- Rebuild of a Victorian Singer vintage sewing machine from 1885, and Improved Family machine, it was the precursor to the Singer Model 15, the longest running machine manufactured to date, its still made today, this machine was the prototype, and its a beauty.
Beautiful paint job and love the color matched irons! My 1948, 15-88 has decals and a paint job in much worse condition than this much older machine. Now I don't feel bad about wanting to re-paint completely!
I chanced on an Improved Family from 1886 at a resale shop in December and it runs beautifully. It had a motor and light attached along with a big "singer" plate which makes me think that it was sent into Singer at some point in its life to be rebuilt. Except for the finnicky bobbin it's an incredibly easy machine to use and I've got it to sew thin leather and suede pretty easily. The blue and gold is really striking. Great video and I'm impressed by how smooth the paint and decals look. Great job sir!
Thank you so much, would you join my FB group, Sew Far North, and share some pics of your machine, and some work you do on it.
I'm afraid I'm not on Facebook. I'm sorry I didn't respond to this comment until 6 months late, but I've since co-sponsored as sewing club at the high school where I teach so finding that IF really lit a fire for me. Thanks again for the video!@@sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746
What a beauty this machine is! The table, legs, and ironwork on the base came out spectacularly well. Thank you for showing us using it as a free-motion darning and embroidery machine. I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the restoration.
Thank you. That’s it for this one for a while, I need to try to find a new feed dog shaft, if I can’t I will make a free motion needle plate for it.
I love that you wore a colour coordinated sweater to finish the job. The machine is just beautiful.
Thank you! 😊
I'm glad i found your video on this machine, as i recently found one of this (1888) in a barn at my in laws, its in pretty bad shape. I cleaned up a lot and got it moving, but the sticky residue is like you described it. I could clean it for weeks. Maybe i should think about repainting as well.
Thanks so much for making your content, so helpful and entertaining!
Very nice work. Thanks for the idea of using wooden 2x4s to prop this thing up, that's what I'm going to do to clean my White Rotary machine.
That's what I call _improved_! Congrats, really satisfying watch and great result.
The treadle is beautiful!
Beautiful work. I do very similar work and have a couple hundred machines with most over 100 years old. They are very addicting.
Thank you, it would be nice to see some of yours
I seen this same machine come up for sale near me and missed out , had i known it had a full open back and that awesome logo under the bed i would have grabbed it up ...nice job 👍
Thank you, I did enjoy this refurbishment, it’s a lovely machine.
Wow! Just wow.
Wow amazing
You can make these pump by themselves I think? If you make the needle push the foot pump below it goes by itself However you can also make one long needle one the needle the other pushes the foot pump there are other ways to make this work too
Fabulous job! What kind of bobbins does it use?

I have an 1889 model of this machine that I just restored. I refinished the original cabinet and treadle. Question: what is the wooden peg on the table behind the machine for?
The peg is for the machine to rest on when it’s leaned back.
👍🐈⬛
Just loved that! What is the handle at the back for?

Do you mean the rest, it’s to rest the machine on when it’s tipped.
Ah, now I understand, many people make a device to use cones of thread with a mast. Useful rest, a bit of muscle power is needed to keep the machine where you need it.

Wonderful work Dave. Tell me, do you put any felt pads inside to help with oiling?
These didn’t have felt pads, I leave them as they were made, if you use them a lot, oil them a lot, if a little, oil a little.
I have my 3rd great grannies 1874 Domestic brand coffin top. Do you know where to get new decals? I have no idea if it ever had any, but the rest of the machine has been well cared for and is fine. No evidence (literally) of decals though, and no one alive can remember if it had any either. Thanks
Hi, can you contact me on my Facebook group page, Sew Far North, and we can discuss options for your machine.
@@sailingtessbesssewfarnorth1746 I am not on any social media any more. I got off in 2015 and I am happier for it, more time for hobbies is a plus. Thanks for the offer though.
Ah ok, try www.singerdecals.com they do a whole range of decals.
