For anyone wondering why the 77th went through TWO years of training in the States, it's because of the lack of shipping. MANY divisions didn't go overseas until the buildup for D-Day because why ship people to England if they are just going to sit and, in the meantime, you have to use precious cargo ships to feed them there? Keep them in the States while you send all the equipment first so you can mate men to material just before D-Day. Same for the Pacific Theatre... One reason the US soldiers were so good once in combat was because for hundreds of thousands of them they trained, trained, trained for f'ing months and months and months before going overseas.

      @brianeleighton 8 місяців тому +4

The 77th didn't deploy for 2 years because they weren't an operational division. They were an experimental division the Army formed to literally run tests on. For those two years the Army was running tests and experiments on them. As for the quality of American troops when they first shipped out, that is simply not true. The majority of the troops involved in D-Day were also not raw green troops from the States. We learned how to fight in North Africa, Sicily and Italy prior to D-Day.

33:48 that Sherman tank has a snorkel system attached to it. One is air intake the other exhaust.

Flame throwers were used EXTENSIVELY in the island hopping campaign. Very often they were used to help clear undergrowth and heavy vegetation to help reveal where all the traps and wires were hidden.

Also, don't forget flame throwers were invented in World War 1.They were used to help clear out trenches as well....

33:44 This is a DD (duplex drive) Sherman. those "fins" on the back are not a sound system but ducts to redirect both the intake air and exhaust so that the sherman tank can wade in shallower water as it moves from the landing ship to the beach. these shermans would also normally be equiped with propellers and a large canvas rigging to increase their mobility and buoyancy in deeper water. however this particular DD does not have the deployable canvas rigging usually for one of two reasons.
1: the Marines wanted to be able to use their tanks for infantry support on the way to the beach, and the rigging would have gotten in the way.
2: the ocean was shallow enough where the Shermans were released from the Landing ships that the rigging would be redundant and would simply add weight to the tank.

15:00 a fair number of retired veterans end up working for the post office, because they can start in their 30s, carry their government benefits over, work another 20 years there, and then get *two* government pensions when they retire fully in their 50s.

@48:00 Yeah... I feel that saying a lot. Don't forget it's sister "Too valuable to production." The long and short of it if you are good at something higher ups will keep you there as long as possible. For example, back in February my supervisor came to me asking "I know you don't want to do x position, but with the person doing the position leaving will you cover it until night shift over." I agreed because night shift was only going until the first week of March. When March came around it was instantly you and the person who was suppose to be doing it are going to alternate days so neither of you would get tired. That lasted maybe 2 weeks before it was just me doing the position because we were constantly short and even though some of those positions I could fill we never alternated. I trained two other people to do it for them to be moved to other programs and I am still doing that position.

10:50 Technically no, but the Kreigsmarine was screaming at Hitler to allow them to U-Boat more American ships as they were attempting to avoid the mistake of WW1. It was inevitable with or without him declaring war; the US would have very likely declared war on Germany at some point.
15:00 Adam Driver is a US Marine, and the only reason he didn't do more time beyond his first 2 years was due to a severe motorcycle injury to the sternum. Baseline for some folks to my knowledge is 2 to 6 years.
17:50 Basic training to my knowledge (2014); USAF 6 weeks; US Navy and Army 9 Weeks, US Marine Corps 12 Weeks. That's just basic.
23:45 Basic training was the most common source of fatalities in the US Army in the "Pax Americana" post-Vietnam; more so than even combat, up until 2003 (to my memory).
33:48 DouglasCampbell already answered, but I'll add; Snorkels. Allows you to drive a vehicle partially submerged, normally needed for river crossings. You see a lot of Russian modern tanks have funky looking ones.
35:30 Wait until you hear the story of the "Stealth Battleship" HMS Revenge as told by Drachinfel. British snuck a whole BB to shell the Germans, and they thought they were being struck by the RAF.

Germany didn’t have to declare war on America because Japan attacked first which went against Germany and Japan’s agreement of defense if the other had war declared on them

Just so you know, a flamethrower doesn't just kill you by burning you to death. If the flamethrower was being used to clear bunkers even if you avoided the flames you would die. Because the fire consumes all of the oxygen in the room and you will suffocate to death. So basically your options are to burn or suffocate to death, both are really bad ways to die. That being said the life expectancy of a flamethrower operator wasn't long in combat. They were going into combat with two giant tanks full of flammable liquid on their back. If the tanks got hit by a tracer round the operator would go up like a roman candle.

Dropping Napalm Bombs was big during Vietnam but the Man-Portable (and Tank) Flamethrowers were used extensively in WWII, particularly in the Pacific Theater due to how well dug in the Japanese were on their islands. It was either send in several squads of soldiers to try and root them out, losing dozens in the process, or shoot liquid fire in until they burn to death or suffocate. We chose liquid fire.
And a Flamethrower wasn't and STILL is not considered a War Crime, most nations simply don't use them anymore (particularly Western Nations). There are several reasons for this.
    1) It is illegal to use the on "Civilian Targets" which seems common sense but think about it. 95% of the Combat the US has been in over the past 24 years has been in areas populated by civilians. So having a dude with a flamethrower on in the middle of an Urban Environment simply won't work. It's bulky and you'll likely end up causing more harm than good. With how "litigated" wars are now (for Westerners) if you have a dude shoot a flamethrower and the building had some terrorists in it, but ALSO some civilians and they all are killed then did that soldier just commit a war crime since he used and "incendiary device on a civilian target"? Depends on who gets to decide.
    2) Wars that Western Nations fight in are won or loss based on PR. If the Public turns against the war the US loses. This was evident with Vietnam. We were kicking the North Vietnamese's @sses during the Vietnam War from a "Numbers" standpoint and the US won, tactically speaking, the Tet Offensive but it turned Public Opinion firming against the war. All of that being said, Westerners tend to have weaker stomachs when it comes to war because we've been so removed from them for so long. WWII was the last time one was fought "in the West". So now, Westerns want wars to be "clean" and "heroic" like they see in the movies they grew up on even though that's an oxymoron to "War". But that's how a lot of them feel. So if all of the sudden you saw a bunch of Marines walking up to a building garrisoned by the Taliban and hit it with a Flamethrower, sending all of them screaming out, on fire, and burning to death, then a lot of Americans would find that revolting... Personally, I say "Get some!!!". Taliban, AQ, ISIS... All a bunch of savages. Much like the Japanese were.
    3) We simply have more effective weaponry. Sure the Flamethrower was effective once you got to where you needed to be but it was bulky, made you a big target, and was dangerous. Why carry around a flamethrower if you can just mark the target and have a jet or drone drop a bomb on it?

Deciding to declare war on the U.S. was a military decision by Hitler that's only exceeded by the idiocy of opening a two front war. Because yeah, as isolationist as we were back then, we probably would have fought Japan and just continued lend/lease to support Europe. The sucker-punch is the factor that riled the Americans, and Germany had no such equivalent event.
