I understand that you don’t want color in your home but as a designer, please give your audience design ideas if they DO want color (jewel tones, etc.) in their homes. I believe there is a way to incorporate colors into a home while maintaining high style…even the dreaded peach. Just saying.

This. There are some thing that just look bad...I get if someone says NO to them. And there are things which may not be our design style but they still look good in other people's home. I felt like this video was more about her own personal style and everything else is just bad, regardless.

      @toosense 2 місяці тому +17

Of course this video was about her personal style, hence the title, all her regular viewers know she styles in neutrals. If you want videos full of jewel tones I’m sure there are plenty of other channels to choose from.

    •  2 місяці тому +4

You should browse through her channel, she does talk about ways to incorporate color for those who want that. In one of her paint videos she shows examples and ways to incorporate colors without overwhelming like through textiles, paint etc. Hope that helps! ❤

I so appreciate your honesty here, and bringing ‘home’ how the idea is to do what you Are Now and what truly makes YOU feel good in your home. I’ve always admired your design, never found it too ANYthing. But rich, intelligent and warm. But I like how you know not everyone will want the same. I oops, did buy two salmon pillows six months ago and liked what they did on the couch, but your frankness here was STILL super refreshing to me and really fun to know ❤

      My rules are:
'Architecture' - so walls, floors, ceilings, kitchens, bathrooms should be traditional and characterful or completely blank if you are going for modernism.
'Big Ticket Items'- Sofas, Beds, Chests etc should be neutral
Swap outs- 'Accent chairs, rugs, mirrors, Decor can go wild and show personality.
Anything hard to remove or expensive should not be trendy for most people.

I did all of the bright colors like yellow, pink/peach and jewel tones in my 20's and I always found myself changing it after a yr or two. It never felt like me. Once I bought my house I started doing more neutrals with the occasional navy or dark green and I feel so much more cozy and comfortable. I love color but I found it was too overwhelming so I absolutely love your channel and style.

This video was great! I keep thinking I “should” want the minimal, white, beige kind of look. But then I see a pic that shows a gorgeous emerald green velvet couch and immediately think THAT is what I want. 😊 I’m with you on the florals and peach for sure!

I think you hit it on the head - creating your home should be about what brings you joy. After living with neutral decor for years because I didn't want to offend others...I finally accepted my love of color and am actively remodeling my home trying to inject color, pattern and wood tones in my spaces....bold colors, jewel tones and eclectic patterns bring me joy/energy. I love figuring out how to use color and patterns to empower but not over power a space. Yet, I drool when I see Valentina's home and use of neutral colors and sometimes wish I could create a parallel living space lol. My home may end up not being everyone's cup of tea but it makes me smile and that's what it's all about doing what you love joyfully and tastefully.

“Peach is just eughhhh…” is SO accurate 🤣 I see tons of folks recommending it in interior design Reddit and I make the exact same sounds. Also yes with the jewel tones and florals! They feel heavy and “suffocating”, it leaves no room to expand on.

I feel so guilty about florals, too. Want to love them, be playful and feminine but it's not my style. As beautiful as they are, I get tired of them and their randomness. Prefer florals in small doses in a blouse, dress or coaster rather than in my home.
My style is mostly structured and geometric, stripes, herringbone, trellis pattern etc

Valentina, you are 16:58 more inclined to neoclassical, with a modern twist, based on what you like 😊. I also like structure, symmetry, and balance on my surroundings. I would not mind living in Villa Ephrussi with all its pinkish/ peachy marbles and the breathtaking views of the French Riviera😀😉! Not all colors look good in every space, the architecture, the light and the exposure to the outdoors are essential to create the right effect. Thank you Valentina!

I’m always telling people about your channel. I’m like, “There’s this designer I can’t get enough of because she lived abroad and then moved back, and you can see how her travels inform her style; you just want to stare at her home!” 😂❤ I’d love a video that dives even deeper into how to know what your style really is. Sometimes I feel like I need to just buy a bunch of doll houses that I can decorate different ways, lol. Right now my apartment is in the same state as my mind-just kind of unclear about the next season of life. Like you mentioned, there are styles I see that I feel like people would say are me, and that I’m drawn to, yet while it looks pretty in a book or photo, I know it’d feel messy in my place. Like shabby chic and even the book “Return to Pretty,” which is a more structured shabby chic style in my mind-looks so charming on the page, but when I tried to bring in ornate vases, I didn’t feel more upscale, I felt like I was among my grandma’s hand-me-downs or something. I want an apartment that says I’m an adult professional but that still has a touch of chic-a bachelorette pad that’s both refined and fun…but not yet the Shea McGee family style. I love her design, but I’m not ready for blanket ladders and baskets…and I even struggle with the pampas grass trend. I keep taking it out and putting it back in, like WHO AM I? 😂

*Authentic Style and Color Palette* . At 57, I have been through many iterations of style and colors, though they have all had common threads. Mine are; rustic cottage, a bit of vintage, a neutral base for staple large pieces, earthy color palette, a more masculine vibe with touches of feminine, no visual clutter, thoughtful vignettes to create a cohesive look. I strive for a vibe that is warm, casual and cozy. I enjoy seasonal re-freshes, and have narrowed down color palettes for each. Natural elements are my go-to. I'm dark and moody for Autumn/Winter, light and airy for Spring/Summer. I quick swap of textiles, decor objects and arrangements and I have a whole new look without re-inventing the wheel or breaking the bank.

OMG! I am so with you on this. I struggled for so many years trying to get color in my home, and things always ended up at a garage sale. My home is "modern hotel" and is black, white, and gray. I love it and all who enter my home say it is gorgeous. Even fresh flowers are white.I don't plan on ever changing. Thanks for the video. I think it may help people to decide what they really love, and the heck with all the "trends"

Haha. I don’t like trends but I tell people their home is beautiful. What else can I say. My friend redid her home in grays. I gushed. I hate gray. Don’t worry about what people say - we lie to spare feelings and I love that she loves the gray. Decorate with what
You love and be happy with that. I hate neutrals - for me it’s boring and depressing and that’s ok. I like seeing styles even if I wouldn’t live with them

I'm obsessed with jewel tones (just pops of them in a neutral space), the way they do it in projects from the Local Project. But... I hate trends, so I have a few, but mainly in paintings and little accents in my otherwise beige, wood and 'Plants' colored space lol. :)

I think the problem with contemporary jewel and/or peach toned interior is the materials - too much shine! Think about how colorful the Amanjena Hotel in Morocco was, but it's dusty and muted and natural materials. That's how you do color!

One of the most tastefully decorated apartments ever seen was actually a famous movie set. The movie, Indiscreet, starring Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant, featured her apartment with colorful art, lamps, fabrics. It was kind of unusual for the time and caught everyone’s attention. It’s a great film, so if you have not seen it check it out and really study that decor. It was the right way to incorporate color in a tasteful way. Your POV in this post is spot on, Valentina. Happy Palm Sunday, btw.

I have two units under one roof. In the mid century modern side, it’s more like your style - black, white and green. It’s got a cathedral ceiling and an open concept.
The OTHER side is a 1944 cottage. In the living room I went with Antique Tin, a dark gray; in the bath Le Luxe, a dark gray-green, and in the bedroom, Black Sapphire and Tanzanite, dark jewel tones that will be accented with brighter tones, in a more exotic feel. But I can only do them in small places, not an entire house. The back room is going to feel like a small cocoon of rich colors. I can have several different moods under one roof, because I have two units, each with distinct feelings and decor.

But in last 3yrs I’ve spent a long time looking and exploring my style, what won’t date, what resonates with me and my family. I love the modern transitional style which leans a little the minimal look. I don’t like visual clutter and I like simplicity but structure. I love the black and white theme. However, we never decided to “afford” to switch out the peach tile in our powder bath. I decorated around it, and now, I have been tickled that it is “trending”. I will embrace it, likely forever, now. I have told myself it is “interesting”…ha!

So glad for this video 👏🏼 Always thought that trends do not define our style. They are just made to sell and people fall for it. Be true to what you like and as Valentina said, add a pillow or a piece of art or a vase to maybe introduce some color or some change in your decor. I love your style. That’s how my previous place was decorated and how I’m doing my new one. And everybody loved my apartment! Can’t wait to finish the new one.

Yours is the only decor channel I follow;which may seem odd as my decor style is almost dire or opposite to yours ! I’ve had and loved jewel ones sofas and love seats , cushions , peachy ,mandarins yellow, York green and French blue walls , blue and white Delft inspired kitchens !!! And yet your approach has really helped me focus and become more confident in my style . I ve learned that bringing in your approach only helps accentuates the look I’m going after . The high end , black and white , clean lines minimalistic look you so easily pull together is wonderful, your ability to explain throughly how and why you have done what you did is fabulous ! I enjoy and look forward to your commentaries and advice and always think where can I apply this like you advice on simply easy changes that make an impact ie: One simple thing was the kitchen soap dispenser , larger simpler plant and table arrangements , using luxury materials in one big statement , like the off white velvet drapes for my living room I am looking forward to putting up. So thanks for your inspiration, advice, and cheerful disposition ( every time ! )

Thank you for the validation! I began to love high contrast, especially black-and-white as a young teen while watching a Coco Chanel documentary. I fought against an all black and white house for many years because I felt it might “too much.” But now in my new home, it is all black-and-white, and it makes me so happy! I’m not going back to colors of the year or beige and grey. 😅

When i was in my 20s,30s I did soft pastels. I had kid's then did a bit brighter. I liked Boho style then. I do now also but, not so many patterns and colors. I love black, greys, greens and lavender/lilac. Lots of wood and plants. I might get a certain color palette for a holiday but, certainly not red! I do buy real flowers for my kitchen island and its been only a few select colors i like. Also, I decorate with crystals, fossils, bugs, birds and plants. Its what I like and have scince i was a child. It makes me happy.🥰💜💜💜💜💜🩵

I love color and I am with you on the colored grout. The peach is hideous too. However, I would like to see more diversity in your design. Show some examples of how one could incorporate the trends in a way that is not overpowering. After many years I changed out my brown leather sofa in the living room for a midnight blue sofa. If it were velvet it would look very jewel tone, but it is in leather which mutes the color a bit and it looks more modern. I will probably keep it for 20 years regardless of trends.

I love your black fireplace, don’t ever change the colour of it, I wish I had a giant fireplace wall that I could paint it black but our home is a one story home and where I have my fireplace, painting the wall black wouldn’t work for me but I love neutral tones with a little colour in my decor pieces and that being mostly black vases with just greenery, I’ve taken away all my fake flowers and replaced my vases with greenery from my garden, we’re about to redo our outdoor area the same, mostly it will be symmetrical with the pots and plants I choose and the rocks they’ll be sitting on in our alfresco area, we have two sections I’m working on for our outdoor areas, living here in Australia, we spend most of our time outdoors and hardly ever entertain inside. Great video as always V. 🖤🩶🤍☕️🌞☀️

I so agree. I have tried the bold colours and I too get rid of them..... black white and grey. I will the colour in artwork that I love and maybe a few pillows.... but even the pillows are a darker blue like a navy LOL I have realized that I am more comfortable in a more neutral space, although I can not get on the beige, camel trends. I like it just does not feel like me at all.

I’m 70 and a few years ago I bought a navy blue batik king quilt for my bedroom. It’s very unlike me but I love it. I’m still a work in progress getting things to go with it, but I still love it. No more florals for me. It’s my space and I can choose whatever I like. I love your living room. I see the black, white and green in it. It’s not me but it’s very nicely decorated. I think I inherited too much traditional furniture and suffer from guilt if I got rid of it. Love your style.

Peach.. no! It reminds me of the Golden Girls... Experiment and have fun with the textiles.. Not in furniture or on the walls! 😅 I do actually have a chair in a deep purple velvet fabric. It is beautiful. I bought the chair 20+ years ago, it cost me a months wages! Classic chair with dark oak legs, and brass wheels on the front legs. It was in a tartan wool mulberry fabric, it got so worn it had holes in it, got it professionally upholstered in the deep velvet fabric from Designers Guild. It is so pretty, but at the moment it is a jewel in my bedroom. Maybe I should get it upholstered again, or just let it be, the cat loves it!

Oh my goodness, Valentina, you are that friend every girl wants to go to brunch with, to grab a drink with. Such a breath of fresh air. ❤ my custom build is coming to the part of paint. We are going with farrow and ball drop cloth for the entire house (color drenched) except our master suite with includes the dressing room/closet and laundry room. The ensuite is bookmatched travertine floor to 12ft ceiling. The master will be sherwin Williams pewter green. After you say the jewel tones will feel heavy, im getting hesitant. I decided to do it dark after seeing your dark bedroom. Please make it make sense and tell me itll look great. The large windows are east facing. Either itll be pewter or drop cloth if you say i may get tired of it in a year or two. Im using your color palette pdf. So the furniture will be the cream with accents of tan/caramel, greens and black throughout. Eagerly waiting for a response.

When I read Mark Sikes' "Beautiful" book, I realized that I love traditional design, pattern, wallpaper, blue and white porcelains, and antique/vintage pieces. Yup. I had thought my style was Early Home Goods, which I later found out is called transitional. LOL That's why I suggest people invest in (or borrow from a library) some design books. It's not the same as browsing online. You learn not just how they different styles look, but whether the sensibility behind them speaks to you. You can decide "is this something I'd enjoy shopping for?" because shopping for your home should be enjoyable or you won't make the effort.

Our grout is dark gray [was definitely nodding with you, V! 😆]. Our tropical industrial deco is bright white walls and taupe-y gray and white upholstery, and has pops of turquoise and red shades in accents like rugs, pillows, art pieces. And we've added greenery and neutral wood tones to bridge the contrast and make it. look a little richer than that Y2K teal and red style. I don't know that I can do the jewel tones in large format. In the dining room I went more subtle with the colors and got a rug with aqua, taupe and peach. That was enough peach for me, but I'm glad that I'm now trending! Lol

Cheers from Los Angeles Valentina! I just paused the video during the 'bold color' topic. I absolutely love your black and white living room. I would love love love to have our living room white along with painting the fireplace mantel and adjacent built-in shelves black but my dilemma is that it is a 'dark room'. That room gets morning sun which is wonderful but we have a wide porch (like a Americana/Cape Cod style) which shades the room. It's probably a bad idea, right? I'm ready to change up our living room but can't decide what to do 'paint' wise other than just all white walls and accents. anyway, back to your video! You always inspire me!!! xoxo
