Have you ever wondered how High End Theaters got great sound? Is it possible to get that same sound in your house? It absolutely is! Come along as we take a look at Klipsch theater speakers and see if we can design something similar. But instead of paying over $6,000 for my speakers, I decided to make my own speakers for around $700 each. Want to make your own? Come see how!

I was very happy to see you using a powermatic mod 66. 60 plus years and still getting the job done. Good video.
Great old tools are something to treasure. I've been wanting to buy a heavy and solid old tablesaw for years. Today's lite weight tin import machines are ............
Dear Toid. Incredible value. I hope that this robot saw will never sneak at you from behind.
In wall speakers next please. Ones that can be placed in wall or on wall if you want to make a thin box. And can be used as ceiling/height channels. One speaker for all surround needs.
That is something I really do want to design.
@Toid Please do. I will build them immediately. I have a ton of ideas. I just don't have the cross-over design for the box dimensions I want.
Yes, 2x6 wall construction loud L.C.R with great klipsch sound would be ideal for me. 17x24 theater room with 12' ceiling.
I have near field speakers that use the Eminence Delta Pro 12A and it's ridiculous how powerful they are, which has any meaningful THD concerns so far down the road from anything reachable in a residential setting. The big Eminence drivers really turn on near reference levels when you can actually see those robust surrounds move. Honestly, if anyone is looking for something more ambient or for lower SPL use, these may not be the drivers for them.
The 12s have ruined me with small speakers. Once you get used to what these can do, it's hard to go back.
15" speakers have always been my sweet spot size for the levels I typically listen at. IMO, they are truer to 'life-sized' sound with regard to scale and presence. It's something I have always been able to sense in the room, even when they are just idling along.
Im digging the techflex and plug, finishing off something that alot of builders leave a bit coarse.
Wow! The bracing is insane.
Trying to go crazy 😜
Very cool build. Without a cnc though I just don’t think I’d have the time to build out that bracing…it would take me forever. 😢
More builds for the everyday folk without a cnc please!
Love the content regardless
I have been building my audio room/theater with Dynaudio Audience speakers. L/C/R and rear surround. Speakers like these make me think about having same speakers for l/c/r and then your smaller Klipsch inspired surrounds. I have Rotel amps that provide 370 per ch…
This project is insane. Great work!
I wish I had the space to accommodate a home theater that these would fit in. Maybe, some day
That is the hard part with builds like these. Not everyone can take advantage of them.
We diyer's are glad to aid in ideas that fit budget and room deminsions from auto to home,,agree?
I design and construct on kitchen table one eye 30% heart no feet. I create short cuts and laugh at quitters. Age 70 ,completed 500+ systems.
Sorta retired. Just got heart stint, back to building , open baffle is ticket to small room Soundstage.
@@Toid Nick, how about a 6" - 8" woofer and horn to stomp on the RP-600 - please. Pretty please! I like my Emotiva T-Zero towers, but there has to be something better that I may be able to afford to build for my budget 5.1.2 surround system. Or, I could use the new speakers in a superb 2.1 system. Thanks and wishing you and yours all the very best, Kevin
Very cool, I love this design
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks - These "Make Better Speakers Than You Can Buy" videos are always great. Appreciate the extra details that show your thought process in the design. Those compression drivers are very impressive, and you were able to get everything out of them. I am sure that Eminence was impressed too. I am glad you two could work together on the project.
You have inspired me to buy your plans and build a pair of these. Although I may redesign with a 12" driver or two. Will be replacing my customised klipsch legends in my HT Already have 4 of your eminence 10" coaxial designs as my atmos speakers in my HT. Thank you.
That’s awesome! Full disclosure I’m actually designing a smaller version using a 12”. So if that is what you are thinking you might want to wait. I haven’t started on it yet, but should be soon.
Nice! Look forward to it. I still need to do the ultimate rca lead video.
@@Toidawesome!
Im in for this - thank you for the hard work!@@Toid
Do you happen to have a list of components used in the crossovers? or will you for the 12" version?
Nice build. I want one of those CNC routers! How hard was it to learn the cad program? Is it sketch up? Thanks for your content btw.
Thank you. They are nice, especially the ball drive. I use sketchup todraw it out. However you still need to import those drawings to a cam program. In this case in use Aspire. The cam programs are not cheap at all. 2d carvings like this aren’t hard to learn, but 3d can be much more difficult. You can actually draw everything as a 2d model in Aspire and cut it out, skip sketchup all together.
Another great compression driver speaker build Toid. I really enjoy these. What is the f3 on the low side?
Eminence is not available in europe? variant dont have Eminence animore...
I wonder about a 16 ohm easy to drive pair? Perhaps a pair of Li Audio's 15" Drivers?
Can you do a tier video on speakers that you've diy'ed?
I´m currenly having a pair of Forte III. I love how rich, dynamic and beautiful they sound at low volumes and with natural instruments, but I don´t like them at all when playing rock and metal because distorted electric guitars sound very thin and radiolike... I have almost convinced myself that I need a pair of "Klipsch KPT-325 Inspired" but I wonder how they sound when playing a low volumes? I can not live with small speakers since I got my Forte III. My livingroom is 750 square foot. Should I go for this build? :)
These would be great for a basement dance club. Considering dance stacks were influenced by cinema stacks. A 200 wpc a/b would do it. 300wpc would be actual dance club loud. Add an extra single 18 or 2 and your set to charge an entry fee.
How is this speakers for olny music. And what do i need to change if i want 2 woffers // Thx Andre
I would love to see this as a 3 way design. Do they make a good dedicated midrange driver?
What happened to the 893's? I figured those would stick around for a while. (Unless that was somebody other than you that built those monsters)
Hey Toid! Would these be able to fill large dedicated theater rooms at reference levels (120db)
Room dimension: 23'w X 35'L X 12'H
I would use 3 of these behind an AT screen.
I was originally gonna go with the diysg Titan 818 because they'd fill my room great (from what others have said) but I'm really liking your impressions on the textreme eminence compression driver. Sounds like it's a much better option than the Celestion used on the Titans.
What's your thoughts on these as opposed to the Titans in a room that size.
Either way I plan on building 4 of your 21" subs to go with it.
I'm also using your Atmos speakers for Atmos.
First, that theater is going to be killer! These would absolutely fill a large dedicated theater room like you have. It really is one of the reasons it is designed. But Full Disclosure, early in 2024 I will have a new design using these textreme drivers that will be an MTM design with 12" woofers. Similar to my Audience 212 design. These should have better off axis than the BTS15, which might be better if you want a wider soundstage. However, I have not completed the design. THis is mainly due to the fact the Textreme drivers are out of stock currently. I will be finishing the design as soon as they come back in stock. Just food for thought, if you want to see what I come up with before deciding. Either way, you are going to ave a killer setup!
@@Toid yeah I saw where you're working on a 12" version of these and my plan was to use those for all my surrounds if I went with the BTS 15's up front, that way my entire bed layer would have the same sound signature, which is important for me.
Thanks for all the work you do in designing these speakers, it allows us mere mortals to have end Game theaters without selling a kidney!!
@@Toid one other quick question, how difficult would it be to change the driver to an 18? Do you have to completely rework the crossover, or just make minor changes? Or what about changing it to dual 15's or dual 18's?
Curious about the combination with the subs. Do you high-pass the woofers, or do anything to match the sub responses with the woofers?
Great question. Those are two 21” subs sealed. So no high pass necessary. The mains are crossed over with the subs. For home theater I allow my mains to play to 60hz for a little more mid bass, but since would highpass them sooner.
How would 3 of these work with the cinema 10 speakers doing side and rears? I love these and my room is 17x24 with 12' ceilings. I want all diy speakers, but i already bought 2 of the new 16" in klipch subs. I would greatly appreciate your help. Thank you! Greg
@@gjohnston01 that’s exactly what I’m using. It sounds great!
Awesome! I wish you sold flat packs at least for the front three. The other ones seem easy enough and I'm not sure if I should build 4 or 6 of them.
Would you mind sharing why you chose such a high power woofer? For an auditorium they'd be great but it seems like a bit of overkill for home right? Plus they're expensive, compared to lower power options? Great video, thanks.
You could go with a lower pair for sure. But these will make sure you ahve plenty of headroom and in general, ones that can handle higher power have lower distortion when playing at the power levels we would use. Meaning in theory it should be a cleaner sound from the woofer.
Impressive project, thanks!!
May I ask if those Klipsch inspired speakers are better than those you made when you "copied" the JTR Noesis dual 12inch speakers? Are there differences when it comes to sound quality and SPL capabilities?
It’s a good question. In my opinion, these are a significant upgrade. Either will get you the SPL needed, but these are more dynamic and more transparent. A lot of it comes down to the textreme driver. It really has an unbelievable sound signature. Is definitely the best compression driver I’ve used
What is required to drive these? What would you recommend for a center channel, surrounds and sub to go with these? I am in the process of starting a home theater build and I want a nice clean 5.1 setup without spending insane money.
Great questions. I’m actually designing a center channel and surrounds using the same pain compression driver and horn in the surrounds but using a smaller 12 inch subwoofer. For the center channel in making an MTM using the same 12 inch drivers and same compression driver, but will be using a little bit different of a horn to maximize dispersion for the center channel. That MTM will actually be able to be either a horizontal or vertical. That means you technically could use it as front and center if you wanted to.
As far as driving them, they are very efficient, so you don’t actually need anything more than just a surround sound receiver. But if you want it better amplifier, then I would take a look at Buckeye amps. They have some really nice amps for great prices. And as far as subwoofers, that’s really up to you. I’m using my earthquake 21s with these, and it seems to be a very nice blind.
How low can they go +/- 2 db?
Very good build, not for me, I like duo 18's and 8in 3way towers mids are duo 2 in and planer tweeters. 72 hz hi pass ,diy air core 12 db 800,4k xover.😊 I live next to graveyard, neighbors love system ..
Do you got the plan build for this setup?
Hello, what cnc do you use? I’d like to invest in one. Thank you.
I use a CNC4NEWBIE
@@Toid thanks for the quick response! You’re the best.
One more question if you have time. What would you suggest from your project library for a living room theater system for us with a smaller living room? I only have a Denon TX-RZ50 to drive speakers with. Thank you.
Nvm just see your list on your website. Still, can a regular surround sound receiver power these? Like the Denon RZ50? Thanks
@@abelcanahui3459 yes. Something like the Onkyo RZ50 or the Denon x3800h would work. The Denon has the more Dirac options, but in the end well cost more for those
One cool effect to try with Duratex is to use a scrunched up plastic shopping bag and tap all over the paint while it's wet. It gives a neat leather-like texture and really hides imperfections.
I’m definitely going to have to try that! Thank you for the tip!
Nice build, and congrats to you! A challenge for you.... A high sensitivity 2 way big horn and 15" that play down to 30-35Hz? Man, that would be my ideal speaker. Thanks for what you do!
Amazing video Mr. Toid, thank you for all the effort you put into these videos for us viewers
Thank you, I really appreciate it
You're right about high sensitivity. I'm using Bill Fitzmaurice Omnitop 12 (which take some padding with the 28 band EQ) and they scream the place down with an SMSL SA98E. Even the amplifier in a pringles can speaker get them more than loud enough. The bass woofers I have complementing them need more power to get loud but that's expected. They can still pump pretty hard off the SMSL - loud enough for my landlord's girlfriend to ask me to turn it down from over the road. I do miss having the Peavey IPR1600 hooked up, especially now I have the subwoofers in their loudest position - downfiring into the floor (8 inch gap) in the front left corner.
Should have used the 3015 lf
I have been waiting for this one! Amazing work once again. Would love to see some demos or shorts with these in action. Plus some measurements or additional content based around these and your home theater setup. Thanks for providing this to the community!
Great ideas
@@Toid you're clearly not running low on ideas, but thank you!
Cats dogs or birds are loved to be seen on any video. But that bunny took the cake. Blended in with the speaker.
Wife acceptance factor is huge. I'll consider these even more. Cheers
Id like to see a classic looking speaker with modern drivers .
I am not big into the modern look .
Holy window braces 😉 nice 👌 craftsmanship. Those look solid as f' 👌 😮
Now you're talking! Go big or go home. Xmax is a poor substitute for Sd just as a broomstick is a poor substitute for a canoe paddle. If it were not for the depth issue, I'd be bugging you to build LaScala folded horn midwoofer cabinets to extend the full-throated horn goodness down the spectrum. Horn midbass is awe-inspiring.
Did you see that rabbit?
I was waiting for someone to comment on him. Before I put the drivers in, he went in and sat on the rock wool. Made the box his home.
Great video bud! Love the design. Still jelly of that CNC... 😅
It was pretty easy to make better klipsch than the original model 1 and 2. Klipsch used outsourced drivers. You can get better drivers than they used. klipsch polymer diaphragm tweeters were harsh. The woofers were not as good as others you can buy. You can also easily make a better crossover than klipsch used, older klipsch had cheap crossovers. They also didn't brace, and had little insulation/damping inside.
Which amplifier would you use for this setup?
I have used both the Orchard Audio Starkrimson and just my Home Theater Receiver. Both handle these with ease.
9:42 owwwwn so cute!!!
The bracing reminds me of the early B&W Matrix bracing on their reference studio monitors.
In your article about the "Best DIY Speaker by Use", and they ranked in each category? You have 6 projects listed for 2 channel audio - which is the "best of the best"?
I should have elaborated. They are in order top to bottom on my thoughts. The one at the top of the list is ranked first. However, it’s not quite cut and dry. I love the soundstage 15’s but they are huge. If you want smaller or don’t like compression drivers, the Epic HiFi would be a better choice.
Would love to see the internal wiring and amp hookup / final EQ and possible recommendations for matching surround sound drivers.
You’re in luck. I’m actually going to be building a smaller version soon that should with great for surround and center. The plans show the hookups.
@@Toidwhere are you on that?
@@Stan_the_Belgian I just called about the horns today. They were on backorder they’re supposed to be in sometime this month. I’m still waiting back to hear from them. The compression driver said it’s going to be in in January. But I might be able to get the video out using one of the compression drivers from these
Greetings, love your videos and speaker builds! I was wondering if you could design a speaker that matches IMAX speaker standards if possible.
Keep up the awesome work!
Take a look at the Krix mx-40 wall of sound. Then build that! Great video mate.
That is actually something I would like to do some time. Thanks for the suggestion.
Toid, looking forward to the new speaker design you mentioned improving on this design. Any update as to when you will be releasing it?
Great job on the build. Really enjoyed this video.
for strictly movies, how would these compare to the audience 212?
Wish you'd include more finished b-roll. & not at the end where it gets covered with thumbnails.
These seem like another knockout! Is there any chance you could do a spinorama for these?
I need to setup something more permanent that can get good data that can easily be used as a standard for all my builds. I appreciate it
@@ToidMakes sense to me. It's a lot of time consuming work if you don't have a more permanent measurement rig built for that.
@@Toid Nick, send your builds to Erin's Audio Corner. He'd be glad to measure anything for you.
@@welderfixer we’ve been talking about it. Hopefully in the future we can
@@Toid Awesome! You're the best.
I already built the Audience 212 and love them. Might have to build these some day as well, nice.
Glad to hear it!
Quality video as usual!!
I been eager see this video. I'm wanting plan speakers to use in a small room with my class a el34 tube amp!!!!!
That sounds really nice!!!
@@Toid just how sensitive are they? 98db or 101db ? I'm guessing
@@paulgood2218 in room is probably around 97-99. But that is just a guess as I didn’t measure it.
Please try to make a diy krix mx series behind the screen array.
I need to build a theater soon. I see emotiva has a reasonable processor now. Would you recommend that. Or just get a receiver from them or one of the other 3 big names.
Diy is my game in general but a processor/receiver with hdmi is up to consumer goods only, not diy.
I have to say for health and belly blowing away. fasting, OMAD or two meals a day. Never seed oils ever again, EVER EVER. Eat butter and meat, some homemade carbs if you need them. Saturated fat and high salt intake is better for you. Beer/wine is good but in moderation. Exercise like walking for an hour a day. I've been there and had suffered for 10 years. Lift weight if you like. Just 10 min a day, no more. No long runs, just sprint. Find what you like.
Love the channel and will diy some speakers some day. Kids are consuming the free time and love it. Maybe after they leave the house.
Or rather have them help. Muahahahahahahah
I’m not real familiar with a emotiva processors. Having said that I don’t believe they do Dirac, so I would probably go towards something like the monolith or an anthem. Or if you’re on a budget, I would probably consider doing something like the Denon 3800. All of these are upgradable for direct, which is currently the best room correction software on the market. The den and 3800 is an AVR, but it does have RCA pre-out so you can hook up whatever amplifier(s) you want to it.
No personal interest in a dedicated HT speaker but very cool build. I doubt the Klipsch has half of that bracing, lol. It would be interesting to try to take on a Klipsch Heritage design with similar drivers from Eminence (or similar), I think that would have a bit more appeal and versatility.
I was thinking a Cornwall...
I wish eminance would be sold in eu. I really love their coaxial drivers
Yeah I could not find the N314x for sale in Europe. There are suppliers who do sell Eminence, but I do not know if they can get everything out are limited to what they have on stock.
I spoke with Eminence add they said they can ship worldwide and get you in contact with whom you need. Just email them
@@ToidOo thats awesome, thank you for letting me know!
What kind of MDF are you using ? I have never seen such nice MDF at my local lumber yards. I CNC a lot of projects and maybe I need to special order some. Thanks ! Great Channel !
Just stuff I got from my local lumber yard. Nothing special. Thank you for the kind words. I wish I could be of more help.
Knocked it outta the park again with this one. I’ve been waiting on this video since I watched your Textreme video and it didn’t disappoint. Question for you though, sounds like you like these more than the soundstage 15s. I’ve wanted to buy the plans for that because I wanted a speaker that had a wide soundstage. But now I’m debating whether these are the better choice for home theater 🤔. From your impressions it sounds like this one sounds better overall. Was the sound stage at least decent in these? And would you pick these over the 15s?
Honestly, I love both of those speakers. You couldn’t go wrong with either one of them. The soundstage 15 does have a much wider dispersion, then these. So, if you are really into why dispersion speakers, the soundstage 15 and cinema 10 are the best. These do you have a very unique sound signature that I really enjoy. But you aren’t going to get as wide of a soundstage.
I have always had decent luck 👌 with custom setups 🙏💖 I would do 2 12's c.o. @ 800-1kish. Just a 12 guy 👦 lol 😆 Thanks for your inspiration Toid 👍😎
That would be a cool idea. Like an mtm with dual 12’s
Exactly the build I was considering before picking up old Epic CF-3s. Great to hear low-crossed textremes in efficient 2-way really are this good.
Yeah, I was really shocked. Then I talked to others in the field, ie competitors of Eminence, and all of them gave them very high praise. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen that before.
Can you help me with a guestion on port length ??
I’ve got a diy challenge for you, if you choose to accept it…Klipsch The Sevens inspiration
I felt a little like atom Cruise in the original Mission Impossible when you said that. “The mission, if you choose to accept it….” Thank you for the idea
great video, what is the software you use to design these enclosures send to the CNC, also do you have a link to the mfg of the CNC table? thanks
I used Sketchup to design it in 3D. The CNC is by a manufacturer called CNC4Newbie located in Canada
Where's the sound deadener??
Would you sell the flat pack ?
Those Textreme compression drivers are game changers. Well done!
Shawn, they really are awesome! I’m really happy with them
Where did you buy the Eminence H14EA horn? For the life of me I can't find it for sale anywhere. Why on earth Parts Express doesn't carry it is mystifying.
You can still get it from eminence. But I completely agree. The crazy thing is Parts Express did sell it and then stopped. However once they got bought by B&C I started seeing Parts Express carrying more Eminence products . So maybe they’ll get it back. Another place to check is US speaker. Even if they don’t have it, they can usually get it.
@@Toid
Thanks! I checked US Speaker and they sell it.
Your starting statement is "I'm always lookking for inspiration" .... My starting statement would be .... "I'm always looking for something like this from toids diy audio" 😅😅😅😅 great video again !!! ❤❤
Absolutely epic quality on the video and the build!
Thank you!
9:43 Should we nickname these speakers "The Rabbit Ears"? 😏🐇
Bunny 😊
Somehow I missed the notification when this video hit and I’m just now seeing it. I’ve had a pair of these compression drivers for a few months now since I saw your first video about them. Can’t wait to build these, however the link to buy the plans is broken.
Thank you. I’ll fix it later tonight. I switched over the website last night and it looks like the plans didn’t switch over. I’ll make sure to fix that.
It is fixed. Thank you for the heads up: toidsdiyaudio.com/product/bts15/
How do you compare these to the audience 212? Especially the compression driver.
I like these more. Haven’t heard a compression driver that sounds as good as this one yet. Currently, these are the ones in my theater room. I actually took down the audience 212. Both are great buildings, and it really depends on what you’re looking for.
Miau
Was just about to purchase plans but it doesn't say if CNC files are included.
Email me
wait so how do we build these?
The complete build plans are in the description of the video
If you’re building your own speakers I would wire drive units directly to separate binding posts.
Active.
Use a studio DSP ($200 - $2000+)
No passive crossover required.
Two (stereo) power amps, or four mono.
You can control all crossover points, EQ, time-alignment and gain from the DSP.
Hey man!! Love your work! Looking to do diy outdoor loudspeakers and subs that you plug xlr cables into. For live audio for small/medium sized stages. Any recommendations?????
Cool and unique, hmmm. I pulled the drivers out of a 1960's Magnavox Astrosonic console. How good could thise be with your modern tech? I'd send them to you and pay for materials just to see what you could do. 15 inch woofers and horn tweeters are like new! What do you think? Large bookshelves maybe?
Your shops vacuum setup sucks, literally! I would die to have your HVAC set-up. The CNC machine would be nice to have as well! I do have a cabinet shop in town who assist me with the MDF (cut sheets) I need for my builds, for a nominal fee that is. Well worth it!
Is your list for the best 2 channel speakers be rated in order, being that the Soundstage 15 is still your number one pick? I can see that as it uses a smaller, thus lighter - faster compression driver. Do your speaker plans include the CNC programming? Thanks.
They are to be rated in order as best first and so on. The only plans, I have listed with the DXF files is the Rule Breaker, but I could create a custom onecgorv you for the soundstage 15. I just charge $10 for the DXF files which is what is needed for your cnc program. Let me know if you want to do that, just email me at sales@toidsdiyaudio.com
@@Toid Thanks for the reply. Can you share what you are hearing between this KPT clone and the soundstage 15 to make the soundstage be a better audiophile speaker? Thanks
@@rvaillant I'll try my best. But one of the things that I look for is a speaker that can really envelop the listener with a very wide soundstage. The type of horn/waveguide used on the Soundstage 15 allows for the wider dispersion. Having said that, I really love how relaxed these speakers are. I could listen to the BTS 15 all day without fatigue, which is hard to say about many speakers. Honestly, you couldn't go wrong with either. but if you want the wider dispersion, the soundstage 15 is better. if that is not as important to you, then the BTS 15 have a very relaxed, distortion free sound that I really enjoy.
I wonder how they compare to jbl theater speakers but I assume they are worse I meant the klipsches not diy
These are legit. I wish I had some JBL on hand to compare them side by side. I would assume the JBL will not have as flat of a response as these, as they are designed around the use of DSP in a theater setting. Of course that’s easy enough to add.
@@Toidsorry I forgot to clarify I meant those cinema klipsches that are worse not diys. I know those diys play better
@@wadimek116 🤦♂️ ah that makes sense, lol. I should have caught that
This was kick ass. New to your channel.
Great work....
Is all that bracing really necessary tho?
It helps keep the cabinet from resonating and helps break up standing waves. You could build it differently, but it may not sound as good in the end.
Hi! Which cnc machine are you using
Cnc4newbie
How big of a space would be ideal for a pair of these?
i'm here for the bunny
ok and the massive speakers, i love those too
BUNNY ALERT AT 9:45 LETS GOOOO!
I’m adding these compression drivers to my list. Do you think they need a tweeter as well? Do you have any in room response graphs?
I don't think it needs one. If you look at the measurement, it is +/-3db to around 17khz. It does start to go down after 12Khz, but that can easily be EQ'd up.
You can always sell your Klipsch …..you can’t resell😅 these
If one can listen in person, or have any idea what the raw components are capable of doing one would buy these
@@michaeltaylors2456 true indeed. I made pair of speakers and would never dream of selling them .
How low they go ?
I love this dude 😂
Is the characteristic roll-off between 10K and 20K for a 1.4" exit compression driver an issue? I have been extremely curious about the TeXtreme CD but only have experience with poly diaphragm 1" exit CDs and have wondered if a super tweeter might be necessary with the TeXreme.
This started to roll off around 12Khz, but was relatively well behaved and subtle. Making EQing the high end not an issue.
