened immune systems, the list goes on.

"woah I never imagined he would do that" this about the guy who murdered his own wife and beat an innocent messenger to death in anger.
They have made the point a few times that the riders only control the dragons when the dragons allow it.
Vheygar (Aemond's dragon) is the oldest and biggest claimed dragon. She belonged to Visenya, one of the sister-wives of Aegon the Conqueror - she has absolutely seen war, more than any other dragon alive arguably - Vheygar is maybe 4 times the size of Drogon
This season is already history - it actually only covers about 4 pages of history in the Targaryen history book George wrote called "Fire and Blood" - it is different from GoT because Thrones, or the series of novels (known as A Song of Ice and Fire) has yet to be actually concluded by George RR Martin - ASOIAF ended thus far on the 5th book with Jon Snow and his dealings with the Night's Watch and a particular vengeful boy named Ollie, to give context - this part of Targaryen history is very important because this explains why by the time of Daenerys, dragons were basically only myth
Love you guys' reactions btw :)

The dragon that Daemon was singing to is called Vermithor, it was his grandfather's
King Jaherys said that men were not meant to ride dragons. Also remember how Drogon would fly around freely eating sheep and people and causing a bunch of mayhem until Denaerys finally figured out how to control him
Aemond did the "F around and find out"
Arrax (Luc's dragon) was very young, spooked by the gigantic elder dragon shadowing him and, probably in response to his rider's fear panicked to the point of flaming Vhagar. Vhagar, being the oldest, largest dragon and "the hardened survivor of a hundred battles" (she was the only remaining survivor of the three dragons used to conquer Westeros for the Targaryens in the first place...ridden by Aegon the Conqueror's sister/wife Visenya originally) wasn't going to tolerate an attack by essentially an upstart hatchling and responded in kind (poor Lucerys just happened to be on Arrax when she went "chomp" ) :(
U guys been amazing with the videos this week !!!
25:55 the 3rd dragon is meleys. When rhaenys says she is going to “patrol the gullet on meleys” I assume she’s taking off here.
King Viserys said it towards the beginning of the show: The idea that we control the dragons is an illusion.
He wasn't wrong.
Visrys: It's an illusion we tell ourselves that we control the dragons.
So damn true.
I can’t wait for season and get to see the North and the Starks again !!!
