In this intermediate hatha yoga class we will return to exploring the emotion of anger through yoga postures. Anger can be a very scary emotion. It can be an emotion that we do not want to relate to whether we are experiencing it or whether we are watching somebody else express it. Anger is a very direct emotion. It is an emotion that puts is in connection with our present moment experience. All of our periphery experiences fade away and we have a kind of tunnel vision that takes over, we get locked into only what is happening now. We can no longer hear or see or sense anything else. Nothing is important except for what we are angry about. In this hatha yoga class we will reflect on our own experience of anger, the times we have experienced our own expression of it and when we have felt others express it.
We will begin our hatha yoga practice in reclined bound angle pose to open to the experience of the emotion of anger. From there we will do some more challenging variations of lunge pose to put us in touch with fear, vulnerability, insecurity and our defenses. This intention will continue throughout the class as we practice poses like frog pose, variations on plank and side plank and upward facing dog. In standing we will transition between feeling solid and grounded and then not so solid and grounded from warrior one to humble warrior and goddess victory squat to humble horse. We will finish our class with half cow´s face forward fold and the abhaya mudra to reduce anxiety.
Props: blocks, bolster, folded blanket or pillow
Asanas: Reclined Bound Angle Pose or Supta Baddha Konasana, Lunge Pose or Anjaneyasana, Frog Pose or Mandukasana , Warrior One Pose or Virabhadrasana One Pose to Humble Warrior, Goddess Victory Squat or Utkata Konasana to Humble Horse, Dolphin Pose or Ardha Pincha Mayurasana, Plank Pose or Kumbhakasana, Side Plank Vasisthasana, Upward Facing Dog or Urdhva Mukha Svanasana, Ardha Gomukhasana or Half Cow´s Face Forward Fold, Savasana or Corpse Pose , Abhaya Mudra

Thank you so much…I had such a stressful day at work during a quite stressful moment in my life…I was so angry today and you’ve helped me to realize what all was coming from…these past days I have just wanted to come home and sleep, but instead , I’ve chosen to do one f your classes, and I have to say that it has been the best choice. Not only I feel better, but also happy that I am giving this love to myself by giving myself a chance to unwind and slow things down with one of your classes.❤❤❤❤ Thank you so so very much for just being such an amazing yoga teacher❤❤❤

Exactly what I needed today. Thank you for reminding me that the underlying feeling below anger is very often vulnerability or fear.

Glad you agreed to teach us this class, i've been through a situation today and anger became all i could focus on really, i just wouldn't let go...And this is it, i was experiencing fear, like no one was paying attention to what was going on with me and i would have liked to have someone telling me it's gonna be okay...I did panic and allowed this anger to build roots in me...So thank you for this class, for helping me recognized my own truth...It's such a privilege to be one of your student...Also thanks to Tim for convincing you as well... :) Big hug from my home to yours!!!

I needed this class today, thank you for putting it out for us, fighting through your own resistance! I am smiling at the end! I enjoyed the humble warrior poses after the strengthening warrior poses, it felt right, to demonstrate strength and remind the self to remain humble. Also, I learned something regarding posture for plank, with the elbow folds, not sure how I have always missed that! thank you again.

+Brenda Beach I'm so pleased that today's class was so helpful for you. I enjoy doing humble Warrior too. I'm also very pleased to hear that I was able to help a little bit with your posture for plank pose. Thank you so much for sharing your comment and of course for watching the videos. Namaste

Thankyou Melissa. A great class as always. Challenging! The teachings were also interesting. So true, but I also find that showing or expressing anger itself can be more vulnerable than other emotions or states...Such an unacceptable emotion in my family or origin!

Thank you for great yoga class! I think anger is also very important feeling because it helps us to recognize if someone has violated our boundaries and helps to keep those boundaries firmly when needed :)
I really enjoyed the final mudra and could feel quick emotional shift by doing it! :)

I did share it and I am grateful to you for doing this one. Anger is my main issue right now. Even as I am writing this the people down stairs are making all kind of distressing noises and inwardly I react to the aggression with aggression and I don't know how to change that. Weather I express it or not I do feel this very painful emotion. I don't know if this practice will help me, but I will give it a try. I hope that one day It will come to me, the inner understanding and the capacity to to transform it.

Thank You Melissa, for this series generally. Today I found it really hard for some reason to join this anger class. Resistance was big. I found issues to work with. Will repeat it for sure and it will be interesting to see, if connection to anger grows and resistance lessens down. :)

You were reluctant to teach it; i was reluctant to do it. That’s the best thing i could do. I experimented aversion while in the poses. I experimented that i tend to not recognize anger, suppress it before it is conscious, deny it. Fact is i have anger. Everyday. I read the news or just see, the injustice, the unfairness, the people crushed, economy trumps environment, all those awful things, the ministers that are the face of deforestation, lost of wild animals habitat, the woods and fields more and more silent with animals, birds and insects vanishing. and i get angry , indignant, i think now it isbetter to be angry in a way. Otherwise it is sadness. Yes fear is underneath both. If i was only in sadness, i would disintegrate and drown in depression. Anger is more alive, as long as i don’t stay in it as it does not destroy me . But now , while in the class, i recognized that many times a day, i am angry. It flares . Also, interestingly, while doing the vulnerable poses, the tought came up that those vulnerable poses were making me steonger . Thank you lots for this class! It would be a shame not having it

Thank you for your honesty and vulnerability in being authentic about the ways that anger comes up in response to the injustices of our world.
