One of my favorite aspects of this trope is the fact that Innes, Shinon, and Felix are all REALLY REALLY GOOD at what they do. Shinon is probably the greatest archer on the continent and one of th few actually good bow units in the series (at least his Radiant Dawn incarnation). He's a deadly archer, incredibly smart and perceptive, a skilled craftsman, well traveled and learned, and iirc he shows once or twice that he is capable of being charismatic and persuasive, but yet he just CHOOSES to be a hater and to have beef with a teenager. It further emphasizes how pathetic this man really is.
tfw he's probably the only guy at the end of Radiant Dawn who didn't learn anything from everything that happened. He's still probably racist and dislikes Ike's existence.
One of my favorite things about Shinon is his dynamic with Soren. Like they're the only non goody-goody people in the Greil Mercenaries, they're the only ones who voted against helping Elincia, so one would think that they would get along, but no, these 2 assholes ABHOR each other. Honestly, I really wish that there was more media exploring their dynamic.
I agree. Soren and Shinon are both a very good example of an avoidant misanthrope and an aggressive misanthrope respectively. Soren, while not being afraid to tell his mind, does this always in a sarcastic or inoffensive manner. Shinon either says what he thinks or nothing at all, if the consequences are too high. Soren tends to completely avoid people (even as a Branded if he wanted to be around people, he could make up some explanations, since amongst Beorc the Branded are relatively unknown) and only sticks around with the few people he trusts, aka Ike, Titania and possibly Ranulf. Shinon on the other hand has no problems being in a crowd, but also strongly prefers the company of a chosen few, like Gatrie and Rolf. Rolf also deserves special mentioning here, since most misanthropic people tend also to find children annoying, which tied into what FEMS said about Shinon respecting experience. Propably Shinon saw Rolf trying to use a bow and thought to himself: "Well, for a kid he is trying at least. Lets not waste that honest effort." It is understandable that both abhor each other. Soren views Shinon as practically asking for unnecessary trouble, while Shinon propably thinks Soren is a coward. So similar, yet so much the opposite.^^
Innes has a bit of funny character development when Gerik and Tethys stay by his side even after being fired by Innes in their moment of peril, and when he orders them to flee they say you can't order us you fired us lmao. Then after they survive together he doubles their salary as a deep thanks though he can't quite say it.
Shinon is actually one of the most important and underappreciated contributors to PoR's rich story and worldbuilding in my view. Ike's growth would be much less impactful without Shinon being there to lampshade his inexperience in the earlygame, and showing that respect doesn't come automatically. And the entire social tensions between races thing would be much less convincing without a very clear foil in Shinon who shows how bad prejudices can get.
My personal headcanon for Innes hating Ephraim is that in his eyes, Ephraim is a natural-born warrior prince, who manages to get as far as he did just because he's that good & to make it worse, he treats it like it's no big deal & acts humble about it. Obviously, that isn't true. Ephraim had to work to get as powerful as he did, just like Innes had to work his ass off to be in the state he is now, but Innes doesn't see it that way since he doesn't know the extent of Ephraim's upbringing. Again, this is purely a headcanon on my end, but one i kinda grew fond of since i can kinda relate to it to an extent.
I’m glad you brought up CF Felix vs AM because while him being a perma-hater is a bit restricted in Azure Moon him defecting in Crimson Flower is one of the few out of house recruits I can rationalize in part 2. Also worth noting that there’s cut content of him defecting in Azure Moon as well, can see why they didn’t do it but would have added a lot more weight to the deaths in the route.
Shinon is one of my favorite Tellius characters. I like how he's just SO competent and strong, but stuff doesn't go his way because he gets in his own way
I like both of these guys. A lot. For Shinon in particular, the fact that he's an arrogant, racist jerk in a band of good guys is what makes him memorable for me, especially because I usually dislike that type of characters. And I can't forget his quote towards Ike in the epilogue: "Bah... I suppose you want some kind of congratulations now, right? Well, too bad: you're a snot-nosed whelp, and I'm still better than you. Don't you ever forget that." Ike proved his worth as the new leader of the Greil Mercenaries, saved Elincia and Crimea, united both beorc and laguz, and defeated Mad King Ashnard... but Shinon still hates his guts 💀
Oh hey, i remember that Dinkleberg/Turner comparison with Innes and Ephraim. It was on that Innes character analysis video. Also don't let this distract you from the fact the last character analysis was 4 months ago. Nonetheless, if/when they come back, I'd be happier than a dog that hears the word "walk".
Imagine if Innes and Ephiram had a support chain that was just Innes seething at Ephiram from the background and then they got a paired ending where they just mention that he spent the rest of his life being a hater. Or if Innes and Eirika's ending mentioned that Innes held the fact he f*cked Ephiram's sister over his head for the rest of their lives and Ephiram was very happy for the two
For Innes, it seems like an inferiority complex. He *knows* he has to be better than Ephraim but believes he'll never get to surpass Ephraim so he does his best to put Ephraim down to "even the playing field." Innes insult's Ephraim's character, Ephraim gets booted from the throne or becomes so depressed that he leaves the throne to his sister, Innes is now the best king by default.
i love characters like shinon and makalov. not everyone has to be a person fighting for truth and justice. some people are just working for that paycheck so they can live.
Innes: rivals with Ephraim due to arrogance. Lyon: rivals with Ephraim due to insecurity. Innes: joins Ephraim Lyon: gets killed by Ephraim Innes: marries Eirika Lyon: is in love with Eirika but never confessed it They are two sides of the same coin.
I think Heroes missed a big opportunity. Force Ephraim and Innes to wear the fairy outfits for their resplendent art like their sisters. Have them absolutely hate it, but Innes still demand to know that he wore it better. I honestly have a hard time liking Shinon. Deserting and racism were bad enough, but then he went and joined the enemy army that conquered our country. Like, wow dude.
So I want to say, how you feel about Shinnon was how I feel about Hubert. His C-rank with Byleth is SO funny and pathetic. This child actually thinks he's scary enough to threaten a magical mercenary that is known as a Demon, someone stronger, smarter, and better at magic then him, someone that is teaching him. It's so pathetic and stupid, he SO needs to appear big and bad and scary he actually tried.
@@ultimaterecoil1136 On one hand Byleth not only has time magic, which is an auto win really, but Hopes makes it clear Byleth already has Ragnorok. Meanwhile Hubert is learning from Hanneman who outright says he's weaker than Byleth in anything combat.
@@nahte123456 I wouldn’t really consider byleth’s divine powers magic for one. And second Ragnarok is like really bad for 3 houses standards. Honestly nosferatu is a more relevant spell for a magically inclined byleth because of white magic avoid. Dark spikes is only slightly weaker ( 2 less might and Hubert’s magic stat will realistically be higher making even his miasmas stronger then a byleth using Ragnarok and Is ) and has effectiveness vs cavalry which is quite relevant. Byleth also lacks any additional range spells and is dependent on staffs for range and Hubert’s arguably even got him beat on the enemy phase mage front with his lack of a crest meaning he can use thyrsus to trigger vantage making him arguably second best enemy phaser behind Dimitri ( and even having a leg up in some cases due to his overall higher likelihood for his spell crits to kill because of lower res on average and where as the high defense enemies tend to have hp as well enemy mages don’t tend to have much hp though Dimitri is overall better due to being able to kill a higher amount of units with his enemy phase shenanigans cuz you can just grab some more weapons out of the convoy if they are all gone where as if Hubert is out of spells Hubert is out of spells though frozen Lance helps since you can use that in cases where you just need to use him on player phase

In fairness, while it sounds like Shinon is a real piece of work (never have gotten a chance to play the Ike games, though I'd like to), being the son of a mercenary commander *is* like being born with a silver spoon in your mouth, by late medieval standards. Like, being able to afford multiple weapons, and being able to hire people for long-term service, is already way more money than your average peasant, even a skilled craftsman like a shoemaker or something, would have. Then you have units like Titania, who has a whole-ass horse and plate harness. Even if she came along readily, just the upkeep would be ruinous for most. Ike might not be a prince, but he's definitely gotten a leg up over most of the population in a Fire Emblem game.
I'm most familiar with FE7 with Vaida and a lesser extent Raven. Those two are pretty high up there for me, I gotta get around to playing the other games to train up these grudge fueled nerds.
Personally, I like Shinon because he is a racist bastard. It shows that not all of our side are squeaky clean good guys and gives some much appreciated flavor. I also don't remember Shinon have some tragic backstory to every justify it, he is just a jerk. Innes is the ultimate example of treating someone as a frienemy
I like how unique Innes is. He's a Prince / King that's an Archer. I want an Fire Emblem MC whose main weapon is a Bow.
Isn't Claude a bow use MC
He's like a Deuteragonist to Byleth. I'm speaking like a True standalone MC as a Bow Wielder.
If you count Tear Ring Saga, there's Holms. Granted he's a lord along with a Leif look a like.
If you like romhacks, try Souls of the Forest, the 2 MCs use bows
