I left the rat race to live full time on the road and so can you! The key to freedom is to lower your expenses. In my former life, I managed a company that struggled to stay out of the red. This is where I learned to hone my frugality skills and use them to my own advantage by becoming a minimalist at home. The biggest expense we all have living in a sticks and bricks is our rent or mortgage. We work most of our adult lives to make a bank or landlord / landlady rich! With ever increasing real estate prices and stagnant wages the cost of living has skyrocketed. Many can barely make ends meet and live paycheck to paycheck. You can stop the madness by thinking outside the box and joining this growing movement of full-timers that enjoy van-dwelling or RV living. If you dream about a life of travel you can do it incredibly cheap just by downsizing your lifestyle into a RV or van "tiny house" and becoming mobile.
In this series, I go from a home in the Los Angeles hills packed full of stuff and owning two cars to full-timing in a Roadtrek campervan in less than 6 months. I buy an old camper van on Craigslist and deck it out just like home with all kinds of technology to make life comfortable on the road. I hope to encourage those that think they "can't do it" by showing how it CAN be done by planning carefully and taking baby steps.

May i have your option on the inergy flex 1500 solar generator?
*Great product **Fastly.Cool** so far*
Success!!! It was worth the two day wait to see if it worked or not. I am very impressed with that little generator. Another great video and the Piano music at the end fit the production perfectly.
This particular show is one of my favorite!...as it applies to me directly...last summer I went without ac the whole summer...yes it proved I could do it,but it wasn't fun.... thanks man! 😊
Omg!!!!! Thank u so much for helping me survive a 4 day power outage. I have a larger fancier gen but it failed on day 2. I was down to my little sportsman. It powdered my 5000 ac without hestation. Don’t think I would have even tried if I hadn’t already watched this.
First time I have ever seen one of your videos.... By far probably my favorite intro. Wait the cat talking into the mic at the end was priceless too!
Great job so much more efficient! Looks better also, happy travels! Thank you!
What a relief I'm sure.
Awesome job! So talented.
👍
Gotta love that little generator! Good video!
Great work video thanks for filming!
Thank you for making these videos. I want to travel in a van, but have a breathing issue, so need to really learn about something to keep my bipap going and a/c, when needed. I appreciate your videos AND the fun way you make them! :)
Congrats on the install!
THANKS FOR SHOWING THE GENERATOR.
Great vid. Good ole American ingenuity. Salute!
I've seen other videos running this AC on a Goal Zero. Would love to see that test with the multitude of solar generators you have tested. I am looking for a setup to keep my dogs cool for a few hours in the van so I can travel with them and keep them safe. Thanks for all the videos you do. Always useful real world applications. 🐕🐕
Thanks for this video -- very helpful!
Tom you are so helpful!
nice ZZ Top style song during the installation \m/ great video thanks
nice job tom keep them coming
Nice job!! Very ingenious and well planned! It's amazing how this AC will work with such a small gen set and an inexpensive one too. All this time I was thinking the smallest ones would still need at least a 2000W Honda gen. I have watched lots of your videos and wonder why haven't more people haven't subscribed. Your information is very helpful.
Have a good one!
-Jon
I ask myself that same question every single day. Thanks for watching!
Going to get that generator that's perfect. I will use your link
Thanks!
Good to know. Thanks
Good Video. Caught you on another channel maybe cheap RV on some solar setup running air conditioning. New subscriber here. Thanks for all the effort for showing your work and explaining stuff. Keep up the good work!
here for the run time info, thanks!
Great video Tom!
I love your videos thank you for this
The sweet smell of success! 👍✌
awesome info!
Excellent video
Great video. I love those ac units. Just give me the knobs !!!
I personally hate pushing digital buttons and also prefer real knobs and switches. I'm in a van, I certainly don't need a remote!
Good job!!
Yet another great vid!!!
That's why I run an onan commercial generator 7000 because it is never too much energy. But that's my plan to install a window ac unit in my camper.
I was also thinking of running my whole camper with the ac with a 3000 watt inverter on my batteries, and run a small generator to a battery charger.
Cool, have a 6x12 cargo trailer. My 2000w Ryobi will run that no problemo!
Ty!
Great video
This is encouraging. I just can't decide whether to install a/c or not!
Do it....You will wish you had.
just an FYI, the only difference between a "low cool" setting and "high cool" setting is fan speed. The compressor does not change speed only the fan. The difference on a amp scale between low fan and high fan are something like .5amps or less I would think.
good vid for sure.. and a sure fire system. I saw similar video on cheapRV living and they used the energy star version of this model which has a SEER of 12.2 vs this model SEER of 11.1.. While it does have remote control it cost $50 more.. I am like you simple is better. again hats off to ya..
Limitless did as Odin said, thanks for the video!
Just a tidbit of info if you are unaware. Leveling of the A/C unit is crucial to it's performance. The A/C has what's called a splatter fan in the back of the unit. It is this fans job to "splatter" the coils with the condensed water in the back of the unit. This drops the temp of the coils down about 15 degrees which in turn will make your air blow about that much cooler. If your A/C is tilted too far out all that water will drain out and the unit will run very warm because there is no water for the fan to use. Unit should be level to a slight outward tilt but not so much that all the water drains out. When done properly you will hear the water "splatter" when the unit turns on. Of course this will be crucial to watch in an RV because of ever changing parking. Great videos just subscribed to your channel as well.
Good info, and welcome aboard. The air coming out at the vent was measured 44-46 degrees with a laser thermometer so I think i got the leveling right. I also have a 2nd fan installed at the back of the a/c that helps suck the heat out through the grille in back.
Nice!
Oh man!!!! I have been pining for the solution you gave us here! This summer we moved from California to South Carolina. I have my travel trailer but I also have a truck camper that does not have air conditioning. My propane refrigerator is starting to fail and I was wondering if I could pull that refrigerator out of that spot if I could put an air conditioner in. One of my questions was about the generators ability to run the AC all night long. I was looking at propane generators but then ran a crossed auxiliary tanks that can feed the smaller generator. I would really be curious to know if your generator can run the AC in a hot environment all night long as you sleep. Thanks for putting this out there and at the perfect time too! It’s hot and humid in South Carolina!
Depends of circuit brake peak.
Love my Little Sportsman. Purchased one about 8 months ago for $169.00 @ H Depot online. Thing comes in so handy around my cabin I just bought a second one from H Depot online
$149.00. Just had too for that price. Thanks Again for the Video.
Great job finding this gen on sale. Price has gone up.
Another great video, I'm always learning stuff when I watch your videos. Thanks. Was wondering if you will now remove the big heavy Onon 2800 watt generator. You could lighten up some and reclaim some space? 👍🙄🇨🇦
Did you watch the video? 😆 Of course I am keeping the Onan. I still need it to run other appliances. It also has an altitude adjustment so I can use it at much higher altitudes than the Sportsman which has a fixed setting.
The small 2 cycle model from Harbor Freight will start and run a 6000 btu. Used one for years at deer camp. I think it was 700 running watts. They still sell them.
Congratulations, i was totally wrong. Good luck with the new set up. 😉😀cheers
Larry Outdoors read the specs ...
Love all the videos. Curious, how long do you think this would run off your battery bank and solar panels if you wanted to? Do you think it even could?
I have that same Soortsman generator and a 5000 BTU AC like that. All I do is fire up the generator and plug it in to my 30 amp service receptical on my 16ft trailer and turn on the AC.. no problems. My main concern is A C for sleeping.
Good Video
Dude awesome
Woooooeeeeeee howdy peepholes! Really been enjoying the frequent uploads buddy!
Where do you have the generator outside of the van? It was so quiet once you were in the van.
New subscriber, thanks for the info!
the compressor has cycle through its run from hi pressure to normal; if you read the ac instructions it will show to WAIT a certain number of minutes if you turn off the unit while the compressor is running until turning the unit back on & into the cooling cycle
i finely got one sportsman.had to go through sams club.home depot does not deliver city restrictions.
Id like to see if a jackery explorer 500 can run an air conditioner!
Love It! will it run an inverter A/C without damaging it?
My Ryobi 2300 should be able to power a 6000 btu version of this. I just have to figure out where to put it.
Cool Video! :)
the Chevrolets have a plastic fuel pump housing that you can drill a hole in and stuff a 1/4 inch hose down there to suck fuel from the vans gas tank , you run the long 1/4 inch hose back to the rear bumper and put a quick disconnect on the end , then plug your generators fuel line into the quick disconnect.
May have to add a inline fuel pump if the Sportsman doesn't have one.
Great information! Thanks!
So where is the generator while you're running the A/C, sitting outside on a table?
I put it on a rubber mat and cable lock it to something.
Thanks, Tom, for another excellent video with easy to follow explanations. It's so great you can run the AC economically on the small genny. I didn't see a drain hose for the AC, how does it get rid of the accumulated water it pulls out of the air?
Apparently, modern a/c units evaporate collected humidity out of the hot side. I can say this is true because when I first turn it on it smells like a swamp.
HOBOTECH, so there's no water leakage and/or you don't have to make sure the unit is tilted down for drainage?
I have mine installed on a very slight tilt but there is no water leakage. My guess is that the water pools in a pan and then is evaporated by the main fan.
HOBOTECH. Thanks, Tom!
@@HOBOTECH Does you AC unit have to be vented outside from the rear?
I literally just made a video using that generator and a small window unit in my home made camper lol. Looks like i didn't discover anything new. Dang lol.
8:05 Look at all the louvers on top of A/C unit REAR portion. Is it necessary that these remain UNCOVERED for proper cooling?
HoboTech, what about using one of those ac units as a tent ac when traveling? Get to your spot, set the ac unit on a table, put some type of duct or "sock" on the front of it to the tent and turn it on. Aside from tent walls having no insulation, could a person do that or maybe do the same to a van interior as a temporary cooling fix? I am trying to figure out what to do without installing one and using it as a tabletop with the unit outside.
Thank you for your videos. Actually, I came across your video on solar panel insulation on a fiberglass roof. This was greatly helpful to me as I am in the process of buying a modified horse trailer with a fiberglass roof. However, having a roof air conditioner takes up tons of space...causing shadowing and limiting the number of roof panels. So it is nice to know there is a solution for a window air conditioner that can actually run on solar...and 1 or 2 more roof panels ( instead of roof air conditioner ) might make the difference. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE it if you would post your installation video...or if you ( or one of the experienced people reading this ) would post some links about the best ways to do this: are there better windows to have the manufacturer of the trailer to install..with the intention of installing an air conditioner? Are there safety issues or regulation issues with a window air conditioner on the road? Are there brackets made for RV windows to support air conditioners ? When I brought up the idea of no roof air conditioner, and a window air conditioner instead...to the builder, he had not heard of this being done on a very thin RV wall ( as opposed to a 4+ inch wall of a house ) . Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.
My uninstall/install video won't help you because it is Roadtrek specific and they already had it figured out at the factory. I've seen people in vans pop out a back window and install an a/c there. I doubt there are any specific brackets or kits for a/c install. RV's are custom made so they usually fabricate mounts at the factory. You'll likely have to do the same.
Another great video!
We bought a Pulsar 2000 watt inverter generator for $325 and it handles the same ac unit with absolute ease...including an induction stove and numerous other gadgets all at the same time!!!!
You made the right choice. The 2,000 watt uses about the same amount of fuel as the 1,000 for a given load and it can run an AC that size with ease while in eco mode. I have a Honda eu2000i it will run up to a 12,000 btu in eco mode. Though a 12,000 will occasionally trip the over load while trying to start in eco mode.
Match the fly pattern to the hatch same as matching the wattage load to the generator putput
@@THX..1138 Have you had the over load light over the time you have had the Honda 2000 to come on alot? Reason I ask I had a cheap Chinese 80cc inverter generator and I burned it up using it for 6 months pretty heavy off-grid. The generator board seemed to burn up the motor would run the generator but wouldn't make any electrical power the overload light would come on and no power output on the generator. Luckily they traded it in for a brand new one but I was a little concerned about burning up another one. I would rather have had my money back. Since then I have bought a Honda 2200 inverter generator dual fuel and I only run on propane. I could always parallel the two together using the dead man's cord I made.
@@tomtee4442 Overload light on EU2000 I think only comes on after the gen goes into safe mode. Then it will be running, but not making power until you restart it....Yes I've tripped the overload many times and it never did any harm.
Thanks I’m get a 2200 Honda or Yamaha.
can a jakery or blue eddie work too
It looks like that air conditioner is no longer made. Any suggestions on a current model that would fit the bill?
What elevation are for this video?
I've done some reading on this model and I don't see where it has a soft start. Maybe you are thinking hard start capacitor?
amp draw is alot more if outside coil isnt super free flowing...didnt see how its vented outside.
all looks great just one problem how will u get the filter out to clean it theres no room!!!! to slide it out the side!!! opps???
I'm going to have to remove the right side mount and foam insulation but I think I can probably just get the filter out for cleaning. It's thin and flexible so it should be able to bend.
Naturally and of course, UA-cam inserted an Ad just as you turned the thermostat down the first time, lol.
UA-cam ... always a practical joker.
I purchased my Sportsman 1000 from Amazon for $197 delivered. Six monthly payments of $33. It's amazing how much it will run. You are correct, the digital AC units will not run on it. They will turn on and the fan blows but the compressor wont turn on. Most likely due to the square sine wave of the generator. I've thought about trying to use a large capacitor to smooth it out some to see if that will work.
The generator puts out a sine wave, not square.
Inverter generators don't.
You're wrong. Do some research. Nearly all inverter generators output a sine wave. Frequency control is one of the things they do best by design.
The AC ( Frigidare FFRA0511R1E) is no longer available. Do you have another recommendation or any information that might help me find a good substitute? So far reading the info on 'similar' AC units I cannot find a description that includes 'soft start'. Thank you. Your videos are very helpful.
Try to get a non-digital air conditioner make sure about the return policy and try it, if it doesn't work you can take it back. No small air conditioners that I know of have microair easy start in them. and when I talked to micro air easystart deciding what I'm going to do. you can only install micro air easy starts in the big rooftop RV air conditioners 13,500 and 15,000 AC's.
Thanks for sharing. I'll be replacing my AC soon in my RT. Doesn't work well when its a 100 degrees out..Please tell me its not difficult to replace? lol Cool the generator runs the AC unit.
It's easy. Only takes a couple of hours. You'll have to drill a new hole like I did to fit the GFI. Roadtrek didn't do the best job insulating these vans (for example, the galley area has no insulation) so you'll still want to use tarps when it's really hot and of course Reflectix on the windows.
Right on...Thanks. What i want to hear..Some Trekers take the back grill off..Yikes..
I installed a $10 Walmart fan behind the grille and turn it on with the a/c. Solves all the overheating issues.
Far as I know, there won't be much difference between low and high cool. The compressor is either on or off. I believe high cool is just more fan. Awesome that works tho. That's a ton of cool air for only a gallon of gas!
Yeah it's not even a 5 watt difference on my Tri-Metric so it is just an increase in fan speed.
HOBO Dude, your AC Link above wont work. I bought the ALP 1000 gen you reviewed a few days ago (fast shipping, it got delivered in 2 days) but need an AC unit for it. You have an Amazon link?
I have a gererator with rated ouput of 2800 watt. Can i run a 1 ton non inverter AC?
Does it really give you 13 hrs of run time I'm planning on moving there this summer
Great test procedure and explanations!
Any solar generators that can run this AC?
Where do get an ac without all the digital stuff
How long will a gallon of gas last on regular mode? I'm guessing economy mode is what you listed 13 hours
I'm watching these videos because gas is $5 a gallon and my dad's in his truck all day and needs AC with it being 90° and in the truck that's like 140 plus the heat of the transmission and engine that heat doesn't go away for hours so you either have to run the truck or get out of it. And even then if you get out of the truck it takes 15 to 20 minutes for the truck to cool back down. He's old and doesn't need the stress of going hot to cold hot to cold
Would a 800w generator run a fridge or small deep freezer?
What is the song in the outro? Really digging it.
Mine
Love my Sportsmen 1000 Bought 2 additional for gifts ........... Paid $169ea but now they are back up to $199
I can’t find one for under $260 now
Managed to get a similar model brand new for $100
Lauriemine no way where?
Ok, so if your 800 watt generator can run your A/C Unit, then I should not have many, if any issues with my 1200 watt generator running a Window Unit A/C, if I decide to install one in my Camper Van should I ?
Was your previous ac unit a 5000 watt Haier by any chance? I returned one because it only blew 60° air from the vents. I was hoping for something under 50°.....Good video btw. I enjoyed it
No, I forget what it was. I just checked mine with a laser reader and it's blowing 43 at the vent.
HOBOTECH Wow, 43° is great! That's what I'm looking for. Thanks for the reply!
Nice music
I am wondering if that A/C unit and generator will work in the extreme desert heat? I know efficiency will be less for obvious reasons but it seems it should still work.
Actually, the lower the humidity the better the a/c works because it doesn't have to waste energy dehumidifying the air as much. I'm currently in 13% humidity 93 degrees and the unit is keeping it 74 inside. If I was in Florida it would probably be about 80 instead.
Good to know, thanks!!
Hi, I have been struggling to get my Air conditioner out (2001 Roadtrek 190 Versatile). There are screws I can't reach that seem to be under the wood in the side compartments. Do you have a link to your other air conditioner removal video?
Never mind I did it. Mine hand both Metal and LOADS of silicon sealing it to the metal in the back and front. The wood side panels where screwed in which made it harder to squeeze through.
I miss these old video layouts I get product reviews are your thing now but I miss the real life hobo camping
Hey Tom, I have 2 quick questions. Is the AC unit true to size as advertised(12"H/16"W/15"D)? Also, what are the dimensions of your bathroom(inside width and depth at the floor)? I'm going to look at an E250 van this weekend and if I pick it up I'll be copying some of the Roadtrek layout. I just don't know if there will be enough room for the bathroom in the same location.
I think the a/c was true to size. My measuring tape is locked away so your best bet to get Roadtrek dimensions is to go to their website and download a brochure. They have floor plan layouts in there. I can tell you mine is really small and if I was a bigger guy I'd have issues sitting on the pot.
What generator is this ?
I was looking to for the Sportsman 800 watt Generator on your Amazon Page. I did not find it. Did you change over to a bigger one? how did the Sportsman stand up over time running that AC unit ? Any info. would be great. Thank you.
Video is 2 years old. Of course I have a new generator. Check my Solar & Power playlist.
