Noice. Meanwhile the first time me and mother went to America by ourselves (me nearly 18 though I didn't look it because dwarfism and her elderly and disabled in a wheelchair, I know there's a massive age gap lol) Heathrow saw my mother in the wheelchair, took her to the START of the tunnel you take from the boarding area to the plane, and told her to walk the rest of the way.
That's a 2/3 minute walk for me and I can stand if I need to in a queue.
That's a marathon for her hanging onto me and shuffling her feet and going quite slowly and she CANNOT just stand even clinging onto me like a disabled eagle because it hurts her and they expected her to just get up from her wheelchair and walk, not even letting me push her to the door.
They haven't dared do this since because she yelled at them so much.
Not like tiny dwarfish me could have carried her AND our carry on bags.
Eventually they moved the wheelchair to the door, and now we travel with her own personal wheelchair, which people have since attempted to make off with despite it not looking anything like an airport wheelchair. I have had to run to the rescue.
This was a decade ago, btw.

Got a real big twinge of nostalgia from this one. Thank you. I was taken back to my days with the airline (1966-1998) and how things were handled during an IROP. Teeside reminded me of one of the first terminals I worked in - it was a repurposed Air Force field building. And it seemed the attitude of the people at KLM was the “old ways” and not the impersonal service we tend to get today. Again many thanks.

I really enjoy Paul's reviews (air and rail) because they are always structured, detailed and documented. That's a big change from other airline vlogers who are so much into perks and luxury self-indulgence. This week I cancelled a return business ticket with AF as they were giving too much grief with my sport equipment. KLM allows sport equipment with no surcharge provided it doesn't exceed specific dimensions. Dank je wel.

A couple of minor corrections. Air UK was purchased by KLM somewhere around 1996/7 (the exact date of the agreement is unknown to me) and incorporated into KLM Cityhopper, KLM's low cost, very efficient and flexible daughter company. The routes previously flown by Air UK were incorporated into Cityhopper's network over a two-three year period as Air UK was wound down. The reason for the takeover was that British Transport Holdings, Air UK's owners were a marginally profitable company but flew nearly 35-38% of KLM's connecting traffic into Amsterdam. Having Air UK go belly up would not have been in KLM's interest. Currently Cityhopper has one less Embraer than KLM has 737's. Come the introduction of the Embraer E2 series in 2021 you may well find Cityhopper has more aircraft than KLM has 737's.
The platform where you parked in the Embraer in Amsterdam has had various names. Amongst them were A Platform and later Bravo Platform (due to the stand designations and in this area), the Commuter Platform as used by the Airport in official documents but the internal name by the workers is "het mieren nest" meaning ant's nest because of the apparently chaotic but ordered work performed by the turnaround crews. The Fokker Farm was a term used by engineers.
With regard to delays and unusual events you will find many KLM captains and crew members will speak directly to passengers at the gate. It's what they do because they want to. They know who pays their wages, what their passengers want to know and the questions most likely to be asked. The iPads issued to all crew members will have the latest information on the ground. Unfortunately speaking to passengers at the gate is not always possible. The idiots who end up running British airports often prevent this with rules that prevent crews from moving from the Apron to the Gate pathetically citing "security" as the reason (airports hate pilots). So if this is not possible crews will often make a public address in the cabin. You will also find that Amsterdam ATC Flow planners, the people who restrict traffic are totally unaware of modern aircraft performance and limitations and will needlessly overreact to any weather condition or event (my experience with nearly 8,000 flights over 20 years). Some consider that the largest department in the LVNL (Dutch CAA and ATC) is the Flight Prevention Department. If they were told Burger King had run out of mayonnaise (chip saus - a Dutch necessity) they would impose a 30% flow reduction - because!

I luckily fly KLM for work, who book us all in Ecconomy class. The regular reasonably priced upgrades are great. Also access to the new Non-Schegen Crown Lounge makes the ticket a little bit more worth it - as that is usually £46 on it's own for access (offered on the app at check in). I normally sit in the bar on the top floor for a quieter experience and view, worth it as the cost of a coffee or a beer if you ask me.

    • @jacobprescott396
      @jacobprescott396 4 роки тому

I'm sure it does. its about the normal average length for an international airport. I think one of the presidents once landed here in Air Force one. Your right about the potential. It has a larger catchment area than LBA and Newcastle. However to get this airport up to the standards that modern international (somewhat) busy Airports (like LBA and NCL) a lot of work has to be done. Improved Terminal, Scrapping the terminal Fee, More air side ancillary services and products, Better Taxiway links (especially for RWY23), Better connections to the airport etc. Ben Houchen has done a Terrific Job, but there is still miles more that needs to be done to get this airport up to scratch. We are certainly not out the woods just yet. All us Teessider Aviation geeks can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope for the airport to catch on with the low cost carriers that will start bringing in the flights and footfall to the airport.

In the city of Hamilton (30 miles west of Toronto) at the John C. Munro Intl. airport you will find The Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum (CWHM). They have a flying Lancaster in their collection referred to as the "Mynarski Memorial Lancaster". It is painted in the colours of his aircraft KB726 , VR-A . Vera as we enthusiast's call her . For $3600 . plus a modest membership fee you can actually take a 60 minute flight on her . I watch it fly over Toronto almost every weekend during its flying season . Cheers .

Remember AirUK? My first ever flight as a very small person was on an AirUK Fokker Friendship, then the next year one of the early BAE-146s, although as a small child I didn’t believe WhisperJet was an appropriate name for the nose of a Jet!

Great to hear a mention of AirUK again. I worked with them for quite a few years as cabin crew and did the MME-AMS run on occasion on the old F27/F50.
A great little airline in it's day - a shame it came to an end... But that's the aviation industry :-/

The last time I flew KLM ORD to NWI, I upgraded to business class after check in for a major discount and it was the biggest hassle to get the upgrade I paid for. They took the money out of my account right away but my online check in didn't reflect my upgrade and I spent over 7 hours online waiting for a response then another 4 hours on the phone with their customer service. Their plane service and staff are amazing, but over the phone and online they're absolutely one of the worst I had to deal with. Their app has a lot of problems, so make sure you keep proof and screenshots of any purchases or last minute upgrades just in case!

Love your videos! The funny thing is I caught another video of another You Tuber taking KLM from Amsterdam to Chicago he also was going business class! I was like okay wow! Until I heard you say the view was blocked and I can see that! But on the other person’s video he showed a 2nd floor outside (non-smoking) lounge you could watch planes from. Incidentally when he pans to the planes you can see the passageway you showed in your video.

Back in the day of Cyprus Turkish Airlines (KTHY), because of the restrictions making all planes departing from Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus to land in a Turkish mainland Airport, KTHY would often divert to an unscheduled Turkish Airport before continuing to London. For example, we may have been scheduled to land in Antalya, but we would stop in Bodrum for example instead. Very weird... but I do sort of miss KTHY... they were just such a unique airline

I am amazed by people saying its good how klm is giving so much updates. Its pretty normal for Dutch airlines to do that. Its pretty normal that you have a delay at Amsterdam cause of slots and full capacity of schiphol. I flew TUI this January and they had troubles with the motor. They try to update us as much as possible and they sended us sms messages for information. Always very nice except the delay then

KLM are probably one of the best airlines in Europe, they provide a very comprehensive service flying to many of the smaller regional airports.
I have always loved their customer service and the great value for money that they offer.
Staff are generally very friendly and accommodating, I would rather fly KLM than Ryanair or Easyjet. And I feel ever so slightly more at home with KLM than with BA.

Teesside Airport has great potential to return to its former busy self. They must sort out the ludicrous " one train a week on a Sunday" farce.
A big tidy up of the airport grounds needed. The airport is perfectly placed to serve Teesside, Darlington, and beyond.
