CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Max Shreck (Christopher Walken) introduces Oswald Cobblepot (Danny DeVito) to his campaign team for mayor.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In this first sequel to 1989's Batman, the Caped Crusader (Michael Keaton) is up against the Penguin (Danny DeVito), the hideously deformed scion of a wealthy Gotham City family. The Penguin plots with evil businessman Max Schreck (Christopher Walken) to become mayor and then turn Gotham into a cathedral of crime. Upon overhearing these plans, Schreck's mousy secretary Selena Kyle (Michelle Pfeiffer) is tossed from a high-rise window by her boss. Rescued by a covey of kittens, Selena transforms into the leather-clad Catwoman. In this guise, she teams with the Penguin and Schreck to divvy up their ill-gotten gains and help discredit Batman-but she also has her own scores to settle. Paul "Pee-Wee Herman" Reubens, Vincent Schiavelli and Jan Hooks play significant bits, while Pat Hingle and Michael Gough make returns as, respectively, Commissioner Gordon and Alfred the Butler.

God this character scared the hell out of me
I found him more disgusting than terrifying.
@@coreytoomey7579 both i guess
Me too
My favorite man in Gotham.. lol
Me too
The way The Penguin talks, god. The way he chews every word, he bites it, then spits it out. You can sense the contained rage, the boiling wrath. One can only imagine what kind of life he had as an abandoned, deformed child, as a frustrated teenager. It's great acting, very under-rated.
I agree its justo awesome!
Danny Devito uses this same acting in Always Sunny
I got the same vibe from Taxi.
It's great acting, but it's so NOT the Penguin. But then, the Batman 89 series got all the villains completely wrong. Riddler acted like Mad Hatter. Two-Face was ridiculous and acted like the Joker. The Joker acted like Jack Nicholson (surprise there, huh?). Mr. Freeze acted like every bad Arnold character. They just didn't care if the villains were true to the source material, so we got a Penguin that was waddling around in his longjohns oozing black goo from him mouth and acting like a savage beast.
@@nixnightbird138 What's the Penguin supposed to be then?
I'm surprised no one's cringing at seeing Penguin eating a raw fish.

People talk about Ledger as The Joker. Danny DeVito's portrayal as Oswald Cobblepot is my favorite

mark hamil the best joker when it comes to his laugh
Yes, because Heath Ledger was the best penguin?
Exactly!!
Health ledgers joker would chop this dudes head off.ahahahahahahahahah.
Underrated Performance by DeVito , He was incredible in this movie !
Can't believe the Razzi's nominated him. Actually, I can...
@@goldfilms995
He made him bleed! That’s gotta hurt!
1:07 this is actually my favorite part. I love how he is acting like a dangerous and agitated animal about to strike while this woman thinks it's a good time to talk about gloves and take his fish. Like trying to put a party hat on a rabid grizzly bear during feeding time.
Also, Christopher Walkens' expressions tell you all you need to know about his character.
Anyone who owns a dog knows that you never mess around a animal or it’s food while it’s eating.
DeVito's Penguin is simultaneously hilarious and lethal. Had to be difficult to pull off. One of the best Batman villains, right up there with both Nicholson and Ledger's Jokers and Neeson's Ras Al Ghul.
What about Cillian Murphy as Scarecreow?
@@Johnlindsey289 still can't get over the fact that it's pronounced "Killian"
@Johnlindsey289 Cillian was terrific as Scarecrow. I think he was severely underused though.
And no bane.....?
Daaaaaamn you all going to treat him like that?
Tsk tsk tsk....
" I was born in the dark......"
Agreed. Cillian Murphy’s Scarecrow was fantastic
One of the greatest performances as a supervillain ever
Really... how did Devote get the razzle nomination? As children, we often have poor judgment but I still don't see anything terrible about his performance as Cobblepot
Danny Devito is the true Penguin
ΙΩΑΝΝΗΣ ΓΟΡΔΙΟΣ Because he's the only penguin?
wtfduud there was a penguin in the adam west tv series
Danny Devito penguin is too campy and weird. It could have done without all the unnecessary exaggeration to his appearance. I don't see why they made him deformed and weird like that. They should have just made him a normal mobster like he is in Gotham. I think Robin Lord Taylor's Cobblepot portrayal is way more realistic and natural then DeVito's exaggerated deformed version.
+Jon Mizzz Apparently, Burton thought the Penguin was boring, visually.
+Jon Mizzz Campy? No, dark and weird, perhaps, but work here.
This Penguin is up there with Ledger's Joker! That nose bite is a definite 'pencil trick' moment.
Sure is
TA-DAAAAH
It's--(compulsive mouth lick)--gone!
Why his nose are bleeding
@@edwinahadpour6153 Because the penguin chewed on his nose
yeah
People underestimate the Burton Batman films too much, just watch and enjoy please....
pspboy7 People just have different opinions. I liked the movies, but others didn't. I get it. I mean, how could a guy like this become mayor, bite someone's face off, and people are just like 'ah well, no biggie. Just keep working'. I don't really mind, I saw them as a kid, making them nostalgic to me, but it this was released today, I'd laugh my ass off at how stupid it actually is haha. Especially this one.
pspboy7 Either way to me as a comic book fan of Batman. Burton had alot of flaws for him Batman franchises. Do you want me to tell you or do you want to figure it out?
The best ones in my opinion, BUT I really like Batman and Robin for how disgustingly campy it was
yeah
"Either way to me as a comic book fan of Batman. Burton had alot of flaws for him Batman franchises."
Nolan´s movies aren´t accurate either. But both are still good adaptions.
Out of all the Batman villians, I personally find Danny DeVito's Penguin the stuff nightmares are made of
I know right!? In fact i'm not surprised why most Batman fans consider Danny Devito's interpretation of the Penguin to be frightening and terrifying considering that it was based on Lon Chaney's character from London After Midnight.
Does anyone else think the actress playing Jen, the 'image consultant' is terrific? She had such few lines but she made the best of them. Seriously, from the moment she introduces herself to Pengüin and is not terrified of him but still gets startled from his bizarre animalistic behavior I mean laawd. This movie is pure genius.
That's the incomparable Jan Hooks, who started her career on a long, epic run on SNL. She's wonderful in this brief cameo, but she always pitch perfect. She left us in 2014, passing away at 57 of cancer. Such a talent. RIP Jan.
Jan Hooks was fine
"Frank Runs For Mayor"
**orchestral intro music plays*
Danny DeVito's Performance as The Penguin is Highly Underrated.
This Whole scene puts a smile to my face. :3
There's never a dull moment with Penguin. imo.
This is probably the scene that cost Burton the third movie.
+thepunkster90x aren't you glad he included it anyway?
If the studio didn't want it they could have made him cut it.
They trusted him after the first was a hit an told him he could do what ever he wanted
thegooseman90 This was a very important scene. It shows the penguin's campaign team supporting him in his bid to run for mayor. Also we cannot forget that Danny Devito was a comedic actor. The Penguin eating fish and making weird grunt noises added humor to this scene.
What do you mean?
Funny how he spat out the cigarette holder, one of the most iconic things the penguin is known for
That part was always very funny to me! LOL
I hated that. It was Tim Burton and Danny DeVito rejecting and disrespecting decades of source material and a classic iconic character.
@@IrishCarney Yeah yeah, go back to your room little nerd. Learn to laugh 😂😂
Make me wonder he also going to give Penguin a top hat and a monocle if he didn't spit out the cigarette holder?

"Not a lot of reflective surfaces down in the sewer"...
As Heath's Joker would say, "very poor choice of words"
Great performance, Mr. De Vito!!!!
eliza consuegra he was born to play two roles. Penguin and Mr. Spacely in the Jetsons
is it me or does walken look like bill Clinton in this lol
i see it too lol
Simon wadsley Funny you should say that. Bill Clinton became president the following year this movie came out.
Ryan Blanche he was elected a few months after this came out
Well, it was the early 1990s.
He’s got Beethoven vibes
Despite being dark for its time, I found the nose bite moment hilarious.
Uh… why?
this batman bring back more memories than you could possibly imagine
You know McDonald's had originally planned a set of happy meal toys for the film's release but because it ended up being so dark they had to cancel it. I'm sure this scene didn't help in that decision.
I love Batman and Batman Returns but I always found the nose biting scene to be over the top and unnecessary. And Danny Devitos face right before he does it is just fucking terrifying!
What about the Pencil scene in Dark Knight?
They actually released happy meal toys right before of at the release. I was ten and my parents and i took a road trip to Las Vegas from Houston. Along the way , up had a Batman returns happy meal with catwoman toy. She was driving a cat car. They also released Batman cups that were plastic and large. I have two of them still
+Anthony Hebisen
Me too i was 10 in 92 and had a happy meal with a penguin toy and plastic cup, i saw this at the movies when it came out and also went to vegas that summer as i had been traveling with my grandparents since 89 to the 90s in the summer or fall to vegas.
You remember Batman the animated series when it premiered too?
I know they released the toys because I had one as a kid and I remember the commercials. But, I also know that McDonald's was upset over how non-child friendly the film was. Maybe they stopped the promotion early, but I don't know. I just remember my parents not wanting me to see the movie because they thought the first film was too dark since they only knew about Batman from the 60's TV show.
@@Johnlindsey289 Batman was aggressively marketed to kids at the time. The Dark Knight was really not at all.
Am I the only who thinks Penguin is friggin adorable in this scene? This is his first time having something like this happening to him, and if you count out those wierd grunts he makes and the raw fish, he's pretty much acting like a little kid having his first birthday party, all curious but confused at the same time. It's oddly cute. XD
The actor who played Josh is Steve Witting. He also played Burt on the 80s sitcom known as "The Hogan Family". I had pleasure of working with him on a parish theater production that he directed. Great acting.
No wonder The Penguin is so creepy, it's a "Tim Burton Film"
Regular UA-cam Name and all of his Film’s are dark
Man of his word and action my kind of mayor
Ever been in a storm Wally?
I like to fill her void too, Penguin. This movie was so dark and sexy with all the innuendos.
Jen had a magnificent and shapely ass
My favorite part, it's a pity it wasn't included in this clip
Just realised that Jen was in Third Rock from the Sun - the girl that got it on with Harry
The Penguin is very articulate given that he was abandoned by his human parents and then only later found by a circus sideshow.
When your messy but your mom puts in the center of attention
1:32 This part cracks me up!! 😆😆😆
Holy shit that guy's from Always Sunny as well. "You ever been in a storm Wally?"
Not a thunderstorm. But a storm of fists.
Someone should make a 10 hour loop of the 1:38 moment xD

I love this movie and that dude was irritating "not a lot of reflective surfaces in the sewer " so I wasn't suprised when the penguin took a bite out of his nose but Max's response was the best he was like everybody back to work nothing to see here he didn't give a S**T LOL 😁😂
The nose bite terrified me as a kid...but man it never stopped me from replaying the tape over and over!
Its always helpful when the characters in the movies point out the plot holes for us.
1:39 And a meme was born.
My nose could be gushing blood. Lol
That man was asking to have his nose bit
Funny thing is. Jen is actually Jan in life. Jan Hooks.
This penguin played by De vito was so much more creative, touching and overall better than the original penguin character.
Thanks Burton!
And what do you think of Penguin on Batman the animated series and his first 3 season design that looks like Devito?
Hated it. Burton and DeVito crapped on the source material and the classic character. When comic book movies act like the source material is just too uncool and they have to "go in a new direction" and be "edgy" and "challenge preconcieved notions" blah blah they're showing their total lack of respect for what made the source material popular enough to get the movie greenlit in the first place. You might say they're biting their own noses

Imagine Burgess Meredith's Penguin biting someone's nose XD
He would laugh and squawk after that
Fun fact: Danny DeVito actually ate a raw fish for this scene. Because he was so committed to the roll.
Role
How did he not die?
It’s not that bad. You can eat a salmon straight out of the water. Bear Grylls ate more than that in his hiking shows
Homeboy tried to play him so he bit his fucking nose off LMAO
I remember seeing this in the theatre when I was 4, I started crying at this scene and my parents made us leave because they already hated the movie anyways
The fact that this movie was marketed to kids, including via McDonald's Happy Meal toys, was an outrage
@@IrishCarney
They had kids merchandise even a cereal
@@Johnlindsey289 Terrible. I'd guess those deals were made long before it was clear how far Burton pushed the movie, but at some point when the art was delivered and clips as well for the ads, it had to be clear how bad it was, and it's at that point that the toy and cereal companies are also implicated
1:54 LOL 😂
I don't see how they thought to give Danny DeVito a Razzie for this; he was an awesome Penguin, only thing was that he was kind of a shock when you went from Burgess Meredith's Penguin and B:TAS Penguin, because they were more posh, but he went hard with the new direction of Penguin and I really liked him, this is the best of the Burton Batman films in my opinion.
Paul Williams was Penguin on Batman TAS and noticed how on seasons 1 to 3 of that show that Penguin looked liked Devito's as much as Selina Kyle looks like Michelle before the redesigns of season 4?
@@Johnlindsey289 ah, thanks for that correction, and yes, I definitely noticed the design choices, subtle things like the length of Penguin's hair and the crook of his nose along with Selina being blonde instead of a brunette as she's often depicted.
He would never be a mayor. He would be a bloody monster.
Look at Rob Ford.
Notice he spit out the long cigarette the image consultant gave him. That was a nod to the old Adam West Batman show and comic Penguins.
Noticed that Penguin on TAS looks like Devito?
1:55 JESUS CHRIST!
Mom remembers when I used to nibble on her nose.
Paul Bauman I'll bet she loves u very much
He actually deserved it after that comment he made about reflective surfaces in the sewer. You don't expect to joke about the Penguin's looks after what he's been through and not suffer consequences
It’s crazy how Danny Devito can go from this to Frank from it’s Always Sunny. Such a versatile actor
Scenes like this are what makes Batman Returns so special.
The real Penguin was never really a monster. Criminal is one thing but monster, no.

Blue XD the blonde One?
I'm still thoroughly convinced that the Penguin in this movie isn't played by Danny DeVito but rather DeVito's character on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He barged on set and held Tim Burton hostage until he got the role. And he insisted that the Penguin be more like his wrestling character, the Trash Man, only instead of eating garbage he eats raw fish and human noses.
BATMAN RETURNS GREAT MOVIE !!!
I find it hella funny that while ol girl is talking to Oswald at 1:10 he is busy checking her out lmao
I swear it's DeVito playing Frank Reynolds playing the Penguin 🤣

Rest in Peace Jan Hooks.
I remember as a little kid, me and my dad were watching tv when we saw that this film was going to be shown later that night. Since it was already kinda late, we decided to record the film when it was shown (Our TV had the ability to record for us shows that was going to be shown, so you would select it, and then press to record it when it's shown). The next day, I watched, and I remember being absolutely TERRIFIED by this version of the penguin. I genuinely thought "What the hell???? He looks like an actual penguin with that face of his" I was just terrified by the fact of how much of an actual penguin he looked. Man, that's such a good memory......
