- Discworld - No Commentary Playthrough
I love Discworld and have fond memories of this game, but boy does it fall in to some bad traps. Moon-logic puzzles, repetition and unclear objectives. I tried to keep it under four hours, but a playthrough of this game could easily be 6 hours+ if you wanted to make the storyline flow better.
I love how Death says "I'll see you later" - this is not even sounds like a threat, just a polite notice haha.
1,000 times more satisfying than actually trying to play the game and solve all of those ridiculous unsolvable puzzles.
The puzzled are book based. If you never read the book,...
@@fench1234567 Yeah, I only realized that years later when I read the book. I still think some are pretty ridiculous, like the gold thing you get from the sewage man. There is no way all of that was in the book.
The puzzles are absolutely not all from the books. Just the setting and plot elements
Breck in the day when they liked making games that were unplayable. These days people post negative reviews online lol
I reckon I only got through about 2% of this back in the 1990s - mind you, at that point I hadn't yet discovered Pratchett so I was at quite a disadvantage - to me it seemed like a surreal world indeed. Thank you so much for the play-through! I feel I've finally got my money's worth after all this time, haha! It seems like it's a pretty difficult game to play without any cheating or hints. That very final bonus scene is superb, though :)
This is one of the few point 'n' clicks from my youth that I failed to complete at the time, due to the absurd difficulty level. Having read a few Discworlds certainly helped! But not enough for me to finish the thing.
I just watched my older brother walk around aimlessly for hours 😂
This game needs a re master
Especially if they can keep the original cast in the game with the audio files
The sequel could definitely use a remake as well
Yes
That and disc world noir
Why
I do like the voice acting. And Eric Idle was just nuts great, he made the game look like a perfect mix between Discworld and Monty Python
My thoughts exactly!
They approached John Cleese first. He said he didn't do video games.
@@fench1234567 Wonder why :/
@@fench1234567 Wow😮 . Ironically, years later John Cleese will do the voice of Jasper in the video game Fable 3.
"Abridged or UNABRIDGED!!??" that line has stuck with me since 95'. This game was so strange and Pythonesque, never got close to completing but my friends and I quoted dialog from it for years.
"did someone get the number of that donkey cart?"
I want that on a tee shirt!
Loved the vibe of this game.
Characters 5/5
Humour 5/5
Sound FX 5/5
Graphics 5/5 (especially on Mac)
Music 5/5 (especially on Mac)
Playability 2/5 (impossibly random puzzles)
Played this back in the day but now having read the whole discworld series I realise what a mash up of books it is!!
I loved playing this game in 1997. Iy was the only game I ever stuck with to beat. It's such a cool game.
I remember buying this game around 1997 or 1998 on the Playstation. I had trouble finding out what to do next because it's not always clear, so I ended up calling the help line they had in the manual. It was emasculating.
Nothing to be ashamed of. Having watched this play-through I think it's probably very hard to beat this game without hints!
Nostalgiaaaa! I absolutely loved the voice acting and the design of this game when I was little. So nice to revisit it all again 😂❤
For me, when reading the many Diskworld books Eric Idle is Rincewind. David Jason was Albert, having David Jason as Rincewind was a rotten choice for such a brilliant character. This game was so funny, I'm amazed there's been so few adaptations. The Night Watch books just seems so easy to adapt for TV or games.
I think they turned Night's Watch into a show on Netflix or Prime or something but it was a "re-imagining" and as far from Discworld as they could possibly make it.
@@finnjake9430 watched the trailer for it and was utterly disgusted with what they've done to it mate. One of the most forward thinking and inclusive series of books and they've ruined it. Especially the watch, Thud being a tale of racial profiling and even cheri herself about someone fighting to be themselves and they've basically spat in the face of the source material. Really really disappointed me.
I ADORED this game when I was a child, so many happy memories of playing it :)
Wizard really should be spelled Wizzard if you ask me.
So. Much. Tony. Robinson! :) Very enjoyable. Only ever played the second DW game when i was younger. Never knew about this one.
Miss this game, thanks for the upload!
I played this as a preteen, and could not understand english, but i was persistent! After countless hours, i finally got.. outside the tower, but gave up after that.
The problem I had with this game was how so many of the puzzles were so random and didn't make sense. You just put a piece of gum in a chimney at random and someone falls out of it and the story moved on and I just went "Oh ok then".
Almost sums up the logic of Discworld at times. You kind of look in awe, shrug your shoulders, and move along. Just don't question it. Accept the reality of things and don't believe in Dragons. They don't exist.
This game is extremely funny to watch a longplay.
Playing it on the other hand
Perfectly executed. Love your work.
Thank you very much!
Thanks for the video. I love the books and didn't even know this game existed
I couldn't even complete the first act when I played the game about 25 years ago 🤣
3:29:16 so that's what happened with Rincewind and that book in Color of Magic.
Can I ask how you got the sound so good? Do you play it in dosbox? I tried both dosbox and scummvm, but didn't get the (midi?)sound sounding as good as in this video. I have the original CD version of the game. I do get music, but it sounds as if it uses a primitive midi-device or somethign like that. :-(
ScummVM using MT-32 sound emulation. Using this mode requires obtaining the MT-32 ROMs. More info: wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/User_Manual/Appendix:_Music_and_sound#MT-32_emulation
@@THESCUMMBAR Thanks! In the meanwhile I found out this is the director's cut version of the game. The first release has slightly different sound.
Tip: If you play it in dosbox and follow this tutorial for better midi sound: ua-cam.com/video/AfRItQFShtY/v-deo.html you can get it sound even better! Just config the game (in dosbox) to use "general midi" instead of SoundBlaster for the midi part.
I love this game so much, graphic wise it's a great mix between MI2 and COMI, and it makes sense since the game came in 1995, MI2 in 1991 and COMI in 1997.
i loved this game so much....
"that doesnt work!"
I often played PC games on a very poor quality PC build when I was a kid. Most games were slow and laggy. What I hadn't realised until now is that they probably often lacked sound too, so now I know why I only managed to get through about 0.2% of this game, hahahaha. I don't think the actual text worked properly either.
Finally!
Looking for this game after years...
X33
did you get the number of that donkey cot. I had no idea how to solve any of the puzzles in this game. im here to finally see what happens
I had this on PS1 and I never had the patience to go very far in it.
It was incredibly difficult and long
"Oook!" - The Librarian
Maybe the best adventure game of all time
I played this game I belive back in 1993 or 94. The game itself took about 80mb of the hardrive which only was on 200mb. And then I had to have space for windows 3.11 and DOS. I barely knew any english neither, and perhaps that's the reason I never managed to finish it.
The insane difficulty of some of the puzzles probably didn't help!
Hi I’m curious what version of the game you are playing? And on what platform?
This is the PC version using ScummVM
@@THESCUMMBAR thanks!
one of the best games ever , and a great book series
Wanted to play this but my old computer was in a stage where they might have chewed it up
I just sold this on eBay for £90 😂 unreal how much these are worth now unfortunately a new graphics card is worth more to me now. But I loved these games
Luckily you can just download the ISO
i recently beat this game using game guide after never beating it when I was a kid. according to the guide there was a glitch that doesnt let you progress past get to the end of the 3rd act. I always was stuck. Now as a grownup, I realize this game is nearly impossible to beat. Some of the puzzles or stuff you combine makes no sense. Also I picked up plenty of items that had no use. Which probally made it even harder.
The graphics are so good. The voice acting is excellent. The jokes funny. Why are the puzzles so bad they ruin the fun? I wish for a hack of this game with reasonable puzzles.
Why do I have the feeling, that some graphic designers from Adventure soft who made Simon the sorcerer, worked in the team of Perfect ten productions? Some of the elements in that game remind me of Simon the sorcerer...
The artists of Simon the Sorcerer are a bit mysterious actually. Paul and Maria Drummond. (Possibly a husband and wife team?) They really only worked on Adventure Soft games (definitely didn't do the Discworld games.) They seem to have retired from the industry after "The Feeble Files".
IMO, Simon the Sorcerer has the most gorgeous pixel art of it's era. It's a shame they aren't better known.
I miss the MAYUS when Death "talks"
I played he demo off a CD, but really didn't understand it in the least.
Brilliant game. Fancy doing lure of the temptress next?
Why does the music sound like that? Very... “beepy”.
Couse it was composed for MIDI, which was the popular, if not the only, option at the time.
Now you can find the .wav versions here in youtube as well. But even if they sound much clearer, sometimes I also want to hear the "beepy" ones :P
The music is in discworld is perfect, it really set the tone of the game.
Shame about the voices, I played it the first time without them and had a much better experience to be honest, hearing the dragon chant in this video immediately turned me down... same could be said for discworld 2, the only voice actor I liked was rincewind's.
@@Dasgath Eric Idle of Monty Python voiced him in this game
@@Dasgath I might be wrong but wasnt the standart Soundblaster/Adlib at this time (its different to midi, a Roland MT-32 would have midi quality).
Yeah the music didn't actually sound like that when you played this game... I've never heard this beep'y version before!
i am literally stuck at 3:36:00. Rincewind just won't walk past the molten pile
i saved and reloaded and it just worked idk man
I can speedrun this game...or used to be able to anyway
I never beat this game on ps1
I only played the demo on a PC games magazine disk.
If there is ever a live action movie of this, John Oliver needs to play Rincewind. They sound so similar, it would be perfect
There's already a live action version of a discworld book. Tim Curry is the Arch Deacon or something
David Jason played Rincewind. It was... not a great choice.
@@THESCUMMBAR I have a soft spot for his Rincewind. I know he doesn't exactly fit the character that PTerry wrote, but I do like him in that movie.
3:20:00 When you realize there is no wine :D
Est ce qu'il existe les trois discworld sur PlayStation 4 ?
Needs iPhone version!
I just clicked on this because of the color splash on the front.
Dragaga! Dragaga! Draga.. Dra Dra Dragaga!
How cute chest 🤣
3:10:20 man that's so badly done. What is that woah? A different voice actor?
