  • Without a doubt, this is the single most important engine in Ferrari’s history and brought the company to its current reputation. It was meant to be a race engine but served well as a core road car engine for most of the models for over 40 years with a large scale of versions: from 1.5-litre up to nearly five litres. It also introduced one of the most typical combinations in the automobile world: a V12 Ferrari.

Did wonder if the Colombo V12 could have been stretched from 5-litres to 6-litres and consequently made for a viable V6 displacing up to 3.0-litres to be used in something like the Innocenti 186 GT. After all the 1966 ASA Roll-Bar (not to be confused with the 6-cylinder RB613) was said to have made use of a stretched version of the Colombo-based 4-cylinder used in the ASA 1000 GT that grew to 1800cc (or 1755-1756cc) by way of a 90mm bore and 69mm stroke, which when adding the former's 90mm bore with the Colombo V12's 78mm stroke creates a V12 displacing 5955cc.

thinking about it 100hp per litre was insane. i think the last naturally aspirated road car to achieve that with an engine smaller than 3 litres was the integra type r and that was over thirty years later.

    • @jamesengland7461

I believe that was because of high compression and race gas. The Chevy Cosworth Vega 2.0 4 could achieve 300hp running on alcohol [as an obscure example] in about 1975.

    3:38 It's so weird seeing 3 4-barrel carbs on a Ferrari.
My dad almost bought a red Daytona GTB/4, but bought the first metal bodied 308 GTB instead. It lacked the power to keep up with the 12s on the straights. He gutted the muffler and put in a cross-flowing muffler from a 70 Camaro. It made all the difference in the world for power and sounded even better.

Wow I tell you that one scene on that ferrari 250gto opening up, damn! Really damn! That was revolutionary performance at a time with slow revving heavy V8 motors, although it also has to be mention that even a Ferrari with a 5 liter v12 and 400hp had to watch out for a 426 hemi. The hemi was a serious motor but it was crude, really this GTO taking off, my dad had a Acura Integra type R in 2001 and that was a motor with similar levels of acceleration. Back in the 50's nobody had a concept of a high revving motor with 100hp/liter. Wow! that was really something back in the day.

    Mercedes licensed the Chevy design.
