Rematch of 7mm PRC Terminal Ascent vs Hunter Precision

- I did this comparison a couple weeks ago but wasn't able to group my tried and trued Hornady 175 grain Precision Hunter ELD-X ammunition so I didn't consider the groupings of the Federal 170 grain Terminal Ascent as valid. After giving my rifle a good cleaning, I was able to get the Hornady ammunition to group so the question is how did the Terminal Ascent do?

Excellent. Thank you. Congratulations on antelope tag. And happy hunting.
Thanks!
Just came back from the range from shooting my new Seekins Precision Element in 7mm prc. I achieved extremely tight groups with the Terminal Acent. It was by far superior to Horandys garbage. I wouldn't waste money on the Hornady ammo
Congrats on the nice rifle!
My groups with the terminal is 2.5 inch groups with the 7mm prc
@@cameronwright5042 have you tried any other cartridges?
@@mike.hardy37 I bought the Bergara Carbon Ridge and All my groups are 1.5-2.5" with every ammo I can find. From Elm, Eldx, CX, Terminal Ascent. I'm going to send my gun back to Bergara.
I struggle to get the TA to group well. I really want it to work.
Just got the federal tipped fusion, going to see how they shoot
Nice, I recently saw that those were available. I'd be interested in how they shoot.
The TA has been shooting at MOA for me also. The eldm’s were sub MOA.
Like you, I was pulling for the 7prc to favor the federal.
A previous commenter mentioned his groups from the TA tighten up after his first box of TA so maybe we shouldn't give up on them just yet ;)
I get consistent 0.5moa groups with my 170gr terminal ascent in my custom 7prc
I don't think it's the ammo. His rifle just doesn't like it. Rifles are all individuals. My Seekins 7prc will shoot sub moa all day with the terminal ascent, and won't get better than 1.5moa with the precision hunter. Go over to my Ruger american.. and they swap. Shoots TA 1.5moa and makes clover leaves with the precision hunter
@HazardousRob I agree it's specific to the rifle. My .270 win shoots the cheapest Winchester Power Point ammo the best and can't group the premium ammo at all
@@mike.hardy37 yep, Ive had lots of rifles do the same. Unfortunately they just like what they like lol.
Got the same exact rifle terminal ascent was not shooting good at first ran about a half a box cleaned then shot rest of box its shooting half moa now i guess it was just a new barrel and needed to get dialed in idk really strange but it will drive nails now the terminal ascent is a much better bullet and u will get better velocity with federal i wouldn't give up on the ta just yet
Good to know! Thanks!
Six one way, half a dozen the other way. Either longer range with the PH ELD-X or better performance at a closer distance with the Federal Ascent.
In addition, the zero will change between the two, so, taking both along and would be a problem. So, to pick one and get that zeroed and ready is what I would be doing.
Agree, I always zero whatever cartridge I plan to hunt with.
@@mike.hardy37 Yeah, I phrased that awkwardly. Of course, you would. I realize now that it must have sounded like I had to tell you that. Sorry about that.
Back to the use of bullets. I believe in choosing the bullet for the job. I was seeing another case where a guy was asked why he was choosing one bullet over another. One could probably get him a ragged one hole group but it would not have the impact performance he needs for prairie dogs. Another bullet that has a every so slightly wider dispersion is chosen because of how it interacts with the varmint.
I was reminded that in this round of testing. And there are some who like the monolithic copper precisely because it is lead free and also likely to produce an exit wound. But there is that copper fouling thing. As you have already fixed that.
I am a bit curious as to why you chose to shoot prone over rocks than on the flat concrete. Thanks for sharing your video.
There was no particular reason other than just more space.
Hornady is having supply issues right now with powders
7PRC seems effected the most, they say they choose accuracy over velocity for their substitute powders so speeds are quite low from box velocity
Hopefully its a temporary thing and with other ammo makers staring to bring out 7PRC options that seem to perform as advertised the future looks promising for the newest 7
I heard that. It makes it really important to test the bullet drop with every lot I plan to shoot with!
Yes it's all over the internet about Hornady and their 7PRC factory ammo. The word is they started with Reloder 26 and ran out, so they used HD which is slower by 200fps. The good news is Federal factory ammo using the same bullet, 175ELDX is closer to 3000fps in some rifles. It's not that fast in any of my 7PRCs but close
Good luck on your pronghorn hunt. Do you load your own ammo as well? One thing I've noticed with factory ammo, in particular, the Hornady ELDX and ELDM is there is remarkable differences in POI from LOT to LOT. I went overboard and bought multiple cases of both when 7PRC first came out and I can shoot one lot of ammo in one of my 7PRCs and it shoot to my satisfaction and then switch LOT numbers, same ammo, and it not shoot well at all. I've noticed different powders and seating depths when I pulled them apart.
Thanks, I'm excited about the pronghorn hunt! I don't reload but want to get into it. That's good to know about the differences in lot numbers!
Most definitely the shooting stuff is, all aspects, especially rifle, is why I watch. I think it would be great to see the Backfire challenge. I watched a video last night where a guy has shot thousands of rounds through multiple rifles and never cleans or so he says. I just can't bring myself to storing rifles with dirty barrels. OCD I guess.
Good to know, I'll try to get some more shooting content out, especially the Backfire challenge! I like a clean barrel as well but it'll be fun to find out if it makes a difference.
@@mike.hardy37 I just picked up a new Tikka 270 stainless. It's my 3rd. I bought another one new last year and one used but the seller cleaned it to bare metal before shipping it. I inspected it with my bore scope as I do with every rile I buy before ever shooting it. I also clean them all before shooting. I also have another new Tikka stainless 7RemMag coming next week. The plan is to shoot either the new 270 or new 7RemMag and after my first cleaning as mentioned, I won't clean again and I'm going to compare accuracy over time. Ultimately one of the 270s will be rebarreled to 280AI
I am getting much tighter groups with the SIG Venari ammunition than the TA ammunition. I just doubt that the Sig ammunition performs as good as the TA at long distance.
I need to try some sig ammo but I don't think they make any for 7prc. I could try it in my .270 win though.
@mike.hardy37 A ballistic gel test on the Sig Venari ammunition at distance would verify the performance. It seems accurate enough, but how does it expand on target?
That would be a good test but it'll be a while before I get around to doing some ammo testing again.
Only in 2024 is 1moa groups considered "underperforming". Every hunter I know would be elated with that performance.
Yeah I'm probably being too picky but rifles and cartridges have been improving. When you know your gun can shoot 1/2 MOA it's hard to settle for 1 MOA.
I'd say federal won🤷 I guess I'll watch it
What Rifle are you shooting
It's an xbolt speed with a vynle rap on the stock.
Try Remington core lok
I do want to try them! Have you tried the Remington in 7prc?
@@mike.hardy37 yes they shoot nice .4 groups out of a CVA cascade LRH. Just a little hard to get them
It's in 7prc
Nice, I'll have to give them a try! Probably get around to it in November.
