Duran Duran was initially dismissed as just a bunch of pretty boys but with incredible hits like this song they survived for four decades. Did you see the vid project Nick worked on with another photographer for their song: The Edge of America? (w/respect to tough topics; regardless, that has become 1 of my fav tracks since my adult brain took over 🤓) They released it in 2018 for the song/album's 30th anniversary.
I have a genetic disorder that messes with my memory & ability to talk, it's episodic but annoying, so it's not unusual for me to mess up details… So I think there's an article by Rolling Stones & they have that vid on their YT Channel.

Duran Duran was not "initially" dismissed as a bunch of pretty boys. They were regarded as an up & coming band with a fans that primarily consisted of club-goers, college students & those who listened to alternative music. It took a couple of years when the band started to get more of a "teenage girl" following for some music critics to notice & those music critics, many, but not all, who did not respect the band grew up listening to the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin & the like. So, is it really even worth making a reference about this in regards to being dismissed? Those critics were biased to begin with.

So funny you say that. In the 89’s my best friend was into Van Halen, Dio and AC/DC and the like. About 10 years ago I get a text from her, she had to let me know she was at a Duran Duran concert and told me she finally understood. They do a great live performance.
Simon Le Bon has an unique voice and he is a great lyricist too, this song is so beautiful, it is special, it reaches people’s heart and it has a sort of healing power, it has great effect on people who have experienced losses in their lives.

“Ordinary World” is an homage to loved ones who have died. The song serves as a remembrance of foregone times, and details the occasional yearning for those times that everyone experiences when dealing with the death of a loved one.
Fave Duran Duran song: "Come Undone"
Duran Duran has one of the deepest back catalogs you can actually journey in to, as this track was one of their later ones. Being a kid of the 70's & 80's, this band was the "eighties" to me, as their sound and videos could only have come from that decade(the band I associate most with MTV). Ordinary World is a much more mature sounding song, and for sure shows the bands growth over the years, as you can't label this 80's. But for a good amount of people, their best songs came from that period, and they even got the honor of doing a Bond theme in 85, and with no bias I can say it is one of the best. A killer band that has endured the test of time, as they are still touring and making new music.
Ordinary World (1992) is the second song in a trilogy that provides a window, per say, into Simon Le Bon's evolution in processing the death of his close & childhood friend, David Miles. He had passed five years prior in 1986. And to add, Ordinary World was also inspired by the The Gulf War (1990-91). The song that begins the trilogy is Do You Believe in Shame? from the band's Big Thing album (1988) & this song, lyrically, is a bit rawer in a sense since it was inspired soon after Miles' death. The song that concludes the trilogy is Out Of My Mind from Duran Duran's Medazzaland album (1997).
Spanning multiple decades now, Duran Duran make great music. From Planet Earth, New Moon On monday, Girls On film to View To a Kill, Wild boys, Rio to Ordinary World, Skin Trade, I Don't Want Your Love and beyond. Don't sleep on Duran duran they are legends.

Simon le bon wrote this song and also other two songs (Do you believe in shame and Out of my mind) for his best friend's death.
He wrote the song with the rest of the band. He wrote the lyrics however since he is the vocalist & main lyricist.
I've loved Duran Duran from the first moment I saw them on MTV. I bought every album they released as soon as it came out. When this song came out, I was going through a breakup and I played it on repeat. It really helped me get to the ordinary world and learn to survive.
I'm sure this was not their bestselling song, but I believe it is the best song they recorded.
Reaching #3 in the U.S. makes this song, & any other artists' song, at the least one of their best sellers. The song also reached #1 in Canada & in Italy & it was #1 in European Hit Radio. Plus, the song reached the top 5 in multiple countries. It was also awarded for being the Most Performed Song given in 1994 by the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) & won the Ivor Novello Award for Most Performed Work & nominated for International Hit Of The Year in 1994.

Why would you even need to say that you are "not ashamed to admit it" in regards to Duran Duran being one of your favorite bands? The band is one of the most respected in the industry. They are constantly being recognized for their musical influence in the industry & for crying out loud, they are in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in a club with The Beatles, James Brown, The Stones, Bob Marley & etc... Be a fan but get ""not ashamed to admit it" out of your vocabulary. 🙂

This song hits you in the feels and gives me goosebumps every single time. I have heard many others sing it and they sound great but something about his delivery in this song is just perfection. It has a certain yearning, heartbreak and even hope. Watching this live is magical!

there were some seriously great UK new wave bands in the 80s...and into the 90s... Duran Duran, Thompson Twins, Depeche Mode, Howard Jones, The Cure...lots of other of course... their music really stands the test of time...

New Wave music stopped around 1984 but some of the bands associated with New Wave changed their sound & certainly, flourished even more into the 1990s. Some of those bands like Duran Duran, The Cure & Depeche Mode still thrive today.

This was sort of considered their first “grownup” song. They’d been an 80’s pop band and were often not taken seriously because they were…. and still are “pretty boys”. This was thought of as a comeback song but they never went anywhere to comeback from. A few others to consider checking out are
- The Reflex, probably their biggest hit.
- Rio
- Do You Believe In Shame, another song for lost friends.
- Notorious will make you want to dance

Duran Duran have been around since 1981 and are still making albums and touring so "later" when referring to a song that came out in 1992 is hardly accurate. In addition, Duran Duran had songs considered "mature" in 1986 with Skin Trade, in 1988 with Do You Believe In Shame?, Land, Palomino & Too Late Marlene. Ordinary World is an extension of this process of "mature Duran Duran" as they were getting older from their teens and into their late twenties & early thirties. Just like The Beatles who sound in the early 1960s through the latter 1960s evolved into a "mature Beatles sound."
Frank Zappa alum (and former Missing Persons axe man) Warren Cuccurullo on guitar was a key to this Duran rebirth in 1993. His lead lines gave much needed heft to what sometimes could be an airy Duran template.
The entire band was key to this album & not limited to Cuccurullo. In regards to an "airy Duran template." Whatever this means.

@@billw715 Fair, I should've said during their time. When this song dropped it was a bit of a revival for Duran Duran, they had gone quiet for a bit, we had moved onto other things. I remember being happy they were back, and their sound was a bit more refined for me.

I never went onto other things however & you're right about the band going quiet because their previous album in 1990, Liberty, was their first commercial failure. So to bounce back with two strong songs in Ordinary World & Come Undone- basically in 1993 (& with Ordinary World also being arguably one of their best works)- I couldn't have been more happier also. I always took it as a break up song, reminds me of my struggle to get over my ex wife. But that's one of the great things about music means different things to different people.
Typically, Simon Le Bon, the vocalist & main lyricist for Duran Duran, doesn't reveal the meaning of his lyrics/songs. He wants the listener to come up with their own interpretations. However, with Ordinary World, the lyrics & its main theme were inspired by another level of emotions since the song deals with the loss of his close & childhood friend, David Miles, who passed away in 1986. Le Bon's been open about the struggles he's processed with losing Miles over the years. The song was also lyrically inspired by The Gulf War (1990-1991). Ordinary World is a part of trilogy of songs that centers around the loss of Miles. This was early to mid 90s on their comeback album 93 I think….. they was HUGE in the mid 80s…. When people talk about bands like one direction a few years ago breaking America - you could times it by 10 then 10 again and your probably not even close to realising their popularity …. 2 videos I’d like you to possibly react to would be the wild boys official video - this was released in 84 at the height of their popularity and it’s such an unusual song…. The video to the song is way way way ahead of its time…. I’ve never seen anything like it since …. When you consider this was 40 years ago just makes it more amazing - I think it cost £1m to make and I dread to think what that would equate to these days……. The 2nd is is there something I should know but make sure it’s from the concert as the lights go down which is a live performance from their American tour of 1984… their stage presence is literally off the scale and you get a picture of their popularity from the crowd
Ordinary World was released in the fall of 1992 & this track was not from a comeback album & One Direction is not a good example to use because Duran Duran is actually a band and a band that formed themselves, who also write their own songs & play their own instruments. They are not a group of singers contrived & put together by music producers.

OMG, I always associated this song with a break-up not a death - until now. This was one of my wife's favorite songs and she always said it made her think of me, which I always assumed was because I greatly resembled Simon LeBon (their vocalist) when I was younger. But since she passed over five years ago I've really struggled to find my way in life. It's like her attraction to this song was a prophecy or something.

These guys were a teenage girl band when I was in high school. Then later this song came out (under economic pressure to make some money) and I finally considered them legit. Still a great song decades later.
The band's fan base was started by club-goers, people into alternative music & by college students. The band's fan base evolved several years later predominantly into a teen-age girl fan base. However, despite being over shadowed by this fan base, the club-goers, people into alternative music & college students were still prevalent fans of the band. The fan transformation was & is bizarre but that's what can happen to a group of good-looking musicians who were teenagers & into their early twenties themselves. The Beatles & The Rolling Stones lived a parallel existence/evolution in regards to their fan base as well.
