I be called if I missed it in your video but could you tell me around about how long this AC will run on one fill up of gas
GREAT VIDEO INFORMATION!!! LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. I WATCHED A VIDEO, WERE THEY MOUNTED A SMALL PORTABLE GENERATOR IN A HUSKY TOTE BOX, BOLTED VENTED METAL, PAINTED, ON TWO SIDES, MOUNTED A 9" FAN INSIDE TO PULL AIR, TEMP. GAS TANK ON OUTSIDE. ALMOST SILENT, AMAZINGLY! HIS WAS ALL BLACK, I WOULD GO CAMO, SO NOT EASILY SEEN.
Best bet and bang for the buck is the Honda 2200i.
But I did not ever have an issue with the sportsman I had. Its actually still running great, gave it to a friend when I got the bigger generator.
*Works great **Fastly.Cool** compact and Easy to install*
BRO i love your vids, i love your cat & who is shreading guitars at the end of every vidd?
Hey professor hobo, you should do a review on the new Honda 3200i generator. If you do a poll I bet you’ll get some interest. Thanks
Great work! Thanks for the series.
Does it have an electric cooling fan? How do these air cooled generators cool down?
What are you using in front of the generator to shield some of the sound?
Very helpful video HOBOTECH. Thank you!
Thanks for making vanlife super easy honestly.
Nice information, thanks for the update!
Happy Easter&Be Blessed!🙏🐾🙏
fine job keep it coming
BEAUTIFUL spot you have there, another good video Tom!
Love this setup. Would like to see a video of your daily activities that keep you busy and intertain.
If the 5200 btu air conditioner is only 450 to 500 watts wouldn't that only be half a load on a 1000 watts gas generator instead of 70 percent load ? I think 🤔 it would be hard on a small generator if the temperature 🌡 reached more than 90 degrees 🤔 may wanna look for a bigger generator ?
Thanks for sharing your video, I have enjoyed it very much...
Thanks for the informative video. Always looking for ways to stay cool and to help with cleaning the air inside due to allergies. Got to keep kitty cool also.
The older Yamaha 4 stroke golf cars had dipsticks stamped wrong too, if you put more than a quart or topped it off to the mark, it would saturate the air filter with oil and stop running.
Probably because the Yam and others are built by ONE company that builds them for/with MANY brand names
I had a Yamaha 250 cc scooter blow a shaft seal because of overfilling , Wrong oil measurements.
Both turned out to be great purchases.
I ordered mine. Got it put oil in ran it to brake it in. Changed the oil. Put it away for 2 months then I ran it and it broke. I took it back to home depo and no returns or exchanges. So I paid about 200 with taxes. And I did not really ever use it. Yup I got ripped of 200 down the drain.
Glad to see the sportsman is hanging in there I just bought one of these and the oil level is 7.5.I think it's great you kept track of the hours on the generator. Also absolutely keep those clothes on one other thing if you keep threting Odin with pickle he may leave a gift on your pillow !! Nice video
GGGrreat video. Going to get one.
Depending on when and where you buy it, prices have gone up. 150-250.
Currently, 169 at walllyworld.
Sadly, the Westinghouse is made in also made shyna.
TY Sub & thumbs up.
Going to watch the "blew up" video now.
Peace
750 hours ....... Wow !! Yes mine smokes too at times... Thanx for the oil tip
7 000 hours on my champion 1200 watt. add a cap or half cap of seafoam to your crank case when you change your oil your plugs will last 10X longer
Is that 4 stroke or 2 stroke generator?
A shade canvas/tarp on poles covering the van may be a big help. Try it out in a comparison test.
I'd like to try that but I don't have the room to carry poles.
@@HOBOTECH UNDER or on side of the van, just need some ingenious brackets
As always very good information and detailed explanation 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 👍👍👍👍 👍
Those are the videos I like
AGREED !!! We enjoy these informational vids the most ...
I got a Firman generator 3650 watts and 4550 starting watts. It weighs 119 pounds, which is heavy but you can order it with a wheel kit, extra carb jets for different altitudes up to 8000 feet which will make it run much smoother. Firman sent me the additional jets for free. It will obviously handle a ton of extra draw, especially a homestead situation and that's why I bought it. It cost $350 at Amazon and the wheel kit about $32. Oh and it has a 5 gallon capacity, hence it will run for about 12 hours and has a bottle opener built in, lol. Doesn't take much to amuse beer drinkers ;)
Another great informative video Tom👍🏻Easter 🐣 Sunday can’t wait to eat all that delicious food😊👋
why is it seemingly impossible for someone to modify or make a smaller AC for vanners?!
Happy Easter to you and Odin from Captain Jack Scrapper!! :-)
Your stuff continues to amaze me. It was a lot of fun to camp with you. Next time I hope we can do that interview. Happy travels!
Your cat looks just like my son's cat. Pretty & I'm sure he's loving the AC!😻
I bought one of these generators just for running my a/c after watching your review of it, still got it for $149 a few weeks ago. Thanks for the info.
You remind me, I found it saved me money to run my window a/c at home on portable generator than buying from Georgia Power.
85 degrees and 10 percent humidity is "heavenly summertime weather" in the swampy state of Georgia.
$1.50 Those days are long gone!
Another great video! We run a Harbor Frieght Predator 3500 for our big fifth wheel but we had to pay $650 on sale for it. You set up is much more reasonable!
All the sportsman 1000 watts are $225 plus. Where can I find one under $200?
I like your hands on videos videos that show something in action working doing something or much better you can see what u can run in real time is more truthful
My Haier (now 2 yrs old) is 6000 btu with soft start and digital, put on cool low and low or medium fan at 90 degrees and it pulls only 88 watts.
Also runs well in Eco mode (50%) on my 400 watt generator.

awesome review! ANyone tried this with the similar propane model? Wonder if it will be able to power that ac unit also.
I'm all thumbs up here. Great ideas for homeless folks to live in comfort.
I wonder if an oil filter could add life to generators like this. Maybe a little 12v oil scavenge gear pump and inline power steering filter (also used on some automatic transmissions). A salvaged cordless drill speed control could slow the pump down.
It could tap the unused 12v output (I knew there just had to be some good use for it). Worst case might be an oil leak causing loss of oil, but the built in shutdown would prevent engine damage leaving only the cleanup.
Happy Easter
86.... less than 10% humidity.... perfect day out. I need to move there.
You want to hear cheap?! Sportsman makes a dual fuel 2200 watt (surge, 1800 watt constant) that can run on propane. And it can run for 18 hours at 50% load on one standard tank of propane, 7 hours on gas. Of couse, your wattage capability on propane is going to be 10% less, so you lose a bit, but it's sooooo cheap to run. Has a sine wave inverter too. I see from the suggested videos now, that you own a sine wave inverter generator, but now they have dual fuel. And get this, some brands like Firman, make a tri fuel that can run on natural gas too.
I used that Reflectix stuff on my home garage doors. it worked so well, that after almost 20 years of living here, it helped me discover that my HVAC was leaking cold air into it... and why my tools would rust badly within a year or two. This stuff insulated the doors so well, that the AC leak actually cooled my garage and was able to hold a temperature (until you opened those doors) So i opted to keep this going and just run a dehumidifier to prevent condensation and rust. But this is night and day type stuff
Mine does not smoke. . I was out for 2 weeks in March / April. never used it. Enough Sun and vehicle charge to cover all electrical needs. Also had hookups at some of the places I camped (free)
Odin 🐈 says thank you for the AC! 👍😀
Very informative video. Harbor freight has the small generators on sale today for $106.00, I cant find it now but I saw another add this weekend for $89.00 from I think Northern. Thumbs up !
Those are 2 cycle engines (need oil mixed with the gas)
Standing on an ant hill? OMG, it's Hobozilla!!
No, here for the gen test and we don't wanna see nakedness, you got it right.
COOL!
I just tried my Frigidaire A/C unit like yours with my Sportsman 1000 Inverter generator for the 1st. time and it is pulling 420 watts...but works great !
Update...Aug 15th 2020 the next day my Frigidaire A/C unit is now using 530 watts and my Sportsman Generator won't do it on the Economy mode ! But, today was our 1st 100 degree day here in Oregon and the A/C unit wasn't blowing really cool air either ! Still the best option out there !
I bought one last week. In the manual it says 7.5. In the phamplet, it says the same, and then in bold lettering it says to fill until almost overflowing. Wtf? Which is it? And what's the point of the dip stick then? Lol.
I like my Yamaha generator. I've had it for 3 years. All I do is change the oil and put gas in it...its fairly quiet and the gas on/off switch makes clearing the carb of gas possible, so the carb doesnt foul.
GREAT video, Tom !!! Nice to see you back, doing more informational type videos, (than just the "partying type" one's .... ) Just my own opinion, sir .... but i think it is better for your viewers/subscriber #s
Keep them coming, and KEEP COO:L out there .. :) :)
Different strokes for different folks. I do too many vlogs people complain. I do too many tech videos people complain. Thanks for the input!
Bought mine last year from Wal-Mart for $149.00 so far it works fantastic, and it's lighter than my 1200 watt .... Great vid. BigBadBubbaBurns
I would like a bigger 2000W generator to power a few more things with AC on low in van
Can’t you build a swamp cooler? And film it? And make a UA-cam film about swamp coolers?
I considered making out of a 5 gallon bucket to test and making a video about it.
Ugh they want 260 for the sportsman now.
HT, Good Video. Don't know if this makes sense for your situation? I saw a video that said start cooling your Rig or your Home before it gets Hot because the AC will need to cool everything in the Rig or Home that got Hot (furniture,Pillows Ect.) then the Air.
Yes, it's a product of heat capacity. It takes a lot more energy to remove stored heat from a vehicle than it is to keep it cool in the first place. If I know it's going to be really hot I'll start the a/c earlier.
Just bought a used one for $60
Have you looked at easy start capacitor add-on? Lot easier on generator during startup.
Bought one on Sams Club a couple days ago for $149
I've got an Onan 3.0 3000 Generator in my 1987 Toyota Motorhome it only had 23 hours on the Generator when I bought the camper 4 years ago. I run it occasionally just to exercise it as I haven't done much traveling with it yet. Here's the funny quirk...The Gen has a Low oil Shut off Feature that is faulty. I discovered that I had to Remove about a Pint of oil to get the Genny to run continually as it should !
Think the sportsman is made by BUFFALO TOOLS company. Bought a cheap one like you and never used it. So gave it to my son. Will need to pass on the tip about using only 7.5 ounces oil. Good on marvel mystery additive. The bowl can get clogged with old gasoline turning to varnish, so make sure you clean out jets wity an additive.
Awesome Tom, was wondering how the little Sportsman would hold up on the AC! Gives me great hope as we HAVE to have AC for medical reasons.
The a/c I use has a soft start built in. I bought it specifically for that reason.
@@HOBOTECH Is that something that is built into most new ones or you have to specifically look for it?
You have to look for it. This Frigidaire unit is often used for campers that run on generators so it has it built in.
@@HOBOTECH Ok good to know thanks.
I got 13.5 hours on mine running 150 watts on eco. I was using it to catch up an inductive hour meter for my eu2200, so I was running 2 meters.
Also, if you fill the oil too high, it will or could, kinda hydro-lock with oil in the cylinder. At least it did on mine. Keep the oil low and it will run great.
I didn't know I was overfilling it. I was going by the dipstick which you would think would be correct. Leave it up to the Chinese to even screw that up.
Would have liked to see the temp change after running ac for a period. Always wondered good a 5000btu would cool a van. Thanks for adding the killawatt info, was curious about that as well. Thumbs up.
I showed that in a few videos and on Instagram. Usually good for 25 degree drop from ambient.
HOBOTECH thanks, I just started following you. I’m sure I’ll catch up. Your ac runs at less than 450 watts, that is not an insurmountable task to power totally by solar! Wouldn’t that be sweet!
Not in a van. There is also a 20% overhead for the inverter. So 800-1000w minimum and this assumes no clouds which doesn't happen much July in AZ.
do you like the screen tarps over the van to cool it off? ...wind wont knock it off
Will it work to power a little electric heater? Thanks for the videos
Probably not...most of those draw 1500 watts
I bought that generator under the Dirty Hands brand about 3 years ago, almost double the price. Never smoked. Changed the oil yesterday. I'd gripe about that price but it has been solid and it really will charge a battery bank when solar is not working. I've looked at the Westinghouse.
In low humidity I like evaporative coolers. I've had a Swampy for 10 years and they have a hose so it brings in fresh air. Most people don't realize tht running them inside just raises the humidity, without a fresh air source. The RV coolers had a following when I started, 80's, and these were roof mount. You need some water. They basically cool you if you are in the air stream.
With a van build you could get around R12 with the best foam. Then you could try a split heat pump. Depends on how the technology develops. Solar is cheap. Lithium is getting cheaper, especially if you import from China. The heat pumps are super efficient, even for heating.
The grim world of American Corporations we grew up with:
www.consumerreports.org/lcd-led-oled-tvs/tv-brands-arent-always-what-they-seem/
Mike, I suggest something with a power selector. The Sportsman has a hard time running anything over 600 watts and you have to factor in a 20% loss in most battery chargers. I have a Progressive Dynamics 55 amp and if my batteries are below 80% charged I have to manually kick it down into a lower voltage charge for the generator to be able to start the charge cycle.
@mike brink When I had two flooded deep cycles in a trailer I was using a 20 amp MFJ power supply (ham radio). It's adjustable so you can start with a low voltage and build up to whatever amps the generator will handle. You can manual charge Lifepo lithium with this setup. I have a 20 amp charger made for RC Lipo stuff that is programmable for Lifepo4, just hook these up to a power supply. The RC charger I have has a 20 amp AC power supply. I have a Lifepo bank with 4 used 180 AH cells, and they are a pretty close match to lead. Much better tech than lead.

Home depot for 500 with 3 year warranty extra, not bad for fake honda.
hot weather you need that AC. Move further north for the cooler weather is.a choice. Have a good day. ☕️🍩
Where do you work?
@Hobotech, First I love your videos. But how much solar would you need to run that 5k AC, as in, maintain the same charge on batteries. Thus run the AC during heat of day? I am thinking about getting a Jackery just for this reason and solar panels, like the Jackery 1000.
I wonder if this would run the haier with the automatic thermostat.
I picked this up because we heat our house with a pellet stove and wanted the peace of mind that if we do have a power outage, we can stay warm.
I read that many were changing oil multiple times in the first hour of running. I did that (one oil change every 20 minutes of run time for a total of three).
Outside of that is there anything I should do? Minimum amount of time I should run? Run the gas tank dry on storage? I know you want to run the carb dry which only takes seconds.
Just want this thing to fire up when we need it to in the winter. It will likely see little to no use in the summer beyond what would be recommended for maintenance.
What kind of A.C. do you have?
hobotech.tv/amazon
Mine lasted about 24 hours of light use spread apart in hour sessions over 2 years. It actually smoked a cyberpower surge protector and then any load over 200 watts would trip the overload. Its too bad because my engine ran great and was well taken care of. However, a replacement inverter was $150 and the whole unit can be had for $200 so it didn't make sense to repair it. So I am going to try a WEN 1250 next. My main use for the small generators is to run my electric hedge clippers as I go around the property. The sportsman 1000 did that well until it died after a storm knocked out our power and I was using the little generator to run our internet equipment.
G'day Mate, Great video covering the 1000 Watt generator & for the price who could complain ?
I am obviously in The Land Down Under & may have a Tip for you on your Generator, I am also subscribed to a channel called ElderlyIron who is in
Oregon, & in his last video he had opened up his Colt's fuel tank to repair a rusty leak. ( He is a older mechanic & old school, + very good IMO)
Anyway, when opened the tank it had a very sludgy build up in the bottom & apparently to him it had a very strong smell he attributed to
the use of that Mystery Oil, I don't know the stuff we don't have it hear as far as I know but if he is right it may prolong your generator's life.
Take It Easy Mate, Steve.
When it got over 80's here in Fla. I'd take my overweight cats to the beauty shop and have them shaved down, they appreciated it
im wondering if you experimented with noise reduction plywood around the generator angled away from it so the ground absorbs the noise?
wow 85 degrees and 10% humidity, and need AC, must be from Canada
86 temp @ 10 percent humidity is about 80 degrees REAL FEEL, aka HEAT INDEX.
When in Florida (thirty years ago) I got used to 80 degrees @ 80 percent humidity rather than huge electric bill. 86 Heat Index. Heat tolerance generally decreases with age and waning physical stamina. Current preference is 72 to 75 heat index.
Metal Jezus rock on brother god bless you !!
I started with that generator but it couldn't start my 6kbtu unit. I returned it and ponied up for a Honda 2200. I decided i shouldn't cheap out when my dogs life is in the balance.
My 2200 runs a 5K BTU AC for about 3hrs on 1 gallon in econ mode. Expected it go 4 to 5 hrs. Recently installed Hutch Mountain Propane conversion kit.
@@DesignerAviaries that doesn't sound right. I can run my ac on full blast for 6 hours. My unit won't even start up when the gen is in eco mode. You should put a kill a watt on there and see how much energy your ac uses when running. I'm running a 6kbtu window unit which draws 500 watts at full blast. To only get 3 hrs either your gen is having a problem or your ac is really inefficient
I have no experience with propane though
@@bren42069 Just found watt meter to measure 5K AC draw. New Honda never varied from 2,800 RPM in econ mode. Maybe I got use gasoline estimate wrong since never let it run dry. Have only used it for 10 hours.
RPM/HOUR meter and magnetic dipstick are common options. Runleader HM026A (meter) is OK but would prefer a design with replaceable battery. The two times I have checked the dipstick there has been graphite like residue on the tip. Metal particles presumably.
COPY/PASTE from my Amazon Review.............
Measuring the temperature of the exhaust under various loads (steady 2,800 RPM economy mode) revealed the Honda is like a medical instrument;
>131 degrees running 5K BTU AC, small fan and 60 watt light bulb.
>129 when the fan and light bulb were turned off.
>127 when the AC was switched from HIGH cool setting to LOW cool.
> 98 degree exhaust idling with no load.
Propane conversion may come in handy. Honda was installed in rear utility room of box truck with bulkhead access panel for controls and recoil start. Bulkhead mounted AC and Honda exhaust are vented through floor.
Variable speed, 200 CFM fan ideally suited for stealth ventilation.
29 watts and 28 decibels at maximum speed.
AC Infinity CLOUDLINE S4 Quiet 4” Inline Duct Fan with Speed Controller.
Check out their product line to keep pets comfortable.
It's a good idea to break in your generator and Chang the oil a couple times after an hour or two of running to remove those bits of metal so they don't screw up the engine
Ac power is actually rated in volt amps... you will see it is significantly higher than the watts you're seeing.... important when sizing your system. This is why many folks are saying these do not supply 800w... it's not rated for that... ignore the confusion and trust the meter.
I like
For some reason when I turn on the AC to low cool my watts jump up to 760 watts tripping on the overload and killing the generator. I was only able to successfully get it to run two times where it'll only jump to 460watts. Not sure what's going on.
You never said how cool it got in your van??
It drops the temps about 20 degrees from outside.
I wood like to know how you make ice and keep it frozen?
I use an ice machine to make it in bulk then store it in either fridge.
If I don't want to carry gas in a van or have anything hanging off the hitch receiver, do you think it would be too much trouble to just use a siphon pump to get gas out of the van's tank?
I have a siphon setup on my Onan that lets me pull gas from the van's tank (covered in a prior video). However, I have to run the Onan for the fuel pump to work. Currently the Onan needs a $200 part to run. I find it easier to carry a 2.5 gallon can. Let's me run to a gas station to refill and I keep more accurate readings of fuel consumption.
The generator sounds louder now than when it was new.
It definitely is but it sounds louder on camera when I'm up close.
LOL, Found you again scoping out these Sportman Generators. Yep, Not seen any bad reviews yet. Defiantly on my list.
This generator will only power the AC for 30min before it goes into overload mode and shut down. I have the same setup.
It powered my Frigidaire model for hundreds of hours.
@@HOBOTECH Thanks for the reply. I'm bummed then. I had 2 of the generators do the same. My Frigidaire is exactly the same model too.
It does depend on fuel blend, altitude, and oil viscosity. I noticed above 5000 ft it has a hard time with the a/c and I had to run it on standard mode. Ethanol free gas definitely works better too. I also ran 5w30 full synthetic and that let it make a bit more power. The biggest issue I had was it overheating and vapor locking. That would typically happen in the first 20-30 mins.
@@HOBOTECH I think the issue I have is it will overheat and trip the overload. But I use 91 Octane cause it just runs and starts better. Being in California I can't control the ethanol blend. But I will substitute the oil with full synthetic. Maybe remove the side panels if it's a overheating issue. I appreciate your response. I love the size of this generator. Would prefer to have it than a larger one. Now if I can get my AC to run on it for 5-6 hours that would be fantastic.
I was able to run the generator for about an hour with eco mode OFF before I ended my test. So far that is the longest and good results. The AC compressor must never shut off or else if it kicks back on the generator becomes overloaded. A soft start capacitor will probably fix that issue. My AC is built into my teardrop trailer and that isn't an option for me.
do you charge batts with van alternator while you drive?
🤔 I was wondering about water also?
These new a/c units evaporate the water out of the back.
