I used to just wing it and im lucky because my income is decent BUT now i see the thousand bucks per month in dining out. Easy to cut that when you see it on a screen
Several years ago I watched a UA-cam video about doing a “no buy year”. Which meant only buying replacement items you use up, things that were broken, needed for a job, medications, etc. absolute NO clothes, books, fancy coffees, decor items, etc. I thought it would be hard, but it was so easy. If I went into a store knowing already I could not emotionally purchase I felt no temptation even to look at all. I just grabbed the dish soap or paper towels and out I went. I saved so much money it was amazing. And I feel so good about myself. I also took the year to go through my house and get rid of stuff I didn’t need or want, so my house is uncluttered, my finances are better and I am so happy. I love watching this show because even in retirement it keeps me focused and on track financially.
I often do a no buy month. I asked my husband to come up with a dollar amt to save for every day we don’t spend, he decided on $7 per 'no spend day'. We've saved $63 this month so far. It's not hard to not spend. We gamify it so it's fun.
He makes the majority of the money and he probably isn’t chipping in for household items. I also suspect that $8,400 is their gross pay. If their finances are not combined, it’s hard to budget and plan for every dollar.
I disagree that you should prioritize buying food before paying rent. There are a lot of food assistance resources available for low income people (SNAP, food banks, WIC, etc.), however rent assistance is much harder to get. Pay your rent first , then figure out food. It doesnt do you much good to have a full cart of groceries if you dont have a pantry to put them in.
I agree with this. Shelter is priority number one for me. I’ve been in rough spots and my rent was always paid on time. In those times I would find loose change to buy a 1$ burger. That worked out well for me.
AND, when they are already begind like this, COMMUNICATE with landlord, admit your mistake, agree on a plan, and pay as much as possible every paycheck until the rent is caught up. The worst thing is to say nothing to the landlord when you are behind because they will just assume you're never going to pay again and it's eviction time.
The point is to eat (a requirement for life) before you worry about your rent because you can take a month or two (or more) to fix that but you can't go that long without food before it affects your behavior and will. If you go to a place for food donations you're still prioritizing food but dave doesn't promote welfare for people who make 8k a month
Some of the other personalities on the show are still having trouble "feeling" their way into the call. Dave has so much experience and intuition about what's actually going on when people call in. It's really amazing actually. Some other calls I have listened to, I think one thing and Dave goes another direction and come to find out, he nails it. Awesome stuff.
I love my budget, my spreadsheet where I can see everything I spent. It’s like a game for me stick to it and it’s kind of fun. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything. Taking care of my future self is a better feeing than any vacation or shopping spree.
There’s a reason why the show is called the “Dave Ramsey” show because no matter what any other show host here says Dave sees through the fluff and asks the right questions.
This is the PERFECT example of where Dave’s straight talking can instantaneously make a world of difference. This lady’s home earns well and don’t even have that much debt, they just need to be disciplined and stick to a budget and within two months they’re back on track. Within a year they could be debt free and increase their lifestyle if they so choose to.
@@genxx2724 what are your thoughts on this: men arent allowed to. If they give a stern talking to their wife, girlfriend, kids, then theyre seen as abusive or controlling. I cant speak much as im in my 20s but it seems thats more what its about than anything to me
@14:26 my husband grew in poverty in an extremely abusive household so he never learned anything about finance until meeting me. He was very smart though and never had a single debt until we bought a house together (unfortunately relying on only my credit score, but he did contribute a huge chunk of the downpayment). This point in the video Dave makes a really good point about how people don't make good decisions, especially not good financial ones, when they are stressed and in crisis mode, and because my husband lived the first 20 years of his life like that, it's very hard to get him to talk about finances. He's great about saving and paying down debt, he's all on board with that, but man is it like pulling teeth to try and get him to open an RRSP.
I am in adjusting and updating our budget just about every day. When something changes (new, removed, updated $ amount) then I adjust the budget for each month for the rest of the year. We are doing very well financially now but there were times years ago when we weren't. How much money we have, what we owe, etc is very important to me.
My brother tried to give me your book when it first came out & I never read it but now I'm a big fan. Still never read the book but know the baby steps.
Being paid once a month I’ve always prioritised my mortgage payment first, then utilities and then food. After that are phone and internet along with transportation and insurance costs. Everything else are not necessities but extra spending.
This proves Dave is superior to all these clueless hosts. Calling people out in a way the others are scared to. And they have no life experience compared to him.
I agree with the four walls but the order is different for me. Number 1 is always shelter. There’s no point having utilities if you don’t have a house. Food for me is number four, I got plenty of body weight where I can easily miss a meal or two.
They are so right about so many things. Financial responsibility. Live below your means. Pay necessities. No luxuries. Save and invest. Budget so you know where your money is going. And cable isn't a utility. You can solve your financial problems in a few months if you really work on it. So doable.
I wish they asked her if she and her husband have children. It's unbelievable how much people spend to make their kids "happy". Not saying this is their case, but I have family members who go over the top when it comes to their kids.
One of them spends on something stupid, the other one goes and spends more on something stupid "to get even". This is what it is, most likely. They won't change.
Sounds like she’s the spender if she’s going to divorce over not sharing money. Sounds like she wants him to help her and he knows she is a terrible spender
All it takes to get behind like this while having a great income is to be an impulse buyer. Habits like eating out every day, sometimes more than once a day will rack spending up rapidly.
I get when people get behind on bills, especially when unexpected bills pop up. But this…this is ridiculous. If they paid their fixed expenses, including rent, it would leave them with 5k a month, but they’re defaulting on their car payments and medical bills?!? How do you go through 2/3rds of your income on discretionary spending and then even dip into your bill money to get behind like this? I can’t even imagine the mindset. No matter how bad with my budget I got, I ALWAYS paid my rent, car payments, utilities, etc…first.
We take home $10k per month and our mortgage is $900. We SOOO want a bigger home but can't swallow when we consider going up in mortgage from $900 to $2700. That's hard.
they aren't paying rent, car loan, medical debt, or student loans and she was like we don't even have enough for our minimum payments.... what in the world?!? so basically all of their income was food and other spending.
I hope she's not a math teacher because she terrible at numbers. Assuming her household income is 100k gross, after tax net 70k best case. $70,000/12mo = $5800/mo. Her monthly could be only $4800 if the gross is 80k. The rent and cars are eating her life. They spend way more than they bring home every month.
She makes $2800 and he makes $6000. She said they both contribute to overspending. Does she truly think a divorce and going down to a single (smaller) income will be good for her? Might be a good thing for him though.
I have the same income and we have a $3,100 mortgage payment. They are not prioritizing the bills above buying stuff/junk. I have a feeling one of them or both of them is doing "retail therapy" to the max. Dr. D needs to evaluate the marriage and mindset of the couple
My wife and I are in the same income bracket as this couple. $1750 on mortgage, $1600 in daycare. Then the rest. We’re able to put aside $1k a month. And I live in Oregon, not the cheapest place to live. Lol
They make too much money to be in such a bad situation. They’re about to be sleeping in their only car. Just listening to this stressed me out. Can’t imagine living it. Financial peace is so much better than living a nightmare while eating out and buying stupid stuff.
It sounds more like an addiction problem like gambling or drugs (why lots of medical bills?). Their monthly bills are actually reasonable. Rent is less than 25% of take-home income, so why is it in arrears?
Clothing effectively means, if it’s winter and you don’t have a coat or a sweater you buy one of those. The bare necessities, not balling Gucci swag. You may also want to wear the sweater at home and dial down the thermostat a few degrees.
The math is way off. She said they have 8k a month bring home. This equates to about 120k per year income. She stated 80k income, so the bring home is 5k per month.
"Some people, all you can is make reservations" seems like he had that one locked and loaded, but it's such a great line! And it's true, I never bothered learning to cook and only know I'm starting to realize how much you can save by cooking yourself..
Just jump on into it- the chicken won't blow up. Get some chicken breast on sale, butterfly it into smaller cutlets, put cutlets in a bag with about 1-2TBSP of mayo and some seasoning, marinate for 1hr and then pan fry each side for 3 minutes. Don't knock it until you try it, you won't pan fry chicken any other way when you try this. Do it right, that chicken can be used for dinner, dinner tomorrow, sandwiches (good ones at that with real chicken breast). You can eat really good, even better than eating out, while cooking at home. Just like a budget, meal planning takes deliberate effort but is worth it with the savings, and how you feel after eating/in the morning
A lesson for the hard way in life knowing where your money is going is very important to keep it from disappearing and not knowing until it is to late like this case.
When she mentioned getting a joint bank account. To fix it. Makes me feel like she is the one spending out of her means. And wants access to her husband’s money to cover her expenses
I’ve learned to live on almost nothing!! I’ve stopped all spending outside of bills, groceries!! Realized I literally don’t need any of the stuff I was blowing money on!! Actually starting to get caught up & hopefully pay off debt soon! 🙏🙌😊

Not trying to get lost in the details, but….. It’s not called the Dave Ramsey Show, lol. However, I AGREE, nobody is anywhere near equal to him.
Agreed, and the day he retires from hosting will be the day I stop watching/listening.

Preach it!!! I started clapping and saying Amen!!
Sometimes you need someone talking to you like a dad.

@@genxx2724 what are your thoughts on this: men arent allowed to. If they give a stern talking to their wife, girlfriend, kids, then theyre seen as abusive or controlling.
I cant speak much as im in my 20s but it seems thats more what its about than anything to me
@@Epidombe that is true nowaday but I won't care about that if I have to talk like that to teach my kids how to avoid digging a hole for themself.
@@JCJourney so then to string these thoughts together, the root lies more within men caring about their public image than anything, right?
possibly , yes. We are social animals. need to overcome that "face" problem.
LOVEEEE this!! Good to see Dave actually run a budget with a caller!!
Love how Dave took charge of the conversation.
They make between 80 & 100k a year. There's no way they're pulling 8-9k a month after taxes.
I Agree! Max $5000/ month
Caller dosent even know how much there making
I have a feeling she has no idea how much her husband makes. The fact she rounded hers to 100 and her husband to nearest thousand is a sign of that.
I did the math also she doesn’t even know how much they bring home that man is gotta run run
I think they are netting 100k. She's making $8,400/month takehome.
Yup. These always make me feel better.
I was living in $1800 a month a month and saving money for years. I've got this. I can adult
"eating out is not a necessity. some people all you know how to make are reservations" 🤣🤣🤣🤣
9k a month and it’s not enough.
The husband not letting her get rid of the separate accounts leads me to believe SHE is the spender and he doesn’t want her draining the account.
Tell it Dave deal with the root of the problem not the symptoms👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽‼️
How many millions of people wouldn’t be BROKE if they simply bought cars they could afford? 💡
I agree with the four walls but the order is different for me. Number 1 is always shelter. There’s no point having utilities if you don’t have a house. Food for me is number four, I got plenty of body weight where I can easily miss a meal or two.
I'm glad Dave is calling BS on this caller, she's trying to avoid accountability
They are so right about so many things. Financial responsibility. Live below your means. Pay necessities. No luxuries. Save and invest. Budget so you know where your money is going. And cable isn't a utility. You can solve your financial problems in a few months if you really work on it. So doable.
The other question is what happened to the money that didn’t go to rent and car payments?
I feel so bad for these people. Some folks just can't get it together.
Glad Dave was on the call and opened her eyes.
This stresses me out !! I can't even get to the end
“Are you parents cousins??” 💀💀 Dave is my favorite 😂😂
All it takes to get behind like this while having a great income is to be an impulse buyer. Habits like eating out every day, sometimes more than once a day will rack spending up rapidly.
these calls just prove that most couples do not talk about money before marriage....
Suddenly, i became financially well hearing this
We take home $10k per month and our mortgage is $900. We SOOO want a bigger home but can't swallow when we consider going up in mortgage from $900 to $2700. That's hard.
Simple! People live above their means.
they aren't paying rent, car loan, medical debt, or student loans and she was like we don't even have enough for our minimum payments.... what in the world?!? so basically all of their income was food and other spending.
They fine dining daily
Addictions are expensive.
Shopping
“Some of only know how to make reservations” 😂😂😂😂😂
Sounds like they buy their WANTS first, then what's left is NEEDS. My ex was like that and it was terribly stressful.
“Eating out is not a necessity. Some of you people all you know how to make is reservations.” 😂 Gotta love Dave.
I love you Dave !! Cable is not a necessity! !
They both out of control 😂
If she thinks they are bringing in 9k a month and making 85k a year, it explains why their budget and finances are a wreck.
She makes $2800 and he makes $6000. She said they both contribute to overspending. Does she truly think a divorce and going down to a single (smaller) income will be good for her? Might be a good thing for him though.
She probably has someone already lined up or is just simply dilusional
I think she is figuring getting half his income through alimony.
She is planning on getting half his income so she will be pulling in $5800 and he will have $3000. That’s “equality”
Not in Georgia, I don't think. At least not forever.
Awesome

I have the same income and we have a $3,100 mortgage payment. They are not prioritizing the bills above buying stuff/junk. I have a feeling one of them or both of them is doing "retail therapy" to the max. Dr. D needs to evaluate the marriage and mindset of the couple
Been listening to Dave for 6 years. My four walls are never in doubt.

$2400. Pension
$500. Food
$200. City utilities
$65. Internet.
$765. Total.
$1635. Left over.

Rode my bicycle from LAX to San Clemente today. Taking an Amtrak for $22. To San Diego
My wife and I are in the same income bracket as this couple. $1750 on mortgage, $1600 in daycare. Then the rest. We’re able to put aside $1k a month. And I live in Oregon, not the cheapest place to live. Lol
I live in texas and have 870 on rent

@Worst Case Scenario sheesh! What does that mean, “is on the dole”? Haven’t heard that before.
@@worstcasescenario3689 If it’s just you and your dog, I’d recommend a roommate type situation for sure. Usually it’s cheaper
Here in eastern Oregon! Same numbers lol 😆
Both! Are big spenders they are willing to walk away from each other. Very sad.
Trouble is, if she gets evicted, the careers and income sources will collapse like a house of cards.
Love when Dave holds the woman accountable!!
She thinks that $500 and $400 a month in car payments isn’t that much?….
Dave has got me laid out laughing at this episode
A lesson for the hard way in life knowing where your money is going is very important to keep it from disappearing and not knowing until it is to late like this case.
Great segment 👏🏻👏🏻

Denial is the first step to recovery
When she mentioned getting a joint bank account. To fix it. Makes me feel like she is the one spending out of her means. And wants access to her husband’s money to cover her expenses
I’ve learned to live on almost nothing!! I’ve stopped all spending outside of bills, groceries!! Realized I literally don’t need any of the stuff I was blowing money on!! Actually starting to get caught up & hopefully pay off debt soon! 🙏🙌😊

I love this new host omg love it ❤🎉
Marriage + general busyness of life can often create a backlog of communication. This couple needs a face to face sit-down.
Dave, you should include phone and internet in the utilities package. Those are essential needs to apply tor jobs, work for Uber, DoorDash, sell stuff on Offer up, nowadays.
I listen to this just to feel better about how I’m doing in life.
