    As Kenyans we are also very good at constructive criticism and then absolutely good at just criticism ! If only we had more people working to find solutions than just finding fault with others contributions..the best place to start is " what am I doing to change what I want to see change"?

    Good reporting as always! I question if this sort of development is the right choice and direction the city should be moving in. After your piece on sanitation in Nairobi it seems like this is moving forward in some areas without developing solutions for existing problems in the city. Also these housing developments will drive up cost of living in Nairobi and I hope that companies in the city are able to provide a living wage to its inhabitants.

    I have nothing against all these real estate development...but in reality most of these offices and malls are empty. There is no real economic growth in this country.. government infrastructure spending (borrowed from China) is keeping our economy on the move..the middle class is so thin. I wish we had investors investing in manufacturing industries etc that would spur real economic growth. The service industry relies on a middle class with enough disposable income.

    • @generalflaviusaetius1997
      @generalflaviusaetius1997 5 років тому +5

      Yeah, Kenya's growth's mainly in the service industry. I think it's been moving really fast. And every day I hear new upper-middle - high income gated communities being advertised while still in their conceptual stage. But I still think there's opportunity in the service industry since despite the problems in the country, there is a greater number of wealthier people, in the country than 10-20 years ago, in my humble opinion. But I also keep telling close friends the real opportunity is in enabling manufacturing in Kenya which is growing dismally and the service industry cannot grow forever, eventually it'll hit saturation point and prices will fall, especially with every developer focussing on high-upper middle income sector. As an engineer, I can tell you that most engineering jobs nowadays tend to be sales engineer jobs here, just glorified sales people who know enough to do a bit of maintainence of pre-built foreign machinery, electronics, telecoms stuff, etc, but very little to advance their fields. And the problem is eventually, there'll be no more jobs for engineers aside from entrepreneurship.

    • @emmanuellimo6139
      @emmanuellimo6139 5 років тому +5

      @@generalflaviusaetius1997 yeah it's a bubble that may or may not burst. The question we should be ask ourselves is it sustainable..? My answer is no... There is already an oversupply, malls are having to cut their rent rates and even more springing up. The market is near saturation. A service economy needs an internal consumer class which is small here. No advanced nation skipped the industrial phase.

    • @bradpetez

      High rises are not a problem the problems are:
      1. They are not integrated into a cohesive zoning plan
      2. High density urban housing requires a generous "urban fabric" - parks, bike lanes, light rail, mass transit buses or trains, foot paths etc.
      3. Ideally they should be close to where people can walk, cycle or take a short bus ride.
      Parks are important, children and adults need relief from concrete enclosed spaces during weekends or free days. Parks with play areas and lots of open green space.

    ISIOLO SHOULD BE BUILT AS KENYAS PLANNED CAPITAL CITY. Just like TZ have done with Dodoma, and Nigeria with Abuja. It is the most central point in Kenya. It has plenty of land that can be built into a well planned center of Government. it will facilitate the opening up of the vast wealth of Northern and north Eastern Kenya. It will give us a chance to have a Capital city that is not run by cartels and that is well controlled by the central government. IT WILL GIVE US A CHANCE TO EXPERIMENT WITH GREEN TECHNOLOGIES, SOLAR ENERGY, MODERN TRANSPORT SYSTEMS ETC and lastly we can all work together to make a capital city we can be proud of...not this rubbish hole called Nairobi which has the whole country in its rotten grip, unable to ever move forward. We need to let Nairobi just be a commercial hub and let it develop as it will as a county. A shift by government would even encourage migration up north and decongest the overpopulated parts of the country including Nairobi. IT WOULD OPEN WHOLE NEW FRONTIERS FOR OUR YOUNG PEOPLE

    We as many are not impressed! A small city with only 4.5m people cannot function effectively, due to negative politics and rampant corrupt behaviours of the shareholders.These are affecting the initial plan of the Nairobi metropolis.Why should all headquarters,industries,govt agencies be placed in one Nairobi? Nowonder everyone hopes for an opportunity in Nairobi hence unwarranted pressure on everything.We should think of a new capital city...plan for expansive Konza tech city or city of Isiolo, instead of the so called Nairobi expansion. Infact it is interefering with our green enviroment and the entire ecosystem.

    The main problem in Kenya is land issues accompanied by corruption. You can be approved by the government to buy/lease a land, set up a massive investment then upon completion, the same government will come to you and query how you acquired public land and so on so forth...later to be brought down ie, for building on riverbank, road reserve, school property....
