- An animated Hanna-Barbera series inspired by 'The Great Race' (1965), 'Wacky Races' featured 11 cars competing for the crown of 'World's Wackiest Racer'.It ran for one season on CBS but two of the competitors (Penelope Pitstop and the team of Dick Dastardly/Mutley) got spinoff shows. Voice artists include Paul Winchell, Daws Butler, and Janet Waldo. The theme is by HB music director Hoyt Curtin (with Hanna and Barbera also listed by ASCAP). In 2017 a reboot aired on Boomerang (video-on-demand); it used the original theme cut down to about 20 seconds.
The reboot had Billy West and Peter Woodward as Dastardly and Muttley, as Paul Winchell and Don Messick had since passed.
Interestingly Billy's co star on Futurama was Lauren Tom, who happened to guest star on one of the earlier episodes of the original version of The Equalizer, which Peter's father Edward was the main lead.
This is what you used to call a cartoon. Great stuff.
This is my favourite cartoon of all! Still watch it to this day!!
I loved this show, as well as the Dick Dastardly and Muttley spinoff, which I always called "Stop the pigeon!"
Some say it was "Catch the Pigeon".
Good work! When it originally aired, the closing credits had a narration. Next week, it is "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour".
Great cartoon series 📼
Credits lines:
AND THEY'RE OFF AGAIN! The wacky race goes on and on, each driver determined to win, manuevering for position, looking for the opening that will put him in the lead.
The Ant hill mob uses getaway power!
Red max and the crimson haybailer makes his move.
The arkansas chuggabug uses jet power!
And the creepy coupe forces it with dragon power!
Oh it's gonna be a great race folks!
Hey wait a minute... STOP!
(everybody crashes)
This race starts next week.
Dastardly: Next week? That means i'll get a good start on the others!
(rocks fall on the mean machine)
DD: Drat. DRAT, and double DRAT!
*Classic Muttley snicker*
Sounds like Hal Blaine on the drums for this theme.
Make the end credits have the narration
I thought Dave Willock (the announcer) had a great voice for cartoons. He was also the voice for Gus Holiday in ROMAN HOLIDAYS.
Cannonball the cartoon
