    Chris, your advice on paying close attention on what is being offered on ebay sites is spot on. I too have in the past almost got caught up in thinking I was getting a real bargain but found it was not the case. I too purchased a blue Wing Sung 3013 for AUS$12 and subsequently purchased 2 more for the same money from another seller. This will only encourage more to get into writing with a fountain pen. I compared it with a TWSBI Diamond 580 AL and found the 3013 to be no more inferior, with the overall finish of the pen, but time will tell I suppose. I am very happy with my 3013 and is part of my EDC pen pouch. Keep up the good work.

    I have tried a Knox #5 Medium and a Nemosine #5 Medium in Wing Sung 3013s. I know many people say that you can only put Pilot nibs in these pens, but at a few bucks I decided to experiment and risk breaking the pens. Both nibs went in easily with no issues. It took me a couple of tries to get the feeder high on the nib (closer to the tip). I tried Levenger Cocoa with the Knox and Levenger Amethyst with the Nemosine. The results are, on several different papers ranging from Rhodia (smooth, unabsorbent) to Moleskine (rougher, more absorbent), that I don't like the Knox. It starts hard and feels stiff to me. I don't know whether the problem is my ham-fisted installation, the Cocoa ink (my bottle of it is at least 20 years old!), or that I just don't like the Knox. It's my first Knox #5. I will move it to a Jinhao 992 to eliminate some variables. I like the Nemosine very much and I could use the pen as my daily carry (incidentally, my daily carries are an irreplaceable 1974 Meisterstuck Medium and a Visconti Homo Sapiens Palladium Medium, each of which costs hundreds of times the cost of a 3013). I will next try Jowo broads in the 3013s with shimmering inks. I find the shimmering inks crazy fun in other pens with broad nibs, definitely worth the trouble of frequent clogging and cleaning for me!

    On a pen pause also. At some point will “need” to get some of these to put my plumix/Enso nibs into. I hate the plumix squid pens. They look pretty, by they aren’t very functional because they come apart just by looking at them, and ink supply for calligraphy is limited by cartridge use only, as the converters don’t fit right and sometimes fall off. These Wing Sung / Paili pens with their ink supply combined with the Pilot calligraphy nibs from the Plumix pens will be a great combo. The kids need it. For back to school. I think it might be on their school supply list . . . (Me rationalizing a purchase I should not make for a little bit.)

    I bought my Wing Sung 3013 from another seller ( not from boby ) but also with a medium ( WS 698) nib and it's writers up to a point the ink is not reaching to the feed no more. Y tried nibs from Win Sung 3011 and from Wing Sung 3008 ( 2019 pilot-style nib version ) and the nib it's somewhat improved but if you let the pen in Horizontal position for some time ( the pen it's caped of course ) the ink it's returning to the reservoir and it lets the feed almost dry .

      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +2

      Unfortunately I've had this issue with a few pens lately with German broad nibs. I've also had it with the Chinese medium nibs. Ink doesn't flow consistently. Something with the ink feed capillary action. I've disassembled, cleaned thoroughly, opened up feed channel, used an easy flowing lubricated ink (Monteverde). Sometimes these actions fix flow. Sometimes I just have to put in another nib.

    This was my first vacuum filled pen and I have to say, I may rather stick with piston fillers for day-to-day use. I got the Wing Sung 3008 about two years ago and I find myself always coming back to it. I try not to collect pens and just find the one perfect pen, keep selling the ones I accumulate but the 3008 has always stayed with me, to my own surprise. It seems to have a better durability than the 618 in a long term - I noticed some wear with that one, unfortunately.
    The 3013/013 is a bit gimmicky to be a perfect EDC in my opinion. Also, because the parts need to be well greased to function correctly, the ink curdles and creates droplets on the barrel which looks pretty bad. Pistons don't do that nearly as much, if at all.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +2

      I my view the vac-fillers are more complex than other filling systems & provide a little more ink but they're cool, as many seller call it "a negative pressure pen". Piston fillers work well & have almost as much ink. Have any of the cap screws on your 3008 rusted?

    • @hrnekbezucha
      @hrnekbezucha 5 років тому

      chrisrap52 you're right, vac fillers are super cool and they have larger ink capacity.
      The cap screw on 3008 did rust, unfortunately. But silicon grease or clear nail varnish would protect it. Also it's a standard screw so a water resistant replacement is really available

    Nice detailed video, as usual. I got a set of three. The pens feel great. Mine came with varying degrees of issues with the vacuum fill. Once is excellent. The pop when the vacuum is released is great. Another has less of a pop but still fills. The third doesn't fill at all. There is no vacuum created. It looks like the rubber rings on the pistons aren't consistent. I took the pen apart and tried to see if it was not seated properly and added a little silicone but it's just a bit too loose to work. It makes me think that having a supply of these rubber rings might be needed over time. I've looked and haven't seen any but maybe they'll pop up somewhere. Thanks again for the review. Very helpful. I was thinking about the nibs too.

    • @johntoledo4438

      This is a bit of a hack but I thought I'd pass it along. If you disassemble the pen and flip the o-ring at the end of the rod you can get a vacuum. When replacing the rod make sure to have the o-ring fully retracted (the rod will be fully pulled out when reassembling). Screw the rod assembling back in as usual but with the rod still fully extended (pulled out). After assembly you will feel a vacuum but since the o-ring is backwards it doesn't release until you screw the end cap back in. So, before pushing the rod back in, dip the pen into the ink bottle. Screw the end cap in, this will push the o-ring farther down, enough to release the vacuum. This actually pulling in more ink than the working pen but it involves disassembling the pen to fill it.
      I spoke too soon. The pen did get a very good fill. However, the O-ring went back up the rod and blocked the ink from going down to the feed. Basically, the pen had to be carefully emptied from the end cap; not good. I guess this one, with the defective O-ring, can be filled by removing the O-Ring and filling it with a syringe.

    For those who might get confused about the Pilot nib: Pilot makes both stub and regular point nibs, and hasn't been consistent in how it labels the stub nibs. The stub nibs were commonly labeled as double broad (BB), but then they changed that. I'm not completely familiar with how they're currently marking their stub nibs, but the one in this video is probably from a pen line with different stub widths available, hence the M, which is identical to how they label their "regular" medium nibs while clearly being a stub.
    Unfortunately we can't be guaranteed an experience free from confusion in the fountain pen world. I strongly dislike that Jinhao has made two different pen models under the same number (15). The original Jinhao 15 was inspired by some fancy $2000 pen, and had a nifty posting mechanism that slid the cap inside the end of the pen. The new Jinhao 15 is a Duofold clone of some sort. I own three of the older model and none of the newer model (yet). So when I talk about the cool posting system of the Jinhao 15 I can no longer assume people will find the correct pen.

    • @chrisrap52
      @chrisrap52  5 років тому +1

      In this commercially driven Chinese pen world, I expect lots of model changes. Labeling & model identification not a focus. In some ways that makes it a mystery, which one can enjoy.

    • @benjaminmiddaugh2729
      @benjaminmiddaugh2729 5 років тому +1

      @@chrisrap52 I agree that the arcane mysteries of Chinese pen model naming is enjoyable. However, that doesn't make avoiding confusion when showing off one of my favorite pen features to others any less frustrating. At some point I'd also like to understand the differences in the available Wing Sung 3008 models, as some are much more like the 3009s while others stay similar to the original TWSBI-clone aesthetic. (Transparent caps and piston cores being the main differentiating factor of the 3009-alikes as far as I can tell.) At least these pens are cheap enough that exploring similarities and differences in person isn't bankrupting.

      I like the 3008 & its variants. My interests have faded as I have bought about 30 & gave many away. The rusting screw was a recurring problem. Once I got into PenBBS, they had my full attention. Moonman has risen to take some of my attention. I see the higher end Chinese pens to continue to evolve in interesting ways. Nibs have definitely improved. I am enjoying this journey.

    I can't remember, but wasn't it the WS3013 that gave you a lot of startup trouble with the nib and feed initially received, requiring a two-part video to explain the experience? If you write fast & want the ink flow to keep up & you're ok with modifications (not that hard but it may need a lot of careful trial and error, usually it's making the main ink channel wider but one may overdo it and the ink could leak) it's ok to just buy the Ultraflex nib and/or Ultraflex ebonite feed (it feels like plastic but rough) and save money, otherwise it's best to buy their whole pen with the Ultraflex and the Ultraflex nib (I didn't buy the whole pen, coz' I'm not a fan of the their marbling designs and colors- I wish they had the regular colors like all black and plain dark blue and colors like that).

      An issue with many Wing Sung pens with a screw holding cap finial & clip in place. You could remove they screw, clean it & coat it with nail polish or suitable clear sealant. Then use some outdoor wood glue on threads when reassembling. I've taken a few apart & did not find the metal screws to be a standard. Too bad they don't use a rust resistant or plastic screw. Swap in nib from 3013. That would help determine if it is the nib. You could try a wetter ink, like Monteverde. The fix will be a series of changes to determine cause.

      @@dhm304100 I bought the blue Fine Wing Sung 3013/Paili 013 and initially did have similar experience with what you did with slight skipping writing the next word, found it was not wet enough and had too much feedback for my liking. I fixed all this by tuning the nib - polishing on micro-mesh, mylar paper and opening the tines with brass sheet. It is not very smooth and wet, which is how I like my pens. Give this a go and it might just fix your problem. Good luck.

    Is there a preferred source to get a fude nib? I have four of these pens and I am not a fan of the fine nibs I have--.5

      These pens use a Pilot style nib. I have not looked for these type of of fude nibs. I've heard that a #5 nib might fit. This HongDian black nib might work. www.ebay.com/itm/1Pc-Custom-Black-5-Size-EF-F-Fude-Nib-For-Hong-dian-1850-6013-Fountain-Pen/233730146840

    Warning: Please check your inked 3013 because I noticed mine rusts. The rod is made from regular steel and being always in touch with ink, it corrodes. Another user on reddit confirmed his pen also started to rust. We may need to warn people not to get these pens.

      The rod is not magnetic, so it is not plain steel. Based on the photo I saw from you on Reddit, looks like pitting. The rod could be plated brass. Pitting of plating can be caused by many factors, primarily bad plating, which could explain why some see pitting & some don't. Or something in ink attacking plating, chloride could. When I look at rod under a loop, the surface is not smooth, it looks similar to clip & band which are plated. The rod on the 456 is much smoother (not plated) & looks like bare metal.
      When I use the magnet on other pens parts from other pens was interesting to see what clips were steel (3013 was) & which weren't (699 not). None of the steel nibs I tested were magnetic, which means they are probably stainless steel.

      @@chrisrap52 Very interesting research! If you're right and the plating is at fault, there isn't much to do to save it, is there? If it was all the same material you could perhaps sand it and apply some corrosion resistant coating to protect it. I can feel the pitting when moving over it with my nail. Like little dents. And the rod is definitely not smooth.
      The ink could have caused it but I don't know how to find out if that's the case.

      The size and form of the pen work so well for me, that even if the rod degrades, I ll just use it an eyedropper. My only gripe is that I just found out in this video that I can replace the nib, but I 've no idea with what to replace it besides pilot CM and normal M. Can't find anything else where I live and shipping it in costs more than the pen.

    Got to say that this pen, the Wing Sung 3013 and the Penbbs 268 are the most disappointing pens ive bought, in that you write a couple of words, and it runs out of juice.

      @@chrisrap52 I've had the opposite experience. My 3013 runs dry very quickly if the blind cap isn't opened and the plunger drawn back a further few mm. My 456 never sealed properly because the rubber seals kept coming off the piston.
