Here in the Philippines (not sure where else in the world believes the same), most arowana keepers believe that when an arowana dies, it most likely saved it's master from a tragedy, sickness, or death. That instead of the master suffering, the arowana would take it's own life to save its master.

My wife is our fish woman. She had to leave to cry as she just had an adult Oscar pass in almost the same fashion. got spooked and tried to jump, landed back in the water on the wood, then darted around knocking himself to pieces. My wife tried everything to save Rutger, worked on him for 19 hours straight..but he quietly passed in the QT tank as soon as she finally fell asleep, head down on the QT tanks table. Its not just a fish, you are not being silly. We had Rutger for 8 years and his death has saddened the whole family. Stay strong Joey. we are all pulling for you and him.

    - My 3 year old RTC 30"crashed into a sturdy piece of drift wood after i startled him turning on the lights in the pond.
    - His swimming got erratic and his breathing was labored, after a few hours he was laying flat on his back and couldn't swim upright.
    - After a night of me keeping an eye on him, it got worse due the tank having strong circulation pumps and he was just all over the place and crashing into things.
    - His protective coat started falling off after 36 hours and he slowed his breathing so i got scared so i put him into 8" of water and i held him bare handed upright for about 2 hours while the water circulated around him. I noticed bubbles coming out of his anal cavity bit by bit so i rubbed his stomach and i saw bubbles leaving his mouth.
    - I let him go and he was able to rest on his side and then gradually he was upright..the entire thing lasted 72 hours maybe.
I saw this asian guy on youtube who used a syringe to draw the excess gas in the swim bladder out for a red tail to correct himself to a point where the fish can equalize itself naturally, I didn't have that luxury. Your way more experienced than i am, just sharing my experience. When your fish is hurt, try anything within reason.
Sorry your going through this.. all the best

SEE.....THIS is what a Stabilization tank does. The first one I made I made from.thinking about how we stabilized our old horse who was having gut issues. But it works for fish too. Its a shame not more people know this technique. I mostly deal with Koi hybrids and found alot of asian remedies for this issue in Koi was to actually hold the fish and literally massage it gently until it released the excess fluids and gas. It kinda reminds me of when a baby has bad colic and you have to lay it over your lap, pat its back and massage its belly to help release the trapped gas.

The ignorance in this comment section is insane. Do you not think if there was a fish vet he would take him? This is his prize fish, he would do ANYTHING for it. I'm sure he doesn't want to hear about things he can't do. The second comment that is ridiculous as well is thinking the rays have stung him. Again, if that was the case he would know this, there would be some kind of wound on the Arowana. Please stop commenting these things and just give him some support. He's going to probably lose his prize fish. He needs support not "advice"

You didn't take the time to research and study these particular animals and when you do that it becomes more than a fish. It becomes a family member just like a dog would.

Brianna W when people ask me "do you have a pet?" I always say no even tho i have 5turtles, one poodle and I'm currently fostering 9baby frogs that will be soon released back into the wild(i have rescued other animals as well on the past and will be a vet), i say "no" because they are not just "pets" they are my family, my babies and creatures that need me for whichever reason (my dog was abused, the baby frogs when going to be killed, i rescued kittens who were thrown away by irresponsible owners, and so on goes the list.. some people might think this is nothing, but for those animals it gave them another chance at life...

    Hey Joey,
I feel your pain. You are one the most conscientious fish keepers I have ever seen. This is an accident. There is no fault to find in this tragic accident.
If it helps lessen and guilt you might feel. In my educated and experience opinion I believe you are right
I worked at a public aquarium in my younger days. We had a 13,000 gallon asian arowana display. I know they are amazing jumpers. We lost a large arowana in the similar manner. We lost a huge an arapaima from another display. To say that these fish they are Skittish is an understatement.
Be at peace brother. My prayers are with you.

"I know he's just a fish. I know it doesnt make sense to a lot of people, but it does to me." Buddy, he's not just a fish. He's a pet, he's your family. You love him and so do we.
My fish are my lifeline. I'm chronically depressed and suicidal with PTSD, BPD and a shitload of other bullshit. When I get to that point where my mind backs me into a corner and I'm on the verge of harming or even killing myself, my thoughts go to my fish. They'll suffer and starve without me, and I can't stand that thought.
We all have different hobbies and vices. And pets are family. So at least I understand that he's not "just a fish," just like mine aren't.
And besides. They're animals; living creatures in your care. They deserve as much respect as any other pet. They depend on you for literally everything from food to the very oxygen they breathe. So I understand.

Attach part of one of those pool noodles to the top of him and a weight of some sort underneath. Not so much weight to sink him, but enough to keep his bottom facing down. Even if his swim bladder never recovers, he should be able to move around upright and get food. Don't give up on him! (Search goldfish wheelchair here on UA-cam to get ideas of how to make this work)
Please like this so he can see it, it's a much better alternative to floating him on the top in a cramped container.

These things happen in the aquarium hobby and is the reason I left the hobby (didn't have a backup when power went out resulting in my tank dying) but whatever the outcome you must come back stronger. We will all support you and your decisions at this time.

Joey I'm so sorry, this is so shocking and heart breaking. You must never say he's just a fish, he's your friend, you've been together for years and you have a bond. I lost one of my dogs earlier this year and it's very hard. I really feel for you, but something I can recommend is setting a date, and if nothing has improved by then put him to sleep. Good luck, and love from Scotland

Do you think Joey invested 5 years in caring for his fish just to get views? Invested years of time and energy in the hobby and creating a new aged encyclopedia to help us just for fame. I pity all you keyboard ninjas , you must be defecting some of your hardships by posting negative things here... you must be in a really bad space or never felt love for anything before ... wishing you, joey and the unnamed all the best

Just seeing and hearing how much you love him makes me cry.. I watch all of your videos.. I've never seen any other Arowana have such a strong connection with their owner. You did literally ALL YOU COULD. To some people, this would be the end. You made it clear that sometimes crazy things happen, it doesn't mean that anything was done wrong, it was an accident that happened unfortunately. I have cried for days over my prized discus, my entire brackish tank I lost when the tank broke, I have had heartbreak. It happens. I'm glad you kept going. Thank you for all the videos, good and bad. There is knowledge in all of them. Thank you for sharing your heartache to help everyone else avoid it. 🙏 best wishes!

For all of you guys commenting about seeing a vet or making him a wheel chair for fish, please stop. He knows what he's doing. He is most likely more experienced than the vet will be in fish. It's like if you guys were to say, my fish has ick let me take him to the vet. You do not do that because the vet will have a simple respond. Either euthanize him or try the same medicine that you can get at your lfs. If he makes it he makes it and if he dosent at least the fish would die knowing he had a owner that loved him and did everything possible. So stop commenting such ignorant comments

Honestly, as bad as it looks, I believe he will make it. Seeing the way he's floating, it looks like the damaged side of the swim bladder is floating toward the surface, proving it is a swim bladder issue (in my eyes, I don't know as much about fish as you but I do study fish, because I'm a fish nerd). I think that if you would do something to help him float upright, he might make a more stable recovery, and he will move around. He does seem to move (not in a scared, "Trying to get away" way) when you hold him upright. Keeping him upright and closer to the surface might aid in the healing process. I think that, after he recovers, you should also either cut off the top portion of the wood, or fill the tank higher so it's less likely to happen again.

Losing my dog was the hardest thing I've ever gone through and admittedly more difficult than losing family members when I was young. I cried every time one of my hamsters died and they reproduced for several years...my point is I do understand it and I am terribly sorry. On a lighter note I absolutely love your content! I found your channel a few days ago while watching Takashi Amano ADA and Green Machine aquascaping videos. I believe the first video I saw was the water bridge and I've been hooked ever since. I'm not talking about friendly suggestions, I'm talking about people who first completely ignore the fact that he's human and probably feeling bad about this whole situation and then start saying "you better do this" "stop doing this" or "you're doing it wrong".
With that said, I'm sending all my love to that poor fish and hoping this all gets fixed some way or another.Have hope, he might get better and recover with time. I'm really sorry he's in such a critical state but I'm sure you're doing everything you can to help him!

Most people buy asian arawana for around $1000 TO $2000 when they are pencil size so they can develop a bond with the fish as it grows which is clearly the case here. A 5 year old AA is going to cost you a good $10,000 and will have no bond with him. Lets just hope the fish recovers.

Fish totally have personalities, individual traits, and character! While I love to watch the various fish that I have, and I thoroughly enjoy their moods and actions/antics, there are some who believe that fish do not hold any such traits. This is what makes them more than "just fish"! They're not there just for entertainment, or something to look nice in a room. That feeling is what separates hobbyists/enthusiasts from "fish owners". Joe is much more than a "fish owner", you can see it in all of his videos! Keep up the amazing work Joe!

Joey this is sad. Even tho it is a fish 5 years worth of time, effort and love has made the arowana family. Hoping for a speedy recovery. Keep positive thoughts.

You are what got me into this fish hobby and it's been my dream care for my own aro since last year. I currently have two 90g fish tanks one filled with a 7 inch Oscar a year old, and at least 9-12 cichlids that will be getting a new rank soon. You are truly an inspiration to us!

God, it was a mistake reading through the comment section. It seems mostly filled with people either making jokes about grilling your fish, or calling you a murderer. Murder is *intentionally* killing someone, Joey very clearly from this video and his past videos cares deeply for this fish, having mentioned many times now that this fish has been his friend for years. He's doing what he can to try and save the fish, and I'm sure that if he feels like the fish won't make a comeback, he's willing to peacefully euthanize it, he has even mentioned that fact.
The rest of y'all making jokes or hoping the fish dies are a bunch of assholes.
Anyways, I hope he pulls through and if not, that he goes peacefully. I really do believe he has a connection to you and I bet it brings him comfort when you are around. He is in my prayers.

I've been watching you for years, because I find your content around my favorite hobby very interesting and that your passion and dedication to this is just awesome. I have seen you get very frustrated with the comments section especially during live feeds this year, and I hope that the absolutely idiotic ones posted on these recent videos get completely ignored by you. You aren't doing this stuff for these keyboard warriors, you are doing this for yourself, as well as those of us that respect this hobby for it's education, fun and zen that it brings us. I'm glad that you showed this matters to you, cause it should, and there is zero shame in that. The haters don't matter and will likely always be there due to the popularity you have gained. Tune them out, they don't get it. Hang in there Joey, hope the arrowana pulls through. Cheers.

Sure hope he pulls through! Very interested in seeing so. Nothing wrong about sharing your personal feelings towards such a beautiful animal. Good Luck to you both!
To be a keeper of fish as well - even not as exotic as yours, is still heartbreaking to see ones' favourite fish severely damaged.

It isnt just about a fish.. it is putting an animals life in your hands akin to what a vet does. If you ever have to care for anything, you will realize what happens when an injury happens and there is nothing you can do to make it better.

nah u say just a fish cuz u eat fish and u dont own fish (least im assuming)dude. To u fish are just animals that u wouldnt even think twice of gutting but when u own one they become ur companion and that rings true for every animal. When u own an animal of any kind for so long they become ur companion. I understand ur sentiment tho, people cry over pet bugs and im here like squash em all.... now that i own fish i dont eat fish anymore XD. same with turtles. I used to eat turtles but ever since i owned some i dont even go near a a turtle shell bowl
