  • Rare restored Super 8 footage of Evel Knievel's motorcycle jump at Minnesota Dragways in Coon Rapids, MN on July 16th, 1972. Evel scales 3 buses and 8 cars during this ramp to ramp jump, as a crowd of 30,000 onlookers cheer him on.
This restored footage is dedicated to Donald Tingum, who documented this historic jump on his Bell and Howell Perpetua Super 8 movie camera.

Man, all that buildup and then someone stands in front of the camera right as he goes off the ramp lmao. Some things never change.
That’s really cool footage, I’m glad that was found. Especially as someone that lives just up the road in Champlin and never knew Evil did a stunt so close. Hell I never even knew there was a dragway around here!

I was there at 6:45am in the pits with my cousin Dale and Sandy Meyer and son Chris. Dale raced a green GTX and Sandy raced a Road Runner. Chris and I walked the pits and at the end of the strip was Evel’s semi and trailer that was awesome no one would come out probably sleeping still it was early. After the jump I was on the track right next to Evel and my cousin Kim and Bridgette got a hug from him. Awesome day I will never forget

Fun fact - For a few years, Minnesota Dragways location was used by Yamaha R & D. Thanks to your grandpa Don Kat. Was a nice trip back in time kind of sad he didn't have better position around that lady's head but oh well.
Shared a hospital room with Evel til he could get a private room in a Tampa in '86.He was outta steam by then and the booze had eaten his liver up.Taught me to never meet your childhood hero's but nobody can take away what he did.Guy had balls, ambition and inspired a lot of kids my age.
    Wasn't a steam Harley I'm sure.XR750

The night before the jump, Evil had his pilot land his twin engine airplane on the dragstrip. His airplane wound up running into the rear of his big red trailer.
Both the truck/trailer and the airplane were parked by the control tower on the Pit side of the track.
They were both damaged....but not severely.
On the day of the jump...me and some other boys started climbing on the airplane until a man came and yelled at us.
It wasn't Evil......just one of his flunkies.

Yes sir I remember it was like yesterday he had Bob Truax build that steam machine that jumped the Snake River and they went through several evolutions of it before they got it right and ended up getting it wrong on the failed jump and what was it 74 or 75 good to see you take care.

UUMMM was not Minnesota Dragways located in Blaine, where Medtronic is, by 85th and I-35W??? I maybe wrong that was a long time ago, please let me know...

you are thinking of Twin City Speedway which was later known as Northstar Drag Strip. This was at Minnesota Dragways. which was located on what is now Main Street / County Road 14 in Coon Rapids at Avocet St. If you look at an old aerial of MN Dragways you will see the drag strip overlays the current Avocet Street. MN Dragways closed in '76. Next it was owned and used by Yamaha as an R&D site. Early 2000's it was scraped and developed into what is the current 'Wexford' housing development.
