    Wrestling augments BJJ so well and BJJ augments wrestling like nobody's business. I did BJJ growing up tried out for my college wrestling team, I got to compete because we we had less guys at my weight class then all the others haha, I did get smashed my first couple matches, but after let go of pride and work out the kinks of BJJ to wrestling I am not kidding leg locks from BJJ without finishing them, 50/50 guard, and omoplata to a funk roll is so much fun and effective literally nobody knows what you are doing, you almost feel like you are cheating after because wrestling is so structured and traditional -no more new moves that nobody sees this stuff coming! leg locks are money in wrestling! And it helped so much with my BJJ too. ( I had to stop because my classes are too hard to do a sport)

    Ive been doing jitz for 4+ years, and before that, I did wrestling for 4 years in high school before that, and I can tell you that Folkstyle wrestling truly is a gold mine for unexplored ground positions for BJJ. Catch-as-Catch-Can wrestling as well. I would recommend having a solid understanding of the turtle guard first though, seeing as the bottom position used in Folkstyle wrestling is the turtle guard, only instead of resting on your forearms and or forehead on the mat, you are resting your hands on the mat.

      yep I think turtle knowledge is vital if you want to use this

    I incorporated this into my jiu jitsu and eventhough i have a somewhat good guard, when people pass it i do this move and with little effort i end up on top. Thank you for sharing this, ps i have been pulling this move since 2015, a lot of trial and error but now im able to hit it effortlessly.

    I have adapted Eduardo Telles game quite alot to help protect my injured knee 6 years ago. Turtle helped me understand quite alot of the wrestling concepts like the Granby roll. This is right up my alley.But to be confident in these sorts of positions your awareness ness to be at a fairly decent level. I can't wait to start working with this, especially that one Askren uses. It's an angle I have never considered.
    Cheers Scout

    Interesting technique, people need to stop getting so wrapped up in the name of the sport a technique is associated with. Take what fits into your game and use it. Dont worry about whether people say it is BJJ, Judo, Sambo, Wrestling, Submission Wrestling, Catch as Catch Can or whatever else. In the end it is grappling.

    Gr8 vid. It completes a cycle i started four or five years ago as a blue belt. It would emulate Xandes reverse roll to modified funk but if you didn't execute it 100% a guy can take your back ie. if he's stooped lower vs standing breaking your guard. I failed using it in competition and never tried it again. But this vid has reinvigorated me. I try chumorrow.

  • @CrimsonCuda
    @CrimsonCuda 10 років тому

    Funny, I've done this several times to avoid the stack pass on failed triangles, arm bars, and guard sweeps. I didn't even realize I was doing it, I was just thrilled I wasn't stuck in somebody's side control afterwards - but I did feel like I was in a vulnerable position. From my experience, it's a lot easier when you have a deep underhook on that leg, it makes the transition through the legs a lot smoother when you're already under their hips making it hard for them to sprawl. Thanks for sharing this; I'll definitely be looking for more "funk rolling" opportunities from now on.

    I appreciate your enthusiasm! The video was done well!
    Though it seems to be a risky transition against an agile grappler.
    Prior to viewing this breakdown I knew the Funk Roll was at risk to be countered by a Braulio Estima style of upside down triangle and, as mentioned before, the Crucifix.
    After taking a closer look. A traditional triangle was a clear option in one of Xande's demonstrations from standing and watching Mighty Mouse vs JoeJitsu there is solid opening to attack an arm triangle (Brabo/D'Arce or the Japanese Neck Tie)
    I hate to be the guy who gets shown a technique and only thinks about countering it. But when considering adapting a technique to fit my game, as I did with the funk roll, I need to be aware of the risks, and how high those risks are. Personally, the risks seem to be too high.
    Good luck to all of you high rollers in your funk rolling futures!

    • @BJJSCOUT
      @BJJSCOUT  10 років тому

      hey yes crucifix is one of the biggest risks here (see the outro of this video) but I think some things can be done to this pure wrestling move to adapt it for BJJ...it's just an idea though, it's up to the community to explore this position!

  • @WhisperingDeath

    Wrestling is a great feeding ground for new BJJ techniques. Marcelo Garcia dominated for a decade by adapting Russian tie (2-on-1) control, arm drags, and high-single leg takedowns off his x-guard into his jiu jitsu.

    The reverse single doesn't kill the cradle attempt altogether, its not getting broken in your position and building a base thru the transition that keeps you safe. If you rest or give in to the cross-face you will get cradled and end up with your arms stuck between their legs and unable to defend yourself. Other than that good analysis

    • @BJJSCOUT
      @BJJSCOUT  7 років тому +4

      +kerpal321 hi so to stop that, u need to use something called a double knee slide as you tripod up on your head (so u don't always have to use the free hand to base up) using the other hand to control the leg trying to reverse triangle
      ua-cam.com/video/ZhJ93OJQu_c/v-deo.html this is what a double knee slide is

    • @zeaferjones1404
      @zeaferjones1404 5 років тому

      @@albertoliverserna The funk roll is different then the Pederson roll(reverse grip on the leg). With the funk roll you roll all the way through while the Pederson is more of a sit out. Ben Askren is an one of the best wrestlers of all time and might be the best scrambler of all time so he chains many moves together.

    Funny you should post this. My base is wrestling and I coach it and I love bjj. A year or two ago I started to philosophize that it was actually wrestlers how started to dabble in bjj who began the funk. Recently Ive begun to notice the prevalence of how wrestling is utilizing the kimura to defend the head inside single. The two will meld as wrestling begins to see the benifits of bjj and bjj becomes willing to cross train in wrestling. But you should know this, in the wrestling community some belive that funk becomes possible from sloppy weak positioned shots. Meaning that good technique defeats the funk. What do you think about that idea and bjj? Great vid!

    • @BJJSCOUT
      @BJJSCOUT  10 років тому +2

      Yes I think funk is not that popular in wrestling because of the back exposure risked (ie out of folkstyle, it's even more risky). I think someone with fundamental technique would be very hard to funk against but then Asken was not just a good funk wrestler, he also has a good double and many had to tone down their aggressiveness (and get shot on instead) because of his funking so it has its uses...in BJJ with no back exposure issue (and also its 2 points if you reverse a takedown) this move is an additional possibility that can catch people off guard, especially if they get the single but can't get a finish. As far as the origins of funk, I don't know if it was from BJJ's influence really,maybe the cradle stuff (from the single)

    • @kallepikku4991
      @kallepikku4991 7 років тому

      Wrestlers have been using Double wrist lock to defend against head inside single leg since ever wrestling was invented. The problem is that Double wrist lock was made illegal in 1930s, so applying it further than a certain angle gets you disqualified. That's why it has lost it's popularity in American amateur wrestling (although Iranians and Russians still use it somewhat). Check Mark Schultz vs Turks in 1984 Olympics and you'll see what I mean.

    Wrestling is FAR and AWAY the best base in MMA. Its a straight up fact. DC holds two titles, GSP probably the GOAT was a wrestler first, Khabib the most dominate fighter in the history is a wrestler (beat the dog ish out of conor mcTapper) Askren is undefeated. TJ Dillashaw. Henry Cejudo. All wrestlers and title holders. Where is your Damian Maia? Your only hope currently is Jacare.

      Wrestling and striking just works when you know how to defend submissions. And subs defense are the first thing that you learn in jiu-jitsu. So the base for mma it'a the base of jiu-jitsu: knowing how to not tap.

      @kaiceecrane3884 7 років тому

      I do a simular game plan from bottom half. Never use the knee shield till the last moment I can to make sure don't get leg locked. I look to see how close either foot is, if I can reach it I ankle pick to escape. If I can't I look to arm drag the far arm and attack a kneebar and use it to get on top, if the kneebar if poor funk roll works well for me. If I can't arm drag the far arm I do the near arm to get a kimura and I use the reaction of you to take your back, if you don't react I just finish to kimura. If for what ever reason I can't take your back I bail to attack the leg and either funk roll, ankle pick, or use the toe hold to get on top
