0:43 Paul Atreides Explained (DUNE Part One)
7:18 Dune Part Two Possible Story And The Path The Book Takes
10:19 Dune Messiah Breakdown
13:06 Children Of Dune And Paul's Death
Ok so in order to talk about Paul, we have to talk firstly about the Bene Gesserit. They're very complicated characters and the religion is pretty as much out for power as much as the rest of the characters in DUNE are.
Dune is very much about the idea that following messianic figures can actually be somewhat foolish and the Bene have used the idea of prophecy as well as superstition in order for lots of people to follow them without question.
In the book it's explicitly stated that they use religion in order to control the masses however the tv and film adaptations tend to gloss over this and instead paint Paul out as basically being the chosen one. This is pretty much a lie though and as we learn he was very much manufactured through science experiments carried out the religious order.
Now throughout the saga we very much question whether Paul is actually the Kwisatz Haderach or if he simply fit that role and thus everyone kinda followed behind him.
It was said that the Kwisatz Hadarach would have incredible abilities but as we see throughout the saga this is very much brought on by Paul's upbringing and the copious amounts of spice that he'd been subjected to.
It was a kwisatz hadarach give a dog a bone everyone's spoiling No Way Home.
As we discover more about the Bene Gesserit we learn that for centuries they'd secretly performed selective breeding processes which basically narrowed down the bloodlines so that they could prop someone up as a new leader of the people in order to control them all.
The Gesserit believed that the daughter of the Atreides should marry the son of the house Harkonnen and that this would bring the two sides together and usher forth a supreme bloodline that would very much be seen as the chosen one.
However, Jessica went against this and she chose to have a son instead because that's what Duke Leto wanted.
Thus Paul was born and he spent his early years on Caladan which is the ancestral home of the Atreidies.
The Bene Gesserit were furious over this but they didn't want to completely scrap the breeding processes that they'd gone through for centuries and thus allowed things to continue whilst they kept a close eye on Paul.
Paul was trained by his mother in the ways of the Bene Gesserit and his father also selected the best teachers from his ranks in order to instill knowledge within him. Now originally it was hoped by Leto that Paul would become a Mentat which are basically the human version of a computer. - Розваги

Yeah bro, I've been waiting for this kinda video from Paul (spoil'dib). Brilliant breakdown for the Kwisatz Haderach. Will you be doing anymore on any other characters???
Big ups Def.💯👊🏽
in 15min? nice work man. nice work. -JC
One thing that is not really brought out in the movies, but is in the books, is that Paul spends a lot of effort trying to find a path in his visions of possible futures that doesn't involve the Jihad. I'm currently rereading the book (first time in the 70's) and it is possible that Jessica's actions when they meet the Fremen determine the Jihad as much as his actions at that time. In very deep background this would make sense as the Atreides claim decent from the cursed ancient Greek house of Atreus. This "curse" would fit with the deaths of both his father Leto, a truly heroic figure, and Grandfather. Thus cursed, Paul is destined to have a bad end (a tragic hero at best, not a Messiah).
The "white savior" characterization is, of course, uber politically correct at this moment of our history. In the book the Fremen were descended from slaves and outcasts, so casting nonwhite actors into their rolls is probably consistent with what Frank Herbert originally wrote.
Really good overall, but a few notes - the correct pronunciation is hadaraK not hadaraCH; in the book Children of Dune Leto II married Ghanimah, but it was a political one and she had children with the other guy; and poor Alia was being driven crazy by all the voices of her ancestors in her mind so she turned to Baron Harkonen because he could silence the others but he was gradually taking her over, and in a moment of clarity after he totally took over for a bit, she jumped out a window and died.
The movies, and miniseries, don't always portray things accurately, but you did a great job of condensing it in this video.
Fantastic breakdown! Love how paul is asked early in the film: "do your dreams come out exactly as you dream them?", and throughout the entire film, they play with that theme. Like how paul dreams of jammis and thinks he's going to be mentor/teacher, only to find out that he was a "different type" of teacher later in the story.
Thank you
talk about learning on the job...
The dreams he has been seeing are actually a version of many timelines and the one where jammis was his teacher was if he let his mother die when they caught them
My fav part. It stuck with me the most
@@Crow6465 incredible! That is awesome to know!!
I think if this series ends with the end of dune Messiah I'll be happy with that as a conclusion. Anything after that is just a bonus
100%, all I really want to see is a three movie trilogy ending with messiah. Feels like a perfect way to do it, and I'm not sure how well the others would do in movie form. However, I am absolutely down for a series about children and God emperor after the fact
Its kinda crazy how almost all the books have satisfying endings with just enough to justify getting into another story
@@donnieuchiha ya my biggest worry with children of dune is that they'll have to have Leto and ghanima played by children. Just can't see it working. Its actually my favourite of the books though
@@CD-603 I love CoD, but I fear the same thing as leto and ghanima I feel have far too much weighty dialogue for a child actor to handle.
i agree 110%. dune messiah being a shorter book as well might make it more of a possibility. they might be able to pull it off in a 2hr and 40min - 3hr time frame
Paul - "He's not the Messiah-"
My brain immediately - "He's a very naughty boy!" 🤣
Hahaha
You know the one🤣🤣🤣
Underrated comment alert!
The movie unfortunately fails to mention that Paul is trained as a Mentat.
there is possibility that it was being keep under wrap & will be reveal in part 2 because there were some scenes between Thufir Hawat & Paul being cut.
They sure do
@@crozraven You're probably right, can't wait for a director's cut
They don’t even explain what a mentat is, and they’re only briefly in like 2 scenes
@@willroberts3991 unfortunately I don’t think we will get it. The director doesn’t like to do them.
Bladerunner 2049 has two hours that will probably never be seen and we really want it to be put out- alas it won’t
I really hope the Dune dualogy is successful enough to continue the franchise. I’d love to see the whole series adapted well!
The saddest thing about this entire series is that Duke Leto was very much a man who believed in ranks & saving lives as well as being great to all people. I don't think the Emperor ever needed to plot to kill him. I've always believed that if the Emperor brought Leto closer it wouldn't have been a threat and that Leto would have actually bolstered the Empires ranks and reach. I can't ever imagine Leto being a man who would try and assassinate or overthrow the Emperor. Whereas we all know that the Harkenans, not sure I spelled it right, would kill the Emperor without a second thought. I guess that would have been a short novel though 😅
“All governments suffer a recurring problem: Power attracts pathological personalities. It is not that power corrupts but that it is magnetic to the corruptible.”
@@nava03071987 poetic 👏🏾
The emperor is a jealous man, a jealous and dangerous man.
There was an interesting sub-plot with Duncan Idaho. The Bene Tleilax had been trying to create a ghola with the full personality of their dead predecessor and they thought that a moment of mental crisis would trigger the ghola to remember their past. They agreed to make an assassin out of Duncan Idaho knowing that the attempt at murder would create an intense moment of crisis that might trigger the ghola to remember his past. As the many of the characters have said in the books, there were plans within plans. Duncan is a major character in God Emporer of Dune in his ghola state.
It is also important to point out that Leto II becomes a hybrid human/sandworm and the whole purpose of him taking over was to teach humanity a lesson. Leto II says before his full transformation that "I will give them 4,000 years of tyranny so that they will never again want a man to rule over them." God Emperor of Dune, not my favorite book, is very much about the evils of empire and especially the Messiah complex which you see the seeds of in the previous books. Many people have called Dune a white savior story but it actually the opposite. Herbert was very much telling us about the dangers of the Messiah complex. What I find compelling about all of this is how here in the US, the Messiah complex is in full swing and we see how destructive and evil that this is in real life. Frank Herbert tried to tell us that the Messiah complex could only turn out badly, and here in the US we see the truth of that every day.
Good Deep Dive on Paul. Kyle did a decent job portraying him in the time givin with the 84 version. Timothy is better (a tad younger appearing) and there is just more room for the character to develop as he needs to with the new film. Hope they really flesh out Paul and the Fremen in Part 2.
Brilliant breakdown of Paul Atreides for any new fans or those a bit confused about the Kwisatz Haderach. We've only really just been introduced to him, he eventually becomes a proper bad ass when he starts fighting back against the Sardaukonen🤪.
Big ups Def.💯👊🏽
Thank you man
have you read the book or seen the 1980's film the real messiah is Leto 2 and theirs Pauls super dangerous little sister who's a bene gesserit and the best .
@@heavyspoilers always bro.💯👊🏽
Im a newbie to this theres so much to take in my head hurts trying to follow it haha wont lie i watched dune for timothee chalamet huge fan 💜 is paul the kwisatz haderach?? The movie was epic though loved it they did an amazing job
@@nataliepaterson294 not really but after he starts taking tons of spice and the water of life more of it being his sister and leto 2. But Paul is the best.
I would’ve quit acting after seeing post production of me running if I was James Mcavoy 🤣 Or at least sued the studio.
Excellent recap! I read the Dune series in the 70's yet it all comes back to me now.
You explained the story far better than any other videos. I've watched videos that took hours to explain and they only made me confused :/
Thank you
personally, I think Quinns Ideas does by far the best job of explaining the Dune series. The videos are long, but the books are FAR longer and for the videos to be any shorter you have to cut out a lot of information and themes.
@@123four... 100% agree about Quinn's channel. Not to mention that there was quite a bit of incorrect information in this video. After watching it I have to wonder if Paul actually read the books.
Thank you for this breakdown! New casual DUNE fan. Will support all great content on the movie!
Thank you Paul 🙏🏾 timing is impeccable as always
The weirding way wasn’t related to sound, that was a David Lynch directorial decision as he didn’t want kung fu in space (missed opportunity).
Yes! No one gets the weirding way right. It is a form of martial arts. It gets confused with the Voice which is a manipulation of the vocal cords to speak in a pitch that is irresistible to the listener. Along with astute powers of observation a well trained Bene Gesserit could “cold read” just about anyone to predict their thoughts and actions, tell if they’re lying, and manipulate them without any violence. Of course, if none of that worked or they just didn’t have the patience they could murder them before their victims knew what was going on with the weirding way. They can also manipulate their body chemistry at the cellular level and convert poisons in their bodies which means both cups can have iocane powder and defeating them would be inconceivable!
They will definitely reveal Paul being a Mentat in Part 2, Villeneuve confirmed in an interview that there will be greater focus on this. They made the whole Kwisatz Haderach possibility and the Paul's visions the main focus of Part 1 so adding his Mentat abilities on top would've been overkill for a movie that's only 2.5 hours. In my opinion, it's the best decision that they cut out the Mentat parts and saved them for Part 2
well, they didn’t
What a liar you are. Yikes
@@twotime4451lol i was thinking this😂
Another amazingly in-depth character study, Paul. Cheers!
Outstanding breakdown Paul. Felt like a true knowledgeable fan. You initially Slept on the new film but after drinking the Water of Life, THE SLEEPER HAS AWAKENED! Henceforth you will known as Paul Muad’Dib
Amazing breakdown about the Paul character.. Thank you🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I knew it that our Paul(Heavy Spoilers)was the Chosen One!!
His son is the chosen one and perfect fuse of his dna with chani
Thank you for this. I just got into Dune this past week. The films are amazing.
Thanks for the run down 👍
Based on this description it sound like things get really stupid after the first book.
It gets gradually more insane as it goes on
It's not "stupid".."weird" and then "Horny weird" is better 😆
I can't want to see part two...I hope that they show just how much Paul's quest for vengeance turned him from hero to foe
That's cool dear, how're you beautiful lady😊
Great break down thank you. Makes me wanna watch the og now.
Amazing analysis of this character.
Gah! You nicked my give a dog a bone pun! (Though I only sang it in my mind, lol).
Another great video. All dune and dusted!
cheers mate, was literally editing some audio then gonna reply to your email
Great job. Keep it coming!
This is the best tl;dr for DUNE on the entire internet, thanks
Thank you
That was a great breakdown of Paul
I want this director,to make a Avatar the last Airbender movie to be visual like this one , pure art
Yeah Denis is a good director but when it comes to sci-fi stuff he is pure genius. Seems to not let even the smallest detail slip
Awesome! Thanks
Don’t know why people get mad about spoilers not having a warning when his name is literally a WARNING!
Awesome break down
Great vídeo! Great job!
I highly recommend Michael Moorcock's critique of Dune, which he calls an adolescent power fantasy of authoritarian feudalism. Moorcock, of course, is an outspoken anarchist whose own work is about the dangers inherent in allowing either absolute freedom or absolute order to rule, and how the balance between the two is always both fragile and temporary.
Sweet summary!
This movie hits different!
Love your videos bro 🙌🍪🙌
Thank you
I believe Denis's DUNE will reveal that Paul also a mentat in part 2. Bear in mind, there was some scenes being cut that involved Thufir Hawat & Paul. In fact there are plenty of scenes being cut that I think the movie could have a 4 hour run time.
But they never even explained the concepts of mentats in the first movie. They had to condense everything into a movie format, which is why I think it would have been better as a television series.
DIRECTOR’s cut please!!!
Great stuff
Thanks for the breakdown, Paul! Sooo excited for Part 2! What do I want to see in Part 2? I want a cameo from Sting! ;) (but maybe not so much. haha)
Great job!!!
Thank you for this great information on the character of Paul, from Dune. Excellent video Paul, not from Dune. ;)
Do Duncan Idaho!!! Why is he the most used character is the books? I'm curious to know why isn't the book series called " The many lives of Duncan Idaho"
yes pls. do more dune videos
Solid video.
I'd looking forward to part two too.
This Kevin spoilers biopic is spot on!
Dune ya mom...😂😂😂 hilarious good 1 there.
I'm late to this dume thing but very thorough breakdown. I now know what I'm so entertained by now. Thanks.
Great review! Minor detail, but the sound-based Weirding Way from the 1984 movie was their attempt to deal with an otherwise difficult concept to show on screen, which is that it’s more like a minor manipulation of space-time that makes it seem like the practitioner is teleporting and fighting with premonition. I think the newer movie tried to show that more supernatural speed in Weirding Way combat.
The weirding way is just BG space karate.
Thanks for all the hard work! Ya chump!
Ah mate you really didn’t have to! Thank you so much.
Amazing video Spoiler Man 👍
Good video
Coordinate Titan, Attack Titan. Founding Titan. It’s all coming together 😂
I needed this video cuz I didn't understand anything in the movie
One of the best characters ever written.
Keep doing what you do brother. I’m hooked on your breakdowns. Going back to see the things you find on ur .25 speed breakdowns.
“The danger with people like him, America's Super Soldiers, is that we put them on pedestals. *They become symbols. Icons. And then we start to forget about their flaws”*
-Helmut Zemo, MCU
The problem with UA-camrs trying to jump on subjects that are built on books is you get incorrect information because these youtubers don’t have time to read the source material this start spreading incorrect information.
DUNING YOUR MOM hysterical you are very entertaining and know your stuff great job
I might have a kid one day if they could grow up to be a Sandworm. Well done, Paul, you've clearly appeased the Dune-obsessed.
lol that's where the series loses me
@@heatherbukowski2102 Really? That's where I realised the series was something truly special. God Emperor is the best Dune book to me
I can totally understand both of your opinions. It may not happen in our universe, but I would love it if the Dune movies made it that far in the story.
just finished watching Dune 2. the 2nd books (and the children of dune) sounds a bit of a depressing end to Paul, nonetheless, they have foreshadowed that in the movies as well. Thank you for summarizing this and also using visuals to aid the narrative; great work.
Paul has the classical "Tragic Hero" arc like the Greek stories. He's trapped by his fate. We love the rise and fall with him......goddamn I love that boy.
More dune videos pls
Another Quality description of Dune/Paul/Benne Jesaruit? Cheers HS
🙃I've got to watch you're eternals vid now sense I've seen it
I love Kyle McLaughlin & David Lynch working together! Haven't seen the new Dune. Commenting for the algorithm 😄
Spoilers about book down here. You've been warned
I really like Dune. Movie and books. I'm a fan of books even tho I started reading short time ago, like a year or something. And you all probably don't care (lol) but I'm sad that they didn't include the important event when all rich ppl had a dinner, it was really good in book. Also some characters are not developed enough, like Thufir Hawat. Mentats in movie are only because they exist in books, they don't do basically anything important here. And also the Yueh treason. In books, we knew from the beginning he is the one that will help the harkonnens , but we actually felt a little bit sad in books after the treason, because he was more developed and we know him better. In movie there is like one interaction between him and Paul.
But even they missed a few things in movie I still really liked the movie. I understand they had to throw away some things because then the movie would be definetly too long. Go watch it if you haven't yet.
Oh shoot that's kinda long
i agree with you! i feel like we might get reworked versions of these scenes put into the second part. it seems denis is kinda trying to adapt the story of the novel rather than adapting the novel outright, if that makes any sense lmao.
but yes! i do wish we got to see those interactions as well!
Thank you for the breakdown and details. It seems like a complicated hot mess.
it's probably been said already here, but sound is only part of *the weirding way* in david lynch's version of the duniverse.
And so it begins!
Would love to see this on Leto II and the Golden Path.
What was never explained, in any of the movies or the books, unless I seriously missed something is whether the Baron and his house would have ever been on board with a union of the great houses if Lady Jessica would have had a daughter? Given his hatred for their house, would that ever have come to be? For that matter would the Emperor ever agreed to such an alliance with how much jealousy he had for the Leto?
Didn't Paul have a son with Chani that was killed by the Harkonan.
The way I'm seeing the film we got as the strict theatrical cut.
I am dying to see the scenes that were cut for time and digestibility.
I hear me now HBO. I will happily give you money for the service of releasing a more complete version of this film at some point. Sooner the better so those scenes match the narrative and plot of coming sequels.
I plan to read the books so I'll save the end of the video for later 😉
Love it! Thank you!
I wonder if they'll show Alia's arc in detail. She has the worst life of everyone, man.
Paul Moadeab aka Atredies aka Usool (the secret name the fremin called him) Kwisat Hararack.
Well that took a turn
Do a video about the weird sex stuff from the last 3 books. Think of the Engagement numbers!
Now let's get into Paul
*phrasing*
I think Leto turns out to be the Messiah figure. Paul just led up to Leto.
Emperor: I heard they got you.
Baron: Who?
Emperor: Atrei-dez nutz!
Never understood why Paul could see the future, but (in the long run) made all the wrong decisions and down the line, family had to correct things. How did this happen
He saw the path, and tried everything he could to avoid making the choices he was required to to achieve that path. Humanity needed a tyrant and a scattering to ensure that humanity would survive indefinitely. Plus couldn’t do it, because he LOVED too
Hard. His mothers flaw was his flaw. Once Chani was dead he lost the desire to fight on, tried to die and abandon his children and he even failed at that.
Read the book and watch the 1980's film, If I remember right the real messiah is Leto 2 who brings Arkis back to a lush moisture full green planet and theirs Pauls super dangerous little sister who's a bene gesserit and the absolute best taking out the baron. Paul gets super fucked up on spice which also makes most tribes believe do to the atreides power.I wonder what way their gonna prossed with the next one but Denis's verizon was awesome so far. Probably should of watched this before writing all this lmao but I love trying to understand it as a kid watching it and actually I'm gonna go watch 1980s Dune rn.
When your mom's a Bene Gesserit and your dad's a Mentat
"Take that, Goku!"
Great Inside, thx 👍
Part 2 is going to be awesome!
Jessica exercised freedom of will and it all begins from her.
That was really good, thank you.
Once again fantastic video I love Dune. ❤
I think the one thing I would’ve added would be the fact that he was trying to avoid the jihad with every decision that he was making as he looked into the future.
9:05 most definitely a acid trip
Ahhhhh the movie that is a Zendaya perfume add
Holy shut was that James Macavoy
Does the Bene gesserit get defeated at all in Dune? Because it seems that throughout half of the story of Dune Messiah and Children of Dune good not existed
a mix between Germanicus and Nerones, all about claudians
the house of Alpheus .
Dune should have been a tv-series.
Yeah tbh I would love that. It will last longer then, and characters could be more developted in tv series.
@@jachuu308 yeah to be honest
Yeah not a bad breakdown of the films and TV shows. But please read the books, they are way better.
