I’ve gone way overboard helping others, usually fearing that I may not have done enough.
But truly we must regard ourselves first , then our responsibilities.
I wish I had not tried so hard and tried to make others ‘ welfare so dependent on myself.
But I’ve realized that if we are burnt out, we can’t help anyone. So moderation is the key .
Otherwise we end up sacrificing ourselves.

Marcus Aurelius once said, 'Whenever you are about to find fault with someone, ask yourself the following question: What fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I am about to criticize?'
What are your thoughts on finding this balance in our everyday interactions? Looking forward to hearing diverse viewpoints!

The very family members who say that ‘they’ll run all over her’ are the ones that ‘run over us’.

Marcus Aurelius once said, 'Whenever you are about to find fault with someone, ask yourself the following question: What fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I am about to criticize?' This quote always reminds me of the power of kindness and introspection. Do you think there’s ever a situation where being too kind could actually backfire, contrary to Stoic values? I’m curious to hear your thoughts and experiences!

I would like to make the argument that what is being discussed here is actually not kindness but 'niceness'. It's an important distinction because niceness is a self-centered behaviour where you are acting in a pleasing behaviour, often at the cost of onesself. Kindness is an other-centered behaviour based on acting in the best interest of others. In order to be kind you need to have integrity and self respect. You see this played out in society in many ways, for example the nice guy syndrome. Sometimes the kind thing is to reject someone, or say a painful truth, or say No. Things that in the moment can bee viewed as not nice at all, but that are an expression of the persons truth and in the best interest of the others.

"The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts." - Marcus Aurelius
How might this Stoic insight challenge the notion that kindness could have detrimental effects on one's life?
