De las mejores presentaciones que hay de The Mars Volta en UA-cam, con mención especial para Juan Alderete, que infravalorado está, uno de los mejores bajistas de su generación.
This performance perfectly reflects the trajectory of this band. Just like this performance, they had their moments of absolute greatness mixed with moments of humanity, and yes, mistakes. In the beginning, they had not landed on their sound just yet. Experimenting, they searched for what would work for them, working with those who have been there before (De-Loused in the Comatorium), slowly and continually rising. Mistakes are made but at the expense of self-discovery. They start their peak, they reach genius/autistic musician levels with their ordered chaos jams (Frances the Mute/Amputechture). The rocket is taking off, and if you want to be a part of something epic, you better get on. "Salsa music on Acid" is going to be the next big thing. That rocket lifts off and they let that it carry them around the world as far as it can (Bedlam in Goliath). After which, they bring things down for a break and try the mellow thing for a while (Octahedron), only to build up momentum again for one last dying of breath. Line-ups and members change but the song remains the same. Their last reach misses 90% of their listening audience and then they kind of taper off and fade out (Noctourniquet). The 10% who got it beg for more and the resulting side projects only tickle their craving instead of satisfying it (Bosnian Rainbows). Sadly, those who stuck around don't realize they're leaving until they abruptly end. Those who jumped ship a while ago don't even realize that they're done and gone.
One of the best bass players alive... Juan Alderete de la Peña ! Follow his astonishing performances with the Omar Rodríguez-López Group, a pinnacle of taste and precision skills (coupled with the great Deantoni Parks, a drummer way better suited for this genre than Thomas Pridgen, a.k.a. "the annoying continuous chop-generator")
listen to pridgen try and describe his time signatures and tempo changes is hilarious. he doesn't even know what to call half the stuff he does, he just knows how to do it. also the strongest right foot i've ever heard, right up there alongside zach hill (hella, most notably)
Man, I remember when i first saw these guys when i was a teenager several years ago... it's nice to see they still got it going, their love for music has never died.
It's been 2 years... Figures.. I saw them Monday and it was the best I have ever seen them. Cedric's voice could not have been anymore on. I've watched a band from my home town become everything I have ever wanted in a band and win a Grammy. Keep practicing kid...
Never thought I could ever say this... but damn - drummer looks like he is effortlessly pulling off a NASA launch, while a gentle breeze blows through his hair. Top notch talent.
Anthony Pinkos my brother is a drummer, and showed me a video of his waaaay back. I had noooo idea he had joined these guys. So silly. This right here is a real supergroup.
yep and they black balled him in the end.. he was the messenger between the two during their falling out and o/c claimed he was giving each of them false information. trying to geta piece of the pie that he indeed helped bake, he brought them every drummer they ever had. and held that bass tone down
really nice version. Well played, Cedric. Juan was always the force of nature in this band, they had such virtuoso drummers especially with Pridgen the mr Alderate was just so important.
Thomas Pridgen is a beast! I sat six feet away at a drum clinic in Seattle, it was amazing to see someone of that caliber that close. Great musicians great band.
this is stunning, absolutely legendary in it's beauty. Music isnt supposed to be perfect, nothing is. These gentlemen did something special, not perfect, but special.
magorestes no para nada yo los vi en vivo en varias ocasiones y la gente siempre se quedaba así es que es difícil asimilar lo que uno está presenciando
amazing version, i miss so much this band, and the previously band at the drive in, de facto too. this group is so good that every thing they do is great.
Amazing, and the rain only added to the effect of the song. Now when I lisen to the song it will always remind me of rain. Which got me thinking...if it was raining fish guts and pig bones, I would still stand and watch a Mars Volta concert in enjoyment. Probably would stop me if cars were falling from the sky. I am deffinetly going to see them next week!
Are you talking about the drum work in the three first records? I´ve donde some investigation and it seems that Omar was the main composer of every instrument actually.
+Jonás Carrillo sure he's a great composer and he oversees their albums from concept to fruition but Jon Theodore is is one of the best drummers out there.
+Jonás Carrillo plus, I'm commenting on this live video, where Jon is obviously playing drums, not Omar. Are you sure Omar played all the instruments in the studio? Sounds incredibly time consuming and inefficient.
+JuiceBoxBiotch Oh I'm sorry I thought I was commenting on another video. Yeah Jon looks a bit more like Dane Cook than this guy, lol. But anyway yeah, I highly doubt you're listening to Omar on the albums they recorded before they fired Jon (which they later regretted, understandably).
Coolest thing about this video is how you can see Brann Drailor in the back at around 1:30. It looks like he is just jamming to how much of a beast Thomas Pridgen is.
Saludos
Of all the live mars volta videos I've seen on youtube. THIS one has to be on the top, for sound quality, video quality, and for just watching mars volta jamming on there like there's no tomorrow :D
no matter how open minded I am musically, or how much I like music out of the ordinary, and different from every mainstream band, every time I listen to these guys, I end up loathing them even more.
I saw these guys with the Chili Peppers back in 2006. They had an incredibly unique sound but they lacked as a live band. I've watched about 3 videos of this show and my God, they've improved. This sounds great and I'm happy to see they're conquering their sound on stage and not just in the studio.
The Mars Volta is what happens when a whole band overplays their parts, and i love it
One of the best live shows I’ve been too
Brann Dailor watching Thomas from the sidelines, lol!
Justin Gulbransen and Brent Hinds at 2:56!
Love the mastodon guys in the background just soaking it up
2013 Me: Who is Mastodon?
2019 Me: OH MY GAHD! IT'S MASTODON!
I love how Juan is playing a 9 minute solo on bass, just sitting in beautifully between everyone. He's a master of his craft.
Incredible....the bass player gets a gold medal here
The one and only Juan Alderete.
the true force of nature in this band
one of the greatest bands of humanity's entire existence.
Cedric was just in absolute top form this day. Not a damn note off, it's really quite something.
4:23 to 5:00 - Cedric absolutely nailed it. Fucking beautiful and haunting at the same time
Only now am I understanding the coolness of the bass in this song.
Jesus christ, it’s nice to hear juan in the mix for once, that man shreeeeddddds
By far the best performance of Roulette Dares I've ever seen.
this is one of the greatest live performances ever
It's cool, but vocals could've been better
pridgen is a beast... goddamn church drummers
“This is the haunt of roulette dares... weuweuweuweuweu 🎶”
This is hands down the best version of this song. What a classic. Thanks for the footage
Mmmm check this from Mexico vive latino 2004 that one is my favorite
Bass man gives it a full send and gets exactly zero camera time. Complete BS
3:24
Juan won
6:55 smashed my heart to the floor.
Juan Alderete es el hombre
@@nelsonsilvaapiolaza7516 totalmente.
Cedric hit some brutal high notes, I mean 4:54 damn
Man Ive been I massive MV fan but never seen this live performance, so tight, so soulful and what a rendition!!!
That's a sad part of a music lover. You won't get to see loads of bands you love play live. MV (especially 04) being one of them.
Tbh I'm happy as long is this is preserved for generations :)

Fuck, everyone is just going off here. Every single instrument is fucking amazing. One of, if not the best version of this song I’ve heard.
I love hearing that man play the drums…❤❤❤❤
That bass sends tho
Thomas Pridgen is unbelievable
Wow, Juan Alderete is a god.
Yes he is what holds this chaos down he is very very fucking good.
drew mckenzie just listen to the bass playing from 5:28 and on!!
These videos made me look up who the bass player was. Juan is a god. Love his stuff with Big Sir and his Pedals and Effects youtube channel.
I don't think another band can ever match up to TMV greatness. Six epic albums that are more than just music to me.
They are more "experiences" than "albums"
SoySauce HairDye Amen to that.
A-fuckin-MEN
The drummer is a beast!
Thomas Pridgen is his name, he lives in the SF Bay Area and plays jazz with some folks here when he isnt touring with various bands
I see why Juan Alderete has been on so much of Omar's solo projects. Juan is a fuckin incredible bassist
All that shredding with Racer X paid off in the end.
5:42 goddamn that's some excellent live bass tone.
One of the best bass players alive... Juan Alderete de la Peña ! What the hell is this energy
RHCPaddicted98 its called cocaine or cocaina in spanish jeje
speraza no way! They also pop some ecstasy and/or LSD as well haha.
Sean Sullivan not true. they all are completely clean at this point. except pridgen who smokes a fuckton of weed
Thomas Pridgen dude...
Chaotic neutral?
The amount of talent in this band is unreal
That drum timing is totally bananas.
Omar's melodic riffs are the shizzle.
listen to pridgen try and describe his time signatures and tempo changes is hilarious. he doesn't even know what to call half the stuff he does, he just knows how to do it. also the strongest right foot i've ever heard, right up there alongside zach hill (hella, most notably)

Most of this is 6/4
Man, I remember when i first saw these guys when i was a teenager several years ago... it's nice to see they still got it going, their love for music has never died.
Cedrics vocals from 4:22-5:00 are straight up insane
Straight up godly
Fooooooreal
Damn Juan on his Jaco shit. Underappreciated af
r.i.p. ikey owens..keyboardist for this performance...
R.I.P Isaiah
It's been 2 years... Figures.. I saw them Monday and it was the best I have ever seen them. Cedric's voice could not have been anymore on. I've watched a band from my home town become everything I have ever wanted in a band and win a Grammy. Keep practicing kid...
Drummer is jammin' the fuck out.
I spent the first half dancing like a crazy person. I spent the second half in my chair like, omg.
One of the most original sounding bands of all time
I was there. It was incredible. Best roulette i have seen live so far.
Thomas Pridgen is great! But he stopped playing with TMV bcus they're demonic, and he didn't like that...! 😎💋
They absolutely nail this one
Best live version of it, definitely.
Your not ready for it but your kids are gonna love it!!!!
oh yeahhhh its amazing but this is Y u have 2 turn your kids on to the term OUTSIDE the BOX....B Yoself ...MASTERFUL
4:55 HOLY *FUCK* @.@
Probably the nicest, cleanest, energetic note I've ever heard Cedric sing !
The guy in the monitor touch his ear xD
Opik-oort Nubem I noticed !! Lol
I'm a long life drummer but it's crazy how Juan carried the band in and out. jeez that guy was cooking
Juan has always been the glue that held this whole thing together. Most underrated bassist of all time
yep and they black balled him in the end.. he was the messenger between the two during their falling out and o/c claimed he was giving each of them false information. trying to geta piece of the pie that he indeed helped bake, he brought them every drummer they ever had. and held that bass tone down
I love how they make it rain with their awesomeness.
This is one of the most talented bands I've heard in a long time.
One of the most incredible live performances I've ever seen.
juan alderete is soooo fucking great!
I wish we had a video of this performance only showing him. he fucking killed it!
flea kilt it 2 on the studio version
drkillpatient100 hey the black man did a great job why do you have to say flea kilt it give the black man his props you punk
Juan Alderete's bass playing is the real gem of this clip.
Mars Volta should always be the night slot at a festival. Middle of the day is crime. Still slay it.
really nice version. Well played, Cedric. Juan was always the force of nature in this band, they had such virtuoso drummers especially with Pridgen the mr Alderate was just so important.
RIP Ikey
man, look at him...he was totally enjoying this...he will be missed.
Brann Dailor of mastodon on the side of the stage checkin out the superb drumming.

Right back at ya!
the rain towards the end was just perfect. Just right. man.
The Insiiiiiiide part is really awesome here!! Wow, gave me goosebumps...
And Omars guitar playing is damn fast here! They are only getting better
yeah this is one of their best live videos for sure
thomas pridgen

it's good there is someone out there who knows what music needs
what an amazing bass tone in the mix. It may be the best I heard Juan play live during the jam 5:30 - 9:40
4:18 sick and dope , dude my soul wants to escape from my body
even without the old drummer... they rock.. great job...for you all.i love you all... great stuff...great performance live
best live performance I've seen so far by these guys on here
I didn't think it was possible to find someone as good as Jon Theodore.
