Generally you would put the blow off valve close to the throttle body on the cold side of the the intercooler. The chattering sound (known as flutter sometimes) is called reversion and is the sound of the air that stopped at the closed throttle butterfly running back through the spinning turbo. A BOV prevents this happening. Often manufacturers put BOV's on to keep the cars quiet!
169 kw (227 hp) 284 Nm) (209 ft·lb) 2.0L (1998 cc) SR20DET 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC with intercooled turbo. Add full 3inch exhaust, HKS performance filter, boost to your tasting and then revisit year 7 maths or use calculator.
re circulating will do the same job as a factory BOV and are generally more accepted by the authorities as far as modifications. Atmospheric venting BOVs are usually 'for track use only'... that said you can get hybrid that do both! or are adjustable
It might be important to note that if the car uses a MAF sensor, it needs to keep the recirculation venting in order to run correctly. If the car uses a MAP sensor, then it can be either way(recirculating or atmospheric). And, if the car comes stock without a BOV, you'll need to get a custom intake coupler or pipe that give you a flange to hook up the BOV to.
Well I rb25det'd my 240sx and the factory bypass valve or recirc valve was shite. I have a turbo xs bov. You said I need special stuff to install it. I have a full Mishimoto intercooler kit and I need to install a bov. The rb25det has a recirc valve. So couldn't I just install the bov in the system anywhere and it'll work? Obviously not on the maf side. So what does that have to do with the maf? The maf is reading the air going into the turbo which as far as the ecu is concerned, it's the same as running the maf in front of the throttle body. So I'm confused. Can you elaborate possibly?
@fastvpbt1 Yes. We've made two videos about it. Check out channel. It's called BLOW OFF VALVES MYTHBUSTED. We've even installed one on a BMX to prove you can install on anything.
A4 Recirculates the extra pressure, only time you can actually hear it is if you remove the airbox, installing a BOV can mess with your ECU, since the MAF will be missing the extra shot of air comming from the turbo, and it will compensate by leaning out the mixture, not a lot, but it might cause trouble over time.
You can install a blow off valve on a diesel. Blow off valves generally actuate when the throttle body slams shut. Most diesel engines don't have the standard butterfly valve throttle body. That is why almost all diesels use waste gates.
the EPA might not agree with your engineers certificate as there's no good reason to have a bov venting to the atmosphere, recirculating valves are fine as that is what most cars pass the design rules with in the first place
@rangerjavi hatchback just refers to the shape of the trunk, whether it's independent from the cabin or not. some refer to it as 2 door, others call it 3. all the same thing.
I am a laws man but I love cars and mods specially weapons something CA is strict on. I love Socal and wouldnt trade it for anywhere else. My brother used to have his car modded and was driving just like anyone else like he always did, but the moment the BOV went off a police car pulled us over and gave us warning and to remove all mods. And he gave us a warning because when he was young he said police towed his STI and he died inside. lol
Hey mod gods one of your biggest fans here Guys please clear something up for me can you put a bov on a 2000 forester gt stock turbo ppl say you will lose/waste boost ? Cheers
Yes, but it's not always called a Blow Off Valve, aka BOV. On cars such as DSMs, it's called a recirculating valve. On a stock turbo Mitsubishi Eclipse, when the throttle is released the boosted air has to go some where, so they vent it into the intake before the turbo, behind the MAF. That way all the air is accounted for. When you vent to atmosphere, it makes the PSHH! sound Stock eclipses run extremely rich and almost die when you do. Tuning and proper mods fix that. Some can, some can't.
is the flutter you can here ok to have or will it need adjusting? im sure its ment to have a flutter because of the cold air intake fitted but i just want to make sure ;) theres no boost loss and everything seems fine
3" exhaust is a good mod. Performance filter is a great way of wasting your money, I've never seen a company be able to prove that a filter can increase hp given dyno time. Adding boost is fine, but the sr20 standard turbo is rubbish and you should really upgrade various other parts before merely add boost. Gt28 bb is a good start, with an air management computer or better, new fuel system + reg + extra cooling = 170rwHP. Turning up boost till you hit 200fwkw or awkw is asking for trouble.
What the hell are you talking about officer? This right here is the official Might Car Mods test track. The only public road around here is the one going to your wife
Wastegates on turbochargers regulate how much exhaust gasses bypass the hotside turbine, which then regulates how much pres is producd, ie boost. The tu-tu-tu is the pressurized air being forced back through the compressor. Which is bad. Any type of pump will be damaged by back pressure being forced wrong way through. Not immediatly, but it does speed the demise of the turbo. The Tu-tu-tu sound is a fad in Australia because people like the sound it makes, not because it's good for the car.
you dont tune a blow off valve, it just releases compressed air from the turbo that didnt get shoved into the block before you closed the throttle otherwise it would come out the turbo backwards
Oliver Turpin thanks, but I'm very aware of how the BOV works. I have designed, tested and built my own turbo systems, but I'm not sure how to properly set a BOV and what it should sound like when it's working properly or improperly. I know you don't want it releasing or creeping boost and you don't want it not releasing enough boost, so how do you set that up properly and test that? that's what I'm asking....
very well, but still it doesn't need tuning, the BOV continually releases air stuck between the turbo and the cylinder until you get your foot back on the gas or there is no air left to release. basically, when you are off the gas a spring holds the BOV open and likewise when you are on the gas, the pressure of the air inside holds it shut
Oliver Turpin ok so just play with the tension screw until it's not leaking boost and not too tight to release boost pretty much? I have an old school blitz super sound from Japan that's adjustable and i just wasn't sure on how to get it set right
yeah if you need to you can adjust the tension screw but its generally fine as it is, doesnt make a whole lot of difference (noticeably anyway) but if you want max performance you should spend some time on it
I have a question, from what it depends the sound of the blow off when you clutch cuz some cars make sounds like pshhhhhh, some make sounds like sutu tu tu tu
Hey, love the show. I've got a 2002 WRX that I want to put a BOV on. My question is that since it's an auto, is it still a good idea to put a full atmospheric BOV on an auto trans since they shift quick? Or will the BOV not be able to keep up with the auto trans?
One of my favorite cars ever. Wish I can afford it. To bad it was'nt shipped to america by Nissan. Little beast can beat almost anything. SR20 all the way. The only thing that can make it better is a VVL head.
I just want to come back here and say this was the video that got me into cars way back in 2008. Amazing to see how far you guys have come. Awesome.
Must of taken forever to make your test track look like an average city block.
i sure love testing my cars on "the test track"
This is one of the funniest things we've read for a while. Thank you for the entertainment.
Cheers mate
Hey boys I have one question can you make one video does dump valve walk in normal car please
Generally you would put the blow off valve close to the throttle body on the cold side of the the intercooler. The chattering sound (known as flutter sometimes) is called reversion and is the sound of the air that stopped at the closed throttle butterfly running back through the spinning turbo. maaaaaad
@2:28 attach 62 zip ties and your done
Just watched the new 2022 vid and came back to the start. Great stuff boys
OH WOW!! looking back from your newer stuff, this is so retro!! you guys have come a long way, and i'm happy to see you're still making stuff!
6 years ago!!! crazy!

Watching this in 2016
I went to adjust the quality and then realised the upload date.
It almost like watching a parody hahah they look so Different and that intro was so Old school xD
Watching in 2018
2016 was the best year hands down
Re-watching from the original video, the boys have come so far but yet still true to form and keeping it real :)
Watching this in 2017 👌🏼
I hate 2020 so far but some joy from mighty car mods
Need MCM action!!!! this is MCM gold. just what the world needs, Laughs and smiles :)
the BOV is for turbo charged car only. A good quality BOV hold pressure better for better acceleration.
169 kw (227 hp) 284 Nm) (209 ft·lb) 2.0L (1998 cc) SR20DET 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC with intercooled turbo.
Add full 3inch exhaust, HKS performance filter, boost to your tasting and then revisit year 7 maths or use calculator.
yall should make a video useing diffent types of BOV and the sounds they make keep up the good work love the episodes
re circulating BOV's are fine!
wish i could just look around in my drive way and say "HA, there's one!"
Can you now?
@@Lolvi6 breasts
God I love these old MCM videos
I am super glad to come back after all this time. Recently bought my first snail powered car
Wow now I know I'm getting old when I see these blasts from the past 😊
I remember watching this as a kid just for amusement. Now for installing a blow off valve on my turbo’ed car lol
the bov will sound regardless of road speed it's more about the load and amount of pressure the turbo is creating
e

Nvm. I reread and I understand what you mean now. Sorry. I have a flange that mounts the bov. You're right...they don't specify that in the vid.
Yeah these DIY videos don't teach anything.
@fastvpbt1 Yes. We've made two videos about it. Check out channel. It's called BLOW OFF VALVES MYTHBUSTED. We've even installed one on a BMX to prove you can install on anything.

Video awesomeness doesn't come much greater.
That car is sick AF!!! Awd SR20det!!! Hell yes!!!
my friend's blow off valve sound is the same as that car. plz let me know that sound is illegal in nsw????
That just made my day a whole lot better, thanks
This will only work on turbo cars. A normal MK5 Golf GTI can also run an atmos venting BOV (DV valve) but it needs to recirculate 50%.
i like that you put entertainment into car modifying lol its funny! 5/5!
Yes it is necessary.
u guyz have made that car a badass one good job!
@PianoLT We've shown BOVS on the VW/AUDI 1.8t this in our BOV Mythbusted episode and in our Making The Ultimate GTI Episode.
I love your "test track," the open road. :)
People learn by asking questions. It's okay. No the blow off valve won't work without a turbo.
Love those Nissan Gti-R. I have one of its precursors from 1989.
@Lolwut240 The smallest hose is a vacuum hose, so it needs to be connected to a pipe coming from AFTER the butterfly throttle in the intake manifold
Yes you can, I have one on my turbo diesel Holden Colorado. Anything will a turbo you can install a blow off valve.
the EPA might not agree with your engineers certificate as there's no good reason to have a bov venting to the atmosphere, recirculating valves are fine as that is what most cars pass the design rules with in the first place
Watch in 2019, yeah i like this...
Nissan Pulsar GTi-R with sr20 looking good
Yes. There's a chance that you already have a stock bypass valve the recirculates into the exhaust. You'll just be replacing that.
@rangerjavi hatchback just refers to the shape of the trunk, whether it's independent from the cabin or not. some refer to it as 2 door, others call it 3. all the same thing.
lol at 1:15! I like your channel, it's pretty fun and somewhat informative. Good Job
Yes
Watching in 2018?
Yep
watching in 2019
lmao these guys are awsome...They should have there own tv show
16 years!!! Messiah on a Unicycle!
Now this is quality
you can hook a BOV up to a non-turbo intake pipe, and run a vacuum line to it just like a turbo, it just wont really do anything lol
Hi, great video,
What s the difference between the 1,0 and 3 liter car ,is the amount of the fuel?
Please help.
Thanks.
No its the size of the engine 1l 2l 3l is 1000cc 2000cc 3000cc
Thats a crazy test track.
Hey mod gods one of your biggest fans here Guys please clear something up for me can you put a bov on a 2000 forester gt stock turbo ppl say you will lose/waste boost ? Cheers
I was so excited to hear the SSS! :(
these guys are cool... like the kinda guys you spend your late afternoon tinkering with your car then scoring some weed :P
12 years later
not always. if you put a turbo in an N/A car, you can install a BOV.

@camigar2 It's a big job; sometimes you got to re-do the seals on the engine so it can stand higher pressures
is the flutter you can here ok to have or will it need adjusting?
im sure its ment to have a flutter because of the cold air intake fitted but i just want to make sure ;) theres no boost loss and everything seems fine

Was this originally on UA-cam or was this like an actual show?
Allen Ashley this was really the. They have a show now. Lol in Australia on discovery channel

@camigar2 It's quite easy if you know your way around an engine, and the kit comes with everything needed.
12 years ago!!??damn..good😊😊
If your car holds in 1 second by accelerate and also makes a deep heavy whistle sound. Can it be failing or leaking bov ?
January 2024 and I'm watching this 😂
So much has changed
Oww yeah. Cable ties on intercooler pipes to reduce flexing. Cheap but hey, it works. :)
Watching in 2020!!!
If you put a hks blow off valve on a Audi b6 stock, will the sound improve a lot?
Watching this in 2018 ;)
you should vid on how to install a full turbo kit all together.
Haha. so whens the tv show? You guys are soo funny, awesome track by the way, haha. You's are in australia right?
GTiR are AWD
Why am i only just discovering this chanel in 2020???
@adf1100 Yup Sydney Australia
the purpose is to relieve pressure...not make noise anyways what psi is your wastegate set at?
First occurrence of "BRAAA-psshhh" noises in the show?
good video. now can we get a video on how to properly tune a BOV?
you dont tune a blow off valve, it just releases compressed air from the turbo that didnt get shoved into the block before you closed the throttle otherwise it would come out the turbo backwards

thanks man, read about it in wikipedia but it says there that it can damage your sparkplugs and catalysator n stuff?
This might be a stupid question ,but you can put a bov on any stock turbo cars , for example a golf gti 1.8t ?
i got a ? about the BOV which type did you use stiff spring or standard and whats the difference between them..great vids i sub!
Would it be redundant to put it in an auto or would it work the same?
You're also allowed Turbo on P plates in WA :)
@PianoLT
The HKS SSQV will work on VAG 1,8T
I like the smoother bov than the harder whistler bov
gday, i just got a nissan 300zx 90 model twin turbo and im wondering what mods you guys would rocomend. cheers.
take it down to the mighty mods test track.. just down the street more like it.
I have a question, from what it depends the sound of the blow off when you clutch cuz some cars make sounds like pshhhhhh, some make sounds like sutu tu tu tu
Black liquid boot polish, cheaper than forever black and lasts just as long.
Hey, love the show. I've got a 2002 WRX that I want to put a BOV on. My question is that since it's an auto, is it still a good idea to put a full atmospheric BOV on an auto trans since they shift quick? Or will the BOV not be able to keep up with the auto trans?

i have a daihatsu atrai kei van coming from japan any suggestions for a blowoff valve for this monster 3 cylinder engine
