When you use VR your brain acts differently then in real life. That's because your subconscious sees VR as real. It has to tweak some of the brains functions to "survive" in the rules of the perceived world. When you take the headset off your brain switches back to normal mode.

You can't compare a rat watching a screen infront of itself to VR. VR has depth perception. A projected screen does not.
