    One thing about Askren is how relaxed he is when he is grappling on top, he doesn't force a lot of positions nor does he tense his body up while scrambling. Tensing up and muscling positions is why he's opponents get so gassed out while he is relatively fresh. Also Askren just has some out of this world grappling reflexes and intuition, from years of wrestling competition.

    Joe Rogan's got so much power now, he invites someone, the guy tells his story and boom everyone wants him in the UFC. Best move Askren ever did to get on the show. By the way we really see how much MMA fans have evolved now, to be excited to see two wrestlers against each other. Love it.

    When I was a wrestler, a cross wrist would usually be considered more advantageous/dominant than an inside wrist. With an inside wrist, you have to "suck it in" or "roll it in" in order to keep the other guy from posting that arm. With the cross wrist, by it's very nature, (with their hand at their belly or even pulled across their body) the post is already taken out. Also, an opponent can often fight off or break inside wrist control just using that same arm, whereas breaking cross wrist almost always requires two hands. Finally, cross wrist naturally provides a level of waist/hip control.
    From an mma perspective, having a cross wrist means that the near side of the opponent's head is exposed, which makes it harder for them to protect against hard strikes (as opposed to near wrist, where the opposite side is what's exposed, which means they have a bit more protection).
    So, it might not be a matter of Askren preferring inside wrist control so much as it's easier/more common to obtain. And in the process of his opponent fighting off the inside wrist, Askren can chain his wrestling to get the cross wrist, arguably an even better position.

    Askren has alot to teach us all. He has single handedly rewritten the manual on controlling and striking from the top position. The old mount to punch and then to choke hardly ever works against today's fighters. And, he proves that Jiu Jitsu strategy is almost completely dead. The guard is too risky, the mount isn't strong enough and leads to getting reversed. The rear choke is too easy to defend. None of the techniques from Jiu Jitsu are effective anymore. It's a new world where wrestling is King. Long live the current kings of MMA- Wrestlers.

    • @AxisKisu
      @AxisKisu 7 років тому +11

      Mark Tennenhouse jiujitsu is super effective still. people just have more understanding of defense now, but that doesn't stop guys from getting submissions on almost every fight card.

      I believe there is a place for BJJ and it is effective in some situations but you're right. Askren and Nurmagomedov are so effective at using these techniques and progressions that are unconventional to MMA grappling yet really conventional to them. Their dominance with this style of grappling is more effective than any one BJJ practitioner in UFC except maybe Ortega but hes a steroid cheat so I don't pay him mind.

    Thanks for the videos. By the way, when I've tried the wrist control in the top position in training, the bottom guy usually traps my arm under his and rolls me off (like an outer wind) and onto my back. What's stopping Ben Askren's opponents from doing the same thing?

    • @davidtaylor6204

    • @vanillacrem3
      @vanillacrem3 7 років тому

      Your positioning is also very important. You can't allow your opponent to suck your arm in too deep, and you need to use your Iowa ride to avoid getting pulled too far to the side or loaded up across your opponent's back as you both fight for control. One trick to try is to get both the inside wrist and the cross wrist simultaneously, allowing you to safely adjust your weight distribution and/or break them down with forward pressure, before you let go with one hand to attack.

    • @BJJSCOUT
      @BJJSCOUT  7 років тому +10

      +David Taylor hi that's called a Peterson roll, you can UA-cam some counters, you can also try look up tripod wrestling counters (which involve granby rolls) to see how to move to match their movement, once you understand the escape path you will know how to match it

  • @alexsayhi
    @alexsayhi 5 років тому

    They both have the ability to take each other down and keep him there and win rounds that way. The question is who tries first and how much would the stand up play a factor. I think Khabib's got the better takedowns. Askren's entries are very sloppy and susceptible to counters. But in that particular matchup i don't think it matters. Once on top of you they are both experts at suffocating you. Both undefeated. Wow.

    @coleeppstein1279 7 років тому

    While I like your BJJ studies, I feel like most of these MMA studies are hardly ground breaking and you often identify an interesting part of the metagame but don't provide its proper context. One could make the argument here that Askrens use of basic folk style tactics are more of a stall technique since the damage he gets in is so minor. Since most MMA guys aren't comfortable with Granbying to recompose the guard and building up from there, these tactics can work in that context but you're not doing that much damage, moreso hurting their gas tank if they keep trying to explode up to their knees. There's a reason most mma guys prefer to set the hooks and use the body triangle to strike and work chokes and it's not because they're not Woke to Askrens sick new tech but rather they prefer to try to end the fight while Askren prefers playing it a little safer to win rounds and tire out opponents.

    • @BJJSCOUT
      @BJJSCOUT  7 років тому +2

      +Cole Eppstein hi hopefully part 3 answers some of these points. Imo askren is doing something ive seen no one else do but then I don't think I watch as much mma as most. As for doing ground breaking mma studies, actually I have a lot of other stuff not on UA-cam. If you Google around , those too probably aren't really going to do it for you, but I promise I haven't stopped trying...

    • @coleeppstein1279
      @coleeppstein1279 7 років тому +1

      BJJSCOUT I eagerly await part 3 and commend you for the thought provoking work you do. Respectfully, I just think there's a flip-side to some of your arguments and you do sometimes point them out like in your Rousey work. For example, you heaped a lot of well deserved praise on Cruz and did an Amazing job with his patterns but didn't real point out his style's obvious flaw in that he was doing no real damage with his strikes like his backwards-jumping stiff-arm overhand counters. As soon as Garbrant landed a weighted shot, Cruz suddenly felt behind and his style fell apart. Sorry if that was too tangential to the Askren convo. As far as folk style rides in MMA, I feel it has been done before. Phil Davis does it often. I can remember as far back as CB Dollaway vs Mayhem Miller when CB kept Mayhem in the turtle with ankle control for 2 rounds straight and Mayhem had no answer as a BJJ guy. Might be worth checking out. Sorry for this novel and keep up the good work!!!
