But be aware to NEVER contact or give any information to anyone in a UA-cam comment section. And the only thing I sell is my Patreon membership found in the description of this video.

    • @JosephCarlsonShow

Down about 16% with the dividend portfolio. Down about 33% with growth portfolio. The dividend portfolio is significantly larger than growth so the overall performance is not too bad. I think I’m down around 20% on the year. I feel okay with that performance considering how things could have gone, and I think it’s decent performance in contrast to others.

This is my first year investing, felt like the bear market was a good time to jump in. You’ve really helped in my process thinking about companies. I have 3 ETFs I’m DCA’ing in, and about 30 dividend growth stocks. Had a goal of getting 10k in by the end of the year but fell a little short to 8,750. Still just sticking to the weekly process of around 100 dollars a week and dollar cost averaging - sometimes a bit more or less depending on bills and opportunities. When I first started watching the channel my portfolio was around 4k and I’ve seen my dividend snowball growing. Lots of cool and helpful stuff you’ve shared this year, so thanks man.

Investing is not for everybody, you just need a strong stomach too see your portfolio go down. It might be wiser for a novice to start with Index investing, but it is not easy. My point is that when investing you need education first. I know there are success stories by keep on doing DCA as well. To invest in growth stocks it is another level, definitely you need to know what are you doing.

I'm 45, so I have less of an investing window than you do. To me, yield matters a lot - I have a goal of living off of dividends rather than relying on share price to increase so I can sell. You point out that SPGI is growing their dividend, but the dividend is growing slower than the share price is. 10 years ago the yield was close to 2% ($1.04 dividend, ~$45-75 share price), now it is close to 1% ($3.40 dividend, $334 share price). If this trend continues, it will become more and more expensive to buy dividend income from SPGI. I believe that yield is not the MOST important thing in investing, but I also think that you are not putting enough emphasis on it. $100,000 invested in SPGI would only yield $250 a quarter.

@@glennshoemake4200 My portfolio is actually very similar to Joseph's portfolio from a few years ago. I'm long in both VZ and T, though I don't have a position in MO. I try to keep my portfolio yield between 3-5%, and do so by changing the sector target % as I make contributions. With a 5 year portfolio dividend CAGR of about 5.5%, I am reasonably confident that my dividend income will outpace inflation. I do have some low yield companies, such as AAPL and MSFT, but because of my goals and time horizon, they are smaller positions for now.

I’m excited to see your commitment to a mobile iOS app as that’s my primary engagement to the show and investing. I’d like to offer a couple suggestions 1) adding stock comparison graph overlay tools - in addition to fundamentals, I see selecting an investment as an opportunity cost to another potential investment and bring able to compare stocks on equal footings is a great value add 2) showing zero on graphs so that the magnitude of growth isn’t visually skewed. For example in the SPGI shares outstanding graph in this video the lowest metric isn’t zero so it doesn’t visually show the full context of the share count deltas. Thanks again!

I have never seen a trader as open and transparent as Debra Haycraft with her clients. The way she decides to make a profit for her clients. she allows you to express your fears and she still rests your fears and that is my respect. I don't normally comment on videos, but this word should be included. she is really cool.

Hey Joe, not sure if you'll see this. I've been an OG subscriber from 2019. My favorite part of your channel is watching the mistakes and the willingness to learn what you don't know. That's helped me when I've made minor mistakes during my dividend growth journey. I hope you continue to keep it real. I have great respect for the work you've put into your business. You're still very relatable. This is a fitting video! Happy new year!

Hi Joseph! Thanks for the analysis on $SPGI. While I understand the moat aspect, a lot of the negatives you pointed out about $SPGI sound like the exact reasons you stated as to why you sold T Rowe Price.

Joseph, really loving qualtrim so far and the content. For qualtrim, have you considered adding a total shareholder return metric (dividends+buybacks-SBC) directly from the financial statements?
Also have been thinking of ROCE recently in context of CapEx and R&D, trying to find companies that can consistently generate high ROCE while adding a substantial $ amount of assets on BS without diluting ROCE. This indicates that management can consistently find good opportunities to invest shareholder capital at high marginal rates of return.
Thinking about what % of market cap a company capitalizes each year in relation to the ROCE (I think ADBE is a good example, with consistently high ROCE of 30% and investing about 2% of market cap in R&D last year).

While you give a good explanation for why you're investing in a particular new stock which I enjoy listening to, I feel you often skip over why you went for the stock you invested in as opposed to one of their competitors.

Interesting buy. It gave me an idea. I looked into ASX on the ASX. Basically they have the monopoly on securities sold for Australia and New Zealand. I checked it out a while ago but it was very pricey. They've come down a lot and looking like a decent buy at today's price. I took out a small position.
They have a decent dividend and it's 100% franking credits too. In Australia dividend income has already been taxed so when you add it to your tax return you can get the taxes paid on it returned to you. Unlike US where you pay tax on dividends. Essentially double taxing profits of a business.
It's not a fantastic choice but it's fairly safe one.

I’ll be putting $15k into 401k, $6.5k into Roth, $7k into HSA (married with a kid), and then $30-50k is either going into a fixer upper for property number three or is going to rotate between wheeling QQQ and earning interest on robinhood (4% APY currently). My 401k is into Russell 1000 (no regular SP500 option…), my Roth is probably gonna mostly go into QQQ, and my HSA is gonna go mostly into SCHD and potentially wheeling Dutch Bros stock. I’d love to hear anyone’s thoughts!
