California Fall Color Hunt: Bishop, Mammoth Lakes, June Lake | VLOG

- We finally had a true FALL COLORS California experience, October 11th - 16th 2021. I brought along my camera for photographing fall colors and have also included some general based maps in the video. Peak, near peak, past peak, we noticed this varied based on elevation. The higher we were (9,000 ft and above), it was likely past peak. Lower elevations (9,000 and below), stunning color! Who knew there were brilliant fall colors in California?!?!
Using both Mammoth Lakes, CA and Bishop, CA as our base, we found fall colors at North Lake, Lake Sabrina, Aspendell, and South Lake in Inyo County. In Mono County we found fall colors at Rock Creek Lake, McGee Creek, and Convict Lake. Around the June Lake Loop, the best fall colors we found were at Silver Lake.
We also visited Devils Postpile, Lake Mary, and Lake George. Fall colors in these areas were harder to find but still gorgeous places to see if you are in the Mammoth Lakes area.
On the drive home we had to make our regular stop at Erick Schat's Bakkery which was total insanity. I've never seen it so crowded. We were a bit early for Bishop Fall Colors.
Our fall color search was a success. It was definitely the type of color where you are fully wrapped in a cozy blanket of yellow and orange hues. I can't wait to try again next year!

Directions to the Best Fall Colors from Bishop:
Head WEST on CA-168 (aka. Bishop Creek Road) for approx. 15 miles (20 minute drive)
from here you will have access to these spots:
-Aspendell
-Cardinal Village Resort (highly-rated accommodations according to Google reviews).
-North Lake
-Lake Sabrina
-South Lake
From Bishop to Mammoth Lakes (approx. 45 miles):
head North on US-395, Exit at Crowley Lake Drive / Rock Creek Lake
from Crowley Lake Drive you have great access to:
-Rock Creek Road towards Rock Creek Lake - beautiful spots of Fall Color
-The entire length of Crowley Lake Drive is spotted with gorgeous color.
-McGee Creek Road has dramatically stunning Fall Color with the mountains as a backdrop. Note: this road becomes a gravel dirt road
Then, head North on US-395 and take the exit for Convict Lake - beautiful lake with beautiful Fall Colors.
From Mammoth Lakes to June Lake Loop Road:
Head North on US-395 and Exit on CA-158 (June Lake Loop Road)
June Lake Loop Road is approx. 15 miles around with spots of beautiful color and you will have access to:
-June Lake
-Gull Lake
-Silver Lake (the best Fall Color in this area)

I am so glad I found this video. This is nearly exactly one year after you posted this video and my girlfriend and I will be making almost exactly the same trip from the 18th through the 22. This will be her first trip to experience Fall colors in the US so I hope we are as successful and you guys were. We are also going to Yosemite and Bristlecone. You pointed out many of the places where I am hoping to see fall colors. Thank you so much. I am sure now that we will be successful.

You sure did cover lot of area in search of the fall colors! I noticed you found colors in some places and then didn’t in some. Based on your 2021 experience, if you have to go again and maximize the fall colors would you pick October 12th week or before? I am looking to take my son this year to this beautiful area. We have talked about this area since 2018 and still have not visited. Trying to make sure we will be able to see colors. I would definitely try around the same time (Oct 12th), you will definitely see fall colors… but maybe try a week or more earlier for the higher elevations. We only had an hour or so in Aspendell but it was gorgeous walking around, glad you have it high on your list! Good luck, I hope you get up to the eastern sierras this fall, it’s really beautiful.😎
