    The first time I watched this I had just woken up and thought that a shift light was a light near the tail lamps to tell other people that you're shifting.

    Could use the signal from your oil/water temperature sensors in the dashboard to actually control the shift-light speed, so if the engine was still cool the shift light would go off at like 2.5k, gradually increasing the "legal" speeds you could safely use as the temperatures climbed towards optimal range. Might need an Arduino in the middle for the conversion, but it would be pretty cool if your dashboard reminded you (and whoever else is driving your car every once in a while) to take it easy when the temps are not right yet.

      I'm an Aussie and had no idea the r34's are that rare over there, that's pretty interesting.
      Did they not deliver that many over there at the time or at all (guessing the ones around might be special imports) and i'm curious about all the other earlier models?

    • @iambiggus
      @iambiggus 9 років тому +1

      flavourboss Nah, it was worse than that bro, it was illegal to drive them here at all, pre-2006 model. You technically could bring one over and drive it, but the first time you got pulled over and the man realized the car didn't meet DOT legalities (crash test, emissions, etc) ... turn out the lights, the parties over. Just wasn't worth it.
      I had heard you could jump through about a million hoops and dish out some serious $$ to get one of the old ones street legal in some states, but I never investigated that myself, so it could be more fiction than fact.

  • @JobeMinacum
    @JobeMinacum 11 років тому +1

    Well, you'd have to find the RPM signal wire. If you have a distributor, it's usually on there somewhere. The engine uses it for rev limiter purposes. You splice into that with the green wire, red wire is power (12v) and black is ground.

    • @squishydafishy
      @squishydafishy 10 років тому

      well they had a soldering iron. .cut wire, slide tubing on, make connection properly, solder, slide and shrink the tubing. properly done everything is peachy and much cleaner than tape. some will argue cutting the wire but i would do it that way. i hate electrical tape for doing stuff like this. it gives a messy look imo and tubing is better. "but you never see it", ya well for me thats not the issue. never said they are wrong i just woulda done that bit different. guess i should have included the part about cutting the wire in first comment :P

    • @FrenchValleyAirport
      @FrenchValleyAirport 10 років тому

      squishydafishy it's hard to say this, but i think tape works just as good in this scenario. there's also the other wires tightly packed to hold the tape in place.

    the best way would be to have a dyno chart on your car. you can see the amount of RPM drop when shifting though each gear and look at your dyno chart and make sure you are staying in the peak power range. if your car is pretty stock or at least stock cams (if your N/A and not turbo) you can just go online and look up a dyno chart of your exact engine. make sure your are shifting in the area just before your power drops and make sure when the RPM's change from changing up your still in the power

    If you do have a turbo car you can still use this method if you have the stock turbo on your car still as the spool of the turbo should stay about the same. if you do have an upgraded turbo be sure to try and find a car modded similer to yours. (cams and turbo size. these are the two that will change your power band the most) of course taking your car to a dyno and getting a print out of your car would be idea but sometimes not in the budget. Remember max power is not always shifting at redline

  • @sniglom
    @sniglom 8 років тому +32

    This is not how it works. The optimal rpm is not the same for every gear, normally the optimal shift comes at a lower rpm for each gear, in order for the engine to use a narrower and narrower part of the power band.
    This is easy to see if you overlay the power curves for each gear. You can build these power curves if you have the gearing ratios and the power curve for the engine.
    On my bike, (CBR600 F4i), this means that going from first to second, I should rev it to ~14100rpm, while going from fifth to sixth, I should rev ~12500rpm.
    I have created a tool in javascript for showing optimal shifts and comparing power for different engine types. github.com/snigel/MoreThanDyno

    • @MrGusman200
      @MrGusman200 8 років тому +2

      When setting up the shift light you need to factor in reaction time of the driver. So you should have it light early then depending on the gear you are in the reaction time adds rpm. Also reaction times are really only useful for changes into 2nd and maybe 3rd (in a majority of vehicles). Beyond that you will have plenty of time to realise what speed you are doing.

    • @sniglom
      @sniglom 8 років тому +1

      The reaction time does not change the fact that the optimal RPM is changing between gears.

    • @MrGusman200

    when the power starts dropping up the rev range, optimally you're looking to accelerate between peak torque till peak bhp, basically the shift light should be set at the top of the powerbands range, to get this sort of information its best to have a dyno printout

    The "T" in GT-T stands for Turbo. It has the RB25DET single turbo engine. The GT-R has the RB26DETT twin-turbo.

    The headlights are yellow on an r34, keep it looking great. The easiest fix Is dipping a cloth in you're power steering reservoir and rubbing it on the headlights.

    • @Zonda1996

      Dipping a cloth into any R-Chassis power steering reservoir = still a dry cloth though

    I understand. Take a look at the 2012 Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Tail Light. It's round as well, but it fits into the body, not like this, a couple of round lights that fit into a piece the fits into the body. If they fit into the body, it would be far more appealing to the eye. That's all I was trying to say.

    isn't the optimum shift time different between gears? i always thought that when these come built in by the manufacturer there would be a lot of computation involved to determine the optimum shift time

    • @RhodokTribesman
      @RhodokTribesman 9 років тому

      Optimum shift time in a racing situation is just before the redline

    • @theoriginaldylangreene
      @theoriginaldylangreene 9 років тому

      +LoganThe Llama Depends on the car.

    • @RhodokTribesman
      @RhodokTribesman 9 років тому

      Dylan Greene It's just before the redline. That's when the engine can't really produce any more power in that gear, so you shift

    • @theoriginaldylangreene
      @theoriginaldylangreene 9 років тому

      LoganThe Llama If an engine is say under turbo'ed, it may run out of puff 1000 revs or more before the redline, then it's more prudent to change gear so as not to waste the power band of the next gear. Most modern eco cars have cam lobes cut to produce power very low down and also run out of power at the top (though variable valve timing helps), to keep the car in the power, you can also change gear earlier. Unless you have had your car on a dyno to see the exact power curve, you won't know the most efficient shifting point either.

    • @Gigaguenther
      @Gigaguenther 9 років тому

      +Dylan Greene yes, all the boring old road cars i know have their max torque way before the redline. my last car peaked at around 5,5k, according to both the spec sheet and driving experience. BUT -the only thing i really want to know is: does the gear you're currently in affect the optimum shift point? because i can't really see it being one exact rev number throughout the gears unless the gearbox is tailored exactly to that individual engine

    to true my bad but just because the dash says it can go 180 doesn't mean it will come close, it could go even faster its not restricting anything. all silvias say they can only go 180 as well its just a definitive design in Nissan.

    GTS-T was only for the R33 Skylines.
    GT-Ts are rear wheel drive and have a 2.5 litre engine with a single turbo, whereas GT-Rs have AWD, twin turbo 2.6 litre engines as well as 4 wheel steering.

    Even if they wanted to, they can't at the moment; Rake posted on the forum that he crashed it and the insurance didn't pay out, so he's had to wait about 6 months to both fix the damage and find a new front bumper. It's fully repaired now though.

    Still sounds excellent! Hope they continue to make Inline-6 Engines, BMW gave up also..Inline-6 is balance and sounds good but is too long, that why Nissan mainly manufacture V6, which can be as short as half of a I6

    tach signal into the shift light? are you splicing the tacho harness and then continueing the wire as it proceeded into the cluster? for example; tach wire> split into shift light, and into original harness to be plugged in? is the the tach signal your trying to find just hold amperage and not engine revolution data? I know the description says "
