Just How Good is the VKB Gunfighter mk III Pro?!

- In this video, I review the VKB Gunfighter Mk.III Modern Combat Edition Pro version joystick. It looks great from the outside but is the VKB Gunfighter Mk III Pro really like when you get down to the nitty-gritty.
There are plenty of competing joysticks in the market like the Thrustmaster Warthog of Virpil's offerings so VKB has its work cut out if they want to shine with this one.

I was shocked at the plastic when i first got this stick, but quickly fell in love with it. I've now just upgraded to the ultimate and it's perfect, weighty and quieter buttons.
Yea same here. The base makes up for it though. Still I bet the ultimate is brilliant
I opted for the Ultimate MCG. ZERO Regrets. It has the MASS you were looking for. Solid cast Aluminium. It's heavy enough to require the heavier springs to help it stop bouncing back & forth when you let go of it from the left or right end of travel.
The "Weight" of the Grip is MOOT. Once Mounted, you don't feel the weight or lack thereof. It is an extremely comfortable grip with more functionality than the vast majority of stick/grips on the market. If the Grip was any heavier and you mounted it to the Base OR an Extension, you wouldn't feel any difference because it is mounted. So who cares if the grip feels cheesy when you take it out of the box ? It doesn't matter. Hook it up with whichever cam-springs you want and that'll offer all the resistance you need or want, negating the light weight of the grip. If the grip were any heavier, then you'd need even stronger/heavier Cam-Springs to recenter the stick.
I'll put this grip against ANY other in the same price category any day. I have used mine for YEARS without ANY issues.
I can see where your coming from although still disagree, I reckon the TM warthog grip build quality beats it out but true in a sense once you get it mounted the differences mute a little dependant on the spring setup. Thanks for sharing your POV. I always enjoy hearing what others have to say.
Pop the shell on the grip open, find some empty spots, then glue a few fishing weights inside.
Love my MCG Pro for SC. Light weight means more agile. I've had it for years, it's fantastic.
Good to know!
How is this channel under 1K subs, this is incredibly high quality.
Thank you for your kind comment.
Thanks for sharing a look at this product. Do you think if you flew for several months with the VKB stick that you'd adapt? I'm wondering if the stick just didn't feel right to you because you're used to a heavier metal stick. Perhaps somebody who is already used to a plastic grip wouldn't have the same complaints?
I think if you’ve never experienced a grip with weight you wouldn’t know any different. However the price that you are paying for this I think the feel of the grip should be much better. Are thinking h of buying one?
@@g-locmedia I have their mid-level "Gladiator" stick right now. I'm quite happy with it, but sometimes I think about upgrading to a more premium stick.
@@takeoffwithjakesoft have you ever tried the warthog stick?
@@g-locmedia No, I haven't. I get mixed reviews on that one whenever I ask about it or go looking for info.
Lighter weight is good on the stick. Requires less spring tension. You do not need weight in the stick, at all.
I put a thrustmaster warthog grip on it with an adaptor, and this thing felt like crap with the heavy ass grip, I tell ya. Even with heavier springs. Everything takes more effort.
Thank you for a really honest review. Insta subscribed to your channel!
Is it possible (easy) to get the grip from Warthog on the base?
Regards from Denmark :)
Yea you can actually buy the Warthog grip separate. Try amazon.
@@g-locmedia Sorry, my question wasn't clear enough :)
I ment: can you mount the Warthog grip on the base without too much work? :)
I had the earlier plastic grip for years and immediately pulled the trigger on the Ultimate metal grip when it came out. Well worth it! Totally smashes my one gripe with the VKB Gunfighter. It is my go-to stick.
I’ve never tried but metal one but I can imagine it will be amazing.
Great review, I have the base and the Ultimate grip and I have to say its worth the extra money for the full metal grip and I highly recomend it. The F14 stick is also not bad but would be great if they made a ultimate version for it as well.
Awesome. Thanks for the info. Always great for others watching the video to see value comments like that.
Yeah I thought the one in the video was the one I had but then there was talk about plastic :D
So had to check my order mail and I also have the ultimate with metal grip, feels super nice in the hand :)
@@geronim00 I bet it does mate. I’d be keen to know how you get on with it.
@@g-locmedia Something also worth mentioning since you have a thrustmaster stick is they make an adapter for the thrustmaster f16/F18 grips so you can use them on their base.
Good feedback on the base and this grip.
I was going to get this with the MCG Ultimate but I fly choppers and when the externally adjustable Virpil CM3 base came out I decided to go for that with an Alpha Prime and a couple of extensions. It should hopefully be here in the next couple of weeks. If I’m happy with it I’ll get the CM3 throttle and the #2 panel.
In the end I also went with Virpil so I can use the Thrustmaster grips if I want to.
On a side note I’m surprised you didn’t just get the ultimate.
I got this on on loan for a bit so I could test it. I have the virpil co troll label 2 and I’ll be putting out a full review on it over the next 2-3 weeks but I can say I absolutely love it.
@@g-locmedia thought that might have been the case. Everyone raves about the Ultimate. The only slight negative I’ve heard is the Gunfighter base struggles with a longer extension due to the weight of the Ultimate grip.
@@doifeellucky yea I could see that being a slight issue but maybe heavier springs would do the trick and you can also adjust the cams inside. But yea that wouldn’t surprise me.
Great review. Never heard of this company before. Whilst not looking for a fighter style stick currently, glad to see the market is expanding.😊
Thank you. Yea there are a few good ones on the market now.
Virpil and vkb are in a completely different league to the thrustmaster warthog
I don’t know if I’d say different league. Got to take the cost in to account too. But they are at the top end of what you can buy. It’s good to see so many flight sim companies making great peripherals.
@@g-locmediaYou know that VKB joysticks provides the option to mount the warthog grip on them. I've got one such kit from VKB for 20 euros for my 2016 Gladiator Pro that uses that same metal gimbal system like yours. I have the KG12 and Modern Combat Grip, but left myself the option to mount a warthog head if one appears to me reasonably priced. So you can mount your Warthog head to your VKB base and enjoy the perfect combo.
Get the MCG pro add-on grip for Gunfighter Mk.III all cold metal.
Hi there, i've got my Gunfighter Mk.III Modern Combat Edition Pro today. But in de VKB Device Config i can't see the long metal brake handle is working.. Do you know how to fix it? gr. AVince
Hello mate. Don’t have the VKB on hand anymore that can have a look at it but my first go to would be to flash the firmware.
@@g-locmedia Hi there, ..i found a video on YT how to fixed the problem.. thanks.. Problem Solved.
@@VinceViking26 glad you got it fixed mate.
I have the Ultimate and the extension coming from a X56 it was like going from the Wright flyer to the Blackbird. The grip feels great in metal and with the extension and the layout of my sim rig reaching all of the buttons is really easy, personally I found switching out the springs to allow for the longer stick and to allow easier recentering of the setup was a bit tricky and could imagine folks could struggle with it far more than I did. Also with the extension I found that it was even easier to make far smaller inputs too.
Yes I bet the extension really helps get that subtle inputs. Nice to hear you’ve had a great experience with the ultimate.
I don't mind a plastic grip if it's good quality(which I believe VKB is), but at its price it should be all metal as this is on the higher end for sticks.
Not sure if id say it has to be all metal but it certainly should be much weightier and sturdier at its current price but i think the base is really what you're paying for.
Ive owned this model for over a year now, yes thr grip would be better with a bit more weight but its not really a problem for me, still feels good quality in my opinion and as for using it, best joystick ive ever owned, feels great to use and would recommend it to any one, pretty decent value too for what you get :)
Thanks for sharing your experience of the stick. It’s great for other that are looking to buy. Not only do they see my video but they get other opinion too. Makes the feed very valuable.
You get more accuracy because the engineering grade abs are to intentionally reduce the weight which helps with aiming. Using this material is arguably more expensive than cheap metal construction.
While I agree in some sense that wouldn't explain why their metal variant is much more expensive. still. for me I'd rather go with something more substantial feeling. Its still a good stock though.
@@g-locmedia metal tooling is more expensive for low quantity production. It is much easier to produce products as needed in plastic. Also a lot of the cost is shipping expense increases not actual material cost. Yes metal is more durable but its weight will reduce your accuracy.
@@g-locmedia It's because people think that metal=better, so they charge premium, because they can get away with it. Simple as.
AFAIK, In actual planes, sticks are made out of plastic or other fancy composites, not metal.
Do you think it's better to use a stick extension for dcs?
If your flying helicopters I reckon it might be. All round the extension is going to give you more control. I’ve tried it and it does however I still fly without an extension as I have the stick side mounted.
@@g-locmedia Thank you for your reply :). Why is an extension less useful for side mount? Sorry but I don´t have any experience with flying yet but want to get some equipment yet
@@-Ambos- if it’s mounted in the centre I can have it in front on the seat by when it’s at the side the extension stick interferes with the seat itself.
I have the Ultimate with a 200mm extension. World of difference with the helicopters.
I would not put the warthog in the same company as VKB, Virpil and Winwing
Just wish it had a NWS button.
The better precision is the result of the lighter stick.

You could always get the vkb to thrustmaster adapter and use the warthog grip on the gunfighter base and get the best of both worlds
Did know that was a thing. I’ll check that out.
