- This song was made two weeks prior to the Season 3, Episode 1 airdate. I wrote this song to show the expectations for him.
As you might already know, this is my King Sombra's Theme.
"Sombra" is the Spanish, Portuguese, and Galician word for "shadow", which suggests that he has something to with shadows. He's responsible for the disappearance of the Crystal Empire, among other things. Memories and mentioning his name brings pain. Id est aeternum malum. (For this is eternal evil).
The song also touches upon the Crystal Empire itself, and it's own epicness. It's a whole new land, outside Equestria, and it has the potential to have grand scenes of crystal outcrops on grassy fields, a scent of spring air filling the lungs, and crystal ponies with manes that bedazzle most non-crystal ponies.
In other words, Season 3 is at hand. Are you prepared for November 10th when it all goes down?

He's a looming evil shadow watching over you spreading fear to your heart. On a side note, he is actually the first villain that wasn't cocky. If Discord did something like this he would probably be sitting on a couch waiting for the shield to weaken. Sombra waited while he used his spells and magic to keep Twilight away from the Crystal Heart. Discord and Chrysalis were over the top and charisma villains while Sombra was intimidation and actually Pure Evil. PLEASE watch the episode one more time and look at Sombra again and this time think of him as another villain line, not in the same line Discord and Chrysalis fall under. I guess by hiding the Crystal Heart in the place where every crystal pony feared to roam the most, put that in a cursed door, on top of a cursed staircase, followed by another trap, he is still more evil than most say. I see him like a Moby-Dick: Everypony talks about him, but we really don't see his true form until the end. The more I look at this guy, the more I start to like him. . .

Don't forget rather clever way of hiding the Crystal Heart and equally clever traps making use of what anyone searching for it would expect from him as a bad guy. No one really sane would expect a friggin' villain to make traps and locks REQUIRING light, good magic to disarm and operate. It really shows that Sombra was a smart guy with immense magical knowledge, not restricted to dark magic.
No monologues. No banter. No mercy.
A villain who dispenses with the pleasantries and goes straight for the win is a rarity, especially in a show primarily aimed toward kids, and it's one I still appreciate.
His true goal will never be known that's what makes him so brilliantly terrifying he's so cold and calculative the true anti-thesis to harmony.

I really liked Sombra the way he's depicted. Granted, he really didn't make any errors as a villain, unlike Discord or Chrysalis who were too caught up in their success. Had Shining Armor not thrown his wife off the balcony (which was the funniest scene in the premiere), Sombra would've gotten the Crystal Heart and the crystal ponies would've lost all hope. He's a freaking boss and deserves to be better recognized than how most of the fandom perceives him.
I still considered sombra a extremely tragic villain in the tv show cartoon no matter what, there's still sadness, fear, anger, and hate in sombra's heart

I disagree with you. In my opinnion sombra is not tragic. Sombra should not have a tragic story, because in mlp we have too many tragic villains and there would be no message „ not everypony is good ”. besides, the series shows, that Sombra likes to torture others mental. creating a tragic story for him would be a mistake. ( I remind everyone that only my opinion and you may disagree with me ) King Sombra is pure evil, which makes his a very unique and interesting character in the show.
He did have somewhat of a tragic backstory in the comics
What I love about this song is how it expands upon what the show hinted about Sombra's character before his banishment. It's dark and brooding, yet also captures a majestic, sophisticated feeling and unfettered ambition. Sombra wasn't evil just for the sake of being evil; He was on his way to becoming a god of Lovecraftian proportions before Celestia and Luna put a stop to it. And he came /very/ close to victory the second time, to the point he only had to catch up to Spike before Cadance did...
Sombre is actually my favorite of the villains so far. I think he is way underestimated. Considering the market the show is aiming for, theres so much implied suffering at his hands that when you think what actually lies there if one were to flesh it out for an adult audience, is much more malicious than Discord or Chrysalis.

This is actually my favorite King Sombra theme of all that I have heard. It feels like it fits him perfectly.
Sombra could have been so much better. It's kinda sad actually, because he had so much potential for an amazing backstory. Too bad he had to go so soon.
I believe the comics did that. There was a whole thing where he met Celestia and everything.

@@iwantsleep8079 Not sure, I never got around to buying any of the comics. All I know is it involves a mirror where Celestia, Luna, and Star Swirl find an alternate universe. Sombra is a good Prince and Celestia falls in love.
Beyond that I really don't know what happens. I think the comics were limited in number and idk where to get them if they arent.

His lack of screen time was actually one of the things I loved about him. He reminded me a bit of Lord Sauron. Defeated and disembodied long ago, he only needs to reclaim a single item to fully return. So painful was his rule that meer memory of him causes recoil. Finally, unlike the previous, hammy villains; Sombra almost never speaks. Growls, chuckles, and some whispered taunts are all we get. In this way, he feels more like a force of evil than a mere mortal.
If I had watched this when I was 5, I would most likely have found Sombra to be quite terrifying. And even now I can safely say that he's still by far the most menacing villain in MLP. Then again, it's a kid show, so none are really scary. By far the best design tough.
This is a great theme for a great villain. He's actually my favorite villain because of what he is. He's from a classic line of villain. A pure embodiment of evil. Its like he has a reason for evil, He is Evil. Despite only quick glances of the past, his actions have scarred an entire empire and even the Princess feared his return. We don't even know what his return would mean other than doom and evil and that's all we need to know. A very interesting character because he's capable of anything.

This is awesome, and I still don't get the negative reaction to Sombra. I like him a lot, and this is coming from a guy who loves his villains to be raised on giant cow ranches and coated in their cheese.
This is an awesome masterpiece. I'm slowly realizing Sombra's true meaning, and this helped me a lot. Your theme has a special castlevania-esque aura that gives it a calml, regal mark of evilness.
I think the reason that Hasbro really didn't show Sombra much is because maybe they wanted to give the viewers a chance to imagine what he was like but I do agree that he really would've been a very interesting villain.
I don't want another Chrysalis, Discord or Nightmare Moon. King Sombra was a better villain than they were.
It's sad that they wasted him
For all the memes over the years about crystals, stairs, and suddenly being a flamboyant chatterbox on his return, King Sombra really was one of if not the single most competent villain in the show. He practically won in his debut simply by waiting and having planned for someone to think to use his own magic against him, being literal moments away from complete victory even with Spike saving Twilight. On his return he not only takes over the Crystal Empire almost instantly, but plans to lose so that he can eliminate the Elements as a threat and take over Canterlot instead, only losing because the entirety of borderline-omnipotent Discord picked a side. He is one bad horse, and the only thing holding him back was his scale of power being below "embodiment of chaos."

This is just spectacular, I've found this in my Civilization 5 mod folder and it led me up here. Really lovely, it's just exactly what I thought Sombra's theme should sound like - so dark, so deep, so powerful.
Its been confirmed that he's dead, but they need to do something with him. He should've had a two part episode so he could've been the villain he was supposed to be.

To all of you who are wondering, Sombra's Horn survived the blast. It was purely intact, we all saw what he did with just a fragment of his horn. Sombra's trading card, from Hasbro and Enter-Play, says this same thing, and that he might return. And don't forget it took Terik a while to return to some strength before he made his move. Who's to say Sombra won't return, and this time with a little more preparation.
Well you never know. It was either Megan McCarthy or Lauren Faust who said that he was officially dead but maybe they will change their minds.
Even if HE is dead, some of his power could linger in the horn... and you know what they say about power corrupting.

This reminds me of Metroid. Sick job! Always thought they could've done a lot more with Sombra although the little that they showed him do made him seem alot more menacing than all the other villains combined. Still Chrysalis remains my favorite villain and character overall in the show. Again, badass music.
I still have faith in his return. Discord went missing for long until his return in Keep Calm and Flutter On.
For those who say that Sombra's appearance was too short, don't forget that the show should be still appropriate for the younger audience. Sombra's prolonged presence may turn out a little too shadowy for the young ones. With him present, probably the whole of Equestria would live in fear... This ain't no good for colts and fillies... Slavery, tyranny...
I don't know. Discord had the possibility of being brought back because he was just turned to stone. That can be reversed. Queen Chrysalis is also a possibility because she was just sent launching far away in the Season 2 Finale. But King Sombra shattered into crystal. The likelihood of him coming back just doesn't seem all that possible.

Justin M. This is a guy who can turn himself into a giant evil smoke monster of death. I'm pretty sure he's going to make a comeback eventually. Maybe even in season 5. Personally, I'd like to see him return, if only so we can learn more about him as a character.

I found Sombra's episode very dark for a kids show. Probably my favourite villain so far
I hope they do something with him. One of my favorites, if they gave a little more character to him he would be terrifying. A unicorn who can make your darkest fears come true. Imagine the visions discord gave the 6, now amp them up 100x.
This was in a brony mod for King Sombra's crystal empire for Civ 5. It *made* that mod. :D
I like King Sombra because of how menacing and threatening he was. I hope they do more with him, like make him a recurring villain, or the main villain of the season.

If Sombra is to return in the future this song has to be playing, maybe as he slowly marches forwards towards Canterlot with an army of black crystal minions, no sound of their footsteps or the ensuring battle, just this theme

This song actually made me think about a pattern that has arisen. Ever since Twilight was made a "Princess", more and more villains/beasts have escaped Tartarus, Tirek is one, I feel like there will be more. All the while, Sombra is slowly rising into power while Ponykind is distracted, before eventually taking the Canterlot throne and wiping the Crystal Palace from the map.
EDIT: The fact that the Sirens somehow ended up in the real world, makes me believe that either Celestia thought they couldn't harm anyone there, or they were possibly sent there by Sombra.

If you go by the fact that there was an alternate version of Sombra in the comics who was a king (I think.) then yes. There would be a human version who wasn't tainted by dark magic... Maybe.

omg i havent seen this in a long time, i listened to this so long ago, i saw the picture and it just clicked.
Absolutely badass. I know alot of people aren't huge fans of Sombra's design (Likening him to a bad alicorn OC design, for example), but I really think he looks totally badass, as well as what little previews we have had of him, and I really realy really hope he lives up to this epicness and buildup!

This is so damn epic. It's perfect music for an area or Sombra himself, and it reminds me of the Metroid Prime series with it's ambiance and subtle power.
I might even say it's a very good boss battle theme if the battle was more of a one-on-one scenario like the final battle against Ganondorf in Twilight Princess.
although technically not a brony, my brother, who is, put this on and i immediately fell in love with it. this piece sent shivers down the core of my spine it was that chilling! but after hearing this i decided to watch the show. it wasn't bad, i've clearly seen worse, but i just don't understand wherein lies the show's hype? what makes it so popular? i guess i will never understand. but this piece is ethereally breathtaking, kind of reminds me of the Temple of Time in Zelda: Ocarina of Time! very well done and keep up the good work!
MLP, in my opinion, garners so much attention because there's so many references to things that most grown-ups saw when they were kids. Pinky Pie's pulled so many gags from looney toons that it's just a blast from the past. Not only that, but the large portion of the fandom that I've met aren't big on drama. Everyone respects different ideas for the most part.
So many comments discussing the character and not the wonderful music here. It brings to my mind visions of a kingdom, great and terrible, lying in ruins. Ancient buildings crumble and decay for hundreds of years, but the old stones know that one day their dark master will return.

Meghan's writing was already top notch in season 2 and 3. Also, Sombra is a better villain than Ganondorf.
Sombra in Season 9 was just as wasted potential as his other showings.
I would love to see more on him - the main reason I don't care much for him as a villain, compared to Discord or Nightmare Moon, is because I feel like there was almost no on-screen characterization for him - we didn't see much of him in person. I noticed, when re-watching the first three seasons, that each villain seemed to get less and less backstory, from Nightmare Moon to Discord to Chrysalis until Sombra got bottom barrel in that he didn't get a whole bunch of activity when his turn came. Yeah, we got to see what he did, and a little bit of why, but not nearly enough to understand his motivations outside of the hunger for power, or any other motivations for that matter. In fact, I'm not sure we even learned why exactly the Crystal Empire showed up when it did (if we did, be gentle on me, it's been a bit since I've seen that specific episode set) and I dunno, maybe more on that's shown up in Season Four, but I haven't had the chance to watch it yet, really. :/
That aside, you did an amazing job with this music! I love your style!
I can whole heartedly agree to that. We got next to nothing more than "he wanted power because of reasons you don't need to know" with Sombra. Being one who LOVES over thinking things with a show, I'd like to think a villain is doing something for a reason important to them. Like Chrysalis being Queen of Changelings has to make sure that her subjects/minions/people are fed so... invading out of necessity.
Fan theories are really the only thing we could have to work with to flesh out Sombra and Chrysalis, a bit here, piece there, until we can come out with a good backstory on the character.
I just rewatched those episodes, analyzing Sombra's role, and yeah - I mean, I guess he's supposed to be a symbol of those who are power-hungry and whatnot, but we never get to hear HOW he got power-hungry, or why. Many people like that tend to have a reason, even a vague, flimsy one. Did he grow up in poverty and decided he was against being stuck in that anymore? Was he born into royalty, and was bred to believe he was the only important figure? Did something external corrupt or possess him, even before he went full-on evil? Was he picked on as a colt and wanted to show the world how powerful he could be? What??? I kind of hope we get to see him, even just like in a flashback sequence, so we can find out more about him.
And the worst part is we will never know because the crystal heart turned him into dust

Beautiful and fit for the King of the Crystals, for his might will last in the memories of the past, for the Crystal ponies will never forget, his terrible rein over the land. For one day he will return and we will wait patiently till he does.

What I envision while listening to this song:
A fanatical tyrant has destroyed a prosperous, well established empire. He then raised it back from the dead as an empire built on hatred and fear, were the citizens are enslaved and servants to his will. He looks to the other nations of Equestria, and thinks two words. "All Mine". These two words have dire consequences for the rest of the world. Can the other nations band together to fight off the King of Shadow's all powerful army? Or will the world forever been stamped under the boot of the Tyrant of the Frozen North?
According to Sombra's timeline... NOPE!!!
Look at the cutie map and you will see he has taken over more than half of Equestria... Celestia is losing the war against him in that timeline.

I agree with you on Sombra being a legit villain. Sure, the others had way more screen time, but they were spending all that screentime actively ensuring their victory, and each villain before Sombra almost won. But Sombra didn't NEED that screentime, did he? He had thought it all through a thousand years ago; all he had to do was bide his time and strike when the shield was down. Patient, intelligent, and scarily competent -- King Sombra is far from a poor villain. He was prepared for this.

I like Sombra, the art of him shows he could have been something much greater like one of the greatest foes to be in MLP history. I can image him giving out a speech to show how powerful and evil he is.

DAMN, this has got to be the most gothic, badass music theme for any character in MLP: FiM. Play this theme for anyone who is unfamiliar with MLP: FiM, and when they find out where the theme came from, they will be shocked with disbelief.

For the song, I really enjoyed this! It captures the quiet and dark patience of my own imaginings for the character. Inspiration for a fanfic!
I really never understood the trashing of this character. He's such a atmospheric and dark villain. If I were a kid and this episode premiered, I would have been inspired tremendously by this villain! Someone described it this way once, and I really have to agree, it's almost like Sauron or something - a looming, ever-present evil that's building.
There are some interesting fanfics out there about him, some are really worth a read, I think I might write one myself late this year, he really did deserve much more showtime.
King Sombra was totally horrifying. That face in the cloud was epic!
I agree, though, that we would see it better if it were age-scaled. I would have loved to have seen a little more footage of Celestia and Luna battling him with their magic.
He did almost nothing because he didn't need to do anything in the season premiere. He had already left a legacy of terror preventing the crystal ponies from feeling joy and hid the crystal heart behind traps, spells and illusions so that no one could find it. All he had to do was bide his time until the forcefeild drops then sweep in and take over with practically no opposition.
This song makes watching Equestria Daily's season 3 countdown 20% more epic.

I've given this Luna thing some thought: Celestia controls the Sun, we all know that, and Luna controls the Moon, just a satellite. However, Nightmare Moon wanted to bring about eternal night, and you can't do that with the Moon alone, even if you do a solar eclipse dead-center. Therefore NM can probably control the entire solar system. So Nightmare Moon is an way for Luna to upgrade her powers at the price of her identity. All that was stopping her were either The Elements or her own willpower.

This track seems liek something you'd see in 'Beyond Good and Evil.'
Dude... Sombra gave me chills, why? He reminded me of SAURON from Lord of the Rings as he was through the films! As in; he had intense presence, though not many lines, and was enough to cause terror and suffering at the mention of his name. His reign was so terrible that NO one could remember, they REFUSED to remember. Sombra's evil could not truly be shown, because keep in mind, MLP:FiM IS just a kid's show.

To me as a huge fan of sombra I see him as the Dracula of the pony world since he clearly shows most traits of the vampire king and his abilities with both darkness and crystals:) who agrees?
