In this hatha yoga class we will explore the feeling of insecurity. Insecurity is defined as a lack of confidence or a state of uncertainty or anxiety about oneself. That sounds bad, that sounds like a feeling that I would want to get rid of. Our response to insecurity is to get rid of it or to establish security. The problem with this approach is that we continue to change our lives and paint ourselves into a corner until even the most trivial experiences in our life cause us an incredible amount of anxiety and stress.
In this hatha yoga class we will practice balancing yoga postures to open ourselves to the constantly changing impermanent nature of insecurity. We will find in bringing acceptance to insecurity we will find security. Our class moves through several short vinyasas or flows to open us to change. Balancing bridge pose, tiger pose, chair to tree pose, warrior one to a standing knee to chest pose. Downward facing dog to upward facing dog. Dying warrior will help us to let go and we will finish with crocodile pose, a poem on being insecure and a mudra for impermanence.
Yoga Postures/Asanas: Bridge Pose or Setu Bandhasana, Cat Pose or Marjaryasana, Tiger Pose, Tadasana or Mountain Pose, Chair Pose or Utkatasana, Tree Pose or Vrkasana, Warrior One or Virabhadrasana One,Downward Facing Dog or Adho Mukha Svanasana, Upward Facing Dog or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, Dying Warrior, Crocodile Pose

Like pain, if insecurity is denied, it is never transcended. Allow it to be, live in it,then through it. Melissa like always your classes are thoughtful, informing, challenging and personal. I am so grateful you are my teacher. Nameste

Wow! It doesn't get more real than being stung by a bee in mid -practice! Thank you for being a great example of adjusting to the insecurity of not knowing... (if you would be stung again!) and the disruption to your normal (unstung) routine. This is so apt for my own living situation right now as it is going through major changes and I am breathing into adjusting to the schedule of those changes that is not necessarily my own timing! Namaste.
+Barbara M thank you so much for sharing your experience of doing the class. I'm super happy that the class was helpful to you and hope no more bees will sting me during teaching :)
Always love the way you teach yoga.
+Giayen Wu thank you so much it's very kind of you to leave a comment and share. Namaste

Did this after a break as I recovered from a bout of cold. This message and teaching is perfect for me at this time - as I am feeling uncertain about which of the job offers to take and whether I should just try and build something where I am.
so pleased it helped clear your mind and hope you find the employment you love 🙏🏽
thank you the poems and your comments while doing the class are great and calming to me it has helped me greatly thank you
Glad you like them Judith! 🙏❤
So many of your YT videos that I haven't yet discovered! This one was SOOOO perfect, especially mixed in with our focus in the membership community on BOUNDARIES. When someone trespasses my boundaries, especially my energetic/emotional boundaries (like on the daily at work), that's when I feel the most insecure. I really tuned into the high lunge to knee up...insecurity, for me, is my 3rd chakra just spinning out of control - that's where I always feel it. With that vinyasa, I could feel my root and my solar plexus reconnecting to re-establish security within myself, rather than outwardly.
I love how deeply you explore these themes and teachings Hannah 💗🪽🙏
Loved this class! Such wise & lovely words about insecurity, and the need to accept this in life. When after the cat-cow poses we extended a leg & opposite arm & then brought them in, my foot that was resting on the mat cramped up when doing each side - just letting you know. It felt better when I curled each foot in. Thank you again!
awesome adjustment 🙏
"The only way to security is to accept your insecurities" Great class! Love it 🙏❤✨
Lovely to hear Ale :) :)
Thank you beautiful class !!! Blessings 🙏❤️
Loved it. Have always enjoyed Dying Warrior pose. It's a good place to give up worrying about my insecurities.
+Melissa Woodburn so true Melissa :-)
Since I discovered you and your real yoga for real people I watch your video every day (sometimes much more than one!).. It's very hard to find a teacher, on the web, who teaches the real essence of yoga.. you make so. I've fibromialgia far 15 years and thanks to yoga therapy now i feel better.. thinks than now i'm studying to become a yoga therapy teacher..
and also YOU're helping me to become a better teacher.. Thanks to your lessons, your teaching.. you can transfer emotion, the capacity of root, sink down and letting go...Thanks Melissa.
ps. sorry for my English^^
Elisabetta, thank you so much for sharing your yoga journey, from practicing with me and now teaching, I'm so pleased to hear that classes are helping you. What a perfect combination of the message and the movements. Such practical wisdom. I loved the movements - from chair to tree. The cadence of the class and the sequence was masterfully done. Had an epiphany of sorts during this class on the importance of my relationship with myself and on how may brain goes in multiple directions all at once (which is sooo tiring!) and how I can gently unentangle it and guide it back to the present moment. Thank you so much!
you're so welcome :) : )) :)
I loved this class. It felt familiar to me as my life has been plagued with insecurity. I have learned not to fight it. To accept and live well with things as they are is easier with yoga taught in this way! I loved the vinyasas and they even made me smile at how well I was able to adapt to the quick moves! Just like life.
Lovely to hear that you've got cat like reflexes and are able to adapt so quickly :)
thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and to leave such a kind comment.

Hi Melissa
Thank you very much
you're so welcome Hannah :)
Great class Melissa! Insecurity is the story of my life and even more after a MS diagnosis. So, to learn to make peace with it and to accept it, instead of fighting it with strain and frustration, could be a turning point and a great discovery. I think I'll do this class again and again... thank you!!
So pleased that you enjoyed it Amina and do hope repeating it will help you too :)

Melissa
I love how the theme and the yoga poses integrate so beautifully! After practicing yoga for 8 years, sometimes is so monotonous to keep doing the same poses again and again, but you surely give a new light to those poses, and I'm left with such a positive message in my heart! Thank you again for another amazing class!!
+M.G. Alonso you're so welcome and thank you very much for leaving such a kind comment I appreciate it very much. Namaste

In three different meaningful occasions have I experienced insecurity in life...those moments when you lose the ground. One of them was when I found you, and that was a great support to me years ago. The latest was last summer... I was sooo happy, more than ever feeling secure, certain of finally having found my way to settling down. All of the sudden a big storm came... and I fell badly... not only emotionally or metaphorically speaking, I also fell down a ladder, as if it had to happen in order to put an end to the story. Somehow I even knew it would. The whole thing was very painful, and still is, I lost the ground, it was like a nightmare. A grand wave of sorrow overtook all the previous happiness. However, just later I realized that along with that storm I was already being provided the necessary support to recover from it all. My heart is still recovering as well as my sciatica injure. But at the end, even totally insecure, I was given a whole new ground to rebuild. And for that once again I´m thankful. So what I mean is that in spite of all the insecurity that might take place in life, looks like we´ll always be able to overcome it, for we are never alone, and help will come after all.
Goodness Valéria, thank you so much for sharing your experience of this class and for the years of practicing along with me. I'm so pleased to hear that the your heart and sciatica are recovering and do hope the rest of the series resonates for you too.

Well, this could not be more appropriate for my life right now! Almost brought me to tears. What spoke to me the most is that the insecurity is "not personal." Oh my goodness, I believe that little nugget of truth is going to be instrumental in handling what is a very difficult and uncertain time I am going through right now. Think I will write this in my journal every single day to remind me ! I enjoyed the practice and my favorite part of the physical practice was going from downward dog to upward dog. The lunge to knee up was very wobbling and did a lot of falling over- but, I didn't stop, I just kept going and was even able to laugh about it. Thank you, Melissa. I do hope the bee sting is okay. ouch What a trooper you are. I guess that is just another example of insecurity. : D
Thank you so much Janice....it turns out it was only an ant bite...but not much fun :)
It's interesting that you were so moved by the teachings and I thank you for sharing :)
namaste
I was afraid it was going to be emotional insecurity..body image or shyness or on being closed off in some way. Happy to explore balance issues...mind and body ;o)
+Janet Lark so please do you like that. Namaste
Well, perfect for a pandemic in Texas, July 2020. Thank you!
Thank you Sheila :)
Hi Melissa..well Ive got to say you showed no insecurity over the bee sting you received last week...I was feeling very balanced until the movement between warrior then to chest to knee pose...I was so unbalanced on my left side it was crazy...and then all my insecurities emerged...I kept saying...Real Yoga for real people, Real Yoga for Real People over and over...like a chant. I dont know what makes me think I should be perfect in every exercise...Perfection.....so I suppose it revealed the pressure I put on my self! I stopped the tape and tried to work out why and where I was off balance...and considered for a moment if I am off balance and then there is insecurities do I allow it to mount or do I allow myself to be with it die into it ...dying warrior pose gave me that moment to let go of those insecurities and to experience what emerges as a result. For me a deeper grounding a platform of somatic knowledge to grow from strength to strength as the result of my insecurities.
Perfect class 👌
thank you :)
yes I did my shoulder stand
