      He reminds me of out of touch grandparents... which is probably why they were his main audience... or are his main audience.

    "Are you working out?" "What's the shortest film you ever did?" Jesus Christ, how did this guy ever land a TV show, let alone keep it for so many years? A smarter and more talented host could satisfy the middle-of-the-road needs of a mainstream talk show while engaging Lynch more and getting more out of him. Lynch is a tough subject, being uncomfortable and ill-suited to this kind of thing, but this is supposed to be Leno's job.

    • @redsunbluemoonpictures5135
      @redsunbluemoonpictures5135 7 років тому +8

      Well, if you're not aware, these talk show segments are usually rehearsed and everything. Some seem to be more than others, but the vast majority of them have been meticulously pre-planned, and, if I'm not mistaken, this appears to me to be no exception. The way Lynch has his answers so ready on some of these mundane questions could be chalked up to the kind of direct way he answers things, so it's actually kind of hard to tell in retrospect, but when I was watching it, I thought the very same thing for a split second, wondering why such simple odd questions for someone as deep and interesting as Lynch, but it almost instantaneously occurred to me that, for whatever reason, Lynch and Leno had likely agreed to these particular questions, which, btw, aren't as odd as they may seem if you're familiar with Lynch(for example, the workout question isn't so odd when you know David Lynch, while apparently not working out, and apparently having no desire to talk much about it during this interview, but Lynch is very into transcendental meditation, and is pretty much a guru with it, traveling and doing seminars and things regularly, and, come to think of it, I remember seeing Leno there at footage of one of these events, and maybe Jay thought David would want to talk about this, though, apparently not)

    • @redsunbluemoonpictures5135
      @redsunbluemoonpictures5135 7 років тому +2

      There was definitely a joke there, a very obvious one, I'm not sure if Leno quite captured it, well, he did, but it fell flat for some reason, though through no fault of his own, in my estimation. Lol, I think people just didn't get it because they didn't listen carefully. The semi-rhetorical question he asked Lynch wasn't the joke itself, but in the question was the implication of the joke at the same time, because it's kind of a trick question, as, there is no difference between a hot water heater and a water heater, and Jay was picking apart the term 'hot water heater', because, you know, it doesn't make sense in the way that it isn't heating up water that is already hot, which its title implies, not to mention the word 'heater' rendering the word 'hot' redundant. When Lynch attempted to sincerely answer Jay's sarcastic rhetorical-ish question, Jay then started giving Lynch shit about his answer, pretending Lynch literally meant his sarcastic answer, and no one seemed to get it and everything fell apart and Jay was reduced to quickly pointing out the point of his joke--saying hot water heater is like saying 'cold ice', etc.

      I noticed that Lynch coughed right when Leno was about to say something (right after he asks if Lynch exercises) so it's plausible that it was about his Transcendental Meditation.

    You can really sense that David Lynch is about to say some thing clever or funny and Jay Leno just cannot stop talking and cuts him off at every opportunity. It’s kind of like the exact opposite of what you should do as an interviewer. Compare this to what Johnny Carson would do, which is to give space some breathing room to let the guest be charming and fascinating which is why you invited them in the first place

  • @redsunbluemoonpictures5135
    @redsunbluemoonpictures5135 7 років тому +10

    Wow, I think most people that commented have misinterpreted what was happening here, in my perception anyway. I've been a huge fan of Lynch for years, in fact, I'm doing a David Lynch marathon right now, watching all his movies, Twin Peaks, and the new Twin Peaks season eventually, and I'm in heaven(no pun intended actually lol), but I'd also watched Leno on a regular basis for many years when he was still on, and I gotta say that it's obvious, to me anyway, that Jay clearly has alot of respect for Lynch and his work and sincerely sees him as a talented genius, and Leno is simply 'ribbing' him, just giving him a hard time.
    Now, I can see how Leno's approach/attitude may come across as maybe arrogant or condescending, but that's Leno's style, and if you're familiar with him at all, you'd know that. Having said that, of course Leno can be cocky at times, and sometimes I can see how it can be offensive if its taken too far, but at the end of the day, that's Jay's style, he's kind of a loud, cocky Man's man, and it's totally his style to, you know, 'give them shit', all in good fun, and someone like Lynch, I envision Leno's approach to him being a combination of taking advantage of any and all 'weaknesses' or odd things about his character, such as awkwardness or eccentricity, which, again, is totally Leno's style, and totally call him out on/give him shit about any shortcomings he picks up on, and it's all in good fun, and I think tempered with genuine respect Leno has for Lynch, and I think anytime Jay gets too condescending without holding back, he actually has a problem with the person, but here, I think he respects Lynch, and seems to like him alot, and I mean Lynch was the perfect target for him and his style of comedy, Lynch being very eccentric, but Lynch is also a very nice guy, and you can tell Leno genuinely likes him and is just giving him shit, and its also clear, by the things he says, that he does respect and appreciate Lynch as an artist as well.
    Anyway, I think many people picked up on Jay's attitude, but completely misread it as being genuinely nasty and condescending, whereas, I think Lynch was just a good 'target' for Jay's comedic style, and Jay actually liking Lynch seemed to actually make him that much more enthusiastic about teasing him, if you know what I mean. Also, Gwenyth Paltrow being there and also amused at Lynch's eccentricities probably fueled the fire.
    Also, about people laughing at Lynch in the audience. well, I was laughing at those moments too, because of the numerous little semi-awkward pauses and things, and the unintentional humor of the whole thing, Lynch speaking from the heart about a serious issue everyone agrees about, but it somehow came out with a kind of earnestness coupled with wording it in a way that seemed almost too obvious of an idea for it to be sincere and you almost expect it to be saracstic or ironic, and, ironically, Lynch sees the irony in this, feeling these awkward little moments where what he's saying has this unexpected, unintentional humor to it, having to do with a combination of Lynch's earnestness, his eccentricities, and his kind of direct and blunt way of saying things sometimes, to where a genuine answer from him can easily come off as a punchline, which, I think, is something that one can appreciate and find amusing in a way that isn't insulting to Lynch, but rather an embrace of who he is.
