I love Pridgen's take on this song and his playing in general, but the way Jon Theodore played Cygnus live and on the recording transcends everything. It was beautiful.
You have GOT to give props to Juan, he keeps that whole jam together (with Thomas). It is hard stuff, to keep a straight beat in a strange time signature with crazy insane improvisational rhythms flying all your head. P.S. This band is brilliant.
Something just occured to me. As I'm progressing in my late 20's right now and have enjoyed listening but also playing music from a young age, I also tend to listen to alot of other music. Most of it right now is electronic music of all kinds. I'm starting to realise that TMV was the last of the band-formation music groups that truly blew me away. Every musician that has played with TMV is insane. I mean, just look at their drummers? Pridgen, Elitch, Theodore, come on man?! I have yet to find another band to come up and challenge the Mars Volta's legacy. Y'all have a great day.
I'm in the same boat. In the last several years, I've been drifting away from rock and moved towards Electronica and Hip-Hop (which saddens me sometimes...). Since I've been listening to the Mars Volta in 2005-2006, I too haven't found a modern band that I love more than TMV. However, the most frustrating aspect of the Mars Volta is that they did not live up to their potential. They had the talent to become Superstars in rock.
The guitar solo is mesmerising in both its passion and technicality. The interplay when Cedric controls the effects pedals is a stroke of creative genius!. What a chemistry!
This is one of my favourite songs by these guys ^^ I love watching em live, there's so much energy, look at Cedric go, dancing about like a madhead! And still singing awesomely. You gotta love em :D I wanna see them live for real next time they do a gig here ^^
***** Last I checked I was the only one being called any names. I haven't said anything like that. Quit tryin to start bullshit drama on a fucking youtube video
This band is so bad ass live GO C THEM!People either love or hate this band...the first time i heard de-loused i sat through the whole thing without speaking it just blew me away! But alot of my friends just cant get them.
I think it's really easy to discount singers, but Cedric is just as creative and as much of a genius as the rest. I don't know of more than just a couple singers in the past century who could write and sing vocal lines as great as his. Especially in the midst of all those time changes he makes the music seem so natural and fantastic. Until recently I definitely under-appreciated his contributions to the band. Long live TMV
this performance is the bomb. cedric is so on. pridgens drums are awesome. he takes a wicked jon theodore part, and makes it his own, and for this song it works. as usual omar juan and ikey provide a perfect anchor for everything.
This is the epitome of modern music right here. To think so far outside the box, then have it come back down and rape people's ears with such intense groove and musical bliss, is a feat that will be hard to recreate for generations to come. The Led Zeppelin of our time.
This was last year, after hearing a lot of At The Drive In, I choose this video to introduce me in the world of Mars Volta, I can't say how much I love them and how much this performance is still the best I've heard ! I wish I could see them for their future record
Holy Jesus mother fucking goddamn Christ, this has to be one of the best ensembles of artists of all time!!! That 9/16, 5/4 jam is fucking crazy; this shit is like crystal meth injected right into my brain. Can't wait 'til they tour again.
Before i really got into TMV I listened to a lot of live led zeppelin and man Omar get's so jimmy page sometimes i love it. The live stuff especially sounds like live page from '73-'75.
Orgullosamente latinos ! por personajes como ellos me siento orgulloso de ser latino y ser mexicano ! no le piden nada a nadie , son perfectos mi banda favorita de siempre !
I was watching an interview of the big day out to omar, and is so funny to se how sometimes he can look so innocent and when he´s playing so fiercefull
how they keep that 29/16 beat while Omar solos is stunning. This performance blows me away man
I love Pridgen's take on this song and his playing in general, but the way Jon Theodore played Cygnus live and on the recording transcends everything. It was beautiful.

Lemme be honest, Omar is an insanely talented and underrated guitarist, and easily one of the best of our timetime.
He is very underrated in my opinion, specially because of his style. He manages to combine virtuosism with disorder in a very unique way.
Exactly. One of the greats of all time 🔥
that drummer is hands down the most crazy and on-point live performance ive ever heard
Something just occured to me. As I'm progressing in my late 20's right now and have enjoyed listening but also playing music from a young age, I also tend to listen to alot of other music. so fucking true

Yes Pridgen tends to overplay, but frankly he does an awesome job on this one, Im not at all overwhelmed by him instead Im loving his version of this.
Omar is futuristic Jimmy Page gone super sayian lvl 5
This is definitely one of the most talented bands ever assembled. Top 10 I'd say.
The guitar solo is mesmerising in both its passion and technicality. The interplay when Cedric controls the effects pedals is a stroke of creative genius!. What a chemistry!
God I love that drum fill at 2.23. Quite simple, but just fits so well.
This is one of my favourite songs by these guys ^^ I love watching em live, there's so much energy, look at Cedric go, dancing about like a madhead! And still singing awesomely. You gotta love em :D I wanna see them live for real next time they do a gig here ^^
This is Jazz;Incredible energy!!! reminds me of early Mahavishnu Orchestra and Santana on roids!!!
Mark 05:51-06:08. Cathartic Moments of Pure Emotion of Creativity Caught on Film...Expression of the Self is True FREEDOM. Beautiful.
5:40 for some reason I really love this part. Omar playing to Cedric's control of the pedal board.
This version got me into The Mars Volta, damnit. Brilliant.
Cedric + Omar : The most incredible thing you could heard after Frank Zappa
Everyone in the world needs to hear this.
Thats one helluva breakdown in Cygnus. Ive always loved how they just jam out/improvise for 10 minutes in the middle of there songs
RIP TMV. what beautiful music they made
Thomas's snare displacement in the 9/16 6/4 2/4 bit is such a headfuck but so so good.
_29/16 is brilliant and hard as fuck_
because fuck that 4/4 shit
***** Shut the hell up and listen to the jams. Christ...
***** Because I don't overanalyze music and would rather enjoy it the way it was intended? Yeah, I'm a complete dipshit alright.
***** Last I checked I was the only one being called any names. I haven't said anything like that. Quit tryin to start bullshit drama on a fucking youtube video
Can you explain how you would count 29/16?
I can't believe this is Live, it sounds so perfect!
One of the better live acts out there today!
This band is so bad ass live GO C THEM!People either love or hate this band...the first time i heard de-loused i sat through the whole thing without speaking it just blew me away! But alot of my friends just cant get them.
LOL Cedric is such a diva on stage. It's awesome
Every time I watch this I get more keen to see them live :D
thanks to them music in this generation is still good
I think it's really easy to discount singers, but Cedric is just as creative and as much of a genius as the rest. I don't know of more than just a couple singers in the past century who could write and sing vocal lines as great as his. Especially in the midst of all those time changes he makes the music seem so natural and fantastic. Until recently I definitely under-appreciated his contributions to the band. Long live TMV
When I saw him live he was playing so good, but this was even better, like Hendrix and "Machine Gun"
They're one of the only bands that make me dance around my house like a lunatic.
I MUST see them live!!!!
THIS IS AMAZZING!!!
this performance is the bomb.
cedric is so on.
pridgens drums are awesome. he takes a wicked jon theodore part, and makes it his own, and for this song it works.
as usual omar juan and ikey provide a perfect anchor for everything.
i just have to turn up the volume like every minute with this vid!!! damn this is epic!!!!!
Omg cedric working the pedalboard while omar rocks out like a madman in the background. That was lifechanging.
someting incredible... I wish I was there... this is real something unusual, new and really great...
02:20 Omar to Pridgen: "YEAAAAHHHHH"... Pridgen is fucking crazy
This is the epitome of modern music right here. To think so far outside the box, then have it come back down and rape people's ears with such intense groove and musical bliss, is a feat that will be hard to recreate for generations to come.
The Led Zeppelin of our time.
Watching this is just bliss.
Everything about it.
Absolutely EVERYTHING.
i am so glad i had the chance to see this band 4 times and 2 times with all 8 legendary members through the bedlam tour!
that was freaking unbelievable. these guys are just monstrous!!!!
this really is another level of a buzz of live music
Cygnus will always be one of my very favorite TMV songs. The main riff is just...UGH. I love the way Cygnus flows and builds up.
This was last year, after hearing a lot of At The Drive In, I choose this video to introduce me in the world of Mars Volta, I can't say how much I love them and how much this performance is still the best I've heard !
I wish I could see them for their future record
Thanks. It's just came to me in a moment of clarity.... :)
I know right... You can tell by the way he plays and looks at his guitar it's his passion.
Its amazing!!!
the jam gives me chills.
Best live band I've ever seen. The improv is simply mindblowing.
i see this is with pridgen.
im impressed with the fact he can play a jon theodore song so well. aside from his pure technical perfection.
Best solo i've ever heard !
I can't wait for a full concert dvd!!
This guitar solo is outrageous
Easily one of the greatest songs ever made.
For anyone confused about the time signature past 4:20 - It's 9/16 followed by a bar of 5/4.
Sheer awesomenessss.......
I need to see them live!!
Thank you.
complexly beautiful, mozat loves this
amazing....
totally agree with you man...thomas has a lot to learn
Holy Jesus mother fucking goddamn Christ, this has to be one of the best ensembles of artists of all time!!! That 9/16, 5/4 jam is fucking crazy; this shit is like crystal meth injected right into my brain. Can't wait 'til they tour again.
This is amazing when your hit your head against the floor.
Wow! I'm speechless...
Masters!
i can not wait to watch this while stoned.
Got this with the Best Buy version of TBIG, and it alone was worth the price. I can't wait until they put out a live DVD.
This is the one of the only bands left that plays real music. Also, Pridgen is just unbelievable.
When i listen to Frances all the way through I feel at the end that I've just come off an ayahuasca trip.
Amazing sound on this video...
Before i really got into TMV I listened to a lot of live led zeppelin and man Omar get's so jimmy page sometimes i love it. The live stuff especially sounds like live page from '73-'75.
Now who can compete with a performance like this?!
Thomas takes this band to a whole different level of technicality and musicianship.
No mames, chingones entre los chingones, pinches voltas que buenos!
Orgullosamente latinos ! por personajes como ellos me siento orgulloso de ser latino y ser mexicano ! no le piden nada a nadie , son perfectos
mi banda favorita de siempre !
the wildest thing i've ever listened to
this is a pure epic video i can wait for bonnaroo everything about this is perfect
how could you possibly think that there is no spirit in this?
this is magical shit man!
Led Zeppelin + Rush + A healthy dose of spanish culture and a pinch of "DAAAAAAAAAYUM" = The Mars Volta
That is all.
de lujo!! ;)
totally agree with you man
jon was supposed to release that album with zack de la rocha but its no where to be found
I love the fact that you can actually hear the fuckin bass. awesome!

I bet this is what The Dillinger Escape Plan sounds like to people who dislike them.
great band...going to see them in düsseldorf
I was watching an interview of the big day out to omar, and is so funny to se how sometimes he can look so innocent and when he´s playing so fiercefull
Omar and Cedric can hold so much rock power in such tiny bodies... I know its in their hair!
Hahahaha! This video is fucking amazing! You know those two are brothers when you let your friend mess with your pedalboard on stage!

Best live performance .... for me)

I don't care what anyone says the Thomas years were the best years of this band.
