Good for you, "average 54 year-old"! I am 64 and the going isn't as quick as it would have been decades ago, but I'm still improving after about 5 years. I don't see riding up stairs in my future, but maybe riding down. Backward and idling are still a work in progress and seated riding is coming along. Consider more off-road riding. I've found that to be a big skill improvement exercise and a heck of a lot of fun.

After over 2 years on EUC, I think it's like drawing a picture with your feet. And the safety is knowing what you're driving on and keeping a 360 view of what's around you. The two times I fell off is because I didn't care what was going under my tire. Slippery spots and speed bumps are the big things to watch out for.

Thanks for your comment. So far I have stuck to very familiar areas- the times I have wiped out I can trace the causes to fatigue and simple lack of focus and trying out unfamiliar shoes, and not eating, drinking, resting and stopping enough on a long ride- also one time I was wearing a much heavier backpack than what I was used to, riding in an unfamiliar area with lots of people- came around a corner and twisted my upper body much faster than usual which sent me into an unrecoverable extreme wobble- mostly hurt my ego, LOL

I seriously encourage you to keep at it with learning your bigger wheel- go at it slow and steady check out some of my videos from this time last year-It took me this whole year to get acclimated to the v11 and be able to start and stop at traffic lights with similar confidence and control- as I had on the little one- the bonus on the big wheel is being able to rest your legs against the sides/ saddle and of coarse the more cushy ride from the larger diameter and wider tire - I even only slowly built up to riding between 15-22mph. Is the Monster Pro a suspension wheel? I really wish they made these things in our country. Ride on

The has some drill isn’t videos for slow cruisers where he was exploring a different European city by EUC each week. He’s well worth watching on a winters evening! I live in Italy, so have the other problem. I ride all winter but very little in July and August as it’s just too hot. In the summer months gear is minimal tbh. Knee and elbo pads with wrist guards, T- shirt and shorts. When I started, I never quite realised it was so addictive! Thanks for your video..much enjoyed 👍

Thanks for sharing your experiences with the EUC, I am happy for you there is this possibility available in your Country.
I live in the Netherlands and with my age (67) I want to start riding the coming months, whatever happens.
These wheels are not allowed on public roads and I have to get used to off-road tracks most of the time to make me feel comfortable with it.
With lots of spare time for photography trips I like to use the wheel in Southern Europe to have a lot of fun 🙂, and enjoy my freedom the most.
Internationally we should team up as EUC-users and make it more acceptable for the younger ones to use these new means of transport as they do with bicycles the same.
It would really help those who are responsible for regulation and law, now and in the future.
Thanks for youre post, and enjoy every moment.

To be honest, there is an antiquated law in my town against riding Unicycles - with the exception of getting special permission from the police chief to ride one in a parade,LOL. I emailed my local representative and informed him about my hobby and described our modern wheels as a completely different device that I believe should not be restricted so severely as the old ordinance states. Almost 2 years riding in public and I have never been harassed by police. I ride all around town but I do my best to be responsible and alert and I often ride in the early morning. I see Personal Electric vehicles like EUC's as a turtle just starting out the race with the rabbit. One new rider at a time we will keep moving forward and people will find ways to monetize them as recreation, we don't even have shops yet to take them for repair, nor do we have a store to go buy the latest model- it's all mail order. We have such an advantage with EUC's that they are silent and elegant so we are not disturbing the peace with them and before anyone realizes what we are riding- we dazzle them with the care we take to ride safely and courteously-I hope you will find many beautiful places to ride and enjoy many hours of riding bliss..Ride On.

I love my V11 too, it was my first wheel, and I have a Sherman Max too. The Sherman is so much easier to ride than the V11, despite the greater weight. I wish more people I knew were riding! I still have a long way to go to improve my skills for sure, very glad especially when us 50 + people venture forth on EUC! I also hope that more people I know will try it. I actually was able to get at least 30 different people young and older to try my hoverboards inside my house-but EUC seems to be an extremely personal voyage of discovery and I get a little nervous at the idea of letting people try out my EUC inside my house so I haven't actually invited anyone to do that ..yet.

I agree that I would not have wanted to learn on a V11. Using a small light wheel really helps to get the confidence & muscle memory for the balancing aspect to gel when first learning. Yet, once I got acclimated to it, and my body got conditioned in the right areas to control the bigger wheel easily, there was no going back to the small wheel for the drastically better ride for these over 54 and previously damaged knees of mine!

Funny you mention that ! I'm the E-bike guy who's just decided to try an EUC since my E-bike has allowed me to park my car.
I'm just over the Bridge up here in the Couv and nearly every outing on the E-bike involves the Marine Dr trail between the bridges. South on one brudge, North on the other puts me @ around 24 miles per outing.
I was still working at PDX the yr I picked up my E-bike and made that 22mi round trip often, but haven't ventured much further into Portland, on the E-bike, than that.
InMotion is dumping the price on new V11's for the Holiday sales but the new V14 is just about to be released & my instincts are saying, wait for it.
eWheels are still evolving rather rapidly & that makes the new models more attractive for this first time buyer.

For cold hands, try some snowboarding gloves with built in wrist braces (Dakine makes an affordable pair), or they make gloves built specifically to go over wrist guards (Demon makes a pair). Personally, I'm looking for a pair of mittens/gauntlets to either go over my Demon Flexmeters, or an all in one mitten solution with built in wrist braces.
For cold feet, definitely layer. I go with a thin cotton dress sock and a thick wool sock over the top. Then just throw on some winter boots. If your boots have a decent tread but you're slipping on the pedals, you can always upgrade the pedals to something with spikes for more grip; looks like you just have the default sand paper ones on there.
Legs, snow pants that can slip on over whatever pants you're wearing. And of course a gaiter / Balaclava to cover your face and neck, or you can tie a scarf to cover your face / neck. Just be wary of fogging up your visor. Have fun!

Thank you for these great suggestions- I'm pretty picky about the shoes I wear to ride but it's clear I need new ones that will allow for layering socks in the cold. The grip tape on my v11 pedals is very grippy still and my tiny little pads offer me just enough to feel secure without feeling like I will get stuck when I want to dismount. I long for like a whole body suit with all the gear built in - you should see the ridiculous process I go through to Wear my safety Gear, lol But I think it helps put me in a hyper alert state of mind that says-yeah-you are about to go where the cars go so you better be ready to avoid contact with them and help them avoid contact with you. I think that I've read/seen that PEV riders especially EUC & OneWheel, average age is fairly old due to cost. I started 3yrs ago with a OW and the V8F at the age of 66. I've got 2 OWs and added the Veteran Patton. I've got 3900+mi on OW and 1000+mi on EUC. I originally didn't find the V8F to be fun but did find it to be a very practical commuter. I have had only one EUC crash that made me rethink whether to continue riding it or not ( huge bruise on left hip) but no broken bones. The exhilaration factor helped me decide to keep going but to be super cautious about wearing my gear, being well rested, and making better decisions on my longer rides. Please wear the gear- full face helmet as the minimum- you only have the one body! • @HeaveHoEUC
      @HeaveHoEUC  7 місяців тому

Yes the transition from the small wheel to the heavy one is definitely a process- it takes a while to build up the stamina to control those things on the stop and start and stand with one foot on the ground at intersections when necessary- the ride is such a blast it is tempting to start going out on longer rides before you get fully acclimated to the increased physical demands on your body. I just started a very physical job and had to stop riding even on good weather days for the past few weeks. Now however I think I may get a short cold ride in soon on the V11. Sadly the lockers at work aren't even big enough to fit the v5f- and I could just tuck it away behind the coat rack- however I'm a bit fearful that somebody would move it and accidentally turn on the power button resulting in some sort of damage or injury. Once I pass the probationary period of 45 days maybe I'll ask if there is a spot in the warehouse that they will let me park the V11. @HeaveHoEUC  4 місяці тому +1

Hmm, swollen ankles next day? How long are you riding, time and distance wise when you get the swelling? I don't get that but I am in a season of not riding very much-( it's 12 degrees outside right now) my longest ride was last summer I did 47 miles in 3 hours and didn't have any swelling the next day ( on My V11 suspension wheel . I have been riding EUC since I started learning December 27th 2021. However I did ride hoverboard for a good 10 months before that). And I rationalized that strong ankles would be important so I started doing heel raises to strengthen mine. Are your ankles rubbing on the wheel-? My v5f came with these small oval pads-maybe your v8s had those too Maybe changing your stance a bit could help -one foot slightly forward from the other and just slightly further from the body of the wheel. Age,weight, ride time, and your particular physique/medical history, stance etc I'm sure it all plays into why you get the swelling and you might be surprised that changing something small could alleviate that- I experienced the inner leg above the ankle bruising in the early weeks of rides over one mile before I was super confident on the wheel-due to clenching the wheel while learning to find and maintain balance-it wasn't painful and the bruising subsided and did not recur. Thanks for your comment-have a great day and Ride On!

Nothing is perfect - including each of us riders. You won't take the plunge until you accept this one fact- you will eventually crash to one degree or another and you will survive the embarrassment if it happens in public. So - you need safety gear and a deep sense of personal responsibility. I commend your high standards and careful planning, knowing yourself and your limits is essential especially considering the special care needed in storage conditions and battery care/ charging of the wheel, slow and steady. They are not more dangerous than cars. Put some padding on your wheel, Hop off and dump the wheel at low speed to preserve your body. Lastly, it's worth the risk and the hard work - if you have the means and the time to get one and learn it I encourage you to stop depriving yourself of the joy you will have the moment it clicks and you ride silently and swiftly with confidence down a trail and calmly simply shift weight to your heels and stop the wheel at will. It won't always be difficult - yet -it will always demand a certain level of vigilance to be a responsible operator.

Until 3 years ago most of the previous 25 years I was 30 pounds overweight and I've given natural birth to 4 children. It sounds like you are in much better physical condition than me- I do zero cardio and riding these things doesn't seem much like exercise but it clearly takes some core stamina and conditioning. It would surprise me greatly if the process of learning EUC would be as hard on knees as even one game of racquetball! Did I mention I have extreme bunions on my feet as well? ua-cam.com/video/xM15YgHlN0o/v-deo.html You might like this guy's information . Inmotion V5F 14" wheel is only like 26 pounds. I have never taught anyone to ride EUC but have helped many many people try out my hoverboard, some like my son got right on and rode almost immediately and all managed to get on hoverboard and at least stand on it and move slowly around the rug and then step off, and I still insist that there are significant enough parallels to EUC that it is worth the extra step if caution and safety is your goal- to learn a hoverboard indoors if only to get accustomed to the
#1) height of your first small EUC
      #2)hands free control
#3)forward facing with feet next to each other
#4)control with feet and similar mind body wheel connection which is unique to these two PEV's
Full disclosure- I've had 3 medium wipeouts 1st one 9mph on V5F "jacked-up" my shoulder- didn't see a Dr. limited mobility for a while but I still rode - pretty much back to normal now. Next one, low speed uncontrolled wobble on v11 I was fatigued near the end of a 30 mile ride-wearing bad shoes, had little sleep the night before, made some poor choices and there was a substantial crosswind. That one hurt. Result- melon sized bruise on upper rear thigh commonly referred to as "saddle bags",lol. That one made me seriously question my keeping the wheel. A month or two after that crash, I had another one less severe but landed in nearly the same area on body- again some poor choices I was wearing a heavier than usual packpack in crowded unfamiliar area and did a longer than usual upper torso turn to look behind me while coming out of a turn and swung back to the front too quickly which because of the backpack I assume it sent me into an extreme wobble- I wiped out, got up immediately and got back on. But again- never any broken bones, no Dr. visits. I kept my max speed to 9-12 on V5f and 15mph on v11until I had a lot of miles on the bigger wheel- now my max is 22 even though the v11 will do 31-34 mph. PEV's are no joke- you are doing well to ride your scooter-I do not have escooter skills.

@@HeaveHoEUC Group rides are nice, you just follow everyone else :) (granted, maybe some groups are faster/more intense than you're comfortable with)

Thanks for your comment. Yeah, they say they have a "chill" group which doesn't exceed 25 mph- I usually don't go over 22- I set the speed limit on my v11 at 25 mph even though they say it will go 31-34. I think maybe next spring or summer I could scope out the route they post ahead of time-like ride it in the early hours of a Saturday morning -to help me get accustomed to the sights and sounds and conditions of the area- then I will be able to focus more on safe riding and meeting the people, or it dawns on me that I could just go meet the people first without my wheel!!!! That would be a good solution to get my feet wet with them! They have a Friday night ride with a lakefront fire pit area reserved I think for December 1st! What group have you ridden with?

@@HeaveHoEUC I ride in Melbourne - only been on one group ride so far ( I got a kingsong 16x about a month ago :)), and it was with a bunch of eskate, onewheel and scooter rides - I was the only EUC there! We mostly stuck to bike paths and so on, with a few residential streets so it was a pretty easy ride.
I'd say just go for it with your wheel - go a little early to the staging point, chat with people and enjoy the ride. You can just follow everyone else, and I can't imagine they'll be consistently going much faster than 22mph - that's a pretty solid pace. Either way, you won't know until you try :)

Thanks for the advice- what are "cowboy work boots"? Is that cowboy boot style with a rubber sole or something? I will probably be buying some work boots for work and if they could do double duty as riding boots that would be terrific.

Hi, I just bought the INMOTION V11Y last week and I was wondering if I was too old to ride one of these things. I gonna try to ride it in the backyard this Easter Sunday. I turn 62 on August 9th. Your video helps me to at least try it, right? I see all the kids riding these things on UA-cam and why can’t I, right?

I'm 55 now and I did start on hoverboard and then the smaller V5F. If you lived down the street from me I would definitely loan you my hoverboard and V5F to sorry of ramp up to the V11 but you are a stronger male so maybe it will go fine - it took me months to learn EUC first in my basement then on 24x24 foot patio. My only advice for you is to wear the safety gear and definitely celebrate tiny accomplishments, like riding 5feet,then 10 feet etc.. and put it away right after you have a success and then build on that the next day - patience and persistence are needed, don't give up!! Listen to your body- Ride On!

Question since you seem to be around. I did buy a full face helmet, body armor, elbow, knee and palm protectors. I also bought the power pads. Can I put them on for my first rides or keep them off?

I was at Menards like a good Hobbit- buying pots and soil and plant food for repotting my baby lemon trees that I started from seed when I saw your comment on my phone and responded. I'm home now and from my perspective- when learning and always, I want to be able to hop off the thing if I feel I need to bail and having power pads on, in my mind, made me think it would inhibit me hoping off- ( I found that the grip tape on the pedals was sufficient to feel secure )but on the other hand- the power pads could be some sort of protection for padding the wheel when it dumps over. I still only use the very minimal home made pads with a tiny bump in the front for added security shown in the video. Always listen to that part of you that advises caution and patience- it will be worth the wait, and then you need to keep reminding yourself to be vigilant once you learn it-you don't want your friends and family saying "I told you so" if you injure yourself in a bad crash ( also being hurt sucks)- you want them to see your safety and success and say to themselves " he can do it - I might be able to do it" I have crashed and sustained a bruised hip last summer. So yes there is a steep learning curve- I'm still a novice with 2200 miles under my belt. And I was mostly sedentary for 30 years until I started riding so it might be much easier for you.

I am determined to see just how many miles I can rack up on the V11 before something breaks ( 1950 miles as of today), gave my V5F to someone else so they can learn without worrying about the expense. The V11 is still heavy for me to cart around up and down stairs and in and out of my truck!
