I love how even in Batman Returns, Penguin is an criminal lord of the underworld. Even though the gang is themed after a circus, Penguin is still essentially a mafia boss.
@@Governor2310 The Razzies have never been known to be tasteful and just like the Oscars; the very award ceremony they mock they get it wrong most of the time. For example, they "nominated" Bruce Willis for Worst Performance by Bruce Willis for a string of pretty bad straight to video/streaming movies back in 2021 and then it was revealed that Willis has frontotemporal dementia which is getting worse and worse by the day as well as the fact that one of the executives on those movies took advantage of his aphasia (that's losing the ability to understand and express speech due to brain damage; in Willis' case most likely caused by the dementia) for years to make money. They rescinded it but the damage was done. Then there's also nominating Shelley Duvall for Worst Actress back in 1980 (first year into their little joke of a ceremony no less) for her performance in "The Shining" when they knew about the unnecessarily cruel treatment she received from director Stanley Kubrick on set. They also rescinded this but it was forty years too late.
This may be the finest bit of blackmail I've seen portrayed in a movie. Throughout his career, Schreck sent the evidence of his sins to the sewer, whether it be merely flushing some incriminating documents down the commode, disposing of the corpse of poor Fred, or dumping untold gallons of lethal toxic waste. It all went away; for him the Gotham sewers were Oblivion itself...or so he thought. Now Schreck is a soulless opportunist, so he isn't too rattled by this revelation and quickly moves to cut a deal. But the idea presented here is scary as hell. Imagine how terrifying it would be to have somebody in the shadows, someone you've never even met, patiently keeping a record of your dirty deeds, building leverage until he has absolute power over your life and reputation. I hear Cobblepot's working for the NSA these days. The government knows talent when it sees it.
That’s the thing with Penguin. Whenever a crime was committed, he always knew about it either before or within 24 hours after it was done and knew specifically who was involved. While he did commit crimes himself, he was like an information broker and was a regularly a source of information for Batman when he needed information.
Thats beautifully put. I went to find things clip again. I like the part when he pulls out the severed body parts of Max's former partner he murdered and thats what finally makes the unscrupulous businessman break and cooperate.
Writers forget that the Penguin is verbose. His speaking ability is a weapon. The writers did a great job in making interesting words come out of Penguin's mouth.
I love how initially Max is unnerved by Fred's disembodied hand, but once Penguin uses it to shake his hand and then leaves it there, he just stands and looks at it like, "Seriously?"
Max was only unnerved that The Penguin *knew* about it. Max was fine with having Fred Atkins killed & dismembered, so Max likely killed business partners more than once (especially with pushing Selina out the window,) & he doesn't seem to mind holding dead body parts. He's wearing gloves, too, so it's not direct skin contact with germs.

You can tell Burton had more creative control over Returns so the film turned out a lot better than the original 1989 film which he admitted was mostly a boring film. 1989 Batman didn't quite feel like a Tim Burton film. As a kid, I never liked the original film even though it had a better villain than Returns. Batman Returns seems to have a much better grasp of the universe of Gotham City, so it doesn't have to explain it like in the original film. The film just seems to have better characters and more of a story to tell. I felt like the only thing the original film had to say was that Batman/Wayne had issues with Jack/Joker because he killed his parents. The relationship between Bruce had with Vicky didn't feel as natural as with Selina. You could feel that Bruce actually cared about Selina more in this movie despite the fact that he didn't spend as much time with her and didn't get to sleep with her.

Danny Devito was so ghoulish and scary plus his body makeup fit the role so well. And this meeting is telling with blackmail, political and business corruption as is so common in the world.
"Actually, this is all just a bad dream. You`re home in bed, heavily sedated, resting comfortably ... dying from the carcinogens you personally spewed in a lifetime of profiteering. Tragic irony, or poetic justice? You tell me."
If ever there was a great application for the *Villain/ Real Villain* memes, it's this movie. Although Shrek is clearly a villain, I think Penguin is more a result of tragedy here.
I like how Penguin mentioned from 2:12-2:21 how he’s ready to leave the sewer being down there too long (33 years) explaining to Max that it’s time for him to leave the sewer being ready since he’s been in the sewer while the Joker was in town and the only reason he wasn’t ready to leave the sewer and show himself to the town while the Joker was around was because he (Penguin) was still working on making his umbrella weapons, creating his plan to capture all Gotham’s children, and working out to get a henchmen together which was the circus gang and probably one month after the Joker died, Penguin completed everything being ready to leave the sewer where probably one circus gang member in disguise came and wrote a note and put it on a bulletin board that a penguin is in the sewer and someone read it and it got to the newspaper as seen a newspaper boy in the beginning of the movie selling newspapers saying “a penguin sighting in the sewers, check it out.”
Of course Danny Devito is amazing in this role. However I’d love to see another take on the penguin again at some point, just because he’s such a fascinating villain

1:12 my favorite penguin’s trick 🌂 with the 🗡.
I like the 🔥too.
It took me a while to realize that the Penguin only _found_ Max's associate's dismembered body. When I first watched this, it went over my head; I thought the Penguin killed Fred, but no, it was Max.
This movie still holds up. Two thumbs up 👍 👍
Love watching this as a 40 yr old adult compared to when I was a teenager in the 90s... it has a completely different feel through now an adults eyes....... Danny and Michelle were cast perfectly for these roles. Nobody catch touch their performances
Danny devito really gave penguin poetic justice
1:57 So anyway I start blastin' EERRHHH!!!!
The best part is the beginning when the penguin loudly quacks right in Shrek's face.
Max only listens to penguin after he threatens to reveal that max is a murderer lol.
When I watch this, it's not a movie, it's a film, a motion picture and at the same time it feels like i'm watching a play i can't stop watching
i wasn't born in the sewers you know
Ethan Diffey no but the teenage mutant ninja turtles are born by mutation and live in a sewers with a ninja rat sensei master in New York City underneath a sewer
I come from...LIKE YOU.
@Ethan Diffey That's right. I learned that Penguin has been in the sewers probably ever since before the Joker has come to town.
And like you, I want some respect.
question is: how would he know?
Someone needs to make a Danny devito penguin lego minifigure
Chronic Heartburn I agree with that it’s an awesome idea
They did, search for his arctic roller (at least, that's what I think it's called) it's a good looking figure!
Find the Lego Batman Movie Penguin minifigure, it should match
Phnates 2 yes I would love to see a lego Danny DeVito penguin MiniFigure along with Jack Nicholson Joker as well as Tommy Lee Jones Two-Face Jim Carrey Riddler and Uma Thurman Poison Ivy Arnold Schwarzenegger Mr Freeze Jeep Swenson Bane and Michelle Pfiefer CatWoman as well as Pat Hingle Commissioner Gordon and Michael Gough Alfred the Butler and the two face’s sugar and spice as well as Kim Basinger Vicki Vale Nicole Kidman Chase Meredian and Chris O’Donnell robin and the Michael Keaton Val Kilmer and George Clooney Bruce Wayne and Elle Macpherson Julie Newmar and even Rachel Dawes with Lucius fox and Ducard and Ra’s al Ghul and Scarecrow from Batman begins as well as Christian Bale Bruce Wayne and Michael Caine Bruce Wayne and John Blake with Gary oldman commissioner Gordon and Anne Hathaway CatWoman
the stockings with all the incriminating evidence gets me all the time basically telling him your gonna do this whether you like it or not
I love the dialogue!
Best Penguin portrayal ever
No doubt.
That mortician did a GREAT job with Frank's make-up!
For me, this is one of Danny De Vito's best roles, if not his best. His performance is very Shakespearean, as if he were playing Richard the Third.
Sir Danny Devito is one of the greatest actors in American culture.
Christopher Walken also
2 legends in there.
"A lot of tape and little patience make all the difference" lulz!
man Devitos acting was incredible in this movie! I didn't realize this when I saw this movie as a kid.
Love this movie and Danny devito for his performance and his blackmailing on max for crimes.👨💼🐧👋
“I’ve been down here too long,” funny, coming from a 4’10” man 🤣
Danny DeVito is Great As The Penguin in This Film Huge Danny DeVito Fan Cause Of Batman Returns The Penguin is My #1 Favorite Batman Villain Ever!
3:53 'A lot of tape, and a little patience make all the difference.' Funnily enough one of the 'Worst Case Scenario Handbooks' actually includes that line in the chapter on how to reassemble shredded documents (course in that situation it's assumed they were shredded by accident).
There's a worse case scenario handbook?
Isn't that the same waste that transformed the Joker?
Maybe they renamed the powerplant to ace chemicals.
That's Carl Grissom's company and waste you're referring to.
"That could've come from anywhere." - Max Shreck
Nah its the waste from RoboCop.
Victor Curley no it’s toxic waste that Max Shreck was using.
(I think he wanted to use it to take control of Gotham)
Danny Devito was so ghoulish and scary plus his body makeup fit the role so well. And this meeting is telling with blackmail, political and business corruption as is so common in the world.
"Hi"...lol
"Actually, this is all just a bad dream. You`re home in bed, heavily sedated, resting comfortably ... dying from the carcinogens you personally spewed in a lifetime of profiteering. Tragic irony, or poetic justice? You tell me."
@@pedrosouza3085 "I believe the word you looking for is: aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh" 🤣🤣
This movie was just perfect in every way possible.
I actually sympothize with the penguin in this scene.
Jameson 87 likewise
He was lying though. He was faking every sympathetic emotion to try and trick max
The sad thing is that even though it’s a trick, we do know where the Penguin's motivation and hatred comes from.
You're supposed to. He's a despicable monster, yes, but it wasn't his choice. There was nothing else he could ever have become.
If they bring back the penguin, good ol Danny should play him again
DeVito is so underrated
"I believe the word you're looking for is 'AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!"
"I believe the word your looking for is..AAAAHHHHH!!"
“A batch of toxic waste from your clean textile plant there’s a whole lagoon of this crud at the back”
If ever there was a great application for the *Villain/ Real Villain* memes, it's this movie.
Max's face in the end
Of course Danny Devito is amazing in this role. However I’d love to see another take on the penguin again at some point, just because he’s such a fascinating villain
The DC Universe really missed the boat with the Red Triangle Circus Gang. They should have been incorporated into the expanded universe.
Yes, probably with joker or professor pyg
Or in the Lego Batman movie
1:36 - I wish I had this umbrella
I have it :)
