It was 1970 or 71, he put $10.00 on the dash and that was a lot of $$ back then and said when I say go you grab it and it's yours. I was hell yea!! He said go & he floored it!! When I was in HS in the mid '70s one of my best friends (from a Ford family) had a '69 Mach I 428 CJ 4 speed, red and black like the one in the commercial, with a shaker hood and rear window slats. He paid $2,000 for it in about '75. At the same time, being from a Chevy family I had a '69 SS 396 (L78) Camaro, full cam, 4 speed, 4:11 posi, etc. I got it in '76 for $1600. Just a couple of HS kids with future classics. We used to cruise the strip but mine was wound much tighter and was more ill tempered than his mostly stock CJ. It didn't like stop and go traffic much, which caused it to run hot, and it got only 4 mpg on expensive (46 cents a gallon) 100+ octane, so we'd make an occasional pass down the strip but usually just backed them into spots at one fast food joint or another along the strip and let all the girls in Pintos, Gremlins, and Mavericks cruise past us.
And yes, I know exactly what you mean. Out of the 40+ vehicles I've owned since then, that SS is at the top of the list of the ones I'd love to have back.

Girls would literately run up and jump in pushing another girl out of the way when we all decided to go cruising or a day at the river. When a Ferrari 308 gtb gave me a thumbs up and a pretty woman new Anchor waived I should have found a way to keep it. I loved the whole thing! I was 10 years old in 1965, and was already a mini Gearhead. I knew everything about all the Big Three brands and models. My favorites were from the Ford Motor Company and the Chrysler Corporation. I really liked Mustangs, in 1966 my oldest brother bought a new black on black Mustang, it had a 289 4 barrel carburetor, duel exhaust and a 4-speed manual transmission. All his friends had Mustangs. As soon as I graduated high school in 1972, I bought a used 69 Mach l. A 351 Windsor, 4 barrel Motorcraft carburetor and an FMX automatic transmission. It had power steering and front power disc brakes. I thought it was the best-looking car ever made, and I still feel the same way now. My parents owned a 69 Chrysler 300, 4 door hardtop with the famous Chrysler 440 under hood. A very cool and powerful car. I have only ever owned Fords, Mercurys and Lincolns, and l Ioved all of them. When we sold my parents house 10 yrs ago i was clearing out the garage and there they were. I think it was over 500 of them of each dealers muscle cars. Over the next few years going to car shows i sold them and that’s how i bought my 70 Chevelle SS 454 like new. Still have enough left to get a nice Super Bee or GTO, haven’t decided yet.
