Evel Knievel's Jump at Minnesota Dragways
Rare restored Super 8 footage of Evel Knievel's motorcycle jump at Minnesota Dragways in Coon Rapids, MN on July 16th, 1972. Evel scales 3 buses and 8 cars during this ramp to ramp jump, as a crowd of 30,000 onlookers cheer him on.
This restored footage is dedicated to Donald Tingum, who documented this historic jump on his Bell and Howell Perpetua Super 8 movie camera.

Steam powered? You are confusing his xr750 with the snake river rocket.

Of course, some dip$hit stood up in front of a camera at the critical moment. This is why I stopped documenting local enduro and hare scramble motorcycle races. There’s always a dip$hit standing up at the critical moment.

The night before the jump, Evil had his pilot land his twin engine airplane on the dragstrip. His airplane wound up running into the rear of his big red trailer. Both the truck/trailer and the airplane were parked by the control tower on the Pit side of the track. They were both damaged....but not severely. On the day of the jump...me and some other boys started climbing on the airplane until a man came and yelled at us. It wasn't Evil......just one of his flunkies.

Evel knievel was absolutely insane .. he was clueless and the bikes he used where good for nothing .. how he lasted as long as he did is baffling …

Many people had jumped a dirt bike back in the day. Evel was the first to make it a profession. He took it to that level. That's what made him the king.

I was there and sat on thr grass right next to the strip. I was only 11 and it was totally not safe for me to sit there when the cars were racing but I drank from the garden hose back then too.

I had one of those Evel Kievel action figures on a bike with that plastic rip cord that you pulled out to launch it towards an awesome little jump you made. Damn thing tipped over right away every time. What a piece of shit.

Its funny to realize that a bone stock tesla right off the lot could take any 1972 pro stock drag car and 16 year old kids jump way farther than Evel did. I was 6 when this took place, Evel was the man but boy times have changed.

I saw Evel jump 13 cars the following year, October 1973 at Kaukauna Wisconsin. My dad also filmed the jump with a super 8 movie film camera which I still have and is posted somewhere here on UA-cam. He jumped on Saturday and again on Sunday. I was there on Saturday and he successfully jumped 13 cars. the following day, Sunday he crashed on his landing.

Fun to see for me since I'm from Minnesota. I can't believe anyone even SLIGHTLY into cars didn't know about Minnesota Dragways. There was also Twin City Speedway that had an oval dirt track on their property too. Spent many days at both of them. TCS has been closed probably as long as Minnesota Dragways. Fun fact - For a few years, Minnesota Dragways location was used by Yamaha R & D. Twin City Speedway's location is now a trucking/shipping company - BUT the sign (frame only) is still visible by the edge of 35W.

Thanks to your grandpa Don Kat. Was a nice trip back in time kind of sad he didn't have better position around that lady's head but oh well. Shared a hospital room with Evel til he could get a private room in a Tampa in '86.He was outta steam by then and the booze had eaten his liver up.Taught me to never meet your childhood hero's but nobody can take away what he did.Guy had balls, ambition and inspired a lot of kids my age. Wasn't a steam Harley I'm sure.XR750
